13 best 35 film scanners

A 35mm film scanner is a specialized device used to digitize or convert 35mm photographic film (typically slides and negatives) into digital image files. These scanners are related to office electronics and are often used by photographers, archivists, and enthusiasts for various purposes. Here's what you need to know about 35mm film scanners:

  1. Film Compatibility: 35mm film scanners are designed specifically to work with 35mm photographic film, which includes both 35mm slides and negatives. Some models may also support other film formats like 110 or 126 film.

  2. Resolution: These scanners vary in terms of their scanning resolution, which determines the level of detail captured in the digital images. Higher resolution scanners can produce more detailed and high-quality scans. Resolution is typically measured in dots per inch (dpi).

  3. Color Depth: Film scanners often offer a range of color depth options, such as 24-bit or 48-bit color. A higher color depth allows for a wider range of colors and tones to be captured during the scanning process.

  4. Scan Speed: The scanning speed can vary between different models. Faster scanners are more efficient for scanning large volumes of film, while slower ones may be preferred for higher-quality scans.

  5. Image Correction Features: Many 35mm film scanners come with built-in image correction and enhancement features. These may include dust and scratch removal, color correction, and exposure adjustment. These features can help improve the quality of scanned images.

  6. Connectivity: Film scanners can connect to a computer or other devices through various means, including USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. Some models may also have memory card slots for standalone scanning and image storage.

  7. Software: Scanners often come with software for controlling the scanning process and editing scanned images. The quality and capabilities of the bundled software can vary between brands and models.

  8. LCD Screen: Some film scanners have built-in LCD screens that allow you to preview and edit scanned images directly on the scanner before saving them to a computer.

  9. File Formats: Scanners typically allow you to save scanned images in various file formats, such as JPEG, TIFF, or RAW. The choice of format can affect the image quality and file size.

  10. Archiving and Sharing: 35mm film scanners are useful for archiving old photographic film collections, restoring vintage photos, and sharing digitized images with others online or in digital photo albums.

  11. Price Range: The price of 35mm film scanners can vary widely depending on their features and capabilities. Entry-level models are more affordable, while high-end scanners with advanced features are pricier.

In summary, 35mm film scanners are specialized devices that allow you to convert analog 35mm photographic film (slides and negatives) into digital image files. They come with various features and options to suit different needs, from basic scanning to advanced image enhancement and correction. These scanners are valuable tools for preserving and sharing photographic memories and are commonly used by photographers and archivists.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: will this scan 126 and 110 film
Answer: No. Scans 35mm film only.
Question: Dose it scan full frame or cropped
Answer: It scans full frame.
Question: Can it scan 35mm panoramas
Answer: Yes, it can scan a few types of panoramas including Horizon 24x58, Widelux 24x59, and XPan 24x65. For Panramas, it scan scan a maximum of 3 frames per strip, which is about the same as 6 frames for normal 135.
Question: Will this scan an entire roll of uncut 35mm film at one time
Answer: No it won’t. The machine does it by 6 negatives per “slide”. Once the slide is done it’ll eject the film it scanned and on to the next one. You will have to cut the roll into strips of 6 for it to work the best, but strips of 4 will work well too. However the company advertises only being able to scan a batch of 10 strips, and I was able to reliably scan about 15 with no issues.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

Question: my sd card doesnt fit Why
Answer: The battery does not appear to be user serviceable as it is soldered to the circuit board.
Question: can the slide tray be repoaced
Answer: I have 256GB in mine, amazing that this sub-$100 device can accept such a large card, yet the $100+ Zoom and h1N and Zoom f1 can't accept more than 32GB.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it scan half-frame 35 mm slides
Answer: If the half-frame slides are mounted in standard 2"×2" mounts you can easily load them in the slide carrier. You can crop the image in the scanning software or subsequently in other image editing software.
Question: How many mp (megapixels) is the max. capability of this scanner? maybe i don't understand the math, but 10k x 10k seems like 100mp... is that correct
Answer: Your math is basically correct. A full frame 35mm negative at 10K resolution is about 9000 by 13000 pixels, which, as you noted is 117 Mpixels (and just over a GB if you save the IR layer along with all the colors). I also believe (but can't locate the source) that the actual scan limits are 5K along the CCD and 10K for the stepper, implying that interpolated values are used for every other horizontal pixel.
Question: Will this work with Windows 10 an its latest builds
Answer: I am using it on Windows 10 build 1809 and it works very well.
Question: I don't understand why this pacific scanner has much higher rating/reviews than the more expensive/more capable pacific xas scanner? & the plustek's
Answer: Probably it's because the XAs has an automatic film advance mechanism that reviewers say is unreliable and breaks. This model is essentially the same without the auto film advance.

User questions & answers

Question: Which button do I push to actually save the image
Answer: See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides).
Question: Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air
Answer: I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer.
Question: Does this work with 16mm reels
Answer: If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie.
Question: My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine.
Question: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files
Answer: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well.
Question: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans
Answer: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners.
Question: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you
Answer: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan.
Question: Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience
Answer: Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with windows 10 and latter os version? does this come with drivers for windows
Answer: I have Windows 10 and it works fine for me. Installed the files that came with the scanner and after registering the software I upgraded to the latest release of the program
Question: Does it work on Mac? Thanks
Answer: HI Trailblazer Yes, OpticFilm 8200i SE support Mac 10.8-10.14 . You can see detail spec from plustek website https://plustek.com/usa/products/film-and-photo-scanners/opticfilm-8200i-se/ Plustek
Question: How long it takes (mm:ss) for full resolution scan - with 2x multi-exposure and iSRD (dust removal) on. Thanks
Answer: It all up to your computer. A fast computer wold take about 2 minutes. Per Plustek.Good Question.Anthony J Argy SrFull Color Copier Inc.
Question: How "One Touch" is one touch? I want to scan thousands of slides into tiffs and later spend time with only a few to "fix" with software editor
Answer: The scanner does not have an automatic advance for slides or film, rather you put the content into the carriage, then insert it to the scanner and each advance is manual. Once you get your settings for scanning set, save them and reload the settings each session. You can simply advance the carriage to each image then click the 'scan' button. It's pretty quick. Your sessions can be for whatever film or negative you have. For thousands of slides, you're going to want to be patient. Scanning takes 30 seconds or so per frame, depending on the dpi you choose, but this is nowhere close to a 'thousand slides in an evening' proposition...

Plustek OpticFilm 35mm film and slide scanner – High resolution, high quality digital images from your film and slides

The OpticFilm 8200i SE is a high-performance 35mm film and slide scanner that outputs brilliant digital images from analog film. It’s ideal for digitizing slides, color film and black and white film.

It’s the perfect scanner for professional and amature film photographers, and people that simply want to convert their old film and slides to digital format.

The OpticFilm 8200i SE uses a CCD sensor with 7200dpi high-resolution, specifically designed for film scanning, with 48-bit color bit depth that captures all the details from the original film. The scanner’s infrared channel removes dust and scratches eliminated the need for extensive post-processing correction.

State of the art imaging system

The Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE is designed with state-of-the-art illumination and optical systems.

It uses a high-sensitivity color CCD sensor and LED illumination to ensure optimal image quality.

The built-in infrared channel detects dust and scratches on the film surface and automatically removes them.

7200 DPI High Resolution

This dedicated 35mm film scanner features true 7200 dpi optical resolution that ensures sharp and vivid images. Output files up to 68.9 megapixels are similar to those created by a full frame digital-SLR camera.

You can create high-quality enlargement prints up to 36” x 24”.

High Dynamic Range

Dynamic range is the range of recordable light from darkest to lightest on the exposed film that a scanner can read.

With a dynamic range of up to 3.6 D, you will rediscover how beautiful and natural the highlights and shadows are in analog photography.

iSRD - Infrared Dust and Scratch Removal

Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully.

The OpticFilm 8200i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. Infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it. SilverFast iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows.

The image is scanned two times - the first is the regular scan and the second is the additional infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only. Then the calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.

In conclusion, OpticFilm 8200i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.

Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process eliminating the need for post-process removal of dust and scratches.

Professional-grade software for scanning and optimizing scanned images

The Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE scanner is bundled with SilverFast SE Plus 8.

SilverFast software is designed for both professionals and beginners for digitizing their analog images. Its intelligent automatic functions make it much easier to get brilliant results and exceed your expectations.

For Example:

  • SilverFast NegaFix with over 120 profiles for negative film ensures best results when converting negatives into brilliant scanned images.
  • SilverFast iSRDx feature is perfect for correcting dust and scratches on slides and color negatives without sharpness loss.
  • SilverFast Multi-Exposure reveals more shadow details and creates less image noise.

SilverFast software is available for both Mac and Windows platforms and also includes a native Adobe Photoshop plug-in.

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images
Answer: Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon.
Question: What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb
Answer: Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me.
Question: Does it scan black and white film
Answer: No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs.
Question: Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm
Answer: I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone else have the same problem as I have with this device? It crops 35mm slide severely - the portrait I want has no upper third face
Answer: I believe you’re using the wrong size setting for film. I would try using a different size millimeter of film and see if that changes the amount of picture you get. Or you might be using the wrong insert when you put the slide in to the black plate
Question: How do you advance the film? The only way I could find was to pull on the other end, but then you miss the first frame
Answer: It’s a tedious process. I start by centering the first frame in the tray window, scanning it, then pushing the negative through until it appears on the other side. Then I pull it through for the rest of the strip. I recommend wearing powder-free nitrile gloves when working to avoid damaging the film with fingerprints...
Question: Does the device automatically feed the film for viewing
Answer: No, you must manually feed the film. Same for all of these scanners.
Question: how is the interface with macOS Big Sur v

Question: Is this the same product as the scanner included in all the bundles sold here some of which are 50% more expensive
Answer: These were for an old Yakima acoustic guitar. Might check out the resonator sites and see what they have to say.
Question: Does the 35 mm film have to be developed to use this device
Answer: G string is wound. I have the medium.
Question: It keeps saying it's full. i've got it hooked up via hdmi to laptop and an sd card <32gb. it will read but won't save. suggestions
Answer: Not sure but I've had 2 strings explode at the bridge. Love the tone but have never broke string until I bought these
Question: What kind of light source does this use? Does it generate heat
Answer: Yes it sure does, and they are the best, most extraordinary strings I've ever used. So bright, crisp, and full of punch. The bass strings are just as loud and punchy as the trebles. I hope this helps you hunter. God bless.

User questions & answers

Question: What size sd card can be used. can you save to a usb
Answer: A 16Gig SD card comes with scanner. I have used a 25 gig but nothing larger. The scanner will interface with a computer via usb and will interface with tv via HDMI. Hope this helps.
