9 best scarlett preamp
A Scarlett preamp typically refers to the preamplifiers included in Focusrite's Scarlett series of audio interfaces. These preamps are an integral part of the audio interface and are designed to provide high-quality, low-noise microphone and instrument amplification for recording purposes. Here's what you need to know about Scarlett preamps:
Focusrite Scarlett Series: Focusrite is a well-known brand in the audio industry, and their Scarlett series of audio interfaces are popular among musicians, producers, and audio engineers. These interfaces come in various models, such as the Scarlett Solo, Scarlett 2i2, Scarlett 4i4, and more, each offering a different number of inputs and features.
High-Quality Preamps: Scarlett audio interfaces are praised for their high-quality preamps. These preamps are known for their transparent and clean sound, making them suitable for a wide range of recording applications, including vocals, acoustic instruments, electric guitars, and more.
Low Noise: Focusrite has a reputation for designing preamps with low noise levels, which means they introduce minimal unwanted background noise into your recordings. This is crucial for achieving professional-quality audio recordings.
Phantom Power: Many Scarlett models provide phantom power, which is necessary for condenser microphones and certain other studio equipment that require external power to operate.
Instrument Inputs: Some Scarlett models feature instrument inputs with high impedance, making them suitable for directly connecting electric guitars and basses without the need for a separate DI (Direct Injection) box.
Gain Control: Scarlett preamps typically include gain control knobs, allowing you to adjust the input levels to suit your specific recording needs. This is important for avoiding clipping (distortion) and optimizing signal-to-noise ratios.
Red Halo LED: Scarlett preamps often include a unique "Red Halo" LED that indicates when the input signal is clipping. This visual feedback makes it easy to prevent overloading the preamps.
Compatibility: Scarlett audio interfaces are designed to work seamlessly with popular digital audio workstation (DAW) software on both Windows and Mac platforms. They connect to your computer via USB or other interfaces, depending on the model.
Software Bundle: Focusrite often includes a software bundle with their Scarlett interfaces. This bundle may include digital audio workstations, virtual instruments, and audio effects, adding value to your purchase.
Build Quality: Scarlett interfaces are known for their durable build quality, making them suitable for both studio and mobile recording setups.
Scarlett preamps are widely appreciated for their performance, reliability, and ease of use. Musicians, home studio enthusiasts, and professionals often choose Focusrite Scarlett audio interfaces for their recording needs, as they offer a great balance of affordability and audio quality.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, this unit fit in a standard 8-RU case |
Answer: | Yes it can. Often times, that's exactly what many people call them. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us. We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | I'm trying to decide between the scarlett dynamic and the clarett. compressors aside, is the clarett much better and can you hear the difference |
Answer: | The AudioBox iTwo is the latest release in PreSonus' AudioBox line of products. There is the older AudioBox USB, the Audiobox 22VSL, and the AudioBox iTwo (or iOne if you only want a single preamp). The main difference between this and the previous AudioBox USB is that they updated the look, and also introduced a tablet port so you can connect it to your iOS device to record directly to your iPad or iPhone. The AudioBox 22VSL has built in effect processing while monitoring so you can hear the effects as you are playing, it also has the highly-regarded XMAX preamps. If you find this answer helpful, please consider buying from us! - Pixel Pro Audio |

Question: | When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw |
Answer: | Hello, Yes this is possible in Windows. To expose additional channels from your Scarlett interface to non-ASIO applications (e.g. Skype, Discord, Zoom, Audacity) first click the Focusrite Notifier icon in the taskbar, then click "Expose/Hide Windows Channels": Best Regards, Anthony // Focusrite Support |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

Question: | Does the unit come with a usb cable to connect to USB port for laptop |

Answer: | Amazon and eBay both have options to purchase just a windscreen. It should be the same size as a Sennheiser lav windscreen. |
Question: | Does the headphones come with quarter inch adapter |

Question: | So laptop will power this via USB and provide sufficient phantom power to any condenser mic |
Answer: | Yes I do mines outdated |
Question: | Aside from the 2 wires in the picture does it come with the wire for the back |

Question: | has anyone confirmed the low latency on the usb version? i'm a pc user, & thunderbolt isn't compatible |

Question: | I will not be using the mic inputs, only using it for playback in protools. Will I see any benefits over the scarlet? quality? latency? etc |

Question: | My motherboard has a usb 3.1 expansion card, but it is not a type c connection. will i still get the same low-latency connection with this interface |
