14 best vocal harmony processors
Vocal harmony processors are a type of audio equipment used by musicians and singers to add harmonies and effects to their vocals in real-time during live performances or in the studio. These processors are designed to enhance the overall sound of a vocalist by generating additional harmonized voices or altering the original voice's characteristics. Here are some key points about vocal harmony processors:
Harmonization: Vocal harmony processors can create harmonies by generating additional voices to sing along with the lead vocalist. These harmonies can be set to various intervals, such as thirds, fifths, or octaves, creating a rich and layered vocal sound.
Pitch Correction: Many vocal harmony processors include pitch correction capabilities, which help in tuning the singer's voice to the desired pitch. This can be especially useful in live performances to maintain a consistent and in-tune vocal performance.
Effects Processing: In addition to harmonization and pitch correction, these processors often include a range of effects, such as reverb, delay, modulation, and more. These effects can be applied to the vocals to add depth, texture, and character to the sound.
Control Options: Vocal harmony processors typically come with user-friendly interfaces that allow musicians to control the harmonies, effects, and pitch correction in real-time. This can be done via footswitches or on-screen controls.
Adaptive Processing: Some advanced vocal harmony processors use adaptive technology to analyze the incoming audio and adjust the harmonies and effects in real-time, providing a more natural and responsive vocal performance.
Live Performance: These processors are commonly used by solo artists, duos, and bands during live performances to create the illusion of additional vocalists or to replicate complex vocal arrangements.
Studio Recording: In the recording studio, vocal harmony processors are used to create multi-layered vocal tracks and experiment with different vocal textures and effects. They offer flexibility and creativity in the recording process.
Compatibility: Vocal harmony processors can be integrated into larger audio setups, including mixing consoles, digital audio workstations (DAWs), and other studio recording equipment. They often come with various input and output options to facilitate this integration.
Brands and Models: Various manufacturers produce vocal harmony processors, and some popular brands in this category include TC-Helicon, Boss, Digitech, and Roland, among others.
Price Range: The price of vocal harmony processors varies widely, with basic models being relatively affordable and more feature-rich models at a higher cost.
Overall, vocal harmony processors are valuable tools for musicians and singers looking to enhance their vocal performances, both in a live setting and in the recording studio. They provide a wide range of creative possibilities for vocalists to explore and experiment with different harmonies and effects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i also use this with my keyboard? i do play piano, not guitar. could i use this |
Answer: | I've used the BOSS VE-20 Vocal Processor with an Aerophone AE10, a wind-controlled, digital synth instrument, using a simple 1/4 in. cable connection, all effects coming through with no issues. If that combo works with the (junior) VE20, then I'm assuming it would also work with this item. |
Question: | What voltage(s) does this support |
Answer: | It uses a 9VDC 0.5 A supply. However Boss states that you should use their Boss PSA power supply. |
Question: | Can i output 1 xlr cable, or do i have to output 2 into a mixer |
Answer: | You can use just one XLR cable to the mixer, just make sure that you have the effects set to mono or you'll lose part of the output signal. |
Question: | In the manual on page 18 it says "view the 'parameter guide' and 'midi implementation chart' (pdf)" - where is the 'midi implementation chart' pdf |
Answer: | Follow this link if your unit did not come with the Parameter Guide... https://www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/ve-500/owners_manuals/5f989991-295b-4dbc-8b60-3bf0eaa91adc/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the large black rectangle in photos a Foot Switch |
Answer: | Yes. That turns the effects or off |
Question: | I have a boss acoustic preamp with 2 outputs. Can I send one to this pedal and one to my mixer or does the instrument have to pass through |
Answer: | Sorry for the late reply! You can definitely send the pre-amp signal to this pedal; I use a Fishman Model G (old school) pre-amp coming out of my Ibanez acoustic. I gig regularly and don't have a great voice but do backing vocals for my wife. This definitely adds a lot of color to my harmonies and it also pitch corrects. A bit of advice: go for the extra power adapter which does NOT come with the pedal. This thing will eat batteries like you wouldn't believe and if you forget to shut it off, they're toast! Get the DC adapter and never worry about it! |
Question: | if you don't plug in a guitar, how do you differentiate between minor / major harmonies |
Answer: | All you need is the Major keys. Use your music theory to determine the relative minor/major relationship. ie: Am is also C Maj, Em is also G Maj etc. |
Question: | Unit supplies +48v to mic and output goes to mixer. mixer also supplies +48v to all mic input. will there be a conflict and damage mixer and ve |
Answer: | I've never used mine with phantom power but if you intend on doing so I would suggest allowing the VE-2 to supply the power to your condensor mic and then run the XLR output of the VE-2 to a regular mic input on your PA. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect a keyboard or a different audio source other than a guitar |
Answer: | Yes there is a 1/4 input and an aux input and then the XLR input for the mic |
Question: | Can you use it for saxophone |
Answer: | Yes, If you play your sax into a microphone. |
Question: | Can you use a bass guitar with it? Or does it have to be an acoustic guitar |
Answer: | It needs to have harmonic structure in order to devise harmonies for the vocal input. Bass only plays root or generally one note at a time which is not harmony. So unless you are Victor Wooten, probably not going to work. |
Question: | Doing sound for a play and need to change someone's voice to sound like a chipmunk in the middle of the show very quickly - can this make it happen |
Answer: | use garageband app on iphone or ipad. |

Question: | Can this be used with the saxophone |

Question: | How long do the batteries last on the Boss VE-2 vocal harminzer |
Answer: | The Harmonizer harmonizes in specific keys or with the key of the guitar. Most likely if a singer is out of tune with the music it will not sound right. There are other pedals which are designed to help correct singer tones. You should look at those for your situation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do sound effects work the same with with a wireless mic plugged in auxiliary |
Answer: | I use for voice only, however if using a microphone I would not see why it would work any different than voice. |
Question: | Maybe a stupid question, but I see that the acoustic play only works with an acoustic guitar. Will this work with an electric guitar |
Answer: | There are effects that sound like autotune, but I am unsure whether the voice or an out-of-tune voice can be corrected. From the manufacturer it says, "The VoiceLive Play offers powerful vocal processing with simple footpedal control. ... de-essing and equalisation; pitch processing in the form of correction, doubling and hard tuning (think Kanye West-style Auto-Tune); and conventional effects such as reverb, flanger, delay, chorus, rotary speaker, distortion and so on". I love mine! It is AWESOME to play with. |
Question: | Can I play my wooden flute thru a mic plugged into this and have most of the effects work right, voices from wind instruments count as acoustics |
Answer: | I no longer own one of these, but it does include a pitch correction algorithm. As I recall, the effect is subtle. It will help if you are already pretty close to pitch and just need some fine-tuning. |
Question: | Does this product have autotune |
Answer: | I use this with my trombone, and am very pleased with the results. However, the reason it works well for me is that the trombone is in a similar enough frequency to the human voice, and sax might be a little too high. I would definitely recommend you find a local music store that stocks this, and try it before you buy it. Take a friend with you - you're going to want someone who can stand far enough away from the mic to really hear the sound coming from the speaker. You might also want to consider the next model up - it has a significant number of extra features for not a whole lot more money. Expect the same results, however, for quality of sound. |
