12 best scanning film negatives

Scanning film negatives is a process that involves converting analog photographic negatives into digital images. This process is commonly used to preserve old photographs, make digital copies of film negatives for easy storage and sharing, or to restore and enhance the quality of old negatives. Here's some information about scanning film negatives:

  1. Scanner Types: There are specialized film negative scanners designed specifically for scanning film negatives and slides. These scanners typically have a high-resolution capability to capture fine details from the negatives.

  2. Flatbed Scanners: Some flatbed scanners come with transparency adapters or attachments that allow you to scan film negatives and slides. These are more versatile but may not offer the same level of quality as dedicated film scanners.

  3. Resolution: Film negatives can have a very high level of detail, so it's important to use a scanner with a high optical resolution to capture all the details present in the negative.

  4. Color Depth: Scanners should have a high color depth (often measured in bits per channel) to accurately reproduce the colors and tones in the negative.

  5. Software: Scanning software is essential for adjusting settings such as contrast, brightness, color balance, and dust removal. Some scanners come with bundled software for this purpose.

  6. Dust and Scratch Removal: Many film scanners come with built-in dust and scratch removal features to enhance the quality of scanned images. This is particularly important for older negatives that may have accumulated dust and scratches.

  7. File Format: You can usually save scanned film negatives in various file formats, such as TIFF or JPEG. TIFF is a lossless format that preserves the highest quality, while JPEG is more compressed and suitable for sharing online.

  8. Resolution and File Size: Scanning at a high resolution will result in larger file sizes. Consider your storage capacity and intended use when choosing the scanning resolution.

  9. Color Correction: Some negatives may have color shifts or fading over time. Scanning software often includes color correction tools to restore the original colors.

  10. Storage and Organization: After scanning, it's important to organize and store the digital images properly. Creating a naming convention and folder structure can help keep your digitized negatives organized.

  11. Archival Quality: If you're scanning film negatives for archival purposes, ensure that you save the digital files in a format and on a medium that will last for a long time, and consider multiple backups.

  12. Quality Control: Scanning film negatives can be a time-consuming process. It's a good practice to periodically check the quality of your scans to ensure they meet your standards.

Scanning film negatives can be a rewarding way to preserve and share memories captured on film. Using the right equipment and software, you can achieve high-quality digital reproductions of your negatives.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this for my aps film negatives
Answer: I had no problem with the resolution of either 35mm color or B&W negs. 35mm slides are no problem either, as long as you remove them from the slide holders (plastic or cardboard usually). the only problem I had was that the unit only lasted two months before it fried, and when it quit it also took out a high dollar flash drive chip ($70.00) that I'll have to replace.
Question: Do these hold 35 mm negatives flat or slightly arched
Answer: When you convert a negative, either black and white or color, it get digitally saved as a positive. A color negative converts to a beautiful perfect color photograph and a Black a white negative gives you a nice black and white photograph and you can print them perfectly without need to develop further.

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine
Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.

User questions & answers

Question: When i line this up at the top edge of a v600, it says that something is blocking the scanner and it will not scan. How do i line up the film
Answer: I have a Plustek 8100 which is the successor to the Plustek 7400 I gather from googling the 7400. It looks like it is physically/geometrically identical to the 8100 so it should work. I can say with certainty that it works very well with the 8100. I read the other comments where someone was talking about it cropping the image. Orientation is relevant. I do not think there is much/any cropping if you orient the negative correctly.
Question: Will this work with a epson 1600pro scanner
Answer: 2XL is 32" Top of collar to bottom hem.
Question: will this work with HP scanjet G
Answer: Yes they are fine in warm weather. I have 2 of these and 3 of the long sleeve shirts. All are great shirts Wayne
Question: Do you have a negative scanner that works on 110 film for a HP scanner
Answer: Yes. It is large size.

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.

I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.
