14 best flatbed film scanners

Flatbed film scanners are specialized scanning devices designed for digitizing film negatives and slides, as well as printed photographs and documents. They are commonly used in photography, graphic design, and archival purposes. Here are some key points about flatbed film scanners:

  1. Functionality: Flatbed film scanners work by illuminating the film or document placed on a flat, glass surface and capturing a high-resolution digital image of it. They are equipped with sensors and optics specifically optimized for scanning film, ensuring accurate color reproduction and fine detail capture.

  2. Types of Film Supported: These scanners can handle various film formats, including 35mm film strips, 35mm slides, medium format film (120/220), and sometimes even larger formats like 4x5 inches. They provide the flexibility to digitize a wide range of film materials.

  3. Resolution: Flatbed film scanners offer high optical resolutions, often measured in dots per inch (DPI) or pixels per inch (PPI). Higher resolutions allow for more detailed and larger prints when working with digitized images.

  4. Color Accuracy: Many flatbed film scanners feature advanced color management technologies to ensure accurate color reproduction. This is crucial for preserving the original colors and tones of film images.

  5. Dust and Scratch Removal: Some models include built-in dust and scratch removal features, such as Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement) technology. These features help to automatically remove imperfections from scanned images, saving time in post-processing.

  6. Software and Drivers: Scanners typically come with scanning software that allows users to control scanning settings, adjust image quality, and save images in various formats. Compatibility with both Windows and Mac operating systems is common.

  7. Connectivity: Flatbed film scanners can connect to a computer via USB or other standard interfaces. They are generally compatible with most modern computers.

  8. Price Range: The cost of flatbed film scanners can vary widely depending on the brand, model, and features.More advanced models with higher resolutions and additional features tend to be more expensive.

  9. Archival and Restoration: These scanners are often used for archival purposes to preserve old photographs and negatives. They are also valuable tools for restoring and enhancing vintage or damaged images.

  10. Image Editing: Once images are scanned, they can be edited and retouched using image editing software to enhance their quality or make adjustments as needed.

Flatbed film scanners are an essential tool for photographers, archivists, and anyone looking to digitize film-based images and documents. Their ability to capture fine details, accurate colors, and their versatility in handling various film formats make them a valuable asset in the world of digital imaging.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster
Answer: I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures.
Question: Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot
Answer: There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there.
Question: How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution
Answer: I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE.
Question: Will this scanner convert negatives to prints
Answer: It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required...

Question: How long it takes (mm:ss) for full resolution scan - with 2x multi-exposure and iSRD (dust removal) on. Thanks
Answer: It all up to your computer. A fast computer wold take about 2 minutes. Per Plustek.Good Question.Anthony J Argy SrFull Color Copier Inc.
Question: How "One Touch" is one touch? I want to scan thousands of slides into tiffs and later spend time with only a few to "fix" with software editor
Answer: The scanner does not have an automatic advance for slides or film, rather you put the content into the carriage, then insert it to the scanner and each advance is manual. Once you get your settings for scanning set, save them and reload the settings each session. You can simply advance the carriage to each image then click the 'scan' button. It's pretty quick. Your sessions can be for whatever film or negative you have. For thousands of slides, you're going to want to be patient. Scanning takes 30 seconds or so per frame, depending on the dpi you choose, but this is nowhere close to a 'thousand slides in an evening' proposition...

The OpticFilm 8200i SE is a high-performance 35mm film and slide scanner that outputs brilliant digital images from analog film. It’s ideal for digitizing slides, color film and black and white film.

It’s the perfect scanner for professional and amature film photographers, and people that simply want to convert their old film and slides to digital format.

The OpticFilm 8200i SE uses a CCD sensor with 7200dpi high-resolution, specifically designed for film scanning, with 48-bit color bit depth that captures all the details from the original film. The scanner’s infrared channel removes dust and scratches eliminated the need for extensive post-processing correction.

State of the art imaging system

The Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE is designed with state-of-the-art illumination and optical systems.

It uses a high-sensitivity color CCD sensor and LED illumination to ensure optimal image quality.

The built-in infrared channel detects dust and scratches on the film surface and automatically removes them.

7200 DPI High Resolution

This dedicated 35mm film scanner features true 7200 dpi optical resolution that ensures sharp and vivid images. Output files up to 68.9 megapixels are similar to those created by a full frame digital-SLR camera.

You can create high-quality enlargement prints up to 36” x 24”.

High Dynamic Range

Dynamic range is the range of recordable light from darkest to lightest on the exposed film that a scanner can read.

With a dynamic range of up to 3.6 D, you will rediscover how beautiful and natural the highlights and shadows are in analog photography.

iSRD - Infrared Dust and Scratch Removal

Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully.

The OpticFilm 8200i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. Infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it. SilverFast iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows.

The image is scanned two times - the first is the regular scan and the second is the additional infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only. Then the calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.

In conclusion, OpticFilm 8200i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.

Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process eliminating the need for post-process removal of dust and scratches.

Answer: Not sure what a negative tray set is, but this can do negatives, 1 at a time. There is a setting you make before scanning that changes the mode to negatives. Unlike some more expensive models that allow you to do several frames or photos at a time, this is made for just one at a time.
Question: Looking for a viewer/scanner to accommodate 6cm x 9cm negatives
Answer: not sound like most film size
Question: Does it convert the negative to a positive image in the viewfinder
Answer: This is a crap product, cheaply made and useless. I threw mine away. It does NOT convert the negative to a positive image.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this scanner produce a better or worse product than a flatbed scanner
Answer: Included sample pictures in my review (~July 2020). The flatbed scanned image pixelates much sooner than the negative image captured by the slide scanner. Neither image is as clear as the original photo processed from the camera negative, and both scanning formats are very sensitive to dust, so make sure to clean not only the negative, but also the negative scanner unit. I did not consider the Wolverine a great value, and I am still searching for a commercial photo lab to make prints/images from my negatives.
Question: Correction, I meant can I scan 4x5 negatives
Answer: The opening is only large enough for a 35MM Slide. So NO it will not do 4x5 Negatives. Carriers are with the unit down to 8mm film.
Question: Product description says microfiche is supported, but how? I have 3"x5" sheets of microfiche images. Cut the sheets into strips of 1/2"x1/2" images
Answer: My Wolverine came also with a tray for 120 film - Aperture 3.5" wide x 2.25" high. This might work? Or the vendor MAY sell a tray specifically for 3"x5" ... but I suspect that this is a bit too large for the viewing screen (which is about the same as the 3.5" x 2.25" aperture of the 120 film slide tray.
Question: Will this also scan microfilm
Answer: This comes with several adapters for various negative sizes. Will your negative fit? Depends on the size. If not this one, I’m sure there is one out there that can do it.

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with Windows 7 64 bit
Answer: I have a LIDE210 and Win7 64 bit. The scanner is not detected by Device manager. I cannot find a Win7x64 bit driver on the Canon website. If anyone knows where such a driver is available I would be very interested in knowing.
Question: How long does it take to scan a photo or series of photos on the flatbed
Answer: It depends on the resolution of the scan. At highest resolution, full color 600dpi, it can take about 30 seconds, but full color at 300 dpi takes 10 seconds, and much less if you go to black and white text, and around 200 dpi, which is plenty high enough for a page of text, in which case less than 5 seconds. The nice feature about this scanner is that if you place a bunch of pictures on the scanner glass, and leave separation between them, it will recognize they are individual pictures and then trim and present you separate scanned images, as if you had scanned the pictures separately. But it's a bit tricky to be sure they are not close together, because if placed edge to edge, it appears to the scanner they are all part of one big picture.
Question: Does this scanner include OCR software
Answer: OCR software is included.
Question: does product come with USB cable
Answer: If you look down the page it says YES!What's in the Box CanoScan LiDE210 Color Image Scanner, Document Kit: Cross Sell Sheet, Quick Start & Spec. Sheet, Safety Precautions, Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM, Warranty Card, USB Cable
