12 best sanding block for guitar
A sanding block for guitars is a specialized tool used in the maintenance and customization of guitars and other stringed instruments. It plays a crucial role in shaping and smoothing various components of the guitar to achieve optimal playability and sound quality. Here's what you need to know about sanding blocks for guitars:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a sanding block for guitars is to level, smooth, and contour different parts of the instrument, including the fretboard, neck, and body. It helps in achieving the desired action (string height) and addressing imperfections that can affect the playability and tone of the guitar.
Materials: Guitar sanding blocks are typically made of wood, acrylic, or other materials with a flat surface. The choice of material can affect the durability and feel of the block during use.
Sanding Grit: Sanding blocks for guitars are often used in conjunction with various grits of sandpaper. Different grits are used for different tasks. Coarse grits are used for initial shaping and leveling, while finer grits are used for smoothing and polishing.
Fret Leveling: One common application of a guitar sanding block is fret leveling. When guitar frets become uneven due to wear or manufacturing imperfections, a sanding block with a straight edge and sandpaper can be used to level the frets, ensuring consistent playability across all frets.
Neck Shaping: Guitarists and luthiers use sanding blocks to shape the neck profile to their preferences. This can involve creating a C, V, or other custom neck shapes for comfort and playability.
Body Contouring: Sanding blocks are also employed to contour the guitar body, particularly in the case of custom guitar building. This helps in achieving the desired curves and contours for both aesthetic and ergonomic reasons.
Finish Sanding: After painting or applying a finish to the guitar, sanding blocks are used for the final sanding and polishing to achieve a smooth and glossy surface.
Precision and Control: Sanding blocks offer precision and control during the sanding process, ensuring that the guitar's critical components are treated evenly and accurately.
Luthier's Tool: Professional guitar luthiers often rely on sanding blocks as part of their toolkit, allowing them to deliver high-quality instrument setups and repairs.
DIY Guitar Maintenance: Guitarists who enjoy working on their instruments use sanding blocks as part of DIY maintenance and customization projects, allowing them to tailor their guitars to their specific preferences.
In summary, a sanding block for guitars is a specialized tool used in guitar maintenance, repair, and customization. It helps in shaping and smoothing various parts of the instrument to ensure optimal playability and sound quality. Whether used by professional luthiers or guitar enthusiasts, it plays a crucial role in achieving the desired results for guitar setup and customization.

FretGuru Precision Sanding Beam/Fret Levelers are the industry Standard, and they measure 16" long by 1" x 2" 6061 T6 aluminum.
both sides are precision Blanchard Ground (which itself is super accurate), and then lapped in on a diamond surfacing table, then our laboratory grade granite surface plate that is acurate to .0001" (one ten-thousandth of an inch) basically unmeasurable.
This thing is so accurate you could use it on the freakin' space shuttle! Do you think it'll make your frets perfectly level? You bet!
We top it all off with a durable and visually amazing candy blue powdercoat finish and laser-etched FretGuru logo.
Ships with premium 100, 240 and 320 grit peel and stick sandpaper included.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use it on acoustic guitar |
Answer: | Yes.. Both sides are ground level.. I just did two guitars with this tool, it works great. The sand paper only last for 1.5 guitars so stock up on new paper |
Question: | Do you have a video displaying his this works, as you have for the fret rocker |
Answer: | Hello,The sandpaper is something we custom cut here in the shop. I purposely cut it to just over 7/8" so the side edges don't overhang the corner of the sanding beam... flapping in the breeze and picking up dust and debris.I plan to offer it at some point here on Amazon, but for now you can get it directly through me ([email protected]) or our eBay store (maybe search for fretguru sandpaper...).We have 100 grit, 220, 240, 320 and 400.Let me know what you need and i'll make it happen. Thanks again,Bernie / FretGuruP.S. A hot tip for the sandpaper, to help remove any remaining sticky adhesive, is naptha... if you can still get it where you're at.It's actually the same stuff that's in the old yellow and blue bottles of Ronsonal lighter fluid... which makes a convenient dispenser too. Be sure to use a new spot on the rag often, and don't go crazy with it.Be sure it's actually naptha, not any type of naptha alternative that comes in the Ronsonal bottles now in many states. The bottle must say "Contains Naptha".Otherwise it'll eat away the blue powdercoat, as acetone or lacquer thinner will. |
Question: | Are both1" sides ground level |
Answer: | The convex curve of the handle is not the same radius as the concave sanding surface |
Question: | Where can replacement sand paper be purchased |
Answer: | No, its for a guitar and bass. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the length 5.12" or |
Answer: | Yes, there's little to no difference. The frets don't really know whether they're installed on an acoustic or an electric guitar :-)Before you start leveling the frets (after you've removed the strings), you may want to loosen the truss rod slightly to get the neck (and fret tops) close to flat, i.e. no "relief" in the neck (forward bow), or back bow. This doesn't need to be perfect, it will just prevent you from needlessly removing too much material from any one area of the frets by having a strong curve in the guitar neck before you start leveling.Another favorite trick: As a guide, use a blue permanent marker (felt tip pen / sharpie etc) to color the fret tops before leveling. This will show where the fret leveler is making contact with the frets and where it is not making contact. It will also show the areas with the most fret wear.As you're getting started with leveling, and possibly making small adjustments in the truss rod, occasionally re-color the fret tops as you go. Be careful not to color the fingerboard wood. And trust me on the blue colored marker :-) Much more effective / visible than a black or red marker.Let me know if you have any questions or would like some guidance. Thanks again,Bernie / FretGuru |
Question: | So is this 3.9" long or 5.12" long? The photo does not match the description |
Answer: | Just Google "sanding beams for fretwork" or "fret leveling with a sanding beam" for videos...there should be a few. This is a standard procedure in luthiery. Here is a good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=xJDb-ICqU90 |
