12 best microphone preamps
A microphone preamp, short for microphone preamplifier, is a vital piece of equipment in the world of audio recording and amplification, especially in the realm of musical instruments and sound reinforcement. It serves the purpose of amplifying the weak electrical signals produced by microphones to a level suitable for further processing, recording, or live sound reinforcement. Here are the key aspects to know about microphone preamps:
Signal Amplification: A microphone preamp takes the low-level electrical signal produced by a microphone (typically in millivolts) and boosts it to a higher, usable level (line level) without significantly degrading the signal quality.
Gain Control: Microphone preamps offer gain control, allowing users to adjust the level of amplification to suit the specific requirements of the audio source and recording or performance scenario. This is crucial for achieving the desired sound without distortion or noise.
Impedance Matching: Preamps often provide options to match the impedance of the microphone to that of the recording equipment. This ensures optimal signal transfer and fidelity.
Tonal Characteristics: Different preamps can impart distinct tonal characteristics to the signal due to variations in circuit design, components, and technology. Some preamps are designed to be transparent and colorless, while others may add warmth, color, or specific tonal qualities to the sound.
Phantom Power: Many preamps provide phantom power, typically 48V, which is essential for condenser microphones to operate. Phantom power is delivered through the microphone cable and powers the internal circuitry of condenser microphones.
Connectivity and Form Factors: Microphone preamps come in various form factors, including standalone units, rack-mounted units, and even built-in preamps in audio interfaces. They often have XLR or TRS input connectors for microphones and output connectors compatible with mixing consoles, recording interfaces, or other audio equipment.
Application: Microphone preamps are used in a wide range of audio setups, including recording studios, live sound setups, home studios, and professional music production environments. They are crucial for achieving high-quality audio recordings and live sound reinforcement.
Quality and Price Range: Microphone preamps vary in quality and price, ranging from budget-friendly options to high-end, studio-grade preamps. The quality of components, circuit design, and overall build significantly affect the price and performance of a preamp.
Understanding how to select and utilize a microphone preamp is essential for achieving optimal sound quality and performance in various audio applications, making it a valuable accessory for anyone involved in music production, live sound, or audio engineering.

1-Channel +25dB in-line microphone preamplifier.
- Uses Phantom power to give passive mics (mainly used for dynamic and ribbon mics) up to +25dB without passing Phantom power on to mic
- Easy to use self contained design requires only Phantom power to work. **Does not use Phantom power to power mics
- Recommended for use with all passive dynamic microphones
- Compatible with tube, battery, or power supply driven microphones – safe for all passive ribbons with no transfer of Phantom
- Does not power the mics themselves using Phantom power (that is not what this is designed for). instead, place the cloudlifter at the front of your dynamic mic, then hit it with Phantom Power and your basic mic (even an SM58 style mic) will shine like never before
User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this with a heil pr-40 microphone |
Answer: | Hi Jeremy...Have not used my cloudlifter with the Heil pr-40.... but since it is a dynamic mic the cloudlifter might just be what the doctor ordered. As you probably know... the unit is great for a 20-25 db boost for mics that would be noisy when you crank the gain/trim pot on a preamp or mixer. I had that experience with an RE-20... noisy as can be when cranking the mixer gain... but clean as a whistle when hooked to the Cloudlifter. Just so you know my signal chain is Neumann TLM 102 mic into an Aphex 230 pre... through a small mackie mixer... into a Presonus firebox interface and finally a PC running Adobe Audition CS6. I have the gain on the pre set at about 2 o'clock and the output level turned all the way down. That means my initial record level is about -16 db and then I just boost it about 5 bd... do my eq and compression processing... then normalize to -3 db. This gives me a pristine noise floor. Hope this helps in spite of the fact I have not have the direct pr-40 through cloudlifter experience.Regards |
Question: | Is this better used for condensor or dynamic microphones |
Answer: | The CL-1 is useful only for dynamic and ribbon microphones, and will not work at all with condensers. The reason for this is that the 48v phantom power supplied from a USB interface, or a mixer, is used by the CL-1 to generate ~25dB of very clean gain. However, this means that the power doesn't get distributed further down the line. If your mic requires phantom power, the CL-1 is useless. However, if you're using a dynamic, the CL-1 is WONDERFUL, it helps generate very clean gain from almost any source. Definitely recommended for dynamics and ribbon microphones. |
Question: | Will this do anything for me if my preamps are already pretty great? I'm using an SM7b |
Answer: | The answer hinges on your definition of "pretty great". What you need from a preamp when you're using an SM7b is plenty of quiet gain. There are many really great preamps that don't have that. This mic needs so much boost that you're going to bring out the noise in just about every pre. The SM7b is a great mic, but I would simply not record it without a Cloud Lifter regardless of the quality of the pre. |
Question: | Do i need 2 xlr cables for this to work? or will just one cable do |
Answer: | Yes, you will need two XLR cables. The CloudLifter CL-1 is intended to be used with both a microphone and a mixer, or a mic and n XLR/USB interface. The CL-1 takes the 48v phantom power from a mixer or interface and turns it into around 25dB of very clean gain. It's intended for use with ribbon microphones, like the Fathead, or dynamics, like the SM58; if you are using a condenser microphone, like the NT1-A, then the CL-1 won't work, since it DOES NOT transfer 48v phantom power to the microphone. In my setup, I've used an SM58, going into the CloudLifter, then going into the FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 XLR/USB interface. (You may want to use the Scarlett Solo, if you only intend to use one mic. It's got the same preamp, but is slightly cheaper.) The end result is very clear, loud, and not at all noisy. I hope this helps you out! |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use this with a ribbon mic sans phantom. Aim is natural sound of my acoustic instrument. How transparent is the neutral setting |
Answer: | A ribbon mic not only does not need phantom power. accidentally switching phantom on may destroy the mic. I like ribbons also. The ART is a great bargain and sounds good generally, but it is not a professional unit, and you get what you pay for. I bought mine because I wanted a "tube flavor" on some tracks. It does not excel at this. But it is a useful unit in other ways, so I kept mine. It is pretty neutral for a tube device, maybe a tad noisier because of the valves. |
Question: | I'm looking for a way to boost the sound volume and quality coming from a blue spark mic for voice-over work. is this what i need |
Answer: | I'm assuming you have the regular Spark, not the digital (USB) version. I have not used the ART for that application, but I find the unit to be a versatile free-standing single channel pre-amp. It's controls allow setting of gain and output, and it will supply phantom power to the mic. Very good bang for the buck, and highly portable. |
Question: | Does this device provide a both left and right output for headphones (mono, but to both sides of the head phone)? thanks |
Answer: | There is no headphone output on this unit. This is a preamp. It is used before the input on a mixer channel. |
Question: | Can this preamp be used safely with a passive ribbon microphone |
Answer: | It should work fine as long as you leave the 48V Phantom off. If you forget, and send phantom power to your ribbon it will never work again. My Tascam Port-a-Studio always defaults to "phantom off" when powered down (or up) and requires 2 keystrokes to turn it on "are you SURE?" This precaution prevents sending phantom to any input other than a condenser mic, which only works with 48V DC. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I see that it has 2 mic inputs. would this be useful for a 2 person podcast with 2 sm7bs |
Answer: | That would be a great use for it |
Question: | does it work with guitars |
Answer: | I suppose it could work, but I don't see the benefit of doing so; perhaps it might even introduce distortion. It is designed for low-output dynamic microphones and ribbon microphones. It takes XLR input; not 1/4" jack input. It doesn't have variable gain.It has just 3000 ohm mic impedence. It is designed to add additional gain for existing pre-amps that should already have enough gain for a guitars.Disregarding the above, isn't typical instrument output levels around -20 dBu? The Cloudlifter provides 20 to 25-db of gain, which is designed to bring microphones that output -60 db up to around -40-db; With a guitar already around -20 db, a cloudlifter might push signal output over line level -- I would suspect that there might be distortion as a result. I wouldn't even recommend the Cloudlifter for most condenser microphones for this reason, as they too have a loud output already.Ultimately, I don't know for sure, but I suspect the answer from most people will be no. |
Question: | How many inputs in this mic Preamp |
Answer: | It's a 2-channel "pre-pre amp" It is not a substitute for a mic preamp. It is used in conjunction with 2 channels of mic preamps which can supply phantom power to this "pre-pre". It is designed to add an additional 25 dB of gain which is useful if one's actual pream has only moderate gain and you are using low output ribbon or dynamic mics. It will not work with a phantom-powered condenser mic or an "active" ribbon mic which require phantom power. |
Question: | What type of xlr cables should i get to use this? i have a shure sm7b. female to male? the from the cloudlifter to a scarlett 18i8 what cable to get |
Answer: | 2 normal XLR mic cables will do it. One from the mic to the cloud lifter and one from the cloud lifter to the interface. The cloud lifter is designed to sit in between the mic and the interface. It’s powered by phantom power from the interface. |

The FetHead from TritonAudio is a low-noise, in-line microphone preamplifier that provides improved sound for ribbon and dynamic microphones. The electronics are housed in a metal chassis with a balanced 3-pin female XLR input and a balanced 3-pin male XLR output. It is suitable for use at home, in the studio, on tour, and more. FetHead's circuit uses phantom power but shields it from the input and the microphone's output, providing protection to the microphone. Attach FetHead to a balanced microphone cable and plug it straight into the microphone. Switch on phantom power and enjoy clean gain. This works with any microphone.
User questions & answers
Question: | I have a shure sm57 that tends to be quiet when recording through my usb interface. Will this give a stronger signal |
Answer: | Yes, it typically sees an increase of 26Db of boost in Gain. Be sure to drastically drop the input of your interface to where it’s only around 25% - 30% volume. No joke, your mic will be coming in hot. Also make sure your interface has phantom power. Cheers! |
Question: | Which end of the preamp goes to the microphone and which end to the cable |
Answer: | On all images i saw at online stores, i see that the top end goes to the microphone, & the bottom go to the cable. |
Question: | The k6 option is expensive can I used this for the sennheiser instead |
Answer: | Currently using it with sennheiser e935 here. It works really great! |
Question: | Why does it say it’s for condenser microphones in the description but shows dynamic mics in the pictures |
Answer: | The Fethead Phantom is for condenser microphones because it supplies phantom power to condenser mics that need it. The other version of this product, just a plain Fethead, does not supply 48 V. That is the version you would use for dynamic or ribbon mics. Though it may be possible for some microphones to use either one, I would not recommend it. Use the version of the Fethead that is intended for your particular type of microphone, condenser or dynamic. I have both, and I recommend both of them for the appropriate type of microphone. They do a really good job of adding gain with very little to no noise. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

Answer: | Yes that is correct. This unit supplies the power you need to run your condenser microphones into your mixer/P.A. |
Question: | The blue light does not come on when I turn the power supply on. Am I gonna have to buy a new one |
Answer: | I have no idea but I would go to the specifications page online to find out. |
Question: | So this plugs into the wall and then the cord from my mic plugs into this? Do i need another cord that goes from this to my computer or amp or camera |
Answer: | You have yo connect both autputs to the amplifier, each microphone output have to be connect to the amplifier |
Question: | Please, let me know if the dc adapter is 100-240VC |
Answer: | I don't understand your question exactly, but I bought this Neewer "power supply" to make my "Condenser" mircophones operate in conjunction with my sound system. If your Heil Fin microphone is a "Condenser" type this Neewer unit with work by supplying the "48 volts" of power it needs to operate with your P.A., thus making the lights go on your microphone. Check the model and make sure it's a condenser style microphone. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect mg06x-6 to tv |
Answer: | here's one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Hosa/Stereo-1-4-Inch-Male-TRS-to-Dual-Male-RCA-Insert-Cable.gc |
Question: | Can i connect its out to irig pre (phone-audio interface) which ultimately connected to phones for recording over iphone/ipads |
Answer: | This mixer with its quality mic preamps (real ones, with plenty of adjustable gain) , EQ, channel output volume, etc. is far superior to the iRig Pre. I tried the iRig Pre (and reviewed it) and didn't like it. To emulate the iRig Pre connections, get a TRRS (male) adapter you plug into your phone/tablet that breaks out separate speaker 1/8" TRS (female) and mic 1/8" TRS (female) connectors. You could use either the XLR or the 1/4" outputs of the mixer as input to the mic 1 /8" TRS connector on the adapter. Unlike the iRig Pre, with a mixer like this you have the option of listening to the realtime output of the mixer from its headphone jack or plug your headphones into the speaker 1/8" (female) connector on the adapter to hear it how the phone/ tablet is recording it (which can be time-delayed making it difficult to speak live while listening to non-realtime audio). |
Question: | Are the 1/4 inch outputs TRS for balanced signal to another TRS input? I'm planning on using this as a simple mixer for input to a Bose L1 Compact |
Answer: | The outputs are Stereo outputs, both L and R. (shown on the blue areas of image) |
Question: | Can headphones and stereo out be be controlled independently? I want to listen to either headphones OR speakers, not both at once |
Answer: | On the MG10XU there are two volumes controls. Stereo out and Monitor/Headphones out. I can't tell if this has both knobs or not. You can check the manual for the technical diagram. |

Yamaha MG Series Mixers
For more than a century, Yamaha has been building a legacy of superior craftsmanship and innovation exemplified in all of our products, from an unrivaled catalog of world-class musical instruments to touring-grade professional audio. Now in its third incarnation, the MG Series embodies this pursuit of design excellence, and incorporates some of the same technologies developed for use in high-end professional consoles, including studio-quality preamps, powerful digital processing, and a rugged, reliable construction.
With an intuitive, easy-to-use interface, the MG Series boasts an extensive lineup of compact mixing consoles with models ranging from six to twenty channels, suitable for a diverse range of users and applications. For installed, recording, or live music settings, the solid construction and flexible design of these consoles lets you shape your sound with confidence, continually delivering a level of sound quality and reliability unrivaled in its class.
D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Mic Preamps)
This is where it all starts. Everything you do as a sound engineer is dependent on the quality of your preamps, which determines the direction your mix will take, and ultimately how good it is going to sound. MG Series mixing consoles feature Yamaha's studio-grade discrete class-A D-PRE preamps, which utilize an inverted Darlington circuit comprising two cascading transistors in a configuration that provides more power with lower impedance.
EQ and High-pass Filters
There's nothing more useful than reliable equalization when you need nuanced management of your tone. The MG Series benefits from Yamaha's unparalleled experience in designing pro audio gear, featuring 3-band equalizers on all mono channels for precise control of your sound. High-pass filter allows you to eliminate unwanted low-frequency noise, for a smoother, cleaner mix.
1-Knob Compressors
Compression plays an essential role in just about any recording or sound reinforcement environment by altering the level of dynamics of an audio signal when you need livelier guitars, punchier bass lines, a tighter snare, or a cleaner vocal sound. However, it can take countless hours to master the complexities of even the most basic outboard compression units and use them effectively.
Built-in SPX Digital Effects (MG06X)
For musical and non-musical applications, effects processing adds polish and professionalism to the mix. The MG06X features Yamaha's SPX digital multi-effect processor, offering a comprehensive suite of editable digital effects perfect for enhancing your mix, whether adding depth to a speaking engagement or breathing new color and atmosphere into a live performance.
High Quality Sound Op-amp
The head amp determines sound quality, and op-amp integrated circuits are one of the most important parts in the head amp circuit. MG Series mixers feature new, high-quality, custommade MG01 op-amps that we developed in cooperation with the semiconductor manufacturer. We worked directly with the semiconductor manufacturer to focus on sound quality first.

Original yeti is large and a bit more versatile, you can record in 4 different audio direction, i.e omnidirectional, cardioid, bidirectional, and stereo making it ideal for recording YouTube videos, podcasts, large groups, or instrumentals. Yeti nano has 2 audio recording options , Omni and bidirectional, so made more for podcasts and YouTube videos. It’s also smaller. If you want to check out the nano I did a unboxing of the gold yeti nano, search on YouTube Julian Lonzoe yeti nano. It looks pretty awesome. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect this to a audio interface via xlr |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can i use this as a preamp for my presonus audiobox usb |
Answer: | Yes, it should work fine. Your mic or instrument goes direct into the pre-amp and then just run a short cable from the output of the pre-amp into the channel input of the audio box you want to use. I got one of these recently and am pretty happy with the sound and ease of use. I did take others advice though and swap out the tube for a higher quality one which is pretty easy to do. |
Question: | How to do I connect this to a Audio Interface |
Answer: | This is a microphone preamp, not an audio interface. You would run your microphone to an input on this Presonus, and then there is either an XLR or 1/4 output that you would plug into another USB-type audio interface to go into a computer. |
Question: | Can you run a line and XLR input through this at the same time and have each go to their respective outputs (separate)? Sort like a 2 channel pre |
Answer: | I do not know if this is possible as it is a one channel pre. I would imagine the input /output is either/or. Can't say for certain without trying but I only have one mic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does my mic clip as soon as I plug the mp13 into PC mic in |
Answer: | It sounds like your level into the microphone input on your PC is too high. You would not normally need a preamp to feed a microphone input. The levels out of the preamp would be too high. The preamp would typically be used to feed a line input. If you need to raise the level into a microphone input you would not want very much gain. |
Question: | will this work with windows 7 PC |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | What size dc adapter does this unit use |
Answer: | comes with its own ac adapter, -15 volts. |
Question: | can this be used with a dynamic microphone.?I do not want any dc voltage on the line |
Answer: | Yes. Dynamic mic's are fine. It's what we use for our diver comm system in a research aquarium. I feed the divers mic's to a multi-input mixer from these Rolls preamps. |
