14 best acoustic bass guitar strings
Acoustic bass guitar strings are an essential component of any acoustic bass guitar, and they play a significant role in shaping the instrument's tone and playability. Here's what you need to know about them:
String Composition: Acoustic bass guitar strings are typically made from various materials, including:
- Bronze: Bronze strings are bright and articulate, providing a clear and lively tone.
- Phosphor Bronze: Phosphor bronze strings have a warmer and mellower tone compared to bronze strings.
- Stainless Steel: Stainless steel strings offer a bright and punchy tone with excellent durability.
- Nylon: Some acoustic bass guitars may use nylon strings, which produce a warm and mellow sound.
String Gauges: Strings come in different gauges, which refer to their thickness. Heavier gauges provide more volume and sustain but may be harder to play, while lighter gauges are easier on the fingers but may have less volume. Common gauge sets for acoustic bass guitars include light, medium, and heavy.
Long Scale vs. Short Scale: Acoustic bass guitars come in both long-scale and short-scale versions. Long-scale basses have longer strings and frets, while short-scale basses are shorter. It's essential to choose strings that match the scale length of your bass for proper intonation and playability.
Coated vs. Uncoated Strings: Coated strings have a protective layer (usually made of polymer) that extends their lifespan by reducing corrosion and dirt buildup. Uncoated strings may offer a slightly brighter tone but require more frequent replacement.
Tone and Sound: The choice of acoustic bass guitar strings significantly influences the instrument's tone. Bronze strings tend to produce a brighter and more pronounced tone, while phosphor bronze and nylon strings yield warmer and mellower tones. Stainless steel strings provide a brighter and punchier sound.
Playing Style: Your playing style and genre preferences will also dictate the type of strings you choose. For fingerstyle playing, you may opt for lighter gauge strings, while heavier gauge strings are suitable for aggressive picking or slapping techniques.
Brand and Quality: Well-known string manufacturers like D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Rotosound, and Elixir produce high-quality acoustic bass guitar strings.Consider trying different brands and models to find the strings that best suit your preferences.
Changing Strings: It's important to change your bass strings regularly, as old, worn-out strings can produce dull and lifeless tones. The frequency of string changes depends on your playing habits, but a good rule of thumb is to change them every few months or when you notice a significant loss in tone quality.
Setup and Maintenance: Properly setting up your acoustic bass guitar, including adjusting the action and intonation, can maximize the playability and tone of your strings. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your bass and strings also contribute to their longevity.
In conclusion, selecting the right acoustic bass guitar strings is crucial for achieving the desired tone and playability on your instrument. Consider factors such as string material, gauge, and coating, as well as your playing style and genre preferences when choosing the best strings for your acoustic bass guitar.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these strings for a 4 string acoustic bass. And if so are they better than nickel strings |
Answer: | Yes, they are for acoustic bass. Regular nickel electric bass strings won't work on an acoustic bass because they are not loud enough. I am a very active bassist, and D'Addario makes great strings. The Phosphor Bronze have a bright tone, and are my favorite choice for acoustic bass. |
Question: | hi,i have an freetless acoustic bass harley benton, the original string aren't so good,i wish try these, just several mine are |
Answer: | In my experience, factory strings are not very good. I am a D'addario fan. I would recommend any of their products for your fretless bass. I have these strings on my acoustic bass and they have performed beyond my expectations. |
Question: | Is the fifth string a low 'B' and if so, how's the tension on it compared to the 'E' above - does it feel as tight?' Thanks |
Answer: | No, it does not feel as tight. So long as you tune it to low B and you don't have any intonation or string height issues, you're good. Check this out. http://bassplaying.com/diy-bass-setup-guide |
Question: | Are these flat wound strings |
Answer: | They are semi-round wound as they have a hexagonal steel core. I also found this information under the product description listed by Amazon. The strings are great sounding, very bright, and sounds even better plugged into an amp. Still has good tone after months of being stringed... |

Answer: | Hi there, If the scale length of the bass is around 34 or 35 inches it should work. Also John Myung's name appears on the back as an endorsed artists for the strings. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these fit a short-scale; 25" scale, acoustic bass |
Answer: | Yes. They should fit fine. I don't know what length they are. I never used the set I bought. If you have to cut them make sure you put a .90 degree bend at the top.I bought mine with the understanding they were short scale. You may want to go with a major brand short scale set like D'Addario. I can't vouch for the quality of these. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these the strings that feel lime plastic |
Answer: | No, these strings have very good sound, the problem whith these strings is that if you like "bends" and "vibrato", big erosion on strings caused by the frets in minutes. |
Question: | Does the black come off on your fingers |
Answer: | The coating wears off eventually, but my uncontested strings leave way more black on my fingers than these do. |
Question: | Does this have these 4 strings |
Answer: | Yes, this is the standard guage .45, .65, .85, .105 (5 string set has a .125 B string, 6 string set has a .35 for the high C string as well as the .125 low B). Hope I've helped |
Question: | would like to see black beauty flat wound short scale |
Answer: | That would be amazing! We have offered Black Beauty Round Wounds for Short Scale before. We are waiting for more to be manufactured but do not have a definite ETA. Coated Flats would be very very difficult to make. Flats are polished smooth after the flat ribbon wire is wound. Unfortunately if they were coated they would not be able to be polished so will not be nearly as sooth as a traditional flatwound. Maybe look at Black Nylon Tapewounds if you would like a black flat string. Jason FretNation |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does “Standard Long Scale” mean 34 or 35 inch scale |
Answer: | Long scale is generally 34" which is really considered standard now. Remember it doesn't really mean length of the neck but the distance from the nut to the bridge |
Question: | Will these strings work on a UBass |
Answer: | I wouldn’t think so. These are, in many ways, identical to other electric bass strings. If a normal string doesn’t work than these wouldn’t. |
Question: | Are these strings short scale |
Answer: | No. They are long scale |
Question: | Are these flats? will they both fit and work well with the hofner ignition |
Answer: | They are not flat but rounds with a black nylon coating. They feel smother than flats and have nice deep tone. I'm not sure what scale length a Hofner is but I use them on a Rickenbacker 4004 which is 33.5 inch scale and I love them. |

Sweat, skin, dirt, and even air, for example, can do a lot of damage to your strings. And if you live in a hot, humid area, the moisture in the atmosphere can wreak total havoc on your strings’ tone life. But with Elixir Strings, you’re getting world-class protection that’s engineered to endure.
NANOWEB Coating
Redesigned specifically for bass guitars, our ultra-thin NANOWEB Coating allows our strings the smoothest, most traditional feel available from Elixir Strings without sacrificing the same tone-extending protection you’ve come to expect from our expert engineering. This thinner, nearly unnoticeable coating also keeps the strings sounding exactly how they should, ensuring minimal mellowing and a stellar presence that hits as hard as you need it to, whether on the stage or in the studio.
Coated Like No Other
Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. That’s why Elixir strings retain their tone longer than any other brand’s string, coated or uncoated. Simply put, build-up and corrosion kill your tone, and Elixir strings protect against elements that cause build-up and corrosion. All while sounding exactly how you’d expect a premium set of strings to sound.
Better Grip And Reduced Finger Squeak
Incredible tone. The perfect feel. Longer tone life than any other brand. What more could you ask for? Well, we’ve actually got two more innovative advantages to our coated strings for you to consider—decreased finger squeak and an incredible grip. Even with a coating so thin you can barely feel it, NANOWEB Coating cuts down on that annoying, shrill chirp for an unbelievably clean, seamless performance every time you play. And compared to other coatings, the made-for-bass NANOWEB Coating gives the string an enhanced grip, producing a playing experience that’s both consistent and comfortable.
