12 best clarinet ligatures
Clarinet ligatures are essential accessories for woodwind instruments, specifically the clarinet. They play a crucial role in securing the reed to the mouthpiece and influencing the instrument's sound and playability. Here's what you should know about clarinet ligatures:
Function: The primary function of a clarinet ligature is to hold the reed securely onto the mouthpiece. This ensures that the reed vibrates freely when the player blows air through the instrument, producing sound.
Materials: Clarinet ligatures are typically made of metal, plastic, or fabric. Metal ligatures are the most common and are often constructed from materials like brass or silver-plated brass. Plastic and fabric ligatures are less common but can offer specific tonal characteristics and aesthetics.
Design: Ligatures come in various designs, including two-screw, three-screw, or inverted designs. Two-screw ligatures are the most common, featuring two screws that apply even pressure on the reed. Three-screw ligatures provide additional control over reed placement and tension.
Pressure and Tension: The tension applied by the ligature onto the reed is adjustable using the screws. Players can fine-tune the sound and response of the clarinet by adjusting the ligature's tightness. A tighter ligature can produce a brighter, more focused sound, while a looser ligature can result in a warmer, darker tone.
Materials and Sound: The material and design of the ligature can impact the instrument's sound. For example, metal ligatures are often associated with a brighter, more focused sound, while fabric ligatures may produce a mellower tone.
Ease of Use: Some ligatures are designed for quick and easy reed changes, while others may require more time and precision during setup. Players often develop preferences for ligatures that suit their playing style and comfort.
Compatibility: Clarinet ligatures are available in different sizes to fit various types of clarinets, including Bb clarinets, A clarinets, and bass clarinets. It's important to choose a ligature that matches the mouthpiece and clarinet model.
Maintenance: Ligatures should be cleaned regularly to remove moisture, dirt, and residue that can accumulate over time. Routine maintenance helps ensure consistent performance and prolongs the life of the ligature.
Personal Preference: Ligature choice is a matter of personal preference for many clarinet players. Some may experiment with different ligatures to achieve their desired sound and response.
Price Range: Clarinet ligatures are available in a range of price points, from affordable options for beginners to high-end ligatures used by professional players. The choice often depends on budget and performance needs.
In summary, clarinet ligatures are vital components of the clarinet setup, influencing the instrument's sound, response, and playability. They come in various designs and materials, allowing players to customize their sound and find the ligature that best suits their playing style and musical preferences. Proper setup and maintenance of the ligature are essential for achieving optimal performance from the clarinet.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a cap |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Will this fit snug on an selmer goldentone mouthpiece? I purchased an ligature on ebay, and it kept rising up, felt extremely cheap |
Answer: | Thank you for taking the time to read/respond to my question. I have an Bundy clarinet with an replaced Selmer goldentone mouthpiece. |
Question: | Do u have to twist the screws a lot for it to work |
Answer: | No, I bought it to replace one that came with my clarinet and it works the same. |
Question: | One side of each of the screws is shaved flat. Is this normal now |
Answer: | That's how it made so I would say yes. It worked great for me. Replaced a ratty looking ligature on a 40 year old seamer. Worked and looks great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this ligature fragile |
Answer: | It has a scale length of 24" just like any Fender Mustang, so I guess you could call it "full sized". The shorter scale makes it slightly easier to play than a Strat with a 25.5" scale. |
Question: | Is there any way to get the interchangeable plates serparate from the ligature |
Answer: | 39.5 not counting the strap button. |
Question: | what kind of mouthpiece is it |
Answer: | 40 inches |
Question: | How do the three plates differ - what playing characteristics are peculiar to each one |
Answer: | There is no "tremolo" or "whammy" bar connection. You can always install a Bigsby and they have several models available. I would not suggest installing one, first, because it has a thin enough neck that bending a chord is very easy, second, even doing a complete chord bend is easy due to the neck shape. It does not have a standard Stratocaster tailpiece which is set into the body with springs and a "tremeolo or whammy bar". It only comes with instructions and hex keys to adjust the instrument settings. No cord is included but it does come pre-strung with nice sounding Fender strings.... no extras, just an awesome instrument. The Mustang is worth more than the price you'll pay to get one... but you have to buy one so your eyes can appreciate it.. I bought two.... A purchase that you will not regret. |

Question: | is this made of leather |
Answer: | Sometimes pics look somewhat different on a computer or phone. I just looked at the jazzmaster on amazon and it’s a little different than what it looks in person. Sonic blue is a very light or pale blue. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Which Rovner Clarinet Ligature is compatible with the Yamaha 250 & Buffet B12? I hadn't thought of asking till I stumbled on BC sizing chart for fit |
Answer: | I can’t speak for other sellers, but we open, inspect, test and repackage all of our guitars more securely before shipping. |
Question: | How do i put the ligature on? (Is the screw in the front or the back, or does it not matter |
Answer: | It's a tremolo bridge. I tend to be a bit heavy handed too (I'm primarily a bass player) and I use heavy picks and haven't had a problem. |
Question: | Which way is the ligature supposed to go on? With the wider part up or down? The picture makes it look like it goes up but I thought it goes down |
Answer: | the guitar i bought was used like new, boxed and packed as other instruments i have bought on line |

User questions & answers
Question: | I read that this ligature 'cannot be inverted to all positions' What does this mean |
Answer: | It's really great. Wireless guitar transmitter and receiver are easy to pair. After the pairing successful, you don't need to connect next time, just plug in the amp. The sound quality is very good. |
Question: | Doesn’t Martin frost use this ligature and how does this compare to the vandoren leather |
Answer: | Thank you so much for inquiry about Getaria pro wireless guitar system. Wireless transmitter receiver will not change the tone of the effect pedal, restore your real sound. |
Question: | Is the V-1R only for Hard Rubber mouthpieces or can it go with a plastic one as well like can it work well with the Vandoren 5-RV mouthpiece |
Answer: | Thank you so much for inquiry about Getaria pro wireless guitar system. The signal transmission of our product is stable and clear, and it is also suitable for electric guitars with pickups |
Question: | Can I buy replacement inserts for the mouth piece? I lost one of them |
Answer: | Yes , it will fit a strat input jack and not be in the way when playing. It's a great sounding unit. The charge only lasts about 2 1/2 - 3 hours , but it recharges to full in an hour. Doesn't color your sound and "feels" good when playing just like using a cable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | That’d be cool if it was gold plated. I don’t think it is tho lol. Is it |
Answer: | I assume that this is the MOZ Marching Baritone Horn. I am not familiar with Euphoniums. The sound was very acceptable. But too expensive for what you get. You cannot get MOZ for any support. They are a phantom company. Further, I had to replace all three pistons. When I pulled them out to place valve oil on them they looked disgusting. I took them to a repair and had all three pistons replaced. After that, being an amateur, it was acceptable. Since you are buying from Amazon go with the Schiller Field Series Baritone Horn (not the elite model). The elite model is heavier and sounds more like a marching trombone. For the MOZ I would not pay more than $300. |
Question: | Is there a difference in sound or response depending on finish |
Answer: | no |
Question: | Is there a diiference is sound and response based on finish |
Answer: | I'd say approximately 70mm |
Question: | I own a Bonade inverted ligature and the metal is soft and i need to remold it every time. Will this lig solve it and improve tone quality |
Answer: | yes it does but it is very tiny. way smaller than what i thought i saw in the pics |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work on the Vandoren T20 Tenor,? this seems to be a smaller mouthpiece |
Answer: | You get both the base and the windows! Thank you. |
Question: | Which one fits vandoren sm833 b7 v16? i ordered the baritone one and it's to large |
Answer: | No. I just purchased one new in May 2016 and the valves are broken. I have used it about six times. Total time less than an hour. |
Question: | Una pregunta sobre el producto esto esto se puede usar para saxofon tenor |
Answer: | Yes but I would not buy it. Go to Wessex or Schiller. Moz does not provide support. You are on your own if it gets damaged within a week or two or have any questions. |
Question: | Is there a way I can only get the pressure plates |
Answer: | This is a question actually. Did you end up finding a horn? I'm looking for one as well. My kid is about the same age as yours so it ended up perfect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this mouthpiece fit a nuvo jsax |
Answer: | This flip-folder comes with 5 pages. If you want more, last time I ordered, they were $1 each. Look up, 'Corder 6040 Flip Folder Window'. They're available at most any music supply place, or even here. I like these because they are non-glare! They're also thicker and more durable (won't tear). Good luck! |
Question: | will this fit a round mouthpiece |
Answer: | That comes with 5. We do also sell a 15 page flip folder on Amazon |
Question: | Does this mouthpiece fit with 2.5 reeds |
Answer: | I don't know the exact measurement of the shape of the metal bar or your baritone's bracket. It was slightly too large for ours, so we used a dremel to evenly/gently grind away on two of the sides of the metal section that would fit into the bracket. Then we used 180 grit sand paper to smooth the rough edges and surface. It loses the gold color but is hidden in the mounting bracjet at that point anyway. |
Question: | I have a yamaha AS-C# mouthpiece will this ligature fit it |
Answer: | Yes, the Flip Folio is designed to be held in place by a lyre and will work on any instrument which has a lyre attached. |
