8 best film negative scannings
Film negative scanning involves the process of converting film negatives, which are developed photographic film with inverted colors, into digital images. This is commonly done using specialized equipment like slide and negative scanners. Here are key aspects related to film negative scanning:
Slide Negative Scanners:
- Specialized Scanners: Slide negative scanners are designed specifically for converting film negatives and slides into digital images.
- High Resolution: These scanners often provide high-resolution scanning capabilities to capture fine details present in the film negatives.
Scanning Process:
- Light Source: Film negative scanners use a light source to illuminate the film negatives. The light passes through the film, and the resulting image is captured by a sensor or camera.
- Color Correction: During scanning, color correction algorithms are applied to convert the inverted colors of the negative into a positive image.
Resolution and DPI:
- High Resolution: To capture details accurately, film negatives are typically scanned at high resolutions, measured in dots per inch (DPI). Higher DPI values result in sharper and more detailed digital images.
Color Depth:
- Bit Depth: Film negatives may be scanned at various bit depths to capture color information. Higher bit depths allow for a more extensive range of colors and shades.
Scanner Accessories:
- Film Holders: Scanners often come with film holders that secure the negatives in place during scanning, preventing movement and ensuring a stable scanning process.
- Dust Removal: Some scanners feature dust and scratch removal technologies to enhance the quality of the scanned images by reducing the impact of imperfections on the film.
File Formats:
- Digital Output: The scanned film negatives are typically saved in common digital image file formats such as JPEG or TIFF. These formats allow for easy storage, sharing, and printing of the digitized images.
Post-Processing Software:
- Editing Tools: After scanning, users may use image editing software to further enhance or correct the digitized images. This includes adjustments to color balance, contrast, and sharpness.
Uses of Scanned Images:
- Archiving: Scanning film negatives is a common practice for archiving old photographs and preserving them in digital form.
- Printing: Digital images obtained from film negatives can be printed or shared online.
- Digital Projects: Scanned film negatives are used in various digital projects, including multimedia presentations and online galleries.
Quality Considerations:
- Dynamic Range: A good film negative scanner should have a wide dynamic range to capture details in both shadow and highlight areas.
- Color Accuracy: Maintaining color accuracy during scanning is crucial to reproduce the original colors of the photographs.
Film negative scanning is a valuable process for preserving and digitizing analog photographs, making them accessible in the digital age. High-quality scanners and careful handling of film negatives contribute to the successful conversion of film into digital images.

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m having a hard time in this product without getting the picture is cut in half any suggestions |
Answer: | I have found that the vertical posts don't line up exactly with the frames of the film. Cut the APS film down to just 4 frames rather than trying to do the full thing. Also, if you are using EPSON's software, you need to manually find the frames, don't rely on it to do it. Their software seems to have issues with anything other than what's explicitly on the provided holders. If you go into the manual tab, you can draw out each frame individually. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images |
Answer: | Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon. |
Question: | What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb |
Answer: | Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me. |
Question: | Does it scan black and white film |
Answer: | No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs. |
Question: | Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm |
Answer: | I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When i line this up at the top edge of a v600, it says that something is blocking the scanner and it will not scan. How do i line up the film |
Answer: | I have a Plustek 8100 which is the successor to the Plustek 7400 I gather from googling the 7400. It looks like it is physically/geometrically identical to the 8100 so it should work. I can say with certainty that it works very well with the 8100. I read the other comments where someone was talking about it cropping the image. Orientation is relevant. I do not think there is much/any cropping if you orient the negative correctly. |
Question: | Will this work with a epson 1600pro scanner |
Answer: | 2XL is 32" Top of collar to bottom hem. |
Question: | will this work with HP scanjet G |
Answer: | Yes they are fine in warm weather. I have 2 of these and 3 of the long sleeve shirts. All are great shirts Wayne |
Question: | Do you have a negative scanner that works on 110 film for a HP scanner |
Answer: | Yes. It is large size. |

This was custom made for use with the obsolete Kodak Disc format that was briefly popular some 30 years ago. Specifications for the Kodak Disc negative holder:
Overall: 65 mm diameter
Material: Plastic
New! Negative Solutions is the first to offer a Kodak Disc holder for this model of scanner that does not require removing the center hub!
- solid plastic
- patent pending
- CAD designed
- Made in USA
- Removing disc hub not required
User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have a video on how to use this product? I would like to see how the disc fits in and how it is rotated to the next image |
Answer: | No, there is no specific video for using the Disc holder, but rather a description of how to use the holder and how to position it for proper scanning. |
Question: | Will this work with the Epson V |
Answer: | https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YV5C267 You'll first need to do the research to make sure the 350 uses the same holders as the 300, 330, and 370. |
Question: | I have a HP 4652, do you have an adapter for that |
Answer: | No, we have nothing for that scanner. That scanner doesn't appear to be a negative scanner in any case. You have to have a specialized negative/film scanner to use our holders. |
Question: | Will this work with other scanners other than those listed |
Answer: | No. If you advise what kind of scanner you own we can tell you whether we have any holders that will work for you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this scan 126 and 110 film |
Answer: | No. Scans 35mm film only. |
Question: | Dose it scan full frame or cropped |
Answer: | It scans full frame. |
Question: | Can it scan 35mm panoramas |
Answer: | Yes, it can scan a few types of panoramas including Horizon 24x58, Widelux 24x59, and XPan 24x65. For Panramas, it scan scan a maximum of 3 frames per strip, which is about the same as 6 frames for normal 135. |
Question: | Will this scan an entire roll of uncut 35mm film at one time |
Answer: | No it won’t. The machine does it by 6 negatives per “slide”. Once the slide is done it’ll eject the film it scanned and on to the next one. You will have to cut the roll into strips of 6 for it to work the best, but strips of 4 will work well too. However the company advertises only being able to scan a batch of 10 strips, and I was able to reliably scan about 15 with no issues. |

Used commonly in Kodak "Instamatic" cameras, production of 126 film ended in 2008. 126 film was actually 35 mm in width so technically an Epson 35 mm OEM holder will work with them. The issue is that the image 126 cameras recorded was square and was also offset on the negative by 5 mm in height. Thus trying to scan a 126 negative in a 35 mm holder will result in cropping of the original image.
Specifications for the 126 negative holder:
Overall: 199 mm x 55 mm
Material: Solid Plastic
Features: Unlike some designs, this holder features a recessed channel to hold your negative strip firmly which can help avoid scratches or trapped dust that other holders may cause.
This holder is designed to fit inside the stock 120 film holder that shipped with your Canon or Epson scanner. Use of an OEM holder may not be necessary with your scanner, but it aids in proper positioning and helps avoid blocking calibrations slots on the scanner bed.
If you purchase multiple holders from us, we will adjust shipping charges after sale so that your shipping costs are combined.
NOTE: Photos show top and bottom halves of holder. Only one holder is provided.
- Compatible with Epson Perfection V550 and V600 scanners
- Unique Recessed Film Channel
- Reduces scratches
- Made in USA
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this holder work with the Epson V |
Answer: | I don't own a Epson V800, but from what I see on Amazon the V800 is one of the best and most expensive scanners on the market today, it looks like the scanner comes with film holders similar to the V550 and there should be no reason that the 126 negative holder would not fit. Why not ask the seller if they will fit, there seem to be only one seller of these after market film holders out there, when I contacted him he answered may questions very quickly and also offered a discount when I ordered the 110, 120, and 126 film holders at the same time. I hope this Information you find helpful. |
Question: | Would this holder fit a Plustek Opticfilm 8200i, please |
Answer: | No. There is one listed for the Plustek. |
Question: | How is the 126 film holder different from the 35mm film holder |
Answer: | 126 film measures 28mm X 28mm, 35mm film measures 36mm X 24mm, 126 film holder is designed to hold 126 film and the 35mm holder is designed to hold 35mm film. |
Question: | When you scan a 126 negative strip with an epson perf. v600 photo scanner, how do you solve the problem of the images being chopped in the middle |
Answer: | You have to scan in professional mode with thumbnails turned off. Please contact me via Amazon message if you have somehow lost the directions. |
