The American-made Goodtime banjo features a slender, rock maple neck, 3-ply maple rim, sealed geared tuners, and an adjustable tailpiece. The natural, blond maple is finished in elegant satin and the metal parts are nickel plated. The single coordinator rod makes adjustments easy and positive. The maple and ebony bridge sits on an easy to adjust 11 inch, top-frosted head.
The Deering Goodtime is a great banjo at a competitive price, constructed in the U.S. The Goodtime is an open-back banjo, weighing in at just four pounds, so it's ideal for traveling, camping, hiking, or taking to the beach. It provides a vibrant, singing banjo tone, and makes a great "starter" banjo, since it's well-fretted and plays easily.
Slim Neck Profile
The Goodtime banjos have a slender, low-profile neck that is easy to finger and comfortable for large and small hands. The fret work is accurate and precise to ensure correct intonation over the entire fingerboard.
Satin Deering fiddle-shaped peghead with sealed, geared tuning machines.
Three-ply maple rims are standard on all Goodtime banjos.
Adjustable Action
You can adjust the action (string height) on the Goodtime banjo by adjusting the single coordinator rod in the pot easily and effectively adjusts the playability so that the strings are close to the fingerboard and are easy to press down.
Three-Ply Maple Rim
The Rim is the round wood drum part of the banjo: In 2009 Greg Deering finished new tooling to make all Goodtime rims in the higher grade 3-ply maple design. Prior to that they were laminated birch and maple rims. This standard 11-inch diameter rim provides a top quality sound that out performs all other banjos available in this price range. Thanks to this new upgrade, Goodtime banjos sound like they should cost far more they do.
Goodtime Tailpiece
The patented Goodtime tailpiece is extremely strong and easily adjustable to maximize tone by raising or lowering it.The standard 11" diameter rim is a 3-ply violin grade maple rim provides a top quality sound that outperforms many banjos available in this price range. The 16 brackets and standard rim diameter make head adjustments easy and replacement heads are readily available since the heads are the same size as most modern banjos (11" high crown).
Made in the U.S.A.
Deering manufactures the Goodtime Banjo in America at the Deering Banjo Company in Spring Valley, California.

A resonator back provides more projection of sound in the Goodtime 2. It's made here in the USA, at the Deering shop with the same tooling used to make the top of the line banjos. Greg Deering designed the Goodtime banjos because there were no low priced banjos of enough quality for people to actually learn on without difficulty or giving up. He remembers what it was like to want a good banjo and not be able to afford one, so his gift to others is the Goodtime banjo line.
- Slender rock maple neck
- Sealed geared tuners
- Three-ply maple rim
- Adjustable tailpiece
- Single Bound Maple Resonator
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this banjo come with a case |
Answer: | The banjo does not come with a case. |
Question: | I don't see the arm shield on the banjo in the picture, is this not included and must be purchased separate |
Answer: | I failed to mention in my first answer to your question. Yes, the Deering Goodtime 2 banjo does come with an arm rest. |
Question: | I am a newbie. Is this banjo worth it? I really want to learn to play and I have heard great things about Deering banjos |
Answer: | One thing to keep in mind is that the better the instrument, the higher the resale value. So yes, the Oscar Schmidt is less expensive and gives a good bang for the buck, but if you want to resell the Oscar Schmidt later, you will not get your money back. If you buy a Dearing Goodtime and take good care of it, you will later be able to sell if for about what you paid for it. This holds with guitars as well. If you buy an Epiphone Les Paul you will have to sell it at a loss later, but if you buy a Gibson Les Paul Standard (which is not cheap), you might actually be able to sell it 25 years later for more than what you paid for it. The value of high quality instruments goes up over time and has done so consistently for the past 60 years. You might still think the Oscar Schmidt or Epiphone or Squier (the label that makes budget versions of Fender guitars) is a better choice for you and that the eventual loss of $200 or $400 or whatever (depending on how much you spend on the budget instrument) is no big deal. One other thing to keep in mind is that more expensive instruments are usually (though not always) easier to play. For instance, i first learned to play guitar on a used Yamaha with a slightly bent neck. It was HARD. A couple of decades later i got a midrange Taylor and almost overnight i became a vastly better guitarist. Likewise, i got an Epiphone to learn electric on, but a few later when i upgraded to a PRS, I was shocked at how quickly i made progress with the new guitar. I later got a Dearing to learn banjo on, mainly because i suspected i would make more progress with it. I don't know if it really helped, but my bias today is that I prefer to buy a premium instrument both so that it will be easier to play and so that it will bring more money when and if I sell it. |
Question: | Can it be played without the resonator and is the resonator easily removed |
Answer: | Yes it can. The resonator simply adds volume to the banjo by projecting the sound forward. It just takes a minute or two to remove it. All that is needed is a phillips head screwdriver. |

Answer: | yes it is an open back. amazing sound. terrific instrument! |

Answer: | This banjo should fit in any open back banjo hard shell case that will fit side mounted tuners on the headstock. It will not fit in a rear facing tuner hard shell case. Thank you. |
Question: | Closed or open back |
Answer: | For the money this is the best for playabillity and tone quality. They arn't flashy or shiny but the banjo is solid rock maple and travels well. If you like a resonator style banjo they make tis banjo in a resonator style for around a hundred more.Hope this helps. |
