User questions & answers
Question: | combo or the v67g for my youtube gaming channel? (i have an audio mixer /w 45-48v phantom power) i am upgrading from my sf-666 mic |
Answer: | Either one of those choices will require phantom power, have a cardio pattern (where the mic picks up), and are XLR They begin to deviate a bit tone wise but you can adjust that, also with two mics you have more variety to how you can capture voice. The V67g come in a pouch while the 990/991 are housed in a hard shell, pelican like case. You may like to know I've recorded podcasts and conversations and the 990 picks up everything in the room which can be good or bad depending on your environment. |
Question: | What is phantom power |
Answer: | Phantom power is a power supply used to power condenser mics. The standanrd voltage on phantom power is 48v, but some mics may vary. |
Question: | does the bundle come with a shockmount for the |
Answer: | No, but there is a set where the 990 comes by itself with a shockmount. Sadly this one does not include a shockmount |
Question: | Does anyone experience buzzing and scratching coming from the mics? Mine buzz and fuzz all the time |
Answer: | Can you describe your setup? What kind of preamp are you using, do you have a power conditioner, what kind of interface or board are you running the signal into? Sometimes, something as simple as a bad cable or dusty pot can add fuzz or noise to your audio signal. This is more likely to be the case if more than one mic is sounding bad.On the other hand, if these are the only mics that sound bad in your current setup, then it could possibly be a quality control or shipping condition (these mics ride in container ships from China) issue.Personally, I've never had a bad experience with my MXL mics, but a friend of mine who has the 990/991 set had the diaphragm in his pencil mic go out, so it's certainly a possibility. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of cable does it use |
Answer: | Balanced mic/patch cable, Male XLR to Female XLR |
Question: | Hi, if I buy this mic., do I also need a shock mount beside phantom 48v power supply & xlr cable? So is phantom itself act as a mixer at the same time |
Answer: | You do not "need" a shock mount as the V67G comes with a hard mount, later on down the road you may want to upgrade to one. Phantom power is just power that is sent over a mic cable to power the mic. It usually comes from an audio interface or mixer. So yes, you would need a Mixer or an Audio interface to use this. |
Question: | Is this mic better than the audio-technica at2035 large diaphragm studio condenser microphone |
Answer: | My opinion, both Mics are entry level studio quality. The Audio Tech is a solid mic, it is a better quality built, the MXL has that crisp high's sound. So MXL wins on sound quality, but few adjustments on your DAW, and Audio Tech sounds very similar But If you check out the "level up" MXL mics like the MXL 550/551R Microphone Ensemble, is little more expensive than MXL V64g. My opinion, the Audio Tech is a famous brand. Similar level, I can't say its better.. but i will always choose the MXL brand over any HOME use mic. In studio, I prefer the Rode Mics for my voice. |
Question: | Can you just plug this into a computer or does it need to go through a sound board |
Answer: | This mic used phantom power, which means that it is not suited to just plug in to your computer without an interface. If just plugging directly in is what you want to do, then I would suggest looking at the Blue, snowball or Yeti Pro, the apogee mic, or any other usb condenser mic. |

Cardioid
The Cardioid polar pattern excels at picking up sound from the front of the microphone, less from the sides and has good rejection of sounds to the back of the microphone. Select the cardioid pattern for situations when you want to pick up specific sound sources, such as a specific guitar within an ensemble, and is recommended for recording applications where the acoustics are good, but not perfect. For instance, a cardioid pattern is less likely to pick up ambient noise from computers and recording equipment.
Omni-Directional
The Omni-Directionalpolar pattern picks up sound equally from all sides of the microphone. This is best used for recording in environments with excellent acoustics, as the omni-directional pickup excels at picking up ambient noise. The omni-directional polar pattern is less sensitive to 'plosives', handling noise and the proximity effect.
Figure 8
The Figure-8 polar pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amound of rejection 90 degrees off axis. Figure-8 patterns are the most susceptible to proximity effect and are commonly used in Mid-Side (MS) stereo recording setups.

Question: | Can you record drums with these two microphones |
Answer: | Hello, You technically can, though it will not leave you with much control afterward. With these two, I would recommend putting the large diaphragm condenser in front of the kit so it can capture the whole kit and the room sound a bit and the small diaphragm on the side of the snare shell for more control over that afterward. You could also just use the smaller one as an overhead, but it really depends on the style you are going for. Hope that helps!
