VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that enables voice and multimedia communication over the internet. It has revolutionized the way people make phone calls and communicate in both personal and business settings. Here's what you need to know about VoIP:
Basic Operation: VoIP converts voice and multimedia data into digital packets and transmits them over the internet or private IP networks. This digital transmission allows for efficient data compression and optimization.
Cost Savings: VoIP is often more cost-effective than traditional phone services, especially for long-distance or international calls. It eliminates the need for dedicated phone lines and can significantly reduce phone bills.
Flexibility: VoIP is highly flexible and adaptable. Users can make calls from various devices, including computers, smartphones, IP phones, and even traditional landline phones with the use of adapters.
Features: VoIP systems come with a wide range of features, including call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, conferencing, and more. Many of these features are included at no extra cost.
Quality: The quality of VoIP calls can vary depending on internet connection and network congestion. However, advances in technology have improved call quality, making it comparable to or even better than traditional landline calls.
Business Use: VoIP is commonly used in business environments for its cost savings and features. Business VoIP systems often include advanced call management tools and integration with other software like CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems.
Security: VoIP systems can be vulnerable to security threats like eavesdropping, hacking, and denial of service attacks. It's important to implement security measures like encryption and firewalls to protect VoIP communications.
Hardware and Accessories: VoIP systems may require specific hardware like IP phones, adapters, and routers. There are also various accessories available, such as headsets and conference phones, to enhance the user experience.
Providers: Numerous VoIP service providers offer different plans and features.Popular VoIP providers include Skype, Zoom, Vonage, RingCentral, and many others. Each provider may cater to specific user needs, such as residential or business use.
Regulations: VoIP is subject to regulations that vary by country. These regulations may affect issues like emergency calling (E911), number portability, and taxation.
Future Trends: VoIP continues to evolve, with ongoing improvements in call quality, integration with other communication tools like video conferencing, and the adoption of emerging technologies like 5G for mobile VoIP.
In summary, VoIP is a technology that allows voice and multimedia communication over the internet, offering cost savings, flexibility, and a wide range of features. It has become an integral part of both personal and business communication systems, and its future holds the promise of even more advancements.

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to set up 3 or 4 lines for outgoing calls. I'm a little confused about how the OBi200 can run four services, with only one jack |
Answer: | If you want to use more than 1 outgoing line at the same time, then this device does not have enough jacks for you. It gets even more confusing as VOIP services typically allow more than 1 call at a time. The OBi202 has 2 jacks and allows you use both jacks at the same time on 1 google voice account(number). If you wish to have multiple(more than 2) outgoing calls on different VOIP services(google voice is max of 2 calls per number/account) then you need the OBi504vs(4 jacks) or OBi508vs(8 jacks). Each jack is only wired for 1 wire pair so you need to combine them if you wish to plug into a multiline analog phone or phone system. I have seen OBi508's used with 4 line DECT cordless phone systems and the extra jacks used for fax and other things. The thing you have to understand is that with SIP(VOIP) it is no longer needed to have multiple phone lines for multiple simultaneous calls. Most paid SIP providers give you 8 or more channels(simultaneous calls) and can give you more for an additional fee. It's called trunking and it's how big companies used to handle phone lines. It's SIP trunking when it's done with a SIP service. You can even use this Obi device to connect SIP phones to google voice(as GV does not allow anybody but Poly(owns Obi) from directly connecting to the google voice service. If you really want some fun, you can run a full IP phone system on a Raspberry Pi for free and have all the functions of a commercial phone system. You can even use smartphones with a SIP app as extensions. Lots of things are possible for low cost these days. I would not recommend people buy anything but SIP deskphones or cordless unless they don't have internet service. Analog phones are getting harder to support every year as they retire the copper wire phone lines. Brandon is right and you can also just buy some SIP phones and as long as they can handle 4 or more SIP accounts you can have at least 4 different lines(phone numbers) for outgoing calls. Inward calls are even easier as you can have almost unlimited number of phone numbers all ring into one account and as long as it has enough channels, you can take/make calls until you run out of phones or let it go to voicemail/auto-attendant. |
Question: | So, i'm confused, you can't just use google voice for free with this, you have to pay for a voip service, too |
Answer: | I call my wife daily in Germany. From my home phone (Google Voice), I'm charged $.01 per minute, and I'm told this every time I call. If I call her cell phone I'm charged $.03 per minute. I don't know anybody who would complain about $1.80 an hour to call an overseas cell phone. |
Question: | The manufacturer does not make mention of 911 service. Is 911 service included? If so, how does it work? Do you register your home address |
Answer: | 911 is not included and they use a service called e911 to link a phone number to an address. You don't actually have to subscribe to e911. You need to enable it if you wish the 911 operator to know your location when you call. You are technically OK if one of your phones has it so if you have a landline or a voip provider that has it, you don't need to set it up on every account but you should not enable it on accounts that do not actually have it. You do have to check a box in the obi setup if you do wish to use the 911 services and select which service provides it for you. Since google does not provide it, you can use a 3rd party of your choice. The Obi setup will prompt you about it and you have to acknowledge that you have been notified. You don't have to subscribe to the any Obi services or any other but many include e911 and have very low per minute rates so you can get your phone service from a provider that also gives e911 as you would have to pay at least 1.00/month for e911 alone. I got rid of my landlines and now I see my monthly phone bill below 5.00 with 2 phone numers on paid VOIP providers and 1 free google voice line that's just for a fax machine. Welcome to the 21st century. |
Question: | I want to transfer 2 different phone lines, and I want to keep my original phone numbers. Also, does my compter have to be 'on' for phones to work |
Answer: | If the 2 phone lines are cell phone numbers, switching it over to Google Voice is very easy. Go to Google Voice settings (upper right hand corner with the cog wheel symbol) and add the phone number. If you are trying to change your landline number over because you want to keep the same number, it's a two step process. but you will have to port your number over to a mobile service such as T-mobile first and then port it to Google Voice (GV) since GV only accepts mobile numbers. You can get instructions on how to do this on the obihai.com website under "tutorials and tips" and then "port your number to google voice". You can do this for about $10 by buying a SIM card to temporarily hold your ported landline number. It's not too painful and totally worth it! Good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Version - What color should my router light show when the Magicjack home is connected |
Answer: | It depends on the speed of your router. Generally by convention, if you have a giga speed router and the connection is one gigabit per second, the light will be green. 100 Mb speed will be Amber |
Question: | What's the difference between mj go (2017) and mj home |
Answer: | I think it is only software upgrades but not absolutely sure. It works great and is a wonderful device. It saves with about $250 a year and actually works better than my cable provider. Like getting a $250 bonus check yearly. I can’t see how you can go wrong. I like how the message system works too. I get an email and with one click even on my iPhone I can listen to the message anywhere I am. I think mine came with 1 year service included. I purchased 3 years service for about $89 as I remember which works out to less than $2.50 a month. |
Question: | can this be connected directly to my router eliminating my computer from being on |
Answer: | Yes, in fact that is how it was designed to function. The router plugs into one jack and a phone plugs into the other jack and then the unit is plugged into a power source. It will also work through your computer if you wish and if you get the app, it will work through your cell phone. It literally makes your cell phone operate with two separate numbers. |
Question: | What’s the fee after the first 12 months |
Answer: | $35.00 a year. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this phone work with comcast |
Answer: | I believe Comcast has several different Voice offerings. In most residential accounts, the Comcast voice accounts that are typically bundled with TV/ Internet service often have the voip or sip side of the voice account built into their modem/ routers. In these cases, they have a single, or dual analog out ports that you would then plug a normal home phone, or cordless base station, into. In these cases, no, the mentioned phone will not work Comcast does offer a full fledged voice service, often with several lines and multiple phone workstations. Part of this service often has the phones bundled in as part of a package. In cases such as this, this phone could work. You would need to know what the settings are (including password) to be able to use this phone as it needs an initial configuration. Hopefully this helps, Sean |
Question: | will this phone work with grasshopper |
Answer: | I am not sure, but I would call Grasshopper Support at 800-820-8210 (Toll free). |
Question: | Will phone work with magicjack |
Answer: | No because magic jack does not provide login credentials. If they did it would work fine. Unless magic jack also looks at the device I'd. They could block the device ID. Then no. Buy most likely not |
Question: | Will this work with google voice accounts |
Answer: | I have a work around, but it would require you to purchase a DID. I purchased a DID from voip.ms, and used that as my new home number. Then I created a sub account and did some forwarding. I changed my google voice not to pass though the caller ID and enabled screening. I made a forwarding rule that when google voice calls my DID, it will ring on my sub account and I setup a separate VM box and when I use the sub account, the caller ID shows my GV line. This works great for me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i have a wall set plugged into a jack and three other units plugged into regular wall electrical outlets. what is necessary to keep all these phones |
Answer: | It depends on whether you are using DSL for your internet. Most homes are wired for two lines. If you have DSL, it has to be put on a different line so that it does not damage your Telo. If you don't have DSL, then you can just disconnect the phone company's central office line in your junction box, and then plug the Telo into one of your phone jacks in order to provide a connection with all of the phones in the house. Again, don't plug the Telo into the phone jack until the outside line has been separated. If your wall telephone transmits the phone line over your electrical wiring to the other phones or wirelessly, then you just need to plug the wall phone into the Telo. You then won't need to worry about connecting other phone jacks to the Telo. But, you will need to have the internet connection nearby. Otherwise, you can buy a wireless adapter for WI-FI. You can purchase the Telo directly from Ooma, for $99.99, using this discount oode: http://www3.ooma.com/refer-a-friend/?referral_code=NUC4728&utm_campaign=refer_Sep2015&utm_medium=email&utm_source=referral_email&utm_content=coupon |
Question: | I run a Bed & Breakfast & do not want guests to be able to make toll calls- 900's, International, collect etc. Can toll calls be blocked |
Answer: | I have the Telo, and if you don't subscribe to an international plan and don't fund your prepaid calling account then it is not possible to make international or 411 calls. Thankfully, Ooma does not support 900 numbers or phone chat services. Therefore, it is good for someone who wants to keep a tight control over their residential phone bill. Ooma also has an Ooma Office product for small businesses. The Telo is designed for residential use. |
Question: | Can I keep my current phone number |
Answer: | Yes. You will need to "port" your current phone number over to your Ooma account. Ooma will take care of all the necessary paperwork after you fill out the details after purchasing the equipment. This is all done online. The porting cost is $39.00+tax and takes no more than 3 weeks. Do Not cancel your current land line and number until the port is completed. Ooma will give you a number to use during this process. I'm very pleased with the service thus far. |
Question: | What is new in this new version compared to older version of Ooma adapter listed at 109.99 on Amazon |
Answer: | What is new in this new version compared to older version of Ooma adapter listed at 109.99 on Amazon? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this phone have a stand? I see one reviewer commented: "device will not set flat on table top |
Answer: | The stand does not make it sit flat. I'm having that issue right now where the plugs push up the front of the phone. Very poorly designed. |
Question: | How many people can I call and merge together for a conference call with this phone |
Answer: | You can have up to 3 conference calls with this phone. If you are using it with IP pbx like a Grandstream ucm6202 you can have up to 25 user on a conference bridge. |
Question: | What is the warranty on this product |
Answer: | All Grandstream products come with a 1 year manufacturer warranty. |
Question: | Does this item include a power cable for networks that don't support PoE |
Answer: | Yes - the 1625 comes with a small wall wart that has a good amount of cable to connect it to the phone from a wall outlet or power strip under a normal desk. I bought the 1625 and a 1628 specifically because of the come with power adapters. My LAN is configured in a manner that made PoE impractical. Wish I could have powered the phones It would have required multiple PoE switches or power supplies and wasn't worth the cost. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This actually will forward home calls to your cell phone |
Answer: | Yes. It will forward them in real time. Both your home phone and your cell phone will ring at the same time. I hope this helps you out. |
Question: | Do I need a special handset or will my current phones work okay |
Answer: | I have a vTech base speakerphone with a wireless remote handset. Both work just fine on the Ooma. You can also set the Ooma app on your cell phone to ring if you're away from the basel |
Question: | Can the voicemail be disabled in ooma so I can use the voicemail from my phone base instead |
Answer: | The ooma voicemail is adjustable, for example, if your base phone answering machine is set to answer in 4 rings, you can set the ooma to answer after 6 rings, so the only time the ooma would pick up is if you were already talking on the phone. I don't believe you can disable it completely. |
Question: | What is the difference between "air" and no air |
Answer: | Air has built in WiFi and no air needs a dongle to connect to WiFi if you do not use an Ethernet cable to hard wire |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the OBi202 and the OBi200 models |
Answer: | There are 2 differences.. The 200 model has one line capabilities, with one phone plug. The 202 has multi line capabilities, with 2 plugs. 2 lines, means, if you say, use google voice, and sign up for another service, you can literally have 2 lines that you can talk on at the same time.. The 200 model only has one network cable port, where the 202 has 2 network cable ports.... Since there is 2 on the 202, they also include router features on the 202. This feature is good if say, you have no router at the house, a cable modem, and one computer too.. You can connect the 202 like this.. Modem, 202, computer.. Where with the 200 you will need modem, router, then to each, the computer and 200. One word of warning.. The 202 does not support full 100Mb speeds through it, using the router.. It says it has a 100Mb port, but, I found that at about 37Mb, the 202 worked good as a router, but when I upgraded to a 60Mb connection, my speeds going through it slowed down dramatically, as the 202 crashed my connection. I guess the 202 is only good up to about 40Mb connections going through it, on the router use part.. Anything more then that, get a router.. |
Question: | Does faxing work with Google voice? Can I configure it to receive fax by e-mail? Can I send a fax from PC using this? Receive fax into memory |
Answer: | Yes. I have an OBi200 and was able to send a fax via the faxmodem on my PC with no issues. It works just like a landline. |
Question: | If I have two separate google voice accounts (one for me, one for the wife), can both google voice accounts work on this device at the same time |
Answer: | I asked Obitalk's support desk for help -- so I can answer you correctly. You can configure a 2nd GV account on your OBI. (Sign in for a new Google voice #, if you don't already have one, and configure that to your OBI SP1 slot (do it from obitalk.com). Bottom line -- you can. Bit of advice, if you buy this product and need help, be patient because it'll take them 24 hours to get back to you. |
Question: | What is the status of Google voice with this device |
Answer: | Feb 2019, still works with google voice and free... for 10 years now! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a combination of ooma (for home use) and ringcentral/skype (for home office |
Answer: | Hello, you can set these up for Google Voice, thru a proxy service from a third party service it works great, and its one time fee of $5.99 and the have another line for a VOIP service like VOIP.ms it also a great service and one of the best price wise and service and quality..any other questions let me know.. Frank |
Question: | Can this phone handle a second line without purchasing additional hardware |
Answer: | No additional hardware is required to connect a second line via a SIP Trunk provider. You simply need to enter the credentials and connection information for your second SIP Trunk. |
Question: | I ordered 6 of these phones. None came with a power supply. Why are power supplies missing |
Answer: | Since the SPA 303 sets are not Power Over Ethernet (802.3af) compliant they should include a 5vDC power supply. I would recommend contacting the seller that you purchased these from and requesting the power supplies. |
Question: | Are these phones unlocked and will they work with Ring Central? Any thing else additional I need to buy with these phones? Thanks |
Answer: | I don't know if Ring Central will work but regarding what else is needed...power cord, enternet cord, and a headset if you wwant hands free. The least expensive headset I found that works (and I run a call center) is one we got from Staples: GE Model 98974 at a cost of around 20.00. You plug it in on the right side. Also, you should plug your ethernet to your computer into the bottom of the phone where it says PC and the SW is for your Provider's wall connection. |
