User questions & answers
Question: | How are the mediums compared to lights, i am looking at these for my first string change and i don't know what i have now. Is there a big difference |
Answer: | Not really a big difference. The most common gauge is 45-65-85-105 (Custom Light). If you like a bit more stiffness in your G and D strings, go with Medium. If you like a little looser E and A, go with Light. If you don't care one way or the other, just go with Custom Light.Mind you, again, it's not a huge difference. It's subtle. I like my E and A a little softer so it's easier to dig in, so I buy Lights (45 65 80 100). |
Question: | Is this a decent guage for drop b on a bass |
Answer: | been using EXL-170 for years with drop B and D tuning 4 string - fender P bass no buzz super clear |
Question: | Do these strings have a real bright tone? I am playing praise and worship music and not sure I want that real bright tone |
Answer: | If you want to avoid any bright tone, then consider taped, flat finish strings that are designed to reduce string and fret noise. Your pick ups and playing style will also affect your tone. These are middle of the road for nickel wound strings. |
Question: | Would the Medium gauge be good for drop D |
Answer: | In my opinion they are good for a drop D |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these the strings that feel lime plastic |
Answer: | No, these strings have very good sound, the problem whith these strings is that if you like "bends" and "vibrato", big erosion on strings caused by the frets in minutes. |
Question: | Does the black come off on your fingers |
Answer: | The coating wears off eventually, but my uncontested strings leave way more black on my fingers than these do. |
Question: | Does this have these 4 strings |
Answer: | Yes, this is the standard guage .45, .65, .85, .105 (5 string set has a .125 B string, 6 string set has a .35 for the high C string as well as the .125 low B). Hope I've helped |
Question: | would like to see black beauty flat wound short scale |
Answer: | That would be amazing! We have offered Black Beauty Round Wounds for Short Scale before. We are waiting for more to be manufactured but do not have a definite ETA. Coated Flats would be very very difficult to make. Flats are polished smooth after the flat ribbon wire is wound. Unfortunately if they were coated they would not be able to be polished so will not be nearly as sooth as a traditional flatwound. Maybe look at Black Nylon Tapewounds if you would like a black flat string. Jason FretNation |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am getting "A string buzz" at or above the nut, because the string going to the tuner doesn't sit low enough.. could this eliminate that |
Answer: | This should do the trick. Also, the nut may be filed too low if this doesn't fix it. You can mix sawdust and superglue to raise the A string nut area if you use the sawdust from another nut or nut material. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these Pups come with the foam supports, mounting screws and brass drop shielding |
Answer: | I purchased the “fender originals” which are different than the “74’s”. I hear the 74’s are good pickups ( the “originals” are not, do not buy those as I wish I’d didn’t ! Mine came with screws and drop shielding. I would think those would come with the same as they are better pickups. I went with the cheap original with the extended poles ( which the string hit all the time ). Again, just stay way from the “American fender originals”, nothing original about those, best of luck and wish I had more info ! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these come with Raised Centers |
Answer: | Yes they do; visually they are identical to vintage Fender pups, indeed they are intended to be replications of pre-CBS Fender pickups in most respects. |
Question: | How quiet are these? i like the sound of my mim jazz but it is too noisy to use in an in ear environment |
Answer: | When I turn the neck pickup on by its self, I get a little noise. The same thing when I turn the bridge pickup. When I turn them up together I don't get any noise. |
Question: | How well will these fit in a squire jazz bass? i have the 70's vibe all natural |
Answer: | I mounted my set in a Geddy Lee signature bass; for all intents a copy of a 1973 Jazz Bass. Assuming that your Squire is made to similar dimensions, you should be able to install those pups with a soldering gun and a screw driver. Good luck! |
Question: | These don't come with raised centers? how will the sound be affected if i put them in my jazz bass with 9.5" radius |
Answer: | No, these dont come with the raised A and D olepieces. But with 9,5 radius you dont need them. I installed these on my MIJ Geddy Lee (9.5") and it sounds perfectly balanced. Raised centers are meant for vintage 7.5" radius or less. |

User questions & answers
Question: | are these good for rock, alternative and punk |
Answer: | I use them to play rock and funk.Use your amp.and bass controls to get the sound you like. |
Question: | Are you supposed to cut these before installing |
Answer: | Cutting Bass strings seems to be a highly discussed topic, but it is not rocket science, it is actually common sense. Since Bass strings have a solid core and a wrap wire, urban legend says that by cutting the strings, the inner core will somehow detach from the wrap. Yes, you should cut the strings, and here is how is done: Thread the string through the bridge and bring it up to your headstock with no slack, hold the string against the tuning post that corresponds to that string. From that post, measure two tuning posts further away and bend the string about 90 degrees on that point. Then, cut the string half an inch beyond that bend (not too close to the bend), make sure to use a cutter able to easily snap clean that string in one go. By doing so, you will not have too many or too few windings around the tuning post (and no, your string’s inner core will not detach). |
Question: | Is the Cobalt ethically sourced? where can more information regarding manufacturing be found |
Answer: | Yuke in with the answer of the year. cobalt is a mineral. minerals are sourced with strip mining. strip mining deliberately defaces the environment so id say no. its not ethically sourced. thousands of cobalts died to make these strings |
Question: | How is this different from 'ernie ball cobalt xxxxx slinky bass set' series |
Answer: | The regular Ernie Ball Cobalt is a roundwound string. This is a flatwound string. While it exhibits the characteristics of other flats, less string noise, smooth slides, etc., with the treble cranked it can slap and pop. These flats tend to have more mids than other flats and are so bright for flats that I have to insert a bridge mute in order to get a James Jamerson type of sound. Hope this helps. |

Question: | Do these have the fabric at the ends of the strings? Also what are they actually called |

Question: | Are these for a 6 String Bass |
Answer: | No, these are for a 4 string bass. :) |
Question: | Will these work well on a fretless bass |
Answer: | They are round-wound, so they might buzz a little, but a lot of fretless bassists actually prefer these. They’re much smoother than ordinary round-wound |

User questions & answers
Question: | I just purchased a set of these etb92m's for my p bass. the blue thread winding came well beyond the nut on all 4 strings? just a fluke |
Answer: | Generally no. It all depends on the instruments construction. If you measure Ball End to Tuning Post for the THICKEST string and it is greater than 38" then these will work. Otherwise they will not. Most likely you need a string with a winding length of 32" or less. Reach out to us with your measurements from Ball End to Nut and Ball End to Thickest Tuning post and we can tell you exactly what will fit. Jason - FretNation |
Question: | Can i put these on an acoustic bass |
Answer: | Stainless steel wrap wire with a round core. They are wound in a way that they are warmer than traditional stainless strings. Be sure to purchase from Fret Nation seller! Jason FretNation |
Question: | I have bass with a measurement of 39 1/2” from ball end to tuner on low E string. What length has a low E length taper that will work |
Answer: | Either an acoustic double bass or an acoustic bass guitar, these would not be the type of string I would recommend. |
Question: | The g string unwound after only two months of sparse use. the last strings i had lasted for two years. could i get a replacement g string |
Answer: | Can’t erase 25 years of endorsing DR Strings! These are MM’s true signature set. |
