12 best photo digital scanners
Photo digital scanners are electronic devices designed to convert physical photographs, slides, negatives, and other printed or film-based images into digital format. They are widely used for archiving, sharing, and editing photos, as well as for restoring and preserving old or deteriorating images. Here's what you should know about photo digital scanners and their related aspects:
Types of Scanners:
- Flatbed Scanners: These scanners have a flat, glass scanning surface where you can place photos or documents. They are versatile and can handle various sizes of photos and documents.
- Slide and Negative Scanners: Specifically designed for converting 35mm slides and film negatives into digital images, these scanners often have dedicated holders or trays to accommodate different film formats.
- Sheet-fed Scanners: These scanners are designed for scanning multiple photos or documents at once, making them suitable for high-volume scanning tasks.
Resolution: Scanner resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI) and determines the level of detail captured in scanned images. Higher DPI settings result in sharper and more detailed digital images.
Color Depth: Color depth, often referred to as bit-depth, indicates how many colors a scanner can capture. Higher color depth values result in more accurate color reproduction. Common color depths are 24-bit and 48-bit.
Scanner Accessories: Some scanners come with accessories such as film holders, dust removal technology, and color correction features to enhance the scanning process and image quality.
Connectivity: Photo scanners can connect to computers via USB, Wi-Fi, or other methods. Wi-Fi connectivity can provide added convenience for wireless scanning and direct transfer to devices.
Scanning Speed: Scanning speed varies among scanners. Faster scanners are beneficial for high-volume scanning tasks, while slower scanners may be more suitable for occasional use.
Automatic Document Feeders (ADFs): Some sheet-fed scanners come with ADFs, allowing for automatic scanning of multiple photos or documents in succession.
Software: Scanners often come with bundled software for image editing, color correction, and organizing scanned photos. Some scanners are compatible with popular photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
File Formats: Scanners can save scanned images in various file formats, such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or PDF, allowing users to choose the format that best suits their needs.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Some scanners are equipped with OCR software, which can convert printed text on scanned documents into editable text files.
Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that the scanner you choose is compatible with your operating system (e.g., Windows, macOS) and any specific software requirements you may have.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the scanner glass and film holders are essential to ensure optimal scanning results and extend the lifespan of the device.
In summary, photo digital scanners are valuable tools for converting physical photos, slides, negatives, and documents into digital format. They come in various types, offer different resolutions and color depths, and may include additional features and accessories to improve the scanning process and image quality. When choosing a scanner, consider factors such as your scanning needs, the types of media you'll be scanning, and the level of image quality you require.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster |
Answer: | I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures. |
Question: | Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot |
Answer: | There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there. |
Question: | How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution |
Answer: | I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE. |
Question: | Will this scanner convert negatives to prints |
Answer: | It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required... |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it do 127 film |
Answer: | No, but I put my phone camera up to the screen without flash and took a picture of the image. It was clear and bright enough to send to email address and save to my computer. You have to brace yourself and be steady when shooting the image and it worked great. |
Question: | What is the maximum optical dpi for photos |
Answer: | This is only a viewer. |
Question: | Cannot get mode to work |
Answer: | I really don’t think so. Not 100% sure. Would sure be cumbersome |
Question: | Why do I get an exclamation point (!) when I try to capture a slide |
Answer: | You can download your slides on a SD card and then view and save on your computer. If there was another way to view on the computer we did not find it! However, if you are serious about saving slides to your computer or have a great many of them, I would recommend a more advanced slide viewer with better options. This device works but is laborious to some extent especially if your your slides are old or worn. |

Answer: | No, the DS-320's feed path has a curve to it, so thicker material like laminated pages would not feed properly. You would need to consider one of our desktop scanners that has a straight feed path like the DS-530 or ES-400. - The Epson Team |
Question: | Does this work with a Windows 10 pc |
Answer: | I am using it with her windows 10 machine |
Question: | Can you put multiple photos in a tray to scan one by one? Or are you putting one photo in the machine at a time |
Answer: | It's a basic scanner, if you can create folders on your computer, you can save your scanned file in that folder. It's a very nice scanner it does a good job and it's easy to use |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which button do I push to actually save the image |
Answer: | See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides). |
Question: | Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air |
Answer: | I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer. |
Question: | Does this work with 16mm reels |
Answer: | If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie. |
Question: | My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine. |
Question: | So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files |
Answer: | You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well. |
Question: | how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans |
Answer: | I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners. |
Question: | How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you |
Answer: | I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan. |
Question: | Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience |
Answer: | Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia |

User questions & answers
Question: | will it do round negative discs |
Answer: | John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally. |
Question: | I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg |
Answer: | I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable! |
Question: | Does it work with medium format film negatives |
Answer: | Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner. |
Question: | Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light |
Answer: | This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images |
Answer: | Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon. |
Question: | What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb |
Answer: | Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me. |
Question: | Does it scan black and white film |
Answer: | No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs. |
Question: | Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm |
Answer: | I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520. |

Question: | does this invert colors so that the film negative shows as a color picture or does it just enlarge the negative |
Answer: | You are right, the image will be mostly black. There is a holder for 8mm film but you would have to take the film out of the cardboard. |
Question: | Can this copy to usb |
Answer: | My instruction book says the scanner has 128MB of built memory available to store about 50 scanned images. The scanner will also accept SD, SDHC and SDXC cards with a max of 128GB. I have not found a way to tell how much memory is in the scanner. I have scanned over 1400 slides so far and it is great. The scanner has a counter that counts the number of scans but I wish there was a way to reset it. The Model FS51 has 64mB of internal memory per the specifications, Maybe the rep was looking at this one. Hope this helps. |
Question: | The description and reviews are a bit confusing, will the scanner convert b&w and color negatives to good quality photos? thanks |
Answer: | It scans all negative film, up to 35mm. |
Question: | Receives a yellow exclamation pint. What does that mean |
Answer: | It covers fully the entire film. You have to be careful how you load into scanner but it will scan all the film. |
