Answer:	It is a plastic snap that holds the contents inside. I'm a graduate student. It works perfectly for me. I've never had the contents spill out. I've also stepped on it a few times and it has never broken. I would venture to say yes, it is fine for outdoor work, but since I'm stuck inside behind a computer and a book for 12-14 hours a day, I can't give you a definitive answer. Sorry. It's never failed me though.

The shortest width inside which happens at the hinges of the Officemate is 8 7/8 in and the inside length is 12 3/4 in. My Nexus 10 is 10 3/8 in x 6 7/8 in which gives ample space for it and its carrying case. Hope this helps.
