Answer:	Not sure what you are imagining. A spring rod might work, and I think it would work to drill holes and fasten that way , but the handle is made of plastic( thick & heavy) so it depends on your skill set and imagination.

Answer:	From the bottom shelf to the middle is 10". From the middle to the top is 11". There is a 1.5" rail around each shelf. The measurements I provided are clearance inside the rails. My husband assembled this, but I believe you could reverse the distances by using the shorter pipes on top, which appears to me to be how it is pictured ( like I said, my husband assembled this, and he put the shorter pipes on bottom--not sure why)
