9 best ion slide scanners

Ion slide scanners were a line of products designed for digitizing slides and negatives, particularly for film photography enthusiasts and archivists. These devices were part of the broader category of slide negative scanners and were used to convert physical slides and film negatives into digital formats that could be easily stored, edited, and shared on modern electronic devices.

Key features and functionalities of Ion slide scanners included:

  1. Slide and Negative Compatibility: Ion slide scanners were typically capable of handling 35mm slides and film negatives, making them suitable for a wide range of photographic materials.

  2. High-Resolution Scanning: These scanners offered high-resolution scanning capabilities, allowing users to capture fine details and produce quality digital images.

  3. Color Correction and Enhancement: Many Ion slide scanners included features for automatic or manual color correction and enhancement to restore the vibrancy of old photos.

  4. Dust and Scratch Removal: Some models came with built-in dust and scratch removal technology to improve the quality of scanned images.

  5. Digital Output: Ion slide scanners connected to computers via USB or other interfaces to transfer scanned images directly to the user's digital library.

  6. Software: They often came bundled with software for organizing, editing, and sharing scanned images. This software might include features like cropping, resizing, and red-eye correction.

  7. Compatibility: Ion slide scanners were designed to work with both Windows and Mac operating systems.

  8. Easy-to-Use: These scanners were usually designed with user-friendliness in mind, with straightforward controls and intuitive software interfaces.

  9. Various Slide Capacities: Different models of Ion slide scanners might have varying capacities for how many slides or negatives could be loaded at once.

  10. Speed: Scanning speed could vary between models, with some offering faster scanning times than others.

  11. Resolution Settings: Users could often choose from various resolution settings to balance image quality and file size.

Ion slide scanners were primarily used by individuals and organizations looking to digitize their analog photographic collections. This digitization process helped preserve old photographs and slides, making them accessible in the digital age.

User questions & answers

Question: I have slides from the '50s and '60s that are 2 1/2 inch squares. Will these fit into this converter
Answer: No. Great sound, but light on bass and not nose cancelling.
Question: where can i get a manual for this product
Answer: The plug on the E4000 is 1/8" or 2.5mm. Your Sony receiver headphone jack is probably 1/4" or 6.35mm. If this is the case, you will need a 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor to connect the E4000 to your receiver.
Question: How fast can you feed the slides and what is the capacity of the feeder? Image shows a handful of slides
Answer: It comes with soft ear-hooks that allows the cable to be used over-ear if desired. There is a picture of them here: https://snext-final.com/en/products/detail/E4000
Question: Does this work with "mounted" slides
Answer: the E400 has detachable MMCX connector cables. Any cable with MMCX connectors should work. There are also Bluetooth MMCX connectors available if you choose to go that route. Example: Shure BT1 / BT2. Westone has a Bluetooth MMCX connector as well. Try searching Amazon for 'MMCX cable with microphone'.

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this scanner work with APS negatives
Answer: It takes standard 35mm slides or film strips only. Most of mine are from the 50s and 60s. What size film were you using?
Question: Is this scanner compatible with Mac
Answer: I have software and a Quickstart Guide - also safety instructions - The only address I have is: World Headquarters - 200 Scenic View rive - Cumberland, RI 02864 or website www.ionaudio.com
Question: Can you push the slides through or do you have to reload the tray
Answer: I would do one slide at a time.
Question: Wht is the scanner resolution in dpi
Answer: Yes it works with mounted slides. Aren't all slides mounted? However the slider mechanism jams regularly and has to be pulled out of the ION and you have to fiddle with it to get the slides to go through.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.

I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.

Question: Do you need to place photos one by one? Or is there a feeder for more? How long does 1scan takes
Answer: If you’re looking to scan 8mm and Super8 films into movie files, try this unit: Wolverine 8mm and Super8 Reels Movie Digitizer with 2.4" LCD, Black (Film2Digital MovieMaker) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KA32HH0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pQF2Ab8TYXTB3 It works well and is simple to operate.
Question: Does anyone know where to get extra slide, neg and pic trays
Answer: You will HAVE to have an SD Card as well as the appropriate connection to you r computer. I find this a very simple way to get my 110 126 and 35 MM slides digitized. While I am sure a professional would achieve better results I am quite happy with the results. BTW this will work with windows 10 quite well. If you have slides that are over exposed you can adjust them with the SCANZA and again with the windows software to enhance the images.

User questions & answers

Question: How long to scan a slide
Answer: I don't know, but the one that comes with this does not work very well. Had to do mine one at a time to prevent jamming. Also says you can hook to TV but that doesn't work either( tech service has no answer)
Question: Can I convert old black & white and old color photos
Answer: My slide copier came with a plastic bar that has a cleaning pad on the end of it. When the feed tray is out of the copier, this cleaning tool slides in on the top of the LED screen. slide it around to clean the screen. -------Don
Question: mac compatible
Answer: I use Windows 7, and it saves to a JPEG format. File size ~ 1MB
Question: Will it scan full rolls and/or strips of negatives? - NOT SLIDES
Answer: Yes, that is why I bought this to convert 60's & 70's slide film to computer - then you can do whatever you want with them. I though the scanned pictures looked great compared to the actual slides - but you slide pictures might be faded or pixels not that great. So understand this.
Question: Does the slide holder from older models (you can stack 25 slides in it) work on this newer model
Answer: The unit comes with three picture holders, the largest is for a 5 X 7 picture.
Question: Does anyone know how to clean the inside of the LED screen? Mine is full of dust and black spots. Slides have been in dustproof container, so why
Answer: The scan is extremely good! Once I transfer the pictures from the SD card to my memory stick, I further enhance the pictures, bringing back some of the old color and clarity. The speed of each scan is remarkable. You simply push the scan button and then the save button and in the time it took me to say this you're ready to do the next picture.
Question: what is the file format
Answer: It comes with holders for the 3 major sizes. I've scanned all different sizes. I just have to be careful trying to pull them out, sometimes they get stuck. I found that if I take another photo and stick it halfway in, in front of the other, I can slide them out easily. Just enough to keep it from catching on the way out.
Question: Will this scan reeled film from the 60's
Answer: The memory card can be plugged into a computer (MAC/PC) and easily then transfer files, including to a CD/DVD if your computer has that ability. The files are .JPG format standard images.
