12 best emg 8 string guitars
8-string electric guitars, often referred to as "8-string EMG guitars," are musical instruments designed to provide a broader range of tones and extended low-end capabilities compared to standard 6-string electric guitars. These guitars are popular among metal, progressive rock, and djent players for their ability to produce deep, heavy sounds. Here's what you need to know about 8-string EMG guitars:
Extended Range: 8-string guitars feature an extended range of strings, typically consisting of six standard-gauge guitar strings (E, A, D, G, B, E) and two additional lower strings (usually tuned to F# and B or other variations). This extended range allows guitarists to access lower notes and chords, adding depth and heaviness to their music.
Pickups and Electronics: EMG (Electro-Magnetic Grover) is a well-known brand of guitar pickups and electronics. Many 8-string guitars come equipped with EMG pickups known for their active design and high-output characteristics. EMG pickups are popular for their ability to capture clear and powerful tones, which is particularly important for extended-range guitars like 8-strings.
Tonewood and Construction: The tonewood and construction of 8-string guitars can vary, but they are often built with features that enhance sustain and resonance. Common tonewoods include mahogany, basswood, maple, and others. The choice of tonewood can impact the guitar's overall tone and sustain.
Tuning and Scale Length: 8-string guitars typically have a longer scale length compared to standard 6-string guitars. The extended scale length helps maintain proper string tension when tuning the lower strings to lower pitches, preventing excessive floppiness and improving playability.
String Gauges: Due to the lower tuning of the additional strings, 8-string guitars often require heavier string gauges to maintain stability and clarity. Players may experiment with various string sets to find the balance between tension and tone that suits their style.
Playing Techniques: 8-string guitars open up new playing techniques and possibilities, including tapping, sweep picking, and chord voicings that were previously impossible on 6-string guitars. Players often explore these techniques to create unique and intricate sounds.
Musical Genres: While 8-string guitars are popular in metal and progressive genres, they are also used in jazz, fusion, and experimental music, where the extended range can be creatively employed.
Customization: Many guitar manufacturers offer customization options for 8-string guitars, allowing players to choose specific features, finishes, and hardware to suit their preferences.
Aesthetics: 8-string EMG guitars come in various designs and finishes, catering to different visual tastes. Players can choose from sleek and modern designs to more traditional aesthetics.
In summary, 8-string EMG guitars are specialized instruments designed to provide an extended tonal range and heavy, powerful sound. They are commonly used in metal and progressive music but can be found in a variety of genres. The choice of tonewood, pickups, and other features can greatly impact the guitar's overall performance and playability.

Although the EMG-85 has more measurable output than the 81, its frequency response and string interface are different. The 85 uses two Alnico magnet loaded coils with a wide aperture to maintain a beefy lowend and a fatter top end. Because of a more natural tone, it works great as a rhythm and blues pickup because it has loads of output but isn't muddy. Itís a perfect choice as a rhythm pickup in combination with an 81 in the bridge, which is the same pickup combination used by Zakk Wylde.

User questions & answers
Question: | does D'addario have heavy gauge strings for a 7 string? I really liked the extra heavy 12/60 strings for my 6 strings, do you have that for a 7 string |
Answer: | You should look into ghs boomers. They have some heavy sets. |
Question: | Are these strings coated? The "XL" implies so |
Answer: | NYXL strings are not coated, and XL is just a product series/family name, which does not imply any specific product specs. - Steve @ D'Addario |
Question: | So what do you Blues players have to say about these strings |
Answer: | Depends on the type of blues you play.... If you lean more toward "Delta", you probably wont like these much 'cause they give you more bottom end and highs and get rid of that muddy low-mid much sought-after in that style. Otherwise, many of us who pursue the more recent guitar gods (aka Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Page, etc.) will probably find these strings to be a nice "push" - to some, it will be like adding well-needed air to a deflating balloon. |
Question: | What is thw difference between Balanced and Not Balanced versions |
Answer: | In producing a Balanced Tension set, D'Addario has attempted to make the string tension of all six strings as equal as possible. The benefit to the play is that pressing on one string feels essentially the same as pressing on any other string. This is especially important for string-bending. Once you learn how much pressure is necessary to bend one string to increase the pitch 1/2 step (for example), the same pressure will increase the pitch 1/2 step on any other string. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought balanced tension 9-40. I received regular 9-42s |
Answer: | Some sellers don't exactly know what balanced tension strings are so they probably though you just wanted 9's |
Question: | stings included in 1 package or just 1 string |
Answer: | The strings are sold in sets of 6 strings. A set of strings for a guitar contains 6 strings... Some music stores sell individual strings, but these strings are sold in full sets of 6. Each string set includes 6 strings: one each of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th string (each string is a different gauge). For example: 1-pack: contains 1 set of 6 strings 3-pack: contains 3 sets of 6 strings (each of the 3 sets contains 6 strings) 10-pack: contains 10 sets of 6 strings (each of the 10 sets contains 6 strings) In other words, if you purchase the 3-pack, you will get 3 full sets of all 6 strings! |
Question: | What does 3D mean |
Answer: | It is just D'Addario's (SKU) way of naming the strings, it's a 3-pack of strings. Their single packs are EXL-110 and the three-pack is just EXL-110-3D.Thanks, Jason |
Question: | Would this work on a les paul special p |
Answer: | Shure thing man it will work on almost everyguitar. The only exeption would be if you were playing a really low tuning these string might not be tight enough hope that helps |
