9 best scanning 120 negatives
Scanning 120 negatives refers to the process of digitizing medium format film negatives that are 120mm wide. These negatives are larger than standard 35mm film, and they are often used by photographers and enthusiasts for their high-quality image capture. Here's what you should know about scanning 120 negatives:
Film Type: 120 film is a popular choice for medium format photography. It comes in various formats, including 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, and others. Each format produces different-sized negatives, so it's essential to have a scanner that can accommodate the specific format you are working with.
Scanner Compatibility: To scan 120 negatives, you'll need a scanner that is capable of handling medium format film. Not all standard flatbed scanners are equipped for this task. You may require a dedicated film scanner or a flatbed scanner with a film scanning attachment.
Resolution: When scanning 120 negatives, it's essential to choose an appropriate scanning resolution. Higher resolutions, such as 2400 DPI or more, are often preferred to capture the fine details present in medium format negatives.
Scanning Software: Scanners typically come with scanning software that allows you to control the scanning process. This software lets you adjust settings like resolution, color correction, dust removal, and more.
Color Correction: Medium format negatives may require color correction during the scanning process. Scanning software often includes features to adjust colors, exposure, and contrast to produce the most accurate and pleasing digital representations of the original negatives.
Dust and Scratch Removal: Dust and scratches can be significant issues when scanning negatives. Many scanning software applications offer tools to automatically or manually remove these imperfections.
File Format: Decide on the file format you want to save your scanned images in. Common choices include JPEG and TIFF. TIFF files are preferred for their lossless quality, but they can be larger in size.
File Organization: Develop a system for organizing your scanned negatives. You may want to create folders or use image metadata to keep track of important details like the date, location, and subject of each negative.
Archiving: After scanning, it's essential to back up your digital images properly. Consider using external hard drives, cloud storage, or archival-quality optical media to ensure the long-term preservation of your scanned negatives.
Editing: Once your negatives are scanned, you can use photo editing software to further enhance and retouch the images, if needed. This can include adjustments to exposure, color balance, and more.
Scanning 120 negatives can be a rewarding way to preserve and digitize medium format film photography. With the right equipment and techniques, you can create high-quality digital versions of your original negatives for editing, sharing, and archiving.

User questions & answers
Question: | How wide of negatives can this support? I have a 6x18 panoramic camera. Would such a large negative fit |
Answer: | This chair cannot be adjusted to support lumbar. It is very comfortable but if you require more lumbar support, we just bought a back support that ties onto the chair and it works great. I highly recommend the chair. |
Question: | will this work with 120 medium format film |
Answer: | It is adjustable to a height that would be comfortable for most young adults and adults. |
Question: | Will this work with an Epson V |
Answer: | There is no specification given for the seat thickness itself. This is a new for 2019 chair that was just released in the Big and Tall line from Lorell. Considering it is from that particular line, and our experience with other similar seating options, I would guess it to be a minimum of 4” thick with the chair having a capacity of 350 lb. Is this an 8 hour per day chair for the next 5 years, probably not. The SOHO line is lighter use small home office line with a 3 year warranty versus the regular 5 year warranty on the regular Lorell line. Great chair, just will depend on your particular needs. |
Question: | what are the overall dimensions of the holder--not the negative area or the package dimensions, but the outside dimensions of the actual carrier |
Answer: | I’m 5’ 3” and cannot rest my head on the back I can sit crossed legged in the chair |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this for my aps film negatives |
Answer: | I had no problem with the resolution of either 35mm color or B&W negs. 35mm slides are no problem either, as long as you remove them from the slide holders (plastic or cardboard usually). the only problem I had was that the unit only lasted two months before it fried, and when it quit it also took out a high dollar flash drive chip ($70.00) that I'll have to replace. |
Question: | Do these hold 35 mm negatives flat or slightly arched |
Answer: | When you convert a negative, either black and white or color, it get digitally saved as a positive. A color negative converts to a beautiful perfect color photograph and a Black a white negative gives you a nice black and white photograph and you can print them perfectly without need to develop further. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well does this scanner work with APS negatives |
Answer: | It takes standard 35mm slides or film strips only. Most of mine are from the 50s and 60s. What size film were you using? |
Question: | Is this scanner compatible with Mac |
Answer: | I have software and a Quickstart Guide - also safety instructions - The only address I have is: World Headquarters - 200 Scenic View rive - Cumberland, RI 02864 or website www.ionaudio.com |
Question: | Can you push the slides through or do you have to reload the tray |
Answer: | I would do one slide at a time. |
Question: | Wht is the scanner resolution in dpi |
Answer: | Yes it works with mounted slides. Aren't all slides mounted? However the slider mechanism jams regularly and has to be pulled out of the ION and you have to fiddle with it to get the slides to go through. |

Product description
This is a 126 film format negative holder for use with the Epson Perfection V550/V600 flatbed film scanners (US Patent Pending). This was CAD designed and manufactured for use with the obsolete 126 film format introduced by Kodak in 1963. Used commonly in Kodak "Instamatic" cameras, production of 126 film ended in 2008. 126 film was actually 35 mm in width so technically an Epson 35 mm OEM holder will work with them. The issue is that the image 126 cameras recorded was square and was also offset on the negative by 5 mm in height. Thus trying to scan a 126 negative in a 35 mm holder will result in cropping of the original image.
Specifications for the 126 negative holder:
Overall: 199 mm x 55 mm
Material: Solid Plastic
Features: Unlike some designs, this holder features a recessed channel to hold your negative strip firmly which can help avoid scratches or trapped dust that other holders may cause.
This holder is designed to fit inside the stock 120 film holder that shipped with your Canon or Epson scanner. Use of an OEM holder may not be necessary with your scanner, but it aids in proper positioning and helps avoid blocking calibrations slots on the scanner bed.
If you purchase multiple holders from us, we will adjust shipping charges after sale so that your shipping costs are combined.
NOTE: Photos show top and bottom halves of holder. Only one holder is provided.
- Compatible with Epson Perfection V550 and V600 scanners
- Unique Recessed Film Channel
- Reduces scratches
- Made in USA
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this holder work with the Epson V |
Answer: | I don't own a Epson V800, but from what I see on Amazon the V800 is one of the best and most expensive scanners on the market today, it looks like the scanner comes with film holders similar to the V550 and there should be no reason that the 126 negative holder would not fit. Why not ask the seller if they will fit, there seem to be only one seller of these after market film holders out there, when I contacted him he answered may questions very quickly and also offered a discount when I ordered the 110, 120, and 126 film holders at the same time. I hope this Information you find helpful. |
Question: | Would this holder fit a Plustek Opticfilm 8200i, please |
Answer: | No. There is one listed for the Plustek. |
Question: | How is the 126 film holder different from the 35mm film holder |
Answer: | 126 film measures 28mm X 28mm, 35mm film measures 36mm X 24mm, 126 film holder is designed to hold 126 film and the 35mm holder is designed to hold 35mm film. |
Question: | When you scan a 126 negative strip with an epson perf. v600 photo scanner, how do you solve the problem of the images being chopped in the middle |
Answer: | You have to scan in professional mode with thumbnails turned off. Please contact me via Amazon message if you have somehow lost the directions. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When i line this up at the top edge of a v600, it says that something is blocking the scanner and it will not scan. How do i line up the film |
Answer: | I have a Plustek 8100 which is the successor to the Plustek 7400 I gather from googling the 7400. It looks like it is physically/geometrically identical to the 8100 so it should work. I can say with certainty that it works very well with the 8100. I read the other comments where someone was talking about it cropping the image. Orientation is relevant. I do not think there is much/any cropping if you orient the negative correctly. |
Question: | Will this work with a epson 1600pro scanner |
Answer: | 2XL is 32" Top of collar to bottom hem. |
Question: | will this work with HP scanjet G |
Answer: | Yes they are fine in warm weather. I have 2 of these and 3 of the long sleeve shirts. All are great shirts Wayne |
Question: | Do you have a negative scanner that works on 110 film for a HP scanner |
Answer: | Yes. It is large size. |
