11 best movie film scanners
Movie film scanners, particularly those related to slide and negative scanning, are devices designed to convert analog film (such as 35mm slides or negatives) into digital images. These scanners play a crucial role in preserving and digitizing old film-based memories, making them accessible and shareable in the digital age. Here are some key aspects related to movie film scanners:
Resolution and Image Quality:
- Movie film scanners come with varying resolutions, typically measured in dots per inch (DPI). Higher resolutions result in sharper and more detailed digital images.
- Image quality is a critical factor, especially for preserving the details and colors present in the original film.
Compatibility:
- Film scanners are designed to handle different film formats, including 35mm slides, negatives, and sometimes medium or large format films.
- Some scanners may also support various film types, such as color or black-and-white films.
Color Depth:
- The color depth of a scanner refers to the number of bits used to represent each color in an image. Higher color depth allows for more accurate reproduction of colors.
- Common color depths include 24-bit (8 bits per channel) and 48-bit (16 bits per channel).
Speed and Batch Scanning:
- Scanning speed is a consideration, especially when dealing with a large number of film frames. Some scanners offer batch scanning capabilities, allowing multiple frames to be scanned simultaneously.
Dust and Scratch Removal:
- Many film scanners come with features to remove dust and scratches from the scanned images. This is essential for improving the overall quality of the digitized content.
Software and Connectivity:
- Film scanners often come bundled with scanning software that provides additional features and controls.
- Connectivity options include USB, Firewire, or other interfaces for connecting the scanner to a computer.
Resolution vs. Interpolation:
- Some scanners may use interpolation to artificially enhance the resolution of scanned images. While this can be useful, it's essential to understand the native optical resolution of the scanner for accurate results.
Dynamic Range:
- Dynamic range is the ability of a scanner to capture details in both shadow and highlight areas of an image. A higher dynamic range allows for better reproduction of the full range of tones in a film.
Price Range:
- Movie film scanners come in various price ranges, depending on their features and capabilities. Higher-end models with advanced features may be more expensive.
When choosing a movie film scanner, it's crucial to consider your specific needs, the type of film you'll be scanning, and the level of quality you require in the digitized images. Reading reviews and understanding the technical specifications of different models can help in making an informed decision based on your requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | Once downloadat 30fps to sd card, where to from there? it will probably play in a pc, but how to you get the capture to play on a tv (dvd |
Answer: | Import the file into a program like Pinnacle's Studio pro or Adobe Premiere Elements. From there you can create a DVD. Or upload directly to YouTube and you have a watchable movie that will play on your TV if your PC is linked to your TV. That last way is best as the second compression which YouTube does to the movie improves the quality of the video. |
Question: | What is power? is it 220/230v for using in eu |
Answer: | i have a US unit, it came with an external power supply that plugs into the wall socket. It outputs 12 vdc that plugs into the unit.It should have no issue if the correct wall supply is furnished for the eu unit. Unit actually runs on 12v. |
Question: | how much can a 32 GB card hold. How many small reels |
Answer: | My 3-inch reels average about 150 MB each. So a quick back-of-the-napkin calculation is 213 3-inch reels will fit on a 32 GB memory card. |
Question: | Has anyone figured out a way to use 7" reels on this unit |
Answer: | I found out that the 7" reels that surface mount electronics parts are packaged on for automated manufacturing are the same as old super 8 reels. I work at a company that has electronics manufacturing and the empties get tossed out. So, I got a bunch of them with intent to make some pulleys out of them. Idea was to put a cut down one on the wolverine take up drive, then a rubber belt (actually a girls hair band) over a another for offset and finally a "final drive" that I could put the actual 7" take up on. Had that stuff mounted on a wood stand. The supply reel just mounted on another wood stand with a bolt and wingnut. Good idea but didn't work well. The pulleys & belts took too much torque to turn and the wolverine slip clutch was not up to the task. Plan B, I had a motorized film editor with 2 variable speed drive motors on it. So, I took that apart and arranged one of the motors to drive my pulley setup instead of the wolverine. I had to babysit it but it worked and I was able to scan several full 7" reels w/o having to cut them into smaller sections. Looked real kludgy but got it done. If I were to be doing a lot more of this, I would rebuild the setup with a proper motor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It states the reslution is "1080p (1920 x 1080) - depends on source". what does "depends on source" mean? it's an anaolog source |
Answer: | 1920x1080 is possibly a typo, although I'm not sure what they mean by "depends on source." Both Super 8 and Regular 8 have an aspect ratio of 4:3, which in HD terms is 1440x1080 (1920x1080 is 16:9). Hope that helps. |
Question: | Where is made |
Answer: | Like most electronics, this is made in China. |
Question: | Is it possible to grab the raw frame sequences without converting to mp4? (I work in video editing, and would prefer to encode myself |
Answer: | No. The scanner records the movie internally at 20fps (not scanning speed), which it needs to do to eliminate flicker and encode mp4 onto an sd card. It never retains any images, unlike the Reflecta super 8+ scanner. It's a good question but again, no images available to save to re-encode into a better image than these units produce. To me, the end results with these are not good. Telecine with an old projector gives much better results and these very cheaply made scanners are toys that will not last. DRagging the film over the film gate is also a bad idea with 8mm film prints. |
Question: | So is this still working well for you |
Answer: | Kind of. I’ve done about 10 rolls of both 8mm and super 8. No matter what size reel you have, if there is a splice, it’ll hang up and you’ll have to manually pull it through, so you can completely walk away and ignore the transfer process. The 5” and 7” reels tend to stop half way through, which for those reels can be a 4 hr process. It almost seems like the machine overheats, which is funny because you dont feel any heat. I shut it off and continue later. This creates another file, but oh well, depending on what video editor/creator you plan on using, this just makes a chapter or a splice. If i wasnt so frugal and only had a few reels, id have used costco or walmarts service, but oh well, i plan on reselling this after im done. I really dont see why these are $300. Its all plastic, should be $79.95, but this was the only one that accepted 7” reels. Hope this helped |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this device allow you to determine the "zoom" of the image, in case I wished to frame wide enough to include edges and sprokets |
Answer: | It did on mine to where I could see the edge of the sprocket holes but I don't know if it will zoom out as far as you want. |
Question: | Will this unit auto rewind back onto original reel when done |
Answer: | No. You have to reverse the reels and follow the white dotted threading line. Make sure you close the platten down so you won't scratch the film. Then press the mode switch till display of functions comes up. Scroll down to fast forward and press the start switch (far right button) and the film will wind up back on it's original reel. Remember, don't thread the film back under the platten! Close it down to allow free, overhead movement of film. Good luck! MW unit will wind |
Question: | This keeps it as a movie not fram by fram pic correct |
Answer: | Yes saves it as a movie but copies frame by frame |
Question: | Is it possible to convert the sd card to dvd format |
Answer: | You can put the sd card into your computer to download the videos and create a dvd from the computer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | No sound? If you convert videos, do you lose their sound |
Answer: | 1. Transfer using scanner. 2. Transfer again using any magnetic sound projector onto white paper or transfer box. The audio must be connected with mini pin from projector to audio into camcorder. Camcorder must have audio in option. 3. Using video editing software such as Adobe sold here on Amazon, import both versions. Align both versions on timeline, delete video--not audio from sound transfer. Align audio and tweek sync if needed, by changing slightly the speed of the audio track. We use the Relecta Super 8+ scanner. Slow professional results. This unit is very cheap, flimsy and the sub-par encoding is due to the speed it needs to encode, at 20fps necessary for film transfers in 8mm. The Reflecta however, combines the 1080p images once scan is finished into movie, giving superior results. Also pay attention to the CMOS chip size. This one is something like 2.5 whereas the Reflecta CMOS is 9. That's the most important subject regarding scanners. |
Question: | Does it have manual frame-by-frame scanning to ensure perfect frame alignment over trouble spots in the film like torn sprocket holes and bad splices |
Answer: | I have 8mm film put some of the film has torn sprocket holes. Does this projector need sprocket holes or does it run on the edge of film? |
Question: | How adjustable is the compression? Some capture devices suffer from lossy compression. Also if 1536v, why is 1080p the highest resolution available |
Answer: | The compression and resolution are almost academic considering the image quality of an 8mm frame. Without compression, you'd be dealing with unwieldy file sizes. mp4 artifacts are way down on the list of things to consider here. This product is for movies shot by amateurs. I set my video editor to 1080p ProRes and then re-compress to mp4. The degradation is hardly noticeable. |
Question: | How long does it take to convert a 50ft reel |
Answer: | What is important here is that this machine is actually a 8mm/super8 SCANNER! It does not transfer the film elements in real time. And, that is the good news. It will scan one frame per second (my best estimate). So, a 50’ reel could take about 25 minutes. One thing that I needed to do it run the video file through a video editing software to get the best speed and exposure. Then you can transfer the file to a DVD or onto a MP4 . I did both. I made a dvd file to transfer as well as a MP4 file to stream via my router. Get the pro version to transfer into 1080. The image from 8mm will only have a limited sharp quality to the image. Good luck with it |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which button do I push to actually save the image |
Answer: | See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides). |
Question: | Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air |
Answer: | I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer. |
Question: | Does this work with 16mm reels |
Answer: | If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie. |
Question: | My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine. |
Question: | So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files |
Answer: | You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well. |
Question: | how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans |
Answer: | I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners. |
Question: | How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you |
Answer: | I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan. |
Question: | Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience |
Answer: | Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | will it do round negative discs |
Answer: | John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally. |
Question: | I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg |
Answer: | I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable! |
Question: | Does it work with medium format film negatives |
Answer: | Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner. |
Question: | Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light |
Answer: | This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless. |
