14 best multitrack recorders

Multitrack recorders are essential pieces of equipment used in music production and recording studios. They allow musicians, producers, and audio engineers to capture and manipulate multiple audio sources or tracks separately, enabling the creation of complex and polished recordings. Here's what you need to know about multitrack recorders:

  1. Functionality:

    • Multitrack recorders are devices that record and playback multiple audio tracks simultaneously.
    • They are used for capturing individual sound sources, such as vocals, instruments, and drums, on separate tracks to provide control during mixing and editing.
  2. Analog vs. Digital:

    • Traditionally, multitrack recorders were analog devices that used magnetic tape to record audio.Modern options are primarily digital, using hard drives or memory cards to store audio files.
    • Analog multitrack recorders are still used in some professional studios for their unique warmth and sound characteristics, but digital options offer more convenience and flexibility.
  3. Track Count:

    • Multitrack recorders come in various configurations, offering a range of track counts. Common options include 8, 16, 24, 32, or more tracks.
    • The number of tracks determines how many simultaneous recordings can be made, which is important for projects with many instruments or vocal parts.
  4. Recording Quality:

    • Digital multitrack recorders often support various audio formats and quality settings (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz) to accommodate different recording needs.
    • Higher bit depths and sample rates provide better audio quality but also require more storage space.
  5. Built-in Effects and Processing:

    • Some digital multitrack recorders offer built-in effects, EQ (equalization), and processing capabilities, allowing for creative sound shaping during recording or mixing.
  6. Portability and Integration:

    • Portable digital multitrack recorders are available, designed for on-the-go recording and live performances.
    • Many modern multitrack recorders integrate with computer-based recording software, allowing for seamless transfer of recorded tracks for further editing and mixing.
  7. Inputs and Outputs:

    • Multitrack recorders have a variety of inputs and outputs, including XLR and 1/4-inch jacks for connecting microphones, instruments, and external audio sources.
    • Some models also have MIDI inputs for controlling MIDI devices.
  8. Control Surface:

    • Larger multitrack recorders may include a control surface with faders, knobs, and a display screen for hands-on mixing and editing.
  9. Storage and Backup:

    • Digital multitrack recorders use various storage media such as hard drives, SSDs, SD cards, or USB drives. Backup solutions are essential to prevent data loss.
  10. Budget and Features:

    • The cost of multitrack recorders varies significantly depending on the brand, track count, features, and recording quality. Consider your recording needs and budget when selecting a model.

In summary, multitrack recorders are fundamental tools in modern music production, enabling the recording and manipulation of multiple audio sources. They come in various configurations and offer a range of features to suit the needs of musicians and audio engineers in both studio and live settings.

User questions & answers

Question: I like to record from my portable PA (JBL EON210P) w/ RCA & 1/4" output. Is this a good recorder or is there other better options
Answer: The DP006 is an entry level 4-6 track recorder. It's not a professional board, but it does what it claims to do very well.
Question: can you record a live performace
Answer: Absolutely! However your results will depend on the placement of the device. You could record a live performance using either the internal mic or using external mics strategically located. This little unit is pretty diverse in it's application. Results depend on your recording acumen. Which develop over time.
Question: Can you transfer your recording to a thumb drive
Answer: You record individual tracks that are then mixed down by you into a stereo mp3 with this same unit. From there, you can do anything with the mp3 file - put it on a thumb drive, email it, upload it, etc. If you are asking "can you go directly to thumb drive?", I don't think there is an easy way. It has an SD card that you can take out and put in any card reader, then you would be able to transfer onto a thumb drive.
Question: does this need external speakers or are they built in? also what would be a good micraphone to use for i need one further away from the unit
Answer: It does need some sort of device to output sound. It is equipped for headphones. You can use any mic you like as well as a condenser if you have phantom power capabilities. The onboard mics are good quality as well.

User questions & answers

Question: This may be a dumb question but can I record a track, then play it back while recording another track
Answer: Definitely! 16 times/tracks. You can also do 2 tracks simultaneously, and if you have software on your computer, you can send two simultaneous tracks realtime into the software.
Question: Can I make one recording of my band playing several songs in a set, then mix down each song individually for tracks on a CD
Answer: I do not have personal experience with this, however I found a forum post from the Zoom forums that might help you:http://zoomforum.us/viewtopic.php?t=19366Basically the gist is that no, this is not directly possible. But, you can copy the entire recording several times into new projects then trim them to just the portion you want.
Question: Can you record dry (without fx) while monitoring with fx. Such as record guitar dry, while monitoring with an internal Zoom overdrive and reverb
Answer: Yes you can set the effects for monitoring only. I use it for vocals.
Question: Could I link an R16 to an R
Answer: Yes, works well. I am a drummer and use an R24 linked to an R 16. There are a few thing that you will have to work around. Over all it works well

User questions & answers

Question: Do you have to record through the built in recorder or can you use a daw on your pc too
Answer: Not sure how to but you can, that's made to record instrumentals and also vocals, I didn't need it because I make my instrumentals with a software so went with protools for vocals.
Question: Does this come with a power supply and SD card, or do I need to buy them separately? I don't see anything about that in the description
Answer: Yes on the power supply and sd card but you might want to buy a bigger sd card if your planning on recording alot.
Question: other than the obvious extra tracks, is this relatively the same as the Tascam 24 track
Answer: There are two versions of this unit, the DP-24SD and the DP-32. The DP-24 has 12 mono channels and 6 "Fixed"stereo channels. The DP-32 has 8 mono channels and 10 stereo or mono channels. You can only record 8 tracks at once so either 8/mono or 4/stereo (each stereo channel counts as 2 tracks) or any combination not to exceed 8 tracks. The processing and Physical layout are the same pretty much the same.
Question: The dp 32sd says you can record 8 inputs at one time. the comments here say you can only record 2 inputs at one time. which is correct
Answer: Look at which version they are reviewing. This Amazon listing allows buyers to choose one of three different recorders...one being the 8 track which only allows 2 inputs. The customer reviews below include the combined comments for purchases of all three versions... so you are obviously reading comments directed towards the 8 track version. The 32 track recorder does in fact allow eight inputs with simultaneous recording.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the L12 work with Cubase 10 recording on a 21 inch Mac
Answer: This is a sound interface. All you need is sound drivers. There is no supplemental software.
Question: Can the L-12 record a live stereo mix, or only multitrack
Answer: What you can't do is record the next track at 24-bit/96kHz. That is you can record up to 12 tracks all at once at 24-bit/96kHz but then if you wanted to add another track to it while monitoring the first recording it has to be at 46kHz which is sub CD quality.
Question: Can I save EQ’s and recall them from the save if they have been changed
Answer: Yes! The EQ settings will be saved to your scene.
Question: Are the faders motorized
Answer: No the faders are not motorized. When you switch between fader modes and scenes, LEDs indicate what the fader settings were last set on in the mode/scene you switch to. You move the fader manually to the lit setting if you want it there or want to change it.

Product features

Tascam DR-40X

Versatile four-track audio recorder for cinema, music, podcasting and any other application. Easy-to-use compact design with a high-performance feature set and versatile audio I/O, all to produce professional content.

DR-40X Features:

Professional Deal for live capture: line level input

Dual Neutrik XLR/TRS combo jacks support both mic-level and +4dBu line-level. These inputs can accept balanced microphone or line level from Mixers or the FOH console. The microphone preamp includes +48V phantom power and plenty of gain for detailed recordings with condenser microphones, as well as electret type microphones. Using the stereo built-in microphones, you can capture ambient sound of the audience while recording direct from an external console, which is ideal for capturing live performances.

Wide covering range: from whispering voice to jet engine

DR-40X allows high-quality recording with its stereo built-in condenser microphones. Every detail is captured from small whispers to loud sounds up to 125dB SPL. These built-in microphones are adjustable unidirectional microphones for recording in an X-Y pattern for tight stereo imaging, or in an A-B pattern for a more ambient recording.

Simple operation

The layout of the DR-40X has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button press away.

Turning your room into a studio – in a minute.

Connecting to a PC using USB Audio interface mode, and DR-40X becomes a tool for voiceover work, live streaming and songwriting with studio-quality audio. Built-in microphones work as USB microphones.

Extended battery life

DR-07X uses only two AA batteries and has ultra-long battery capability. When using built-in microphones, recording lasts 17.5 hours when recording with standard 2ch WAV, 44.1kHz/ 16bit format using alkaline batteries. Also DR-07X can be powered by a USB mobile battery as well for super long extended use.

No need to go through 'take 2' all over again

If you don’t like the last part of a phrase you just recorded with your guitar, or if you change your mind and want to rephrase narration, the 'Overwrite mode' is exactly what you need. Overwrite mode allows punch-in recording from a desired point. It is destructive editing with one level of undo.

Nondestructive Overdubbing

The overdubbing function allows for Overdub Recording while playing a previously recorded file. This allows you to record other parts such as a guitar solo over a recording previously made such as at a rehearsal studio. Overdubbing creates a new file, leaving the original file unaffected, making it easy to re-record.

192 Hours

This is how long you can record CD-quality sound with single SDXC card. DR-40X support a SDXC card, which can record longer with larger data capacity. If you record one stereo file in 44.1kHz/ 16bit CD quality, 128GB card holds 192 hours maximum. In MP3/ 320kbps, it can record up to 896 hours. (that is 37 days!).

User questions & answers

Question: I am a new podcaster. Would someone be kind enough to explain how I would use this to interview someone over the telephone? Would skype be involved?th
Answer: Yes, you will want to use a software like Skype or Google Voice. You can connect the headphone output of your computer to one of the H5 inputs.
Question: If this unit is powered off and a USB cable is connected to a computer does it automatically turn on or will it stay off
Answer: It will automatically turn on with the option to select its use as an interface or storage device...hope this helps.
Question: Is the battery life significantly improved over the H4N? I like my H4N, but it's terrrible on phantom power for battery life
Answer: I can't compare it to the H4n. I got about 8-10 hours on the h5 using alkalines and phantom being on for nearly all of that time. It gives very little warning when the batteries are about to go.
Question: Judging from the pictures it looks to be made of plastic. Is this fragile or robust
Answer: It does not have a plastic feel. If you have ever held an H4n than this will feel somewhat the same. The H5 has a slim, but sturdy feel. It's not the kind of item that would break easily. The thing with the H5 is that it is so cool looking that you're always worrying about getting a single scratch on it. Fortunately, the rubber like exterior seems to handle scratches pretty well. Highly recommend that you get a screen protector as soon as you take it out of the box. I've held both the H5 and H6 and while the H6 feels slightly heavier and more professional with all the knobs, nice looking finish and a great color screen. The H5 feels lighter, has great build quality and you are more likely to use it because it light enough to mount on a rig or carry around... Without the fear of it breaking. I've bumped it on a few corners with my rig and it has held up pretty well. The only thing that feels like plastic are the adapters, but that applies to both the H5 and H6.Hope that helps.

User questions & answers

Question: can we connect video camera to it to get audio directly for live video recordings
Answer: I have only tried connecting iPhone and iPad to it to get synchronized video recordings. It's a class compliant USB audio device. In the system menu, there's a USB Audio setting. If set to Mix, then any connected device sees it as a two-in, two-out interface. If your camera supports USB audio, you can use this. The Model 12 also has two aux channels and a sub-mix bus, if you need to connect audio directly via 1/4" cables while also using the main outs for speakers.
Question: can you control the level of the on board effects individually on each channel
Answer: Yes, that is controlled at the track level by the Aux 1 or Aux 2 knob. The master is controlled at the effects send. One of the Aux controls level of the internal effects, the other for external when connected.
Question: Can I use this with ipad
Answer: You can send via Bluetooth to channels 9/10
Question: does the unit record in wav files
Answer: It records in BWF WAV, which is Broadcast Wave File. This is a subset of WAVE files that include extra information like timestamps. They can be used just about everywhere a normal WAV file is used.
