12 best pedal tuners
Pedal tuners are essential tools for guitarists and bassists that help them keep their instruments in tune during performances or practice sessions. Here's what you need to know about pedal tuners:
Functionality: Pedal tuners are designed to tune musical instruments accurately. They are typically placed on the pedalboard of a guitarist or bassist, allowing them to quickly and conveniently tune their instrument by stepping on the pedal.
Display: Most pedal tuners feature a clear and easy-to-read LED or LCD display that indicates whether a string is in tune, sharp, or flat. Some models use a needle-type display that moves to the center when the string is in tune.
True Bypass: Many pedal tuners have a "true bypass" feature, which means that when the tuner is not engaged, it doesn't affect the guitar's signal path. This ensures that your instrument's tone remains unaltered when you're not actively tuning.
Chromatic Tuning: Pedal tuners typically support chromatic tuning, which means they can detect and tune to all 12 notes in the chromatic scale. This versatility allows you to tune to any desired pitch, not just standard tuning.
Accuracy: Pedal tuners are known for their high accuracy. They can typically tune your instrument to within a cent (a hundredth of a semitone), ensuring precise tuning.
Durability: These pedals are built to withstand the rigors of live performances and heavy foot traffic on stage. They often have a sturdy metal construction to ensure durability.
Power Options: Pedal tuners can be powered by batteries or by an external power supply. Some models also offer the option of daisy-chaining power with other pedals on your pedalboard.
Mute Function: Many pedal tuners have a mute function that silences your instrument's output when engaged. This is useful for tuning silently during a performance or between songs.
Polyphonic Tuning: Some advanced pedal tuners offer polyphonic tuning capabilities, allowing you to strum all your strings at once and quickly see which strings are out of tune.
Calibration: Pedal tuners often allow you to adjust the calibration to match different reference pitches or to use alternative tuning systems like drop-D or open tunings.
Pedal tuners are a crucial accessory for guitarists and bassists, helping them maintain accurate tuning in various playing situations. They offer convenience, accuracy, and durability, making them an essential tool for any musician who wants their instrument to sound its best.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this tuner do accurate drop tunings |
Answer: | Yes. I use it for standard but also to adjust during gigs to Eb, Dropped D, etc. Great pedal less than half of its more popular competitors. |
Question: | Is it a true bypass pedal |
Answer: | Although it might say true bypass, it’s definitely not. I’ve had this for a while and it’s been affecting my tone. I can’t get super clean tones with it, there’s a very noticeable break up. Looking for a new tuner. |
Question: | Do you have to hold the switch down, or does it click |
Answer: | It clicks to toggle the tuner on and off. When off the unit passes the signal thru to the amp. When on, it allows you to tune without the sound coming through the amp. At least, when it works. Which it rarely did for me. |
Question: | Can this tuner handle a low B on bass quickly without having to use the harmonic |
Answer: | Hi there. Being the manufacturer we were hoping others would chime in so that you could get real user feedback, but the TinyTune was designed to handle the low B string on a 5-string bass without any issues. Hope that helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | I play in c#f#be on bass. how would you make that the setting to tune to |
Answer: | Set it to chromatic. |
Question: | Is this product adequte for a 10 string pedal steel guitar ? I was told to get a tuner that shows the frequency and I do not see a # on the display |
Answer: | This won't show the frequency in Hertz, but it will indicate pitch, and the 10 string pedal steel should be in its range. There is a dot on the display to indicate a sharp. |
Question: | How does the TU-3 effect a fuzz face if it's placed a couple pedals away after the fuzz ? I assume it has a buffer like most Boss pedals |
Answer: | Put fuzz before this tuner or on a loop switcher or on a volume pedal. Especially true for germanium fuzz devices and certain other types of dirt pedals. The Waza version of the TU-3 has a switch that makes it true bypass. If you understand what I'm saying about fuzz pedals then you definitely want that. That said, it's a very good buffer, but it will interact with fuzz pedals in a pretty annoying way. The people who are saying it doesn't affect other pedals don't understand the issue. Some vintage-style Fuzz pedals tend to turn into full volume howling noise when you turn your guitar volume down, if they are on the wrong side of this kind of buffer. This is not a value judgement, and it's inappropriate to invoke Pete Cornish here. Buffered pedals are good. Some very desirable pedals really, really want to be before the first buffer. |
Question: | I see a reviewer fault it for picking up ambient vibration, and one for a slow response time. Anyone else experience these as a problem? Thanks |
Answer: | No, I don’t have those problems, great tuner, great mute button. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What does the center button do |
Answer: | On/Off switch. When On and tuning, no sound gets through to the amp. When playing, you need to turn the tuner to OFF. The LED display is off while you're playing. |
Question: | is it sutable for tuning 8 string low stuff or bass |
Answer: | Works GREAT tuning my 5 string bass... |
Question: | Can you see the screen in the dark, IE.. is it backlit |
Answer: | Yes it is. In fact, the entire backlit screen turns green when the string is in tune (it is blue otherwise, flat or sharp). However, I can't figure out how to change the tuning mode from chromatic to guitar. It works in chromatic mode, but I feel it would work better if it only had EADGBE to choose from. |
Question: | When tuning, does it mute the output |
Answer: | I use this tuner on my pedal board. Yes, it does mute the output when engaged for tuning. It is also true bypass when not tuning. Not a fancy tuner, but perfect for live performance. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this tune to sharp tunings |
Answer: | Yes, you cycle through with the flat button |
Question: | Will the output still work if it it turned off |
Answer: | The bypass output ignores the tuner completely and outputs whatever comes in over the 1/4" TS Input jack. So yes, this will still work if the tuner is turned off. |
Question: | tuner works great but i get a loud pop in the amp when i turn it on. bad switch |
Answer: | I have one of these....no pop. Possibly a bad switch, but may also be a bad cable one on the output end. |
Question: | How many milliamps of power draw |
Answer: | Correction: This power supply provides up to 1000ma. I am using it for the EHX Soul Food (22ma draw), Russian Big Muff (22ma) and Canyon Delay (150ma)...Also a TC Wiretap (100ma) and a digital tuner (50ma). No problems at all running everything simultaneously. You really cant harm any 9v center negative device with this, it's just a matter of if your draw meets or exceeds 1000 ma. At which point the devices may or may nit work correctly, but will not harm your pedals/devices at all. It also powers Zoom Devices (g1on) with no problems |

User questions & answers
Question: | If running off battery and the battery dies, does it pass the signal through as if the tuner wasn't even there or does it block the signal |
Answer: | Signal is bypassed only when the unit is on. If there’s no power it shouldn’t bypass. |
Question: | Does this newer version of the Pitchblack have an aluminum casing or plastic casing |
Answer: | Metal |
Question: | Doesn't this tuner show the sharp and flat notes? Or do I need to buy the chromatic version (for twice the price) to get that feature |
Answer: | This tuner does not show flats or sharps....never even thought about this until your question! We use 3 in our household for tuning violin, cello and guitar. Didn't know there was a chromatic version. But, why can't you tune any instrument to a given non-accidental note anyway? |
Question: | Can this still display the notes while playing even when you're not tuning |
Answer: | When you hit the toggle switch for tuning mode, it mutes the sound but displays notes for tuning. Hitting switch again reverts to sound but note display is NOT shown when playing. |

Question: | Does this have a microphone to tune acoustics? If so does it work while plugged ti to the board? Thanks |
Answer: | Hi Matt, This one is just for use with the 1/4" input with a cable, it doesn't have an onboard microphone. Peterson does do a clip-on tuner for acoustics, the StroboClip HD, if you want something more geared towards an acoustic guitar use. Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary |
Question: | Would this tuner work well for an electric dobro?i |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't. I am loving this thing. |
Question: | Does it have “always on” mode for playing with a pedal steel |
Answer: | Buffered Bypass / Monitor Mode ( Default ) In this position, the output is driven exactly as in Buffered Bypass Mode but the tuner display remains active when un-muted to monitor tuning while playing. |
Question: | Will this work with a 5 string bass |
Answer: | Yes, the StroboStomp HD has several tuning modes, including those for bass and can handle a Low B string with no issues. Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary |
Product features
StroboStomp HD
The StroboStomp HD boasts a high-definition, LCD screen that incorporates a variable color LED backlight. The user-selectable colors can be used to personalize the tuner or to increase display viewing quality in different levels of ambient lighting depending on the usage environment. The vibrant screen colors can also be assigned to stock or user presets to significantly reduce menu navigation time and increase on-stage tuning confidence at the gig.
Pure Buffer Mode Operation
Does your love for effect-driven musical chaos require a massive pedal board? Need that XL cable for jumping off the stack during your face melting solo? No problem!
The StroboStomp HD features a PURE buffer mode to preserve the sonic clarity of your axe while enabling you to run a collection of pedals and long cable lengths without compromise.
100% Pop-less True Bypass
We've redesigned and greatly improved the way incoming signal was handled in true-bypass mode to deliver a perfectly silent experience when muting your signal.
A dual relay circuit effectively bleeds out any incoming signal before powering the tuner down resulting in a silent transition without affecting tone quality.
Easy To Read Display
The multi-color display on the StroboStomp HD is easy to see - even in direct sunlight! The strobe image and note name appear monochromatic in direct sunlight making it very easy to view what is going on with your tuning when playing outdoors.
Tune confidently with the largest strobe and note name pattern ever designed into a pedal tuner.
Sweetened Tunings
Sweetened Tunings are exclusive presets are instrument specific - optimized tunings - that are designed to compensate for an instrument's shortcomings to help increase its playability across a broader range of notes. Brighter and cleaner tones can be achieved using these proprietary Sweetened presets that are currently available for over 135 instrument types in the StroboStomp HD. Use our presets or create your own via Peterson Connect (visit our website) and load them in via the USB port.
We All See Color Differently
The LCD display on the StroboStomp HD is easy to see in bright lighting conditions but the LED backlight color is user-adjustable to suit your particular viewing preference. Globally change the display color for all functions or choose to associate colors with specific tunings for easy and quick identification at the gig. Create custom colors on Peterson Connect or use any of the 10 preset colors to organize your preset tuning list.
How Does It Work?
Every Peterson strobe tuner is a genuine strobe tuner that allows you to achieve extreme tuning resolution due to the nature of its display - placing it into 'strobe mode' is not required. In fact, the displays inside every one of our products provide the same tuning feedback as our renowned mechanical tuning strobes; more commonly referred to as 'spinning wheel' strobes.

Question: | I cant get mine to play more than 2 seconds without repeating itself. Am I doing something wrong |
Answer: | I plan on purchasing this item and will be happy to respond w/ an actual answer. I don't understand why it's easier for some people to complain rather than assist. Suggesting to read the owner's manual is a total PaulVega thing to do. Almost as bad as when people respond w/ an "I don't know" answer. I guess I'm doing the same thing here, but I plan on updating! |
Question: | does it work with a microphone |
Answer: | I think it should work IF you have a high impedance mic with a 1/4” phone plug at cable end. The input impedance spec is 1Meg ohm as are many guitar amp inputs. |
Question: | My son plays guitar and bass... assuming this will handle bass frequencies ok? thanks |
Answer: | Yes, it works very well with an electric bass. |
Question: | Can it tune a bass if so how many strings |
Answer: | Yes, I've used it to tune a 4 string bass. |
