10 best violin pick ups

Violin pickups are devices used to amplify the sound of a violin, making it easier to project the instrument's sound in live performances or recordings. These pickups are essential for musicians who want to use their violins in a band or amplified setting. There are several types of violin pickups available:

  1. Piezoelectric Pickups: Piezoelectric pickups are among the most popular choices for violinists. They work by converting the vibrations of the violin bridge into electrical signals. These pickups are usually mounted on or under the bridge and can provide a clean and natural sound. They are also less prone to feedback compared to other pickup types.

  2. Magnetic Pickups: Magnetic pickups are similar to those used in electric guitars. They consist of a magnet and a coil of wire, and they capture the vibrations of the strings. While magnetic pickups can produce a strong signal, they may not capture the natural acoustic sound of the violin as faithfully as piezoelectric pickups.

  3. Contact Pickups: Contact pickups are attached directly to the body of the violin. They can be placed on various parts of the instrument, such as the top, side, or back. These pickups capture the vibrations of the wood, which can result in a unique and often warmer tone compared to other pickup types.

  4. Microphone Pickups: Some violinists prefer using microphones to amplify their instruments. These microphones can be clip-on or stand-mounted, and they capture the sound of the violin in a more natural way. However, they are susceptible to feedback and may require careful placement and sound engineering.

  5. Transducer Pickups: Transducer pickups are another type of pickup that can be attached to the instrument's body. They work by sensing vibrations in the wood and converting them into electrical signals. Transducers can provide a balanced sound and are less prone to feedback.

  6. Combination Pickups: Some violin pickups combine multiple pickup types to achieve a more versatile and balanced sound. For example, a pickup system may include both a piezoelectric pickup and a microphone to capture the best of both worlds.

When choosing a violin pickup, it's essential to consider your specific needs and the type of sound you want to achieve. Experimentation and testing different pickup types and placement positions can help you find the right pickup solution for your musical preferences and performance requirements.Additionally, it's important to invest in a quality preamp and amplifier to ensure that the amplified sound of your violin meets your expectations.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this pickup work for viola
Answer: Hey, David. I use mine for a violin and haven't tried it on a viola. Are a violin bridge and a viola bridge the same size? Of they are, then it should work fine as little metal/copper part of the pickup is secured into the bridge. The piece is small enough that I know it wouldnt work for a cello, but Im not 100% sure about the viola.
Question: Does this pickup make a muted sound at all since it’s connected to the bridge
Answer: It does a bit, but is still by far the best pickup for a Acoustic instrument.
Question: How to fix on the violin? I can not see on your pictures
Answer: The bar goes under the bottom edge of the violin. Tighten with the bar provided
Question: Any luck finding any other clip on pickups?? Is Barcus Berry Worse? Is the Preamp Necessary for live stuff
Answer: This clip is far from ideal, but it's the only one I've used. Your violin repair person may have to widen the curlicue on the bridge to accomodate it. If your not careful, you can snap a small piece of the bridge off. You do need a preamp. Get one with Bass, Trebble and Mid controls. I think Fishman makes one. Barcus Berry I don't know.

Answer: It comes with a jack, but installation does require some soldering. I got mine professionally done so I wouldn't have to mess with the the installation, since I don't have a soldering iron.
Question: Does this come with the clips to mount the pickup elements to the bridge
Answer: Yes it does, they're super tight though. I had to widen them a touch because I couldn't get them on my bridge and it was making the pickups slide everywhere

Product description

Violin Pickup

  • Reproduces the natural sound of a violin to an amp or PA set up.
  • Clips into the "F" hole.
  • No battery needed.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this supposed to have foam or padding on the bottom? Mine doesn't and no matter where I place it I am getting a lot of distortion
Answer: It is a very pale sea green. I understand that was, at certain points in history, a traditional color for tea ware.
Question: Since this pickup is made for a violin, I assume it would also work for a mandolin with f-holes. But what about an oval-hole mandolin
Answer: I ordered the two 5-oz. cups, received them in perfect condition, opened the box and found the label on the box states, Made in China." Very good quality and the best fluid volume I could find for cast iron tea cups. I like to stick a circular magnet to the base, pour the tea and let that magnetism mellow my tea. Restaurantware looks like a good brand
Question: I installed this on my violin and plugged it into my amp (which I re-tested with my guitar to be sure) and got no sound. User error or defective
Answer: yes. it is enameled on the inside.
Question: I am wodering, has anyone used this on an acoustic cello? i wonder if this will pickup the lower sounds
Answer: Mostly ornamental. You can drink form them but you have to wait a minute until they cool down.

User questions & answers

Question: There is a red mark on one end of the piezo strip; does it matter which way it is oriented, i.e. to the treble or bass side
Answer: No. It is a nice set and all the pieces fit together well. It was purchased as a “Thank You” gift for our outgoing organization president to take with her when she travels for work, so we wanted something that traveled well. A “rattle” would have been unacceptable.
