12 best soundproofing generators
Soundproofing generators is essential to minimize the noise they produce, especially in studio environments or situations where noise pollution is a concern. Here's what you need to know about soundproofing generators:
Importance of Soundproofing: Soundproofing generators is crucial in scenarios where quiet operation is necessary, such as recording studios, film sets, or residential areas. It helps reduce noise pollution and ensures a more peaceful and conducive environment.
Acoustical Treatments: Soundproofing involves various acoustical treatments aimed at blocking, absorbing, or isolating sound waves generated by the generator. These treatments can include:
- Acoustic Panels: Installing sound-absorbing panels on the walls can help reduce sound reflections and echoes.
- Acoustic Insulation: Adding insulation materials within walls and ceilings can improve sound isolation.
- Acoustic Enclosures: Building a dedicated enclosure around the generator can contain the noise and prevent it from escaping.
Vibration Isolation: Generators produce not only airborne noise but also vibrations. To address this, vibration isolation methods are used. This can involve mounting the generator on vibration-dampening materials or isolating it from the building structure to prevent vibrations from transferring through.
Exhaust Silencers: Generators often have exhaust systems that contribute to noise. Exhaust silencers or mufflers can be installed to reduce the noise generated by the exhaust gases.
Distance and Placement: Placing the generator as far away as possible from sensitive areas or using barriers between the generator and sound-sensitive areas can help reduce the impact of noise.
Proper Ventilation: It's crucial to ensure that any soundproofing measures don't compromise the ventilation or cooling requirements of the generator. Adequate airflow is necessary to prevent overheating.
Consultation and Design: Designing an effective soundproofing solution often requires consultation with acoustical engineers or experts who can assess the specific needs of the environment and recommend appropriate treatments.
Compliance with Regulations: Depending on your location and intended use, there may be local noise regulations and codes that dictate the acceptable noise levels for generators. Ensure your soundproofing measures align with these regulations.
Budget Considerations: The level of soundproofing you implement can vary widely in terms of complexity and cost.Consider your budget constraints when planning your soundproofing solution.
In summary, soundproofing generators involves a combination of acoustical treatments, vibration isolation, and careful planning to mitigate noise and vibrations effectively. This is essential in settings where noise control is critical, such as recording studios, residential areas, or any location where generator noise needs to be minimized.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use them as suspended ceiling tiles |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Can these be cut |
Answer: | Yes, you can cut these. |
Question: | What is the nrc and stc rating |
Answer: | Hello! The NRC rating is 0.9 Thank you |
Question: | My roommate is a spoon fed looser who plays fortnight all day and yells at his tv. Can I use this to put up on the wall and drone him out |
Answer: | This product will reduce echo or maybe some vibration. I would talk to him about your schedule or maybe you guys can rearrange bedrooms, so that he's further away from the wall on his pc vs your bed. Be direct, but polite. He might not even realize he's being too loud, since headphones block out a lot of sound (like earplugs). If you can't talk to ppl to resolve conflicts, you'll never be able to live with anyone, not just those you don't respect. Also, the green Mack earplugs work pretty well and are much more affordable than proper noise reduction if he doesn't care even after you guys talk it out. Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this product be installed w/ adhesive inside of a Generac generator shell to reduce the noise of the generator? What temperatures can it take |
Answer: | the cut out hole is approx. 2" x 31/2 |
Question: | how do you mount this to an apartment wall |
Answer: | The LR Baggs Session is specifically designed for acoustic guitar. The EQ and other features such as Compression, Saturation and the High Pass Filter will not be in the correct frequency range for a bass guitar so they will have minimal if any effect. |
Question: | Is this 1lb/ sq ft? Is it reinforced |
Answer: | It depends on what you need. The Session is more of a "Post-EQ" type of pedal, where the Para (or its high-octane brother, the Venue) have a lot more tone-shaping options. It you have an instrument that is just "plug and play" and you want to give it some studio quality compression and saturation, the Session is your pedal. If you need an external pre-amp with full EQ, the Para-DI is the way to go. Also on the Para, watch your Treble, it's shelving, so it's boosting everything above it including the noise. Baggs fixed this on the Venue, and gave a tuner and mute as well. |
Question: | Can this safely be applied directly to the outside of a heating duct? If so how, just tape |
Answer: | According to the owner's manual, Input Impedance: 10 Megohms Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the demensions and the color of the dei thermal hood liner |
Answer: | Yes, this is the right product to stop noises from generators. We actually have a complete article in generators on our website. Temperature rating is 180 F for intermediate exposure; 145 F for continuous use. We offer heat shield products that can be used on top to block the heat too. |
Question: | will that work for indoor dampening |
Answer: | Normally it goes under the drywall, directly over the studs. But in buildings that are more restrictive of construction add ons, you would need to apply it on the wall with bolts with large washers that are drilled into the studs through the drywall. It is used on the walls between you and the noise and needs to be in full coverage across the wall to perform best. |
Question: | How many of these would I need to cover the entire under hood of a toyota Supra or similar car? 12 sq feet seems like not enough |
Answer: | This listing is for the 1/4" 2lb per sqft option. We sell it in 1lb per sqft also. The tensile strength of either option is 600 PSI. |
Question: | is this item dei050130 a heat retarder and is it flexable.. i have a 57 ford failane and my hood gets very hot.. thanks for taking time for me |
Answer: | You can use mass loaded vinyl on the outside of SOME heating ducts. But you need to be sure that the heat level is not too high for the material. Assuming this is not a high-heat application, I'd actually recommend you go with our Luxury Liner Pro product. It comes with a fused closed-cell foam decoupling layer that allows the MLV to "float" off the duct. This creates a double wall effect and improves performance. Wrap the Luxury Liner Pro around the duct. Hold it in place with mechanical fasteners every few feet. Wrap the entire thing in foil tape. |

Stop unwanted noise with the right sound deadening materials.
At Second Skin, we pride ourselves in offering best-in-class solutions to help you eliminate unwanted noise and soundproof your car. Everything we sell has been tested in the field and in the lab to ensure you get the best possible results. We offer a comprehensive line of the best car insulation solutions for your vehicle. Whether you have rattling metal distorting your speakers, a car restoration side-gig, or just want to create a bubble of comfort for yourself as you drive down the highway, we have the high quality materials that will get you to your destination.
Why do cars make so much noise?
Noise inside the passenger compartment of a car comes from one of three sources:
- Wind Noise: Noise that enters through gaps, holes, and open windows.
- Structural Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle mechanical systems and travels through the vehicle structure before radiating into the passenger compartment.
- Airborne Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle systems or an external source and enters the passenger compartment by first traveling through air, then passing through a body panel, and finally reradiating into the passenger compartment.
To fix wind noise, you need to plug the holes. To stop structure borne noise, you have to damp the metal. To eliminate airborne noise, you need to block it with a noise barrier.
Quality materials matter. You’ll only make that mistake once.
Damplifier sound deadening mats are made of 100% butyl rubber. At 40mil thick, it’s half the rubber and weight of our Damplifier Pro mats. The foil constraint layer is composed of our reinforced, annealed aluminum foil to ensure the best damping performance. The butyl adhesive is extremely strong. Once applied, the permanent bond won’t come unstuck for the rest of the life of the vehicle. Damplifier will go with your vehicle to the scrapyard.
The result is a mat that punches substantially above its weight as a sound deadener, has best-in-class temperature rating (450 F), and best-in-class customer support as we’re available to you until you complete your build and beyond.
Now… to the low-quality stuff. Do yourself a favor and avoid asphalt-based products. If they don’t talk about “butyl rubber”, it’s because they don’t have it and their lawyers won’t let them. The problems you run into with asphalt is threefold:
- It stinks. If you open the box and it smells bad, take it back ASAP. It’s only going to get worse when you’re in your car on a hot summer day.
- It melts. We have dozens of examples where we helped a customer remove low quality asphalt from their car. It takes hours of work, and isn’t particularly fun.
- It outgasses chemicals. When you heat up asphalt, the fumes it releases are toxic to you, causing headaches, coughs, and worse (look it up). It’s not on the level of lead paint or asbestos, but why would you put it into your car?

Decide
Decide what parts of the car you want to insulate first: roof, floor, doors, trunk, firewall, or hood. Insulating each part of the vehicle has its benefits. You likely need to do a little detective work to identify the noisiest parts of your car or truck. For the best results, you’ll need to soundproof all of your vehicle’s metal surfaces. Before installing any material though, step #1 is always to expose the sheet metal. For any metal surfaces behind plastic panels or upholstery, you’ll need to research how to remove them. Be careful to avoid breaking plastic trim parts or any fasteners. Detailed step-by-step guides can be found on our website or the one of the many automotive forums.
Remove
Remove any damaged factory insulation after you’ve dismantled the interior. If the insulation is in good shape, you can choose to leave it and save yourself the trouble. Ensure all debris, rust, and waxy oils are removed from the application surface. Clean the surface with denatured alcohol and a dry, clean rag. We do not recommend using a solvent or degreaser, as they can leave behind a film that will prevent the best bond from forming. Allow the metal to dry.
Measure
Measure the cleaned surface where you want to apply your sound deadener. We recommend to start by making a pattern of an appropriate size on paper or cardboard and then transfer that to the sound deadening sheet. Taking the time to measure will give you a cleaner install and avoid wasting material. Use a sharp utility knife to trim the mat to the appropriate size. Our annealed foil constraint layer is sturdy, so we do not recommend scissors. Be careful and wear gloves. The foil edges are sharp.
Install
Hold the mat up to the metal surface of the vehicle where you’ll be applying it. Make sure you like the coverage before removing the wax paper and exposing the tacky butyl adhesive. For larger sheets, it can be easier to gradually remove the paper backing and slowly work your way across the panel. Use your hands to flatten the sheet and adhere it to the metal surface before rolling out any air pockets with a wooden hand roller. Pop any stubborn air bubbles with a pin. After you’ve smoothed out the butyl sheet with the roller, you’ve created a permanent bond that’ll stay stuck even under extreme conditions.
Sound Deadening
Sound deadening is the hidden secret behind the upholstery of any car project. To reduce road noise, use Damplifier to stop the structural noise generated by vibrating metal. Stop the vibrations, stop the noise.
Sound Blocking
After you’ve damped the structural noise, stop airborne noise with a sound blocking layer covering the entire floor and inside the doors. Luxury Liner Pro has a high r-value and STC rating, making it an ideal insulating noise barrier for engine, exhaust, and road noise.
Sound Absorption
Further quiet things down inside your vehicle with sound absorption materials. Mega Zorbe has a high r-value, making it excellent for the car roof, and a high sound absorption coefficient to reduce interior echoes and improve acoustics in door cavities.
- Strong sound insulation and absorption performance, heat insulation mat
- The surface high-fiber cloth is fiberglass. Heatproof.Block transmit sunlight, engine, exhaust pipe heat to the cab, reduce air conditioning energy consumption, saving fuel
- Slow down the life pipeline and circuit. In the summer, due to the hot weather, heat comes from the front cover of car, shortening the life of pipeline and circuit, accelerate cracking
- Slow down the car paint ageing.Because of hot weather, the front outer cover through the direct sun, high temperature inside and outside the engine, accelerated paint aging
- Keeps Heat In-Cold Out in the Winter, Keeps Cold in-Heat Out in the Summer. In the winter, the engine temperature is very high, but outside is very low when driving, which make car parts damaged easier
User questions & answers
Question: | How will this hold up to heat |
Answer: | It works like any other foil based insulation, as a heat barrier. I don't know where you intend to put it, but if you put it in the interior where it belongs, the heat will have to go through your floor pans or firewall...then the butyl....then the foil. It works. There might be better heat insulator out there designed specifically for that but this works well. If for some reason the sun is shining on it the black would naturally be a little warmer than metallic foil, but this stuff is generally hidden under carpet and behind door panels and stuff. The radiant heat shouldn't be coming from the foil side of the car |
Question: | How many of these should i order for an extra cab silverado. Want to do doors, floors, back wall |
Answer: | I cant give SXS experience, but I do have this stuff in my drag car and my 70's truck. It is 100% worth the money in both cases as far as sound and heat. I dont know exact temp drop in the drag car but header heat inside is now virtually non existent where before you would be a sweaty mess. I cant see this material molding at all but I cant say for certain |
Question: | Is this a one piece sized at 60x |
Answer: | One layer of Damplifier is usually plenty. Since there are two kinds of noise in a vehicle. The first is structure borne. This is what one layer of Damplifier stops. The second noise is air borne. In order to stop this noise a second layer of product is nessessary. This is a mass loaded vinyl. The product we sell is called Luxury Line Pro. This is available on Amazon. Good luck with your project! |
Question: | What is the maximum temperature this can withstand |
Answer: | The Damplifier will help with the lower frequency sounds. I believe our Luxury Liner Pro will give you a better result or for the type of noise coming from a refrigerator. Be sure to allow for air circulation for the best possible result use them both. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How thick is this deadener |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry, as for the show thickness of this item is 2mm and the long thickness is 10mm. If you have any other questions, please contact us. Have a great day! |
Question: | I should clarify-I want to use this on the ceiling of studio (not auto environment). Will it degrade or become brittle/dusty over time |
Answer: | I have no idea. I use it in my car as I previously responded. |
Question: | Will this work on the countertop and walls of a small recording booth |
Answer: | You can BUT I would be inclined to use the black foam squares often used for indoor room sound absorbtion. This is small amount of footage covered and not as durable as the squares. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this safe for indoor soundproofing use? Is the material toxic to pets who come into contact with it |
Answer: | I used the material on the inside of plywood boxes I made to deaden the sound of my generators when camping. Works great! The material is simply foam rubber with an adhesive backing and should work fine indoors. I doubt it would be toxic to pets unless they chewed on it and ingested it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need to use them on the ceiling in a VFW meeting hall, no space on the walls, will they be efective |
Answer: | I think it would be good for handling the kind of heat in an auto interior.I would not use it around car exhaust because the insulation material is neophrine. For high heat applications I would use something with a fiberglass or Nomex core. |
Question: | Can I put this under my washing machine to stop vivrations |
Answer: | You will have to measure your interior. I would assume it would take four. If you are trying to quiet your vehicle then you want a butyl sound deadening mat (at least 50 mil) and cover about 25% using smaller squares located strategically to keep body panels from vibrating. It is kind of heavy like peel and stick roofing material. Then insulate. |
Question: | Is there a preferred method to " cut " them - to fit in difficult spaces? ex: razor, exacto-knife, scissors |
Answer: | Yes. It comes as one piece. Make sure you don't plan on using it for voice isolation though. Works great for thermal insulation |
Question: | Is there a front or back? Which side should I stick to the wall |
Answer: | About 150°C. Thx! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a a2s panel fire rating submittal sheet |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I want to isolate the sound of the street that comes to my room is this product good for this or can you suggest me another one |
Answer: | I would use a different product, these are individual square foam tiles, you would need a large order for a room. I am using them to sound proof my drum room. It helps reduce the noise but, not totally sound proof. They have large 48x24 sheets of acoustic foam on Amazon, that would be economical, only you know how "quiet" you need it. |
Question: | Do make or sell in bulk because I would be interested in doing all 4 walls in my home theater room which is, 13ft×21ft×10ft tall? If not, any suggesti |
Answer: | We currently offer promotions related to the quantity with maximum 6% off for orders of 10 or more. However, if you want to order much more please let me know to check if it's possible for a higher discount. Question: | Will this get rid of outside loud fan noise from neighbors air conditioning unit sitting behind my bedroom wall and head |
Answer: | No. Acoustic foam is designed to 'absorb' sound, not 'block' it; Meaning it is made to reduce reflections, reverberations, echo, etc. Think of it like when you move into a new house or apartment with no furniture in it. As you make noise you clearly hear it echo throughout the room. As you fill the room with furniture and hang fixtures to the walls they reflect+absorb sound waves reducing the clear echo you previously heard from when sound-waves were simply bouncing around on the blank walls. This is also clearly noticeable when comparing a carpeted room to a hard-floor room. The seller states these "2-inch foam tiles provide 80-90% noise reduction" which would mean that they have an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) of between .80 and .90 but this also means they weren't actually tested or may perhaps have a lower rating, otherwise it would have a specific NRC rating and not a percent-range. If you would like to help reduce sound through walls then you may be interested in something like 'QuietRock' Sheetrock with the highest STC (sound transmission class) rating you can get. There are also other options but foam will effectively do nothing to reduce the sound being passed through the walls. Sound booths have the structural material that actually prevent transmission through the walls and then use the foam on the interior to reduce the reflection inside. Acoustic Foam is created to reduce the reflection of sound, NOT the transmission of sound. *I realize this is an old question but I hope it may help someone in the future that has this question* |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many sheets come with the 36sq kit? I do see they are 20x |
Answer: | Not only that it has SSD mounts but it is really easy to use them. They slide in and out of the case and can be locked into place. You simply slide the mount out of the case, install the SSD, then slide the mount back in and lock it. This is a really nice case. |
Question: | How effective is this to reduce vibrations |
Answer: | the case is deeper than it is tall. |
Question: | Will this product help with the high pitched noise from tires on the highway |
Answer: | No but you can purchse a 2.5'' media card reader front panel adapter for ~$25 which will fit and works just as well. |
Question: | I have a portable air conditioner that is really loud. If i wrap the unit with this will it quiet down |
Answer: | It should, especially if you do not mount a side fan. The case has a particularly wide clearance because its side panels flare out. It probably has more clearance than most.I installed a Hyper 212 EVO in one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work attached to a curtain room divider |
Answer: | Probably. Do a Google search (not an amazon search). |
Question: | Can these be cut to a smaller size easily |
Answer: | The "chalky" residue is nothing more than a result of the manufacturing process. Just you a damp rag and you should be able to clean it fine. However, given the lack of texture of the surface of MLV, you may not able to get tape to stick or stay stuck for long. I would question why you need to apply tape in the first place. |
Question: | I need to sound proof the outside of a kitty carrier for a plane ride. Is this product a little bendy |
Answer: | I guess you could but I would put it under the carpet. |
Question: | Is that resist the noise from outside |
Answer: | The windows are generally the weakest link. So I would say the windows are really what you need to cover. A window covered in MLV should rate about as well as the wall, which should be enough to keep the sound down to a level where you're comfortable. There are a lot of variables though, like the frequency and decibel level of the noise you are hearing, as well as the distance of that noise and the height in relation to where the noise is generated and the windows in question. |
