14 best bass preamps
A bass preamp is an essential piece of equipment for bass guitarists and is often used in both live performance and studio recording settings. It serves several important functions related to shaping and enhancing the sound of a bass guitar. Here's what you need to know about bass preamps:
Signal Enhancement: A bass preamp is primarily used to improve the quality of the bass guitar's signal before it is sent to an amplifier or recording system. It helps boost the low-level electrical signal generated by the bass guitar's pickups.
Tone Shaping: Bass preamps come with various controls that allow musicians to shape the tonal characteristics of their bass sound. These controls typically include knobs for adjusting bass, midrange, and treble frequencies. This enables bassists to tailor their sound to suit different musical styles and preferences.
Gain Control: Most bass preamps feature a gain or volume control. This allows you to adjust the level of the input signal to match the requirements of the amplifier or recording equipment.
Equalization: Bass preamps often include an EQ (equalization) section, which enables fine-tuning of the bass guitar's tone. You can boost or cut specific frequency bands to achieve the desired sound, such as emphasizing the low-end for a punchy bass sound or boosting mids for more clarity and presence.
DI (Direct Injection) Output: Many bass preamps include a DI output, which allows you to connect your bass directly to a mixing console or audio interface for recording or live sound reinforcement. This is particularly useful for studio recording and gigs where you need a clean, noise-free signal.
Compression: Some bass preamps have built-in compression circuits that help control the dynamic range of your bass signal. Compression can even out the volume levels, providing a more consistent and polished sound.
Phantom Power: If you're using a condenser microphone with your bass setup, some bass preamps offer phantom power to supply the necessary voltage to the microphone.
Portability: Bass preamps come in various sizes, including pedal-sized units, rack-mounted units, and standalone units. The choice depends on your specific needs and whether you want a portable solution for live performance or a dedicated unit for studio recording.
Compatibility: When choosing a bass preamp, it's essential to ensure compatibility with your bass guitar and amplifier. Some preamps are designed for specific pickup types or instruments.
Price Range: The cost of bass preamps varies depending on features and quality. There are options available for different budgets, from budget-friendly to high-end models.
In summary, a bass preamp is a versatile tool for bassists, allowing them to shape their bass guitar's tone, enhance its signal, and easily integrate it into various performance and recording setups. It's a valuable addition to any bass player's gear, offering flexibility and improved sound quality.

Question: | Does the output and the xlr out work simultaneously so as to link with the Amplifier on the stage and also send the balanced out to the mixer |
Answer: | They work simultaneously the plug and xlr to link with the amplifier and to send the balance to the mixer, if you've got all the wire it will be fine |
Question: | How does this compare to the mxr m80 bass d.i.+, and is it appropriate for both active and passive basses, or only one type |
Answer: | I use both in my chain (starting with the m81 and then ending with m80) - but if I only had to choose one I would get the m81. There are more possibilities in shaping the tone and the m80 distortion is not as good as the boss IMO. I have a passive bass and have not heard it on an active. I hope that helps! |
Question: | can you just use a preamp instead of ab amp head |
Answer: | If you want to drive loudspeakers you have to have some sort of power amp; this preamp will amplify the instrument signal enough to drive a power amp and speakers. It does not put out enough power to drive speakers or even headphones but it will drive a power amp, a PA or a recording desk quite well. Self-powered speakers also have some sort of power amp built in and the MXR M81 preamp should be able to drive a self-powered speaker adequately. |
Question: | This helps the sound for an Active Bass |
Answer: | Yes, this preamp works with both passive and active basses. I used it for creating a different EQ from the sound I had set on my active bass that I could activate with just a press of the footswitch rather than quickly trying to change the knobs on the bass. The DI output works whether the EQ section is active or not. |

The Sadowsky Onboard Bass Preamp (4-Knob System) is a completely prewired system offering the same controls and the same legendary active preamp as all Sadowsky basses. This preamp is designed for installation on most J-style basses with a metal control plate. On newer active J-style basses with a side jack and a battery compartment, usually no modification is required. On passive basses, the only required modification is to move the output jack to the side of the instrument and to make room for a battery. The controls are: Volume – Pan (Balance) – VTC (Vintage Tone Control) – Treble / Bass. The treble and bass controls are boost only - flat response is with the controls at their complete counterclockwise position. The VTC control is passive, the maximum setting is a flat EQ. The further you turn the control down, the more the high end in the signal will be attenuated. The preamp can be installed either with the included control plate or mounted through a rear control cavity in either a 4-in-line or diamond pattern. This system is not compatible with active pickups requiring anything else than a 250K or 500K volume or balance pot.
- Prewired onboard bass preamp for J-style basses with metal control plate
- Active preamp for passive pickups
- 4-knob layout with controls for Master Volume / Balance / Vintage Tone Control (P/P) / Treble and Bass (stacked)
- Push/pull function at VTC knob for preamp bypass
- Can be installed either with the included control plate or mounted through a rear control cavity
- A bass guitar preamp, DI box, impulse response (IR) loader and audio interface for practicing, gigging and recording in the box.
- 3-Band Equalizer with Middle Frequency Selector.
- Drive with blend control.
- Built-in noise reduction. XLR DI output.
- Micro B USB input for firmware update, software control, IR loading, and audio stream

Product description
Besides being an amazing composer, producer and bassist, Jon Stockman is amazing at crafting some of the most devastating bass tones in the world. We got together in our then Helsinki headquarters 18 months ago and after endless tweaking and tens of prototypes we are finally ready to announce our first co-designed creation: Alpha Omega. This creation differs greatly from our previous preamplifiers and overdrives: it is fully operational amplifier based and has two distinct distortion circuits (Alpha and Omega) which can be selected or blended using our Mod knob. This unusual control, in conjunction with the toggle switches and 3 active band equalizer makes Alpha Omega the most flexible among our designs.
- Blend: mixes the clean and processed Signals. The clean signal remains at unity gain while the volume of the overdriven signal is set by the level knob, allowing for fine mix tuning.
- Mod: Selects or mixes between the two distinct distortion circuits: Alpha is punchy, tight with a lot of definition, whereas Omega is simply brutal and raw.
- Bite: boosts high midst (2.8Khz) for additional presence and definition.
- Growl: Shelving Bass Boost for a fatter tone and increased low end saturation.
- Direct Output: A balanced version of the ¼” output, useful for running into PA’s or studio mixing consoles.

Tech 21 dUg Pinnick DP-3X Signature Pedal
A super-compact adaptation of his Tech 21 Ultra Bass 1000 Signature head, the DP-3X also recreates the sound dUg originally developed way back in the ‘80s, merging high-end distortion with low-end bass. Prior to his signature head, this involved running a guitar amp and a bass amp together, along with rack full of effects. Wanting to further streamline his gear for occasions when his full Tech 21 rig simply isn’t practical, dUg collaborated on the all-analog DP-3X pedal. Personally beta-testing the DP-3X on a European tour, dUg encountered a different backline in each and every venue. But no matter which amp was on stage, dUg was able to nail his immense tone each and every night.
In addition to achieving dUg’s unique tone, the DP-3X has the flexibility to provide traditional bass amp sounds as well. Mix mode engages Drive to bring in distortion and Chunk for upper harmonics. A Gain button provides additional distortion and compression. In clean/full-range mode, Drive and Chunk disengage, while Comp and Gain remain active. Other controls include 3-band active EQ with switchable Mid and a master Volume. Features include chromatic tuner, headphone capability, and an XLR Output to go direct to the PA desk or studio board without compromising detail, warmth or responsiveness.
- Controls include 3-band active EQ with switchable Mid and a master Volume
- Chromatic tuner
- Headphone capability
- XLR output

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be wired with 18v |
Answer: | You could but I would not, the control board is a 9v board 18v will probably damage it. I assume you are trying to use two 9v batteries for your build so if you wire them in parallel rather than series and you can double your amps instead of your volts this wont damage the control board but you might get a little bit of a shock on the strings if everything isnt grounded well. |
Question: | Is this a true active/passive system like the Bartolini preamp system |
Answer: | I have not installed the system into my bass as yet. |
Question: | Thinking of installing this into my custom p bass. any recommendations |
Answer: | Swap the separated bass/treble pots for a concentric 100k pot. Also, if your p bqss also has just 1 pickup, remove the balance knob and change the volume knob for a push/pull 500k... so you can change passive / active |
Question: | Is there a wiring diagram for active pickups |
Answer: | There is no wiring diagram. It is pretty simple for active pickups or non-active. There are 3 wires that attach to the "blend" pot for the pickups. I call it "blend" because there are 5 pots, V, B, M, T, and the "blend". V=volume, B=bass, M=middle, T=treble. "Blend" would be tone, but T is already labeled. Battery is there, and a input jack. I had to cut and solder the battery connector because my bass has a special compartment for the battery. You will need to solder the pickup wires, all 3. The 3 wires to the "blend" pot are for 1) neck PU (P1) 2) bridge PU (P2) and 3) ground/common. There is a bridge hardware ground (common) spare wire as well so you don't get shocked. You can see that spare wire in one of the photos, its a bare wire with black insulation. |

Geddy Lee has been performing without onstage amps and speakers since the Test for Echo Tour in 1996, favoring major household appliances instead. Wanting to streamline his gear for new projects, Geddy initially partnered with Tech 21 to design a Signature SansAmp, the GED-2112. This challenging collaboration involved distilling a rackload of equipment into a single rackspace. According to Geddy, The GED-2112 is really a continuation of my long-time approach to bass tone. A 'deep clean' tone coupled with the 'edgy crunch' I get from the SansAmp RPM now all in one box. The GED-2112 rackmount introduced a new framework for Parallel Pre-Amping having two separate internal pre-amps. Following this concept, the compact SansAmp YYZ pedal adapted the architectural structure to simplify blending the two signal paths. Merging the design of the rackmount and the portability of the pedal, the SansAmp DI-2112 offers yet another new format that is designed to be equally at home on a studio desk-top as well as an amp-top.The Drive pre-amp section is based upon the versatile SansAmp RPM, for a wide range of sonic possibilities. The Deep pre-amp section offers thick, meaty tones. Saturation goes from clean in lower settings to increased harmonics and tube-like compression in higher settings. You can use either section independently or blend them externally direct to a mixing board as well as to two amplifiers. Each Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp offers Geddy's core sound and the versatility for many different styles.Features:Dual, All-Analog SansAmp Circuits w/ Individual Level ControlsDrive for Gain OverdriveSaturation for Low-End Beef w/ Separate Level ControlBlend to Control the Ratio of SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation Your Direct Instrument SignalSweepable Semi-Parametric EQ, 170 Hz to 3.0 kHz, Cut/Boost 12dBTight Switch Adds Definition to Your Notes in Cleaner Settings Makes Distorted Tones SnappierDual Balanced Low Impedance XLR Outputs w/ Level Selec

Question: | Can you change the out puts to so they carry both signals thru one output like on the rack unit thru the jumper inside |
Answer: | Yes. When I emailed them they sent me this response: "On the DI, you need to access a small switch on the underside of the circuit. It is between the two battery doors". They also sent a pic. |
