13 best film scanners
A film scanner is a specialized type of scanner designed for digitizing film negatives, slides, and other photographic film formats. These devices are commonly used by photographers, archivists, and hobbyists to convert analog images into digital files for viewing, editing, and preservation. Here are some key points about film scanners:
Purpose: Film scanners are specifically designed to scan photographic film, including negatives and slides, and convert them into digital image files. This process allows for easy viewing, editing, and sharing of old or analog photos.
Types: There are several types of film scanners, including dedicated film scanners, flatbed scanners with film scanning capabilities, and film scanning attachments for digital cameras. Dedicated film scanners often provide the highest image quality and resolution.
Resolution: Film scanners are known for their high resolution capabilities, allowing users to capture fine details from film negatives and slides. Resolution is typically measured in dots per inch (dpi), and higher resolutions are desirable for preserving image quality.
Color Depth: Film scanners often support high color depths, such as 48-bit or 64-bit, which can capture a wide range of colors and tones in the digitized images.
Film Formats: Film scanners are compatible with various film formats, including 35mm, 120/220 medium format, 4x5 large format, and slides. Some models are versatile and can handle multiple formats.
Software: Film scanners are usually bundled with software that allows users to adjust settings, such as color correction, exposure, and dust removal. This software helps improve the quality of scanned images.
Speed: Scanning speed can vary among film scanner models. Some scanners are faster than others, but the focus is often on image quality rather than speed.
Dust and Scratch Removal: Many film scanners come equipped with features for dust and scratch removal. This is especially important when scanning old film that may have accumulated debris over time.
Connectivity: Film scanners typically connect to a computer via USB or other standard interfaces. They may also have memory card slots for standalone scanning and image storage.
Archiving and Restoration: Film scanners are valuable tools for archiving and restoring old or damaged photographs. Digitizing film can help preserve memories and ensure that images are not lost due to deterioration over time.
Flatbed Scanners with Film Scanning: Some flatbed photo scanners offer film scanning capabilities as an additional feature. These scanners have a transparent scanning bed and a light source underneath to illuminate the film.
In summary, film scanners are specialized devices used for converting photographic film into digital images. They are particularly useful for photographers and archivists looking to preserve and digitize analog images for modern use and archival purposes. The choice of a film scanner depends on the user's specific needs and the film formats they want to digitize.

Question: | Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine |
Answer: | Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results. |
Question: | Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks |
Answer: | I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly. |
Question: | will this accept 2 5/8 size slides |
Answer: | Which/what mode? |
Question: | can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters |
Answer: | This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I slide 16mm film through the 110 adapter |
Answer: | I don't have 16mm film. 110 is also 16mm wide so it should slide through. You will have to crop the edges because 16mm frame size (aperture) is smaller. |
Question: | Can you use a 64 GB card |
Answer: | According to the User's Manual the card must be 32 GB or less and Class 10 or higher. I am using a 32 GB card and have no issues. ALTHOUGH I have also tried a 128 GB Samsung Pro Endurance Micro SD card in a SD adapter and it worked. I would then assume that your 64 GB card would work. |
Question: | What is the output resolution of the scanned jpgs |
Answer: | You have a choice of 14 or 22.megs. A completed scan (jpeg) is about 1.5 megabytes. |
Question: | Does it save the digital image in the jpeg format |
Answer: | Yes it saves as a jpeg |

User questions & answers
Question: | My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images |
Answer: | Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon. |
Question: | What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb |
Answer: | Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me. |
Question: | Does it scan black and white film |
Answer: | No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs. |
Question: | Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm |
Answer: | I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well does this scanner work with APS negatives |
Answer: | It takes standard 35mm slides or film strips only. Most of mine are from the 50s and 60s. What size film were you using? |
Question: | Is this scanner compatible with Mac |
Answer: | I have software and a Quickstart Guide - also safety instructions - The only address I have is: World Headquarters - 200 Scenic View rive - Cumberland, RI 02864 or website www.ionaudio.com |
Question: | Can you push the slides through or do you have to reload the tray |
Answer: | I would do one slide at a time. |
Question: | Wht is the scanner resolution in dpi |
Answer: | Yes it works with mounted slides. Aren't all slides mounted? However the slider mechanism jams regularly and has to be pulled out of the ION and you have to fiddle with it to get the slides to go through. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this invert colors so that the film negative shows as a color picture or does it just enlarge the negative |
Answer: | You are right, the image will be mostly black. There is a holder for 8mm film but you would have to take the film out of the cardboard. |
Question: | Can this copy to usb |
Answer: | My instruction book says the scanner has 128MB of built memory available to store about 50 scanned images. The scanner will also accept SD, SDHC and SDXC cards with a max of 128GB. I have not found a way to tell how much memory is in the scanner. I have scanned over 1400 slides so far and it is great. The scanner has a counter that counts the number of scans but I wish there was a way to reset it. The Model FS51 has 64mB of internal memory per the specifications, Maybe the rep was looking at this one. Hope this helps. |
Question: | The description and reviews are a bit confusing, will the scanner convert b&w and color negatives to good quality photos? thanks |
Answer: | It scans all negative film, up to 35mm. |
Question: | Receives a yellow exclamation pint. What does that mean |
Answer: | It covers fully the entire film. You have to be careful how you load into scanner but it will scan all the film. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will it do round negative discs |
Answer: | John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally. |
Question: | I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg |
Answer: | I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable! |
Question: | Does it work with medium format film negatives |
Answer: | Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner. |
Question: | Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light |
Answer: | This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which button do I push to actually save the image |
Answer: | See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides). |
Question: | Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air |
Answer: | I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer. |
Question: | Does this work with 16mm reels |
Answer: | If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie. |
Question: | My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine. |
Question: | So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files |
Answer: | You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well. |
Question: | how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans |
Answer: | I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners. |
Question: | How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you |
Answer: | I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan. |
Question: | Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience |
Answer: | Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia |
