12 best usb preamps
A USB preamp, also known as a USB audio interface or USB microphone preamplifier, is a device that amplifies and enhances the audio signal from a microphone or other musical instruments before converting it into a digital format. It is related to musical instruments, microphones, and their accessories.
Here are some key points about a USB preamp:
Audio Amplification: A USB preamp amplifies weak audio signals, such as those from microphones or musical instruments, to a level suitable for further processing or recording.
Pre-amplification: The term "preamp" stands for preamplifier, indicating that this device amplifies the signal before it reaches the main recording or processing equipment.
USB Connectivity: A USB preamp is equipped with a USB interface, allowing it to connect to a computer or other digital recording devices. This enables the conversion of analog audio signals into digital format for recording or processing on a computer.
Analog-to-Digital Conversion: The USB preamp often includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that converts the analog audio signal into a digital format that can be used by recording software on a computer.
Enhanced Audio Quality: USB preamps can improve the audio quality of recordings by providing better signal amplification and reducing noise and interference in the audio signal.
Compatibility: USB preamps are compatible with a variety of microphones and musical instruments, making them versatile tools for recording different types of sound sources.
Controls and Features: USB preamps typically have controls for adjusting gain (amplification level), phantom power (for condenser microphones), and sometimes additional features like equalization or effects.
Recording Studio Use: USB preamps are commonly used in recording studios, home studios, and for live sound reinforcement to capture high-quality audio for music production, podcasting, voiceovers, and more.
In the context of musical instruments and microphones, a USB preamp is an important accessory that allows musicians and recording artists to capture and enhance their performances with professional audio quality, whether in a studio or on location. It serves as a crucial link between analog sound sources and digital recording devices, facilitating high-fidelity recording and production.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are you able to monitor the output through the computer or do you need to have headphones plugged into the box itself |
Answer: | You can monitor via the computer or headphones or studio monitors. |
Question: | does this work with fl studio |
Answer: | Yes, works well with FL Studio! No latency, after setting up drivers. |
Question: | Can i save the software to add to another computer later |

(You can also deactivate them on a computer as well to keep your activations down to five.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | is the power supply autovolts (110-220V |
Answer: | The power supply we provided is for the USA market only, you could use the 220V adaptor as long as is DC 9V / 150mA spec. |
Question: | Can audio from a connected analog turntable be sent directly to my home theater pre-amp via the optical output |
Answer: | You can connect the analog turntable between UA2D and home theater preamp directly via the RCA connector, not the optical. |
Question: | What size is the headphone input quarter inch or stereo mini |
Answer: | 3.5mm (mini) headphone jack |
Question: | How many ohms does this preamp power? Also, will connecting this to an amp be better |
Answer: | This is pre-amp, so it cannot power speakers. Ohms are not relevant in that sense. It probably can power many headphones from the monitor jack on the front, but volume may be limited. Also can drive powered speakers that have their own internal power amplifiers from the RCA outputs on the back. Yes, you definitely need a power amp to drive non-powered speakers. Now, the amp can be a standalone basic or integrated into another device such as a receiver, or as I indicated, powered speakers. But don't let that fool you. You need an amp somewhere in the system, and this is not one since it is a pre-amp. |

Question: | I have a XLR microphone if i use this cable and plug it into my microphone and have the usb be plugged into my pc will it be easy to set up like a usb |
Answer: | Yes. You will need to configure your PC to accept it in whatever program / app you use to "record" or "broadcast." |
Question: | can it connected to a cardoid mic such as Shure SM |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I plug this into my computer and use audacity to record |
Answer: | If you have a recording interface, you should be able to just plug from the quarter inch out on the Joyo to the quarter inch in on the interface. If you are using the computers 3.5 millimeter input, just make sure you do trial run or two to set the Joyo's Level control so that it doesn't distort the pc input. You may also need adapters or cables to fit the actone and pc jacks in order use them together. |
Question: | Can you bypass the cabinet simulator? is there a switch for that? (in case i want to use it with a guitar amp instead of direct to pa |
Answer: | Oh yeah, for bypassing the simulator you press on the switch and it turns the pedal off/on. you can use this as a preamp or a drive to get the AC flavour. The pedal itself isn't a cab simulator but more so copies the AC variety like a Drive pedal. The voice knob is the control for shaping the sound of the amp styles (inside the pedal) (I personally enjoy having the voice at 10o'clock.) I think this will do fine going into your chain and out to an amplifier. Hope this helps! |
Question: | I was wondering how much signal gain/boost this pedal is capable of? Looking to get an instrument level close to line level to feed a headphone amp. TIA |
Answer: | I'm not sure on a technical level how much signal boost this pedal can provide, and I've seen nothing online either, but I've used it straight into a PA without a guitar amp (it's an amp simulator so that sounds pretty good) and it had more than enough signal to work with. |
Question: | hi...is this good for bass |
Answer: | Ran bass through it straight into the PA. Turned effects off and it sounded really good. Used for worship. Typically play guitar and have several pedals on my board with this the last pedal on board. Bypassed all pedals for bass. Ran bass into the input and out to the PA. |

Question: | How well does this interface perform in regards to latency |
Answer: | Up until recently, I could dial down the ASIO buffer to 64 samples and get about 2.5ms latency in each direction. However, it seems that recent Windows updates have wrecked ASIO4ALL, so I can only dial the ASIO buffer size to 256 samples, yielding a latency of about 10ms/21ms. Not great, but usable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage |
Answer: | Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57. |
Question: | will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones |
Answer: | Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency. |
Question: | Can it write four tracks simultaneosly |
Answer: | Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers. |
Question: | Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer |
Answer: | My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it. |
