14 best 35mm negative scannings

35mm negative scanning is the process of converting 35mm film negatives into digital images using specialized equipment such as slide and negative scanners. This is a common practice for preserving old photographs and film negatives and making them easily shareable and accessible in the digital age. Here's what you need to know about 35mm negative scanning:

  1. Types of Scanners: There are dedicated negative and slide scanners designed specifically for scanning 35mm film. These scanners often have high-resolution sensors and specialized software to extract the maximum amount of detail from the film.

  2. Resolution: Scanners used for 35mm negatives typically offer high-resolution options to capture fine details. Higher resolutions are essential if you plan to enlarge the scanned images or want to preserve the original quality.

  3. Color Correction: Many negative scanners come with color correction features to restore the colors of aged film negatives accurately. This helps in improving the overall quality of the scanned images.

  4. Dust and Scratch Removal: Scanning software often includes tools for removing dust, scratches, and other imperfections commonly found on old negatives. This post-processing feature can significantly enhance the final digital images.

  5. Batch Scanning: Some scanners allow for batch scanning, meaning you can load multiple negatives at once to save time. This is especially useful when you have a large collection of negatives to digitize.

  6. File Formats: Scanned images can be saved in various file formats such as JPEG, TIFF, or RAW.TIFF and RAW formats are typically preferred for preserving the highest quality and allowing for further editing.

  7. Storage and Organization: Once scanned, digital images can be stored on a computer or external storage device. Proper organization and labeling of the scanned images are essential for easy retrieval and management.

  8. Editing and Enhancement: After scanning, you can use photo editing software to further enhance the scanned images, adjust colors, contrast, and remove imperfections. This step can help bring old photographs back to life.

  9. Archiving: Digitizing 35mm negatives not only makes them easily shareable but also helps in preserving them for future generations. Digital files are less prone to deterioration and can be backed up for added security.

  10. Professional Services: If you have a large number of negatives or want the highest quality scans, you may consider professional scanning services. They have specialized equipment and expertise to handle various film formats.

In summary, 35mm negative scanning is the process of converting 35mm film negatives into digital images using dedicated scanners. This process allows for the preservation, enhancement, and easy sharing of old photographs and negatives, making it a valuable tool for archiving and digitizing memories.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this for my aps film negatives
Answer: I had no problem with the resolution of either 35mm color or B&W negs. 35mm slides are no problem either, as long as you remove them from the slide holders (plastic or cardboard usually). the only problem I had was that the unit only lasted two months before it fried, and when it quit it also took out a high dollar flash drive chip ($70.00) that I'll have to replace.
Question: Do these hold 35 mm negatives flat or slightly arched
Answer: When you convert a negative, either black and white or color, it get digitally saved as a positive. A color negative converts to a beautiful perfect color photograph and a Black a white negative gives you a nice black and white photograph and you can print them perfectly without need to develop further.

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: How many sleeves are in "one pack
Answer: Go to the website for the company and download the driver. Once it’s installed it should show up in your printer list when you go to print. Then choose Logia. And also set up your checkout settings if you are using it for labels to ship for 4 x 6 labels.
Question: How wide is each pocket/sleeve? I don't want to use them for negatives
Answer: I’m not sure, but if you can set up 4 x 6 labels in your settings it should work. This works like any printer, the dialog box I opens for your printers and you select Logia.
Question: Is this listing for the negative sleeves, because images show a webcam, makes it confusing
Answer: Free labels from UPS or FEDEX. HIGHLY RECOMMEND looking into this if you're a business owner.
Question: Has anyone found a binder that fits these
Answer: We have used it to print monochrome labels for samples. We use MS-Word to create the labels in the correct size layout. However those labels must be saved as PDF’s to print out as PDF’s. You cannot print a native MS-Word label to this and other thermal. Printers. It is a bug in all versions of MS-Word. So we know that PDF’s, properly formatted will print. Maybe other software to create labels will print natively, but if not, you can use the save as PDF and print the PDF’s.

A sophisticated generation of amateur photographers who observed how time, humidity and casual storage damaged valuable slides and prints, nowadays, have converted to using archival storage techniques. They, too, appreciate that a picture good enough to keep is good enough to keep forever. User questions & answers

Question: My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images
Answer: Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon.
Question: What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb
Answer: Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me.
Question: Does it scan black and white film
Answer: No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs.
Question: Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm
Answer: I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it scan half-frame 35 mm slides
Answer: If the half-frame slides are mounted in standard 2"×2" mounts you can easily load them in the slide carrier. You can crop the image in the scanning software or subsequently in other image editing software.
Question: How many mp (megapixels) is the max. capability of this scanner? maybe i don't understand the math, but 10k x 10k seems like 100mp... is that correct
Answer: Your math is basically correct. A full frame 35mm negative at 10K resolution is about 9000 by 13000 pixels, which, as you noted is 117 Mpixels (and just over a GB if you save the IR layer along with all the colors). I also believe (but can't locate the source) that the actual scan limits are 5K along the CCD and 10K for the stepper, implying that interpolated values are used for every other horizontal pixel.
Question: Will this work with Windows 10 an its latest builds
Answer: I am using it on Windows 10 build 1809 and it works very well.
Question: I don't understand why this pacific scanner has much higher rating/reviews than the more expensive/more capable pacific xas scanner? & the plustek's
Answer: Probably it's because the XAs has an automatic film advance mechanism that reviewers say is unreliable and breaks. This model is essentially the same without the auto film advance.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with an epson v370 scanner
Answer: I have stored all my 35 mm negative strips in these.
Question: Does it work for HP envy 7855 printer
Answer: The overall length is 11-1/4 inches long and overall width is 8-3/4 inches . The slip that holds the negative is 7 1/2 inches wide. It holds 7 negative strips of 5 frames. It has 7 hole punches, giving you different options. It fits a standard size binder. I’m very pleased with all the products from Print File. The quality, quantity and promptness of delivery makes this very cost effective if you’re doing picture and negative volume. Hope this helps.
Question: Would it work for Epson XP 640 model
Answer: Yes, the pages that are five frames wide fit a standard 3-ring binder perfectly. The pages that are six frames wide fit also, but because they are a bit wider, they tend to overhang the binder a bit. You won't have that issue with the 'seven strips of five' pages. Also, they are easier to contact print because they cover an 8"x10"sheet of photographic paper perfectly. Not true of the 'six strips of six' pages. The only disadvantage is the inherent limit of 35 frames per page. If you squeeze all 36 exposures out of a roll of film, then they won't all fit in one page.
Question: Is this everything i need to scan 35mm slides and negative film with my epson perfection v600 photo scanner? i misplaced the original
Answer: I have Print File Archival Preservers style No 33-78, and they have an opening at both ends. I've not had trouble with the negatives sliding around in the sleeve once they are inserted. I put them in notebooks that I store flat, and I am not in them very often.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine
Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.
