10 best film scanner softwares

Film scanner software is a crucial component when digitizing slides and negatives using a film scanner. This software is responsible for controlling the scanner, capturing the image, and often includes post-processing features to enhance the scanned images. Here's what you should know about film scanner software:

  1. Compatibility: Film scanner software is designed to work with specific models and brands of film scanners. Compatibility is essential to ensure that the software can communicate effectively with the hardware.

  2. Scanning Modes: Film scanner software typically offers different scanning modes, such as color, grayscale, and black and white. Users can choose the appropriate mode based on the type of film being scanned and the desired output.

  3. Resolution and DPI: Film scanner software allows users to set the resolution (dots per inch or DPI) for the scans. Higher DPI settings result in sharper and more detailed images but may also create larger file sizes.

  4. Color Correction: Many film scanner software applications include color correction features to adjust for fading or color shifts in old slides or negatives. This helps restore the original color quality of the images.

  5. Dust and Scratch Removal: To enhance the quality of scanned images, some software includes tools for automatic dust and scratch removal. This is especially useful when dealing with older film that may have accumulated imperfections.

  6. Batch Scanning: Film scanner software often supports batch scanning, allowing users to scan multiple slides or negatives in a single session. This can save a significant amount of time when digitizing large collections.

  7. File Format Options: Users can typically choose from various file formats for the scanned images, including JPEG, TIFF, and RAW formats.TIFF and RAW formats are preferred for archival purposes due to their higher quality and lossless compression.

  8. Image Editing: Some film scanner software includes basic image editing features, such as cropping, rotation, and exposure adjustment. This allows users to make quick adjustments to scanned images without needing separate editing software.

  9. File Management: Film scanner software often includes tools for organizing and managing scanned images, such as creating folders, naming conventions, and adding metadata.

  10. Output Options: Users can specify where the scanned images should be saved, whether to a specific folder on their computer or an external storage device.

  11. User Interface: The user interface of film scanner software varies from one application to another. It should be intuitive and easy to use, as users will spend a significant amount of time working with it.

  12. Updates and Support: It's important to choose film scanner software from reputable manufacturers or developers who provide regular updates and customer support to address any issues or compatibility concerns.

Overall, film scanner software is a vital tool for individuals and professionals looking to convert their analog film slides and negatives into digital formats. The specific features and capabilities of the software may vary depending on the brand and model of the film scanner and the software package provided with it.

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this scanner work with APS negatives
Answer: It takes standard 35mm slides or film strips only. Most of mine are from the 50s and 60s. What size film were you using?
Question: Is this scanner compatible with Mac
Answer: I have software and a Quickstart Guide - also safety instructions - The only address I have is: World Headquarters - 200 Scenic View rive - Cumberland, RI 02864 or website www.ionaudio.com
Question: Can you push the slides through or do you have to reload the tray
Answer: I would do one slide at a time.
Question: Wht is the scanner resolution in dpi
Answer: Yes it works with mounted slides. Aren't all slides mounted? However the slider mechanism jams regularly and has to be pulled out of the ION and you have to fiddle with it to get the slides to go through.

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.

I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine
Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

Based on 879 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Fully Automated Digitizer to Convert Old 8mm and Super 8 Movie Reels Into Digital Videos. Support up to 9" reels and 1080P Your old reel-to-reel 8mm and Super 8 films are degrading. Worse, the memories are fading and the film is becoming more brittle just sitting in the box. Convert your Film into digital now before the memories are lost forever! Introducing the Wolverine Reels2Digital Moviemaker-Pro. A very simple to use device that will convert your movie reels into digital movies (no sound) with few strokes. Works like a typical projector where you mount up to 9 inch reel, insert a memory card, press few buttons and the apparatus will pull the film and scan frame-by-frame to create a digital MP4 movie file that you can play on any computer, you can edit, upload to the internet or burn to DVD's. The Wolverine Reels2Digital Moviemaker-Pro pays for itself taking into consideration that photo Labs are charging more than a dollar to digitize a single foot of film!

  • A fully automated apparatus to digitize 8 and Super 8 movie Reels (no sound and no split 16mm). Frame-by-Frame digitizing for high-quality digital conversion.
  • Stand-alone machine, no computer, no software or Drivers are required. Scans and directly saves digital movies into SD/SDHC cards (32GB max, not included)
  • Converts 8 and Super 8 movies into 1080P mjpeg-4 (MP4) digital video files.
  • Compatible with all windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
  • Playback direct to tv's using the included TV cable.

User questions & answers

Question: No sound? If you convert videos, do you lose their sound
Answer: 1. Transfer using scanner. 2. Transfer again using any magnetic sound projector onto white paper or transfer box. The audio must be connected with mini pin from projector to audio into camcorder. Camcorder must have audio in option. 3. Using video editing software such as Adobe sold here on Amazon, import both versions. Align both versions on timeline, delete video--not audio from sound transfer. Align audio and tweek sync if needed, by changing slightly the speed of the audio track. We use the Relecta Super 8+ scanner. Slow professional results. This unit is very cheap, flimsy and the sub-par encoding is due to the speed it needs to encode, at 20fps necessary for film transfers in 8mm. The Reflecta however, combines the 1080p images once scan is finished into movie, giving superior results. Also pay attention to the CMOS chip size. This one is something like 2.5 whereas the Reflecta CMOS is 9. That's the most important subject regarding scanners.
Question: Does it have manual frame-by-frame scanning to ensure perfect frame alignment over trouble spots in the film like torn sprocket holes and bad splices
Answer: I have 8mm film put some of the film has torn sprocket holes. Does this projector need sprocket holes or does it run on the edge of film?
Question: How adjustable is the compression? Some capture devices suffer from lossy compression. Also if 1536v, why is 1080p the highest resolution available
Answer: The compression and resolution are almost academic considering the image quality of an 8mm frame. Without compression, you'd be dealing with unwieldy file sizes. mp4 artifacts are way down on the list of things to consider here. This product is for movies shot by amateurs. I set my video editor to 1080p ProRes and then re-compress to mp4. The degradation is hardly noticeable.
Question: How long does it take to convert a 50ft reel
Answer: What is important here is that this machine is actually a 8mm/super8 SCANNER! It does not transfer the film elements in real time. And, that is the good news. It will scan one frame per second (my best estimate). So, a 50’ reel could take about 25 minutes. One thing that I needed to do it run the video file through a video editing software to get the best speed and exposure. Then you can transfer the file to a DVD or onto a MP4 . I did both. I made a dvd file to transfer as well as a MP4 file to stream via my router. Get the pro version to transfer into 1080. The image from 8mm will only have a limited sharp quality to the image. Good luck with it

User questions & answers

Question: will this scan 126 and 110 film
Answer: No. Scans 35mm film only.
Question: Dose it scan full frame or cropped
Answer: It scans full frame.
Question: Can it scan 35mm panoramas
Answer: Yes, it can scan a few types of panoramas including Horizon 24x58, Widelux 24x59, and XPan 24x65. For Panramas, it scan scan a maximum of 3 frames per strip, which is about the same as 6 frames for normal 135.
Question: Will this scan an entire roll of uncut 35mm film at one time
Answer: No it won’t. The machine does it by 6 negatives per “slide”. Once the slide is done it’ll eject the film it scanned and on to the next one. You will have to cut the roll into strips of 6 for it to work the best, but strips of 4 will work well too. However the company advertises only being able to scan a batch of 10 strips, and I was able to reliably scan about 15 with no issues.

User questions & answers

Question: It states the reslution is "1080p (1920 x 1080) - depends on source". what does "depends on source" mean? it's an anaolog source
Answer: 1920x1080 is possibly a typo, although I'm not sure what they mean by "depends on source." Both Super 8 and Regular 8 have an aspect ratio of 4:3, which in HD terms is 1440x1080 (1920x1080 is 16:9). Hope that helps.
Question: Where is made
Answer: Like most electronics, this is made in China.
Question: Is it possible to grab the raw frame sequences without converting to mp4? (I work in video editing, and would prefer to encode myself
Answer: No. The scanner records the movie internally at 20fps (not scanning speed), which it needs to do to eliminate flicker and encode mp4 onto an sd card. It never retains any images, unlike the Reflecta super 8+ scanner. It's a good question but again, no images available to save to re-encode into a better image than these units produce. To me, the end results with these are not good. Telecine with an old projector gives much better results and these very cheaply made scanners are toys that will not last. DRagging the film over the film gate is also a bad idea with 8mm film prints.
Question: So is this still working well for you
Answer: Kind of. I’ve done about 10 rolls of both 8mm and super 8. No matter what size reel you have, if there is a splice, it’ll hang up and you’ll have to manually pull it through, so you can completely walk away and ignore the transfer process. The 5” and 7” reels tend to stop half way through, which for those reels can be a 4 hr process. It almost seems like the machine overheats, which is funny because you dont feel any heat. I shut it off and continue later. This creates another file, but oh well, depending on what video editor/creator you plan on using, this just makes a chapter or a splice. If i wasnt so frugal and only had a few reels, id have used costco or walmarts service, but oh well, i plan on reselling this after im done. I really dont see why these are $300. Its all plastic, should be $79.95, but this was the only one that accepted 7” reels. Hope this helped
