13 best vocal processors

Vocal processors, also known as vocal effects processors or signal processors, are electronic devices used in the music and audio recording industry to manipulate and enhance the sound of a singer's voice. These devices are commonly used in studio recording, live performances, and even home recording setups to achieve various creative and technical effects on vocals.

Here are some key aspects and features of vocal processors:

  1. Effects and Processing: Vocal processors offer a wide range of effects and processing options to modify the sound of a singer's voice. Common effects include reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, pitch correction, distortion, and EQ (equalization). These effects can be applied in real-time during live performances or in post-production for studio recordings.

  2. Pitch Correction: Many vocal processors include pitch correction features, which can help singers achieve perfect pitch by automatically adjusting their vocal intonation. This is particularly useful for correcting minor pitch issues in live settings or for achieving a specific vocal effect.

  3. Harmony Generation: Some vocal processors can generate harmony vocals in real-time.This allows a single vocalist to create the illusion of multiple voices singing in harmony, enhancing the overall sound of a performance.

  4. Looping: Looping capabilities are often included in vocal processors, allowing singers to record and layer vocal loops on the fly. This can create complex vocal arrangements in a live setting or add depth to studio recordings.

  5. Presets and Customization: Vocal processors come with a range of preset settings for various vocal effects. Users can also customize these effects to create their unique sounds, adjusting parameters like reverb level, delay time, pitch shift, and more.

  6. MIDI Integration: Some vocal processors can be controlled via MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), allowing for synchronization with other MIDI-enabled equipment such as keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines.

  7. Live Performance: Vocal processors are commonly used by singers and vocalists during live performances to enhance their vocals and add creativity to their shows. They can be controlled via foot pedals or other external controllers for real-time adjustments.

  8. Recording Studio Use: In the recording studio, vocal processors are essential tools for producers and engineers to shape the sound of a vocalist. They help achieve the desired sonic characteristics and effects for a song.

  9. Connectivity: Vocal processors typically offer various input and output options, including XLR and 1/4" jacks for connecting microphones and other audio equipment. Some models also have USB connectivity for recording directly to a computer.

  10. Popular Brands: Several well-known brands produce high-quality vocal processors, including TC-Helicon, Boss, Digitech, Behringer, and Roland, among others.

In summary, vocal processors are versatile tools used in the music and audio industry to shape, enhance, and manipulate a singer's voice. They offer a wide range of effects and processing options, making them valuable for both live performances and studio recording applications.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with mic stand mount
Answer: No, there is no mount included.

Answer: The knob below the phantom power switch is a volume knob that controls the mic input volume.
Question: Can you hook this up to a goxlr, to potentially further enhance your voices
Answer: A second method is to connect the 1/4"(L) and 1/4"(R) Output (line outs) from the Zoom V3 with an intermediary, impedance matching device, such as a Whirlwind pcDI box or similar, thus convert the two line outs from the Zoom V3 into a pair of XLR outputs, one of which can be passed on to the XLR microphone input on the GoXLR. This second method can be used to connect a Zoom V3 to a Zoom P8.
Question: How long do the batteries usually last

Find Your Voice

The VT-4 is an effect processor for the instrument inside us all-the human voice. And like the human voice, the VT-4 is easy to use, yet devastatingly effective. Whether you’re a solo electronic artist, DJ, or singer in a band, the VT-4 lets you craft and shape your own unique vocal sounds, from subtle augmentation to radical transformation. Everything is hands on, with no menu diving or programming to get in the way. Jaw-dropping effects like harmonizing, vocoding, pitch shifting, hard tuning, and more are just a push, slide, or turn away. The VT-4’s combination of small size, simple controls, and USB-audio capabilities make it uniquely suited to altering your voice for YouTube broadcasts, game streaming, podcasting, and more. And with its compact size and five-hour battery life, you can use the VT-4 anywhere.

Insanely Creative

Today’s musical styles increasingly use unusual vocal sounds with heavy processing, making them stand out and grab the listener’s attention. With the VT-4, you have a wealth of modern and retro vocal effects at your fingertips, with no need to resort to a complicated setup with a computer and plug-ins. All the effects are top-notch, with everything from delay and reverb to mind-bending formant and vocoding effects. Better still, the VT-4’s performance-oriented interface lets you ride the controls while you sing to constantly alter the sound to suit the track and enhance the vibe of your performance.

Be Who You Want to Be

Great-sounding pitch and formant effects are hard to come by, especially without a computer. And real-time tweaking of these effects often results in nasty artifacts and other unpleasantness. With the VT-4 you have totally smooth, instant control over both pitch and formant, with dedicated faders for each. Changing presets and tweaking controls is smooth and immediate, with no jarring artifacts, glitches, or dropouts. Take on the persona of different characters in diverse locations, or sound larger than life when taunting your foes. Add humor, danger, wit, and variety to your streaming broadcasts-your imagination is your only limitation.

Transformative Effects

Achieving complex vocal effects is easy with the VT-4, and you can even use multiple effects at the same time. Use the central Auto-Pitch knob to dial in just the right amount of hard-tuned effect, then press the Megaphone button for some lo-fi raunchiness. Or run the vocoder through a tape delay or vintage chorus. Each effect has a selection of one-touch variations, so you can get different vocoder characteristics, various lo-fi effects, multi-part harmonies, and distinct kinds of reverb and delay. Chain your effects, set the controls just how you like them, and then simply hold down a preset button to save that setup for later.

MIDI Control

The VT-4 works great on its own and can harmonize and vocode without any input other than your voice. But plugging a MIDI keyboard into the VT-4 opens even more expressive possibilities, letting you control the Auto-Pitch, harmony, and vocoder engines in real time with the notes you play. You can hard-tune your voice to specific notes as you sing, or create instant multi-part harmonies with voicings that follow your chords. The VT-4’s small footprint sits nicely on most keyboards and is easy to integrate into your setup, dishing out huge backing vocals and funky vocoded leads by the bucketload.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the large black rectangle in photos a Foot Switch
Answer: Yes. That turns the effects or off
Question: I have a boss acoustic preamp with 2 outputs. Can I send one to this pedal and one to my mixer or does the instrument have to pass through
Answer: Sorry for the late reply! You can definitely send the pre-amp signal to this pedal; I use a Fishman Model G (old school) pre-amp coming out of my Ibanez acoustic. I gig regularly and don't have a great voice but do backing vocals for my wife. This definitely adds a lot of color to my harmonies and it also pitch corrects. A bit of advice: go for the extra power adapter which does NOT come with the pedal. This thing will eat batteries like you wouldn't believe and if you forget to shut it off, they're toast! Get the DC adapter and never worry about it!
Question: if you don't plug in a guitar, how do you differentiate between minor / major harmonies
Answer: All you need is the Major keys. Use your music theory to determine the relative minor/major relationship. ie: Am is also C Maj, Em is also G Maj etc.
Question: Unit supplies +48v to mic and output goes to mixer. mixer also supplies +48v to all mic input. will there be a conflict and damage mixer and ve
Answer: I've never used mine with phantom power but if you intend on doing so I would suggest allowing the VE-2 to supply the power to your condensor mic and then run the XLR output of the VE-2 to a regular mic input on your PA.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I play both a 6 string and 12 string together with a friend or by looping one and then swiching to other with a 1/4" Y connector plugged in both
Answer: Yes, you can build a switch station and direct guitars I use three.
Question: Is the looper easier to work than a Ditto, which you have to press twice to stop and keep playing and singing
Answer: A little. The looper on the VoiceLive is probably the easiest.
Question: Hello, it could be send to Mexico
Answer: Paul Morgan is right, but he didn't need to be a d**k about it.
Question: Is all I need to hook up the guitar is a cable with xlr on one end and 1/4" on the other
Answer: The input is a standard 1/4", however, the outputs are XLR only. That's one of the downsides of this unit. If you need a 1/4" output, you can use a line leveling transformer/adapter. That's what I used when I was still gigging with this.

User questions & answers

Question: How will this help a person who raps and doesnt sing
Answer: It is dominantly for tuning sung notes, so my impression would be not that much. However, if you sing a FEW notes while rapping, you can get that mechanized sound as you change pitch if you set it for aggressive tuning. In addition, as a vocal processor there are some fun effects to play with.
Question: I have a zoom r16 recording machine...can I plug this into my zoom and use it that way? Will I hear the vocals in my head phones like plugging in a no
Answer: This machine has a line output, you need a tr 44 connection. Which basically is a really big headphones jack. That plugs into your mixer. Then it goes to your DAW. If you have the setting in your DAW to hear yourself life then all is good
Question: Hello everyone, I have 2 tascam ta-1vp, but as soon as I activate the auto-tune function has the speed of correction to 0, my voice crackling
Answer: The speed correction is not universal. Each program has to be saved with its own speed correction.
Question: Can this be used for the studio
Answer: Yes this unit works best in a studio environment.

There are a lot of different tools for other instrumentalists, but there’s nothing like the VT-12 because this is particularly for singers, and I think it’s an indispensible tool for vocal training for teachers and students alike.” — Anne Peckham (Chair, Voice Department, Berklee College of Music)

User questions & answers

Question: Could you also use this to record song ideas
Answer: Yes you can. But there are other devices best suited for this. Any smartphone will do it better.
Question: I received my order and the entire package and manual is in chinese. i didn't see anything about that when i ordered it. what can i do
Answer: I bought the Roland several years ago, and posted a WARNING on this site that the entire package and manual is in Chinese. Guess they're still doing that. The best you can do is go to their website and look for the ENGLISH manual -- it's there somewhere, but I don't have the links right now. Unfortunately the Berklee book is not included there, and even the English manual isn't great, but it's better than having to go take Mandarin Chinese lessons. I agree they should mention this when you buy it, but they don't. Good luck! I ended up not using it much because it was too hard to figure out.
Question: Is it true the directions are all in japanese
Answer: yes,it is japanese.
Question: Is the main problem the sound level? I see that repeatedly
Answer: Get a good set of headphones or earbuds and the low sound level will disappear. This is a great device.

The Ultimate Pocket Vocal Coach

From music school to home, from recording studio to backstage dressing room, the pocket-sized VT-12 is your ultimate traveling vocal coach. With a variety of built-in exercises and warm-ups for improving your vocal skills, the VT-12 provides real-time analysis of your pitch while you sing so you can visualize your progress. The illuminated pitch meter displays your pitch, and can even detect two singers simultaneously for two-part harmony training in equal temperament and just intonation. The VT-12 also has onboard vocal guides and backing tracks based on the bundled book from Berklee Press (the publishing division of Berklee College of Music), plus 50 etudes from the world-standard Concone classical vocal lessons.

Visualize Your Pitch

As you sing, the VT-12 tracks your pitch and displays it in real time in half-step increments with an easy-to-see illuminated pitch meter that responds quickly and accurately. The meter brightens as you approach the correct pitch and darkens as you move further away. If the guide tone is being played, the note name of the guide tone is displayed. You can play the guide tone (over a range of 24 semitones) with a button to listen to the correct pitch. In addition to personal practice, this is also a great tool for vocal teachers to show their students when they’re singing the correct pitch.

Harmony Check

You don’t have to use the VT-12 alone! You can practice with a teacher or a fellow singer, and the VT-12 will detect the two voices simultaneously and display the note names. There are three pitch-detection modes onboard: Mono Equal (one voice detected using equal temperament); Chord Equal (two voices detected using equal temperament); and Chord Just (two voices detected using just intonation/major). Choir members or a cappella groups can use the VT-12 to visually check if their harmonies are correct.

Tempo Check

For singers, pitch is essential, but timing is equally important. The VT-12’s built-in metronome is a great tool for building timing skills, and it’s easy to use — just select a tempo manually or in real time with the tap tempo feature. During vocal lessons, the teacher can ask students to clap the upbeat or other rhythm patterns along with the metronome to build their time sense. The tuner feature works at the same time, so you can practice singing the correct pitch while following the metronome.

Self Evaluation

When you play the onboard warm-ups and songs, the VT-12 automatically records your voice — just sing and review. To listen back, simply press the Review button. You can also use the Review feature in conjunction with the metronome to check your timing. The on-board audio warm-ups include slides, descending fifth runs, and others. There are also built-in practice songs with guide vocals and backing tracks in a variety of genres. For the warm-ups and basic-level exercises, the VT-12 displays the pitch of the guide vocal and the pitch you’re singing at the same time.

User questions & answers

Question: how is the telephone effect on this beast
Answer: I personally don't like this pedal. I don't know if it was my pedal or if the model is faulted but the gain knob didn't work so I wouldn't be able to tell you
Question: are all the pedal for sale like this now equipped with the gate control, everyone is compelling about feedback
Answer: The feedback issue is terrible. Worse, when you save your settings, it will randomly lose those settings. If you use this in a live setting, you'll drive your soundman crazy. Completely unusable pedal.
Question: Does this pedal include Power supply
Answer: Yes!
