What is Kalimba?

The kalimba is an African musical instrument with a wooden soundboard and metal keys. The 15-key kalimba that we are making at Juma Instruments is an instrument that originates from African ethnic groups in Southern Africa. In the classification of musical instruments the kalimba is in the category of lamellophones or plucked idiophones (Hornbostel-Sachs system).

Kalimba is one of the names used for this 15-key African lamellophone. Other language varieties are Nyunga nyunga, Nyonga nyonga and Karimba. Karimba translates to “little wooden xylophone” and Nyunga nyunga translates to “something little that causes fun trouble”…

Variations of the kalimba are found all across Africa, for example in Zambia they play the Kankobela which has 7 to 12 keys. In Congo they play the Likembe which has 8 keys in pentatonic tuning.

Actually picking the stick up and hitting the other one. The one that looks like a flute it works pretty much like it. You blow into it and start putting your fingers on the holes and learn the different sounds. Its a very Peruvian sound. The one that looks like a long wooden corn shape with lines sideways. How to Paste Stickers?

We usually paste color stickers on the keys to make it easier to find the keys quickly when reading the music notation of Kalimba. First, you can paste a color sticker on the longest key in the middle, and then paste another color sticker on the keys every two keys. You can also label your Kalimba any way you like.

Hold and Play Kalimba

Hold the Kalimba in both hands and pluck the keys with the nails of thumb (as shown in the picture). It is recommended that the length of your nails be 2-3 mm, and the proper strength and angle when playing the thumb piano can make the sounds clean. As you become familiar with the position of the Kalimba keys, you can play some complex but more wonderful songs with some playing techniques, such as double-tone or glissando playing different keys at the same time to make sounds.

Using the Glissando to Play Chords

The glissando is a technique by which you pluck several keys at once to make a chord. Compared with other musical instruments, Kalimba is set up to play chords nicely and easily. Any 3 adjacent tines will play a wonderful triad chord - we use the nail slides through the thumb piano keys to make a sound. Furthermore, a chord produced by a glissando will ring for several seconds, which will enable you to play a melody on the other keys, and produce some gentle harmony. This makes beautiful music, simply.

Wah-wah Performance

Kalimba has a main sound hole and two auxiliary sound holes. When you play, you can press your thumb into the main sound hole, which feels like you want to push the sound back, or use two middle fingers to shake on the back auxiliary sound holes to produce a Wah-wah sound. You can even make three holes work together at the same time, and the wah effect will be more obvious.

My only issue....if we keep giving toys with lead to our kids, that amt of lead ppm rises depending upon the intake of lead they swallow. Not worth it.

Question:	How much is the postage on this item
Answer:	They all make sounds, now are they accurate? NO. The harmonica has 2 holes, and makes 2 tones tops. The trumpet keys do not work. The "flute" (looks like a recorder to me) requires changing your embouchure to change the pitch. Will an 18 month old understand this? Probably not. The only parts of this that work like a real instrument are the drum, the maracas, and the tambourine.

Answer:	I suggest going to YouTube and searching kalimba. YouTube has a lot of tutorials for beginners. That’s where I learned. I own a few kalimbas and I never opened the manuals that came with them. Just YouTube what you want to learn and you’ll probably find several videos about it. I hope this helps.
