3 best sound deadening boards

Sound deadening boards, also known as acoustic panels or sound-absorbing panels, are essential components in acoustical treatments used to improve the sound quality in various environments, including recording studios, home theaters, offices, and more. They play a crucial role in reducing unwanted noise, echoes, and reverberations by absorbing sound energy.

Here are some key points about sound deadening boards:

  1. Sound Absorption: Sound deadening boards are designed to absorb sound waves rather than reflect them. This absorption helps to reduce acoustic issues like echoes, reverberations, and unwanted background noise, resulting in a quieter and more controlled acoustic environment.

  2. Materials: These boards are typically made from specialized acoustical materials such as fiberglass, foam, mineral wool, or acoustic fabric wrapped around a rigid core. The choice of material depends on the specific acoustic requirements and aesthetic preferences.

  3. Installation: Sound deadening boards can be installed on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces using various methods. They can be directly mounted with adhesives, suspended from the ceiling, or placed on stands or wall brackets. Proper placement is crucial to target problem areas effectively.

  4. Purpose: Sound deadening boards serve multiple purposes, including:

    • Recording Studios: They help create an acoustically controlled environment for capturing clean audio recordings by reducing reflections and external noise.
    • Home Theaters: They enhance the listening experience by minimizing echoes and enhancing audio clarity, making movies and music more immersive.
    • Office Spaces: In open office layouts, sound deadening boards can improve speech intelligibility and reduce distractions.
    • Industrial Settings: They are used in industrial spaces to mitigate noise pollution and protect workers' hearing.
  5. Design and Aesthetics: Sound deadening boards are available in various shapes, sizes, and designs, allowing for customization to suit the aesthetic and acoustic requirements of the space. They can be plain or feature decorative fabric coverings to blend seamlessly with the room's decor.

  6. Acoustic Performance: The effectiveness of sound deadening boards is measured in terms of their Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) or Sound Absorption Coefficient (αw). Higher NRC values indicate better sound absorption performance.

  7. Combination with Other Treatments: In many cases, sound deadening boards are used in conjunction with other acoustic treatments, such as bass traps, diffusers, and soundproofing materials, to create a well-balanced acoustic environment.

  8. DIY vs. Professional Installation: While some individuals may choose to install sound deadening boards themselves, achieving optimal acoustic results often requires professional assessment and installation to ensure proper placement and coverage.

In conclusion, sound deadening boards are crucial components in acoustical treatments used to improve sound quality and control in various settings. They are versatile, customizable, and effective tools for creating acoustic environments that meet specific needs, whether it's in a recording studio, home theater, office, or other spaces where sound quality and comfort are priorities.

ATS Acoustic Panel 24x48x2 Inches, Beveled Edge, in Ivory

Based on 392 reviews Check latest price

Product description

ATS Acoustic panels provide the simple yet important function of absorbing sound. You can think of them like acoustical black holes - sound goes in and doesn't come back out. This panel is 24x48x2 inches. Cover fabric is an attractively textured, 100% jute. Wall-mounting hardware and instructions are included. All acoustic panels are rated with an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) between 0 and 1. This rating indicates how much of the sound the strikes the panel is absorbed. ATS Acoustic Panels in 2-inch thickness are rated 1.0 out of 1. Superior sound absorption means fewer panels are required to effectively treat your space. In a recording studio or mixing room, ATS Acoustic Panels reduce reflections from the room's hard surfaces. This keeps the sound clear, and free from excessive reverb. This is especially important when recording speech or vocals. Acoustic panels in your home theater ensure you and your audience will fully experience the great sound your system is capable of. Many houses of worship and other auditoriums across the country have solved their sound problems on a very reasonable budget by installing ATS Acoustic Panels.

User questions & answers

Question: I am trying to reduce sound and echo in a cafeteria area. The dimensions are approximately 40x80 feet. How many of these tiles do you think I need
Answer: These panels appear to be quite effective in the small home recording studio I have. For a large area, some might argue the simple answer is the more the better. I think the main aim in your situation is to significantly cut the way sound waves bounce around a room, rather than achieving a more complete sound absorption desirable in a recording studio. I would aim to place the panels vertically about midway up each wall, leaving a space of perhaps no more than six feet between each. It's important to ensure that panels on opposing walls are not directly opposite each other. That way, a blank space on one wall should have a panel directly opposite it on the wall facing it, and visa versa. You are aiming to minimise sound waves bouncing between two hard surfaces. So, for example. you might have 10 panels on each long wall, staggered so as not to face each other, and maybe five or six on each shorter wall, again staggered so as to face a blank wall space on the opposite wall. If you have the budget and the room height, suspending some panels from the ceiling with a few inches gap between them and the ceiling should add considerably to the effect. Hope that helps
Question: can this be effective in blocking generator noise? what dBL reduction can be expected? building a generator box
Answer: Absolutely do not buy this for that, just pick up the heavy grade sound absorb material, just literally type in "sound absorbing material" in search box above and you will get a load of choices. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sound+absorbing+material&sprefix=sound+absorbing+material%2Caps%2C151
Question: How many panels come in this order.. Is it 4 like reflected on the picture or is it only one panel
Answer: You get only 1 panel. They are just showing you the different colors they come in. The panels are somewhat expensive but I feel they are well worth it. They are also easy to hang on the wall.
Question: To have an idea of what to expect, will this block someone in the next room with thin walls from hearing conversations in an office env
Answer: For that to happen is quite costly and would require construction! You see sound moves in a wave, like water! Wherever there is space, sound will go there to get out! So....think the air vents, door frames, windows, and air gaps in the celular structure of the wall! Not only that though, sound vibrates things, and those things then re-produce that sound through vibration as well! So to kill sound you need mass! First thing you do is grab some MLV-mass loaded vinyl and cover your wall that you don't want people listening to you through! Then after doing that cover the MLV on the wall with another layer of drywall! If you can leave a 1" airgap between the MLV and the new layer of drywall! Then do the same to the ceiling! Then get special air-vents, and seal them from sound! Then on the walls put these all over the wall's on the entire room! Not on every single square inch of space, just around the room from crotch to head height! And that should work! Oh and get a door that's super thick and made of real wood, and not hallow! The heavier the better, the thicker the better, the more mass the better! The more mass you have the more soundproof it is!

ADW Solid Acoustic Panels vs. Sound Foam Panels: Acoustic Design Works’ fabric-covered, solid acoustic wall panels offer a much higher Noise Reduction Control than foam panels for a big reason: ADW acoustic panels have a solid, scientifically-designed sound wave-absorbing core covered in high quality acoustic fabric. In contrast, simple wedge and pyramid foam paneling allows sound waves to pass through and bounce off of any wall they are installed on, which increases noise and echo. In a nutshell, ADW acoustical panels both work better and look better.
