I bought a UPS battery backup formy cable modem and PC so they stay powered on for up to 60 min on a power outage. Assuming the cable provider still has electricity and their servers and internet don't go down, you should still have phone service. Even cellular companies can lose electricity causing an phone outage. Historically Old fashioned landline has been the most reliable in power outages.

Answer:	There seems to be a major short-coming in that i have loaded my cell phone directory into the unit, but it only uses its "home" directory for call blocking. The only way to enter numbers into the home directory is manually. I have 500 numbers in my cell directory; impossible to enter manually. So all calls get screened... Great idea, poor implementation - And it comes turned-on, causing all calls to go to screening. Useless for me!

That said, I am not sure any phone you buy today has anywhere near the clarity that old fashioned land lines used to have some decades ago. We only have the cordless handsets for this phone-- we don't have the version of this phone that includes a land line on the base, so I cannot speak to that part of the system. The handsets use HHR-4DPA rechargeable batteries. I am not sure how to answer with respect to their life-- we always keep each handset in its charger, and each charger, including the base station, is always plugged in, so each handset always recharges after use. We have only had this system for a month or two, so whether the batteries eventually die through long term use I haven't encountered yet.
