14 best mic preamps
Mic preamps, short for microphone preamplifiers, are essential audio devices used in the recording and sound reinforcement industry. They play a crucial role in improving the quality and clarity of audio signals captured by microphones. Here are some key points about mic preamps:
Signal Amplification: Mic preamps are designed to amplify the weak electrical signals produced by microphones. These signals are typically very low in amplitude and need to be boosted to line level or instrument level for further processing.
Impedance Matching: Mic preamps also perform impedance matching, ensuring that the microphone's output impedance matches the input impedance of the recording or amplification equipment. Proper impedance matching helps minimize signal loss and interference.
Gain Control: Most mic preamps feature a gain control knob that allows users to adjust the level of amplification. This is important for achieving the desired volume without overloading the audio equipment.
Phantom Power: Many microphones, especially condenser microphones, require phantom power (typically 48V) to operate. Mic preamps often include phantom power supplies to provide this voltage to the microphone.
Noise and Distortion Reduction: High-quality mic preamps are designed to minimize noise and distortion, ensuring that the amplified signal is clean and free from unwanted artifacts. This is particularly important in professional audio recording.
Input and Output Connections: Mic preamps typically have XLR input connectors for microphones and various output options, such as XLR, TRS, or even digital outputs like ADAT or USB.
Portability: Some mic preamps are designed for portable use and can be connected directly to a laptop or mobile device for on-the-go recording.
Types of Mic Preamps:
- Stand-Alone Mic Preamps: These are individual units dedicated solely to the task of amplifying microphone signals.
- Built-In Mic Preamps: Many audio interfaces, mixers, and recording equipment have built-in mic preamps, eliminating the need for stand-alone units.
- Tube Mic Preamps: Some mic preamps use vacuum tube technology to impart a warm, vintage character to the audio signal.
- Solid-State Mic Preamps: Solid-state mic preamps are known for their reliability and low noise characteristics.
- Hybrid Mic Preamps: These combine the qualities of both tube and solid-state preamps for a unique sonic signature.
Applications: Mic preamps are used in a wide range of applications, including recording studios, live sound reinforcement, podcasting, broadcasting, and home recording setups.
Budget and High-End Options: Mic preamps come in a variety of price ranges, from affordable options suitable for beginners to high-end, professional-grade preamps preferred by professional audio engineers.
In summary, mic preamps are critical components in the audio recording and reinforcement process, ensuring that the signals from microphones are properly amplified, clean, and ready for further processing or amplification. The choice of a mic preamp can greatly influence the overall sound quality of a recording or live performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use this with a ribbon mic sans phantom. Aim is natural sound of my acoustic instrument. How transparent is the neutral setting |
Answer: | A ribbon mic not only does not need phantom power. accidentally switching phantom on may destroy the mic. I like ribbons also. The ART is a great bargain and sounds good generally, but it is not a professional unit, and you get what you pay for. I bought mine because I wanted a "tube flavor" on some tracks. It does not excel at this. But it is a useful unit in other ways, so I kept mine. It is pretty neutral for a tube device, maybe a tad noisier because of the valves. |
Question: | I'm looking for a way to boost the sound volume and quality coming from a blue spark mic for voice-over work. is this what i need |
Answer: | I'm assuming you have the regular Spark, not the digital (USB) version. I have not used the ART for that application, but I find the unit to be a versatile free-standing single channel pre-amp. It's controls allow setting of gain and output, and it will supply phantom power to the mic. Very good bang for the buck, and highly portable. |
Question: | Does this device provide a both left and right output for headphones (mono, but to both sides of the head phone)? thanks |
Answer: | There is no headphone output on this unit. This is a preamp. It is used before the input on a mixer channel. |
Question: | Can this preamp be used safely with a passive ribbon microphone |
Answer: | It should work fine as long as you leave the 48V Phantom off. If you forget, and send phantom power to your ribbon it will never work again. My Tascam Port-a-Studio always defaults to "phantom off" when powered down (or up) and requires 2 keystrokes to turn it on "are you SURE?" This precaution prevents sending phantom to any input other than a condenser mic, which only works with 48V DC. |

1-Channel +25dB in-line microphone preamplifier.
- Uses Phantom power to give passive mics (mainly used for dynamic and ribbon mics) up to +25dB without passing Phantom power on to mic
- Easy to use self contained design requires only Phantom power to work. **Does not use Phantom power to power mics
- Recommended for use with all passive dynamic microphones
- Compatible with tube, battery, or power supply driven microphones – safe for all passive ribbons with no transfer of Phantom
- Does not power the mics themselves using Phantom power (that is not what this is designed for). instead, place the cloudlifter at the front of your dynamic mic, then hit it with Phantom Power and your basic mic (even an SM58 style mic) will shine like never before
User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this with a heil pr-40 microphone |
Answer: | Hi Jeremy...Have not used my cloudlifter with the Heil pr-40.... but since it is a dynamic mic the cloudlifter might just be what the doctor ordered. As you probably know... the unit is great for a 20-25 db boost for mics that would be noisy when you crank the gain/trim pot on a preamp or mixer. I had that experience with an RE-20... noisy as can be when cranking the mixer gain... but clean as a whistle when hooked to the Cloudlifter. Just so you know my signal chain is Neumann TLM 102 mic into an Aphex 230 pre... through a small mackie mixer... into a Presonus firebox interface and finally a PC running Adobe Audition CS6. I have the gain on the pre set at about 2 o'clock and the output level turned all the way down. That means my initial record level is about -16 db and then I just boost it about 5 bd... do my eq and compression processing... then normalize to -3 db. This gives me a pristine noise floor. Hope this helps in spite of the fact I have not have the direct pr-40 through cloudlifter experience.Regards |
Question: | Is this better used for condensor or dynamic microphones |
Answer: | The CL-1 is useful only for dynamic and ribbon microphones, and will not work at all with condensers. The reason for this is that the 48v phantom power supplied from a USB interface, or a mixer, is used by the CL-1 to generate ~25dB of very clean gain. However, this means that the power doesn't get distributed further down the line. If your mic requires phantom power, the CL-1 is useless. However, if you're using a dynamic, the CL-1 is WONDERFUL, it helps generate very clean gain from almost any source. Definitely recommended for dynamics and ribbon microphones. |
Question: | Will this do anything for me if my preamps are already pretty great? I'm using an SM7b |
Answer: | The answer hinges on your definition of "pretty great". What you need from a preamp when you're using an SM7b is plenty of quiet gain. There are many really great preamps that don't have that. This mic needs so much boost that you're going to bring out the noise in just about every pre. The SM7b is a great mic, but I would simply not record it without a Cloud Lifter regardless of the quality of the pre. |
Question: | Do i need 2 xlr cables for this to work? or will just one cable do |
Answer: | Yes, you will need two XLR cables. The CloudLifter CL-1 is intended to be used with both a microphone and a mixer, or a mic and n XLR/USB interface. The CL-1 takes the 48v phantom power from a mixer or interface and turns it into around 25dB of very clean gain. It's intended for use with ribbon microphones, like the Fathead, or dynamics, like the SM58; if you are using a condenser microphone, like the NT1-A, then the CL-1 won't work, since it DOES NOT transfer 48v phantom power to the microphone. In my setup, I've used an SM58, going into the CloudLifter, then going into the FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 XLR/USB interface. (You may want to use the Scarlett Solo, if you only intend to use one mic. It's got the same preamp, but is slightly cheaper.) The end result is very clear, loud, and not at all noisy. I hope this helps you out! |

The FetHead from TritonAudio is a low-noise, in-line microphone preamplifier that provides improved sound for ribbon and dynamic microphones. The electronics are housed in a metal chassis with a balanced 3-pin female XLR input and a balanced 3-pin male XLR output. It is suitable for use at home, in the studio, on tour, and more. FetHead's circuit uses phantom power but shields it from the input and the microphone's output, providing protection to the microphone. Attach FetHead to a balanced microphone cable and plug it straight into the microphone. Switch on phantom power and enjoy clean gain. This works with any microphone.
User questions & answers
Question: | I have a shure sm57 that tends to be quiet when recording through my usb interface. Will this give a stronger signal |
Answer: | Yes, it typically sees an increase of 26Db of boost in Gain. Be sure to drastically drop the input of your interface to where it’s only around 25% - 30% volume. No joke, your mic will be coming in hot. Also make sure your interface has phantom power. Cheers! |
Question: | Which end of the preamp goes to the microphone and which end to the cable |
Answer: | On all images i saw at online stores, i see that the top end goes to the microphone, & the bottom go to the cable. |
Question: | The k6 option is expensive can I used this for the sennheiser instead |
Answer: | Currently using it with sennheiser e935 here. It works really great! |
Question: | Why does it say it’s for condenser microphones in the description but shows dynamic mics in the pictures |
Answer: | The Fethead Phantom is for condenser microphones because it supplies phantom power to condenser mics that need it. The other version of this product, just a plain Fethead, does not supply 48 V. That is the version you would use for dynamic or ribbon mics. Though it may be possible for some microphones to use either one, I would not recommend it. Use the version of the Fethead that is intended for your particular type of microphone, condenser or dynamic. I have both, and I recommend both of them for the appropriate type of microphone. They do a really good job of adding gain with very little to no noise. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

rolls Mini Single Ch Mic Preamp (MP13)
- mini
- single channel
- ch mic preamp
- Country of Origin: China
User questions & answers
Question: | Why does my mic clip as soon as I plug the mp13 into PC mic in |
Answer: | It sounds like your level into the microphone input on your PC is too high. You would not normally need a preamp to feed a microphone input. The levels out of the preamp would be too high. The preamp would typically be used to feed a line input. If you need to raise the level into a microphone input you would not want very much gain. |
Question: | will this work with windows 7 PC |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | What size dc adapter does this unit use |
Answer: | comes with its own ac adapter, -15 volts. |
Question: | can this be used with a dynamic microphone.?I do not want any dc voltage on the line |
Answer: | Yes. Dynamic mic's are fine. It's what we use for our diver comm system in a research aquarium. I feed the divers mic's to a multi-input mixer from these Rolls preamps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could i use this with vinyl turntables |
Answer: | 33.3 RPM records require RIAA equalization and most phono cartridges require very low noise high sensitivity input gain stages, which the DBX 286 does not have and which makes this unit unsuitable as a turntable preamp. However, if your records are vocal speech only and you can provide the 286 with an adjustable line level input signal, you might be able to use the unit as a speech processor for your turntable. If you are unsure of what I am talking about, then the answer to your question is "no". |
Question: | If i set it up with an interface would i set it up like this? mic > pre amp > interface > monitors/headphones please explain proper setup |
Answer: | John, you would plug MIC > DBX 286s > LINE INPUT of your interface. Receive the line input signal in your DAW and adjust your settings as necessary on the CH strip. Your monitors would plug in to your interface as normal. If you have further questions , please let us know! |
Question: | My plan is to use a Microphone - into XLR - then into Channel 1 on my Focusrite 18i20. How does someone use this as an 'INSERT"? What is an INSERT |
Answer: | I'd imagine more or less you'll be doing this the same way I have mine set up. You run your XLR into the back input of the DBX 286s, then use a 1/4" audio out into your first channel preamp on your Focusrite interface. Currently Focusrite cannot get a signal with WDM (only ASIO gets a signal) if you try using the 1/4" audio out into the rear inputs. Only the front ones work until they address it with a patch. |
Question: | Will this prevent clipping? My music has a lot of soft parts and parts where I'm shouting. Thanks |
Answer: | The only thing I use to prevent mic clip is mic staging and proper leveling in side what ever DAW your using. In other words sing lower parts louder by moving to the mic and loud parts lower by moving away from the mic. So the DBX is pretty good for the price but without proper mic staging could add to your problem. |

WA12 MkII Microphone Preamp. "A lot of preamps on the market do a good job of raising the volume of mics and instruments. Unfortunately, many pres are doing only that, raising volume. The aoeSuper cleana designs of today often leave the signal exiting the preamp sounding much the same as it did entering it. If you are looking for a preamp to improve and shape your signal you will most definitely love the WA12 MKII. The WA12 MKII is designed to transform plain instruments and vocals into exciting tone. If your mixes lack depth, struggle to sound alive, or are just missing that professional touch youaTMve always wanted, there is a good chance you will love the WA12 MKII. Packed With Performance The WA12 MKII is a completely discrete, high voltage, dual-transformer microphone preamplifier designed for high gain (+71dB), high headroom, low noise, and an exciting sonic performance a" great for all types of recording applications. A high quality mic preamp is one of the most critical pieces needed to achieve the elusive a larger than lifeaTM sound, and the WA12 MKII is more than capable of delivering. ? The WA12 MKII is based around a discrete op-amp, the X731, which is our own reproduction of the vintage classic Melcor 1731, considered by some to be the warmer predecessor to the modern 2520-style op-amp. The X731 can achieve vibrant, clean and lifelike tones; but can also be driven into mild saturation at much higher gain levels. The effects can be subtle, but very pleasing to the ear. The WA12 MKII can also accept any discrete op-amp on the market which conforms to the +/-16v, 2520 pinout standard."
- "Utilizes premium grade input and output USA CineMag transformers 71db of Gain, fully discrete signal path Utilizes a discrete 6-pin socketed 1731 style opamp TONE button - Switches the input impedance from 600 ohms to 150 ohms Mic level balanced input: XLR"
- "A lot of preamps on the market do a good job of raising the volume of mics and instruments
- Unfortunately, many pres are doing only that, raising volume
- The aoeSuper cleana designs of today often leave the signal exiting the preamp sounding much the same as it did entering it
- If you are looking for a preamp to improve and shape your signal you will most definitely love the WA12 MKII

User questions & answers
Question: | would this work with the shure sm7b? and do you need a cloudlifter as well |
Answer: | should work...needs phantom power....I have no experience with that mic but other reviews mentioned it works with that mic....used with SM57 and Sennheiser 609 where you need some signal boost |
Question: | Does it need phantom power? will it work with sennheiser mke |
Answer: | The sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite 1 requires 48V phantom power provided by a preamp/mixer/audio interface. It only works with ribbon/dynamic passive microphones and incompatible with phantom-powered microphones such as condenser and active ribbon microphones. |
Question: | Can it work for sennheiser ew100 G4 wireless mic |
Answer: | No. It works with wired mics only. |
Question: | can you hide this or does it have to be plugged straight into the mic? for example I have the shure sm7b and was wondering if it would be seen from it |
Answer: | You can connect the sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite anywhere in the chain. You can plug it like Shure sm7b → XLR cable → sE DM1 → XLR cable → audio interface. Please make sure that you connect DM1's XLR cable into a phantom powered microphone input. Otherwise, it might not work or cause damage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect this to a audio interface via xlr |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can i use this as a preamp for my presonus audiobox usb |
Answer: | Yes, it should work fine. Your mic or instrument goes direct into the pre-amp and then just run a short cable from the output of the pre-amp into the channel input of the audio box you want to use. I got one of these recently and am pretty happy with the sound and ease of use. I did take others advice though and swap out the tube for a higher quality one which is pretty easy to do. |
Question: | How to do I connect this to a Audio Interface |
Answer: | This is a microphone preamp, not an audio interface. You would run your microphone to an input on this Presonus, and then there is either an XLR or 1/4 output that you would plug into another USB-type audio interface to go into a computer. |
Question: | Can you run a line and XLR input through this at the same time and have each go to their respective outputs (separate)? Sort like a 2 channel pre |
Answer: | I do not know if this is possible as it is a one channel pre. I would imagine the input /output is either/or. Can't say for certain without trying but I only have one mic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I didn't really understand the inputs on this mixer. So I have 3 electric guitars, and an electronic drum kit. Can all of these, with mic,be connected |
Answer: | This mixer does not have sufficient mono channels for your application. Channels 2-3 and 4-5 are stereo inputs (meaning they are contolled with the same fader). Some of the larger Xenyx mixers will get you the inputs you need.... something with at least 5 distinct faders to control each instrument's mix individually.Hope this helps. :-) |
Question: | Does this mixer support 48V Phantom Power |
Answer: | Most microphones do not require 48 volts of phantom power. Many condenser microphones only require somewhere between 4 and 12 volts. You should check your mic. It looks like this is a 15 volt feed. |
Question: | Can this mixer connect to a PC via a soundcard |
Answer: | Yes, to an analog soundcard. All you need is a 1/8" stereo to dual-RCA cord. Mixer has both input and output RCA capability, so you could feed the output of the mixer to the line/mic of the soundcard or feed the output of the soundcard (line out/speaker out) to the input of the mixer. There is also a headphone jack on the mixer so that could also be patched back to the soundcard's line in/mic. For me, I am usually running the PC speaker out to the mixer RCA input -- the volume is controlled by the Main, and then I can either use headphones from the mixer or run the 1/4" output into my guitar amp. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What does the 2 track input do |
Answer: | The 2 track input allows you to connect an external music source to the xenxyx mixer and then into an amplifier with speakers or headphones using the outputs located near the top. The external music source can be anything that has the red and white RCA outputs such as a cassette/CD player or VCR/disc player (the red and white input/output for the 2 track are called RCA connectors). This is so you can plug in your CD player and also a microphone and an instrument that has a 1/4" output such as a guitar or electric piano and have it all mixed together. Just below the 2 track input are a couple of buttons that allow you to choose whichever output you want, either headphones or amplified speakers (main out). The 2 track outputs on the mixer will allow you to send the vocals and/or instrument mix to a recording device that has the red and white RCA inputs. I hope this helps. |
