Answer:	it should not require any strength to raise or lower it. you can adjust the degree of cable tension it uses to hold the platform in place by turning the bolt in the top of the column. this could be a two person job, if you already have back issues. Also, if you didn't get the weighted base that allows it to be placed anywhere instead of clamped down to a surface, I recommend contacting HumanScale to order that part.

Answer:	3/4" thick. The top comes in two pcs. 1 pc is 55"x 11 1/2" and the other is 55" x 15 3/4" and both are connected and held by 8 small dowels in between both pcs. Once both pcs are connected the entire wooden top is held by 3 screws/bolts on the bottom onto a bracket on each side of desk along the 55", making it 6 screws all together.
