12 best acoustic guitar humidifiers

Acoustic guitar humidifiers are essential accessories for maintaining the proper humidity levels within the body of an acoustic guitar. These devices help prevent the adverse effects of dry conditions, which can lead to cracking, warping, and damage to the guitar. Here's what you need to know about acoustic guitar humidifiers:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a guitar humidifier is to maintain the ideal humidity level within the guitar's wooden body. Wood is sensitive to changes in humidity, and excessive dryness can cause the wood to shrink and crack, adversely affecting the instrument's playability and tone.

  2. Construction: Acoustic guitar humidifiers are typically made of materials that can hold and release moisture slowly. The most common types include:

    • Soundhole Humidifiers: These are small devices that are placed inside the guitar's soundhole. They usually consist of a plastic or rubber casing and a water-absorbing material like sponge or foam. They emit moisture directly into the guitar's body.

    • Soundhole Hygrometers: Some humidifiers come with built-in hygrometers to monitor the humidity level inside the guitar. This helps players keep track of conditions more accurately.

    • Humidifier Packs: These are small bags or pouches filled with a water-absorbing material, often gel or beads. They can be placed in the guitar case or between the strings and headstock to humidify the guitar.

  3. Usage: To use a guitar humidifier, you typically soak it in water (following the manufacturer's instructions), remove excess water to prevent dripping, and then place it in the guitar's soundhole, the case, or other designated areas. The humidifier slowly releases moisture into the air, helping to maintain the optimal humidity level for the guitar.

  4. Maintenance: Regularly check the humidifier to ensure it's still moist and functioning correctly. Rehydrate it as needed, and be mindful of over-humidification, which can also cause damage to the guitar.

  5. Seasonal Changes: Guitar humidifiers are especially important in regions with extreme seasonal humidity changes. In dry, winter months or arid climates, it's crucial to use a humidifier to prevent the guitar from drying out.

  6. Types of Wood: Different types of wood used in guitars have varying sensitivity to humidity changes. For example, solid wood guitars are more susceptible to humidity-related issues than laminated wood guitars. However, all acoustic guitars can benefit from proper humidification.

  7. Hygrometer: To ensure your guitar is in the right humidity range, consider using a hygrometer, a separate device that measures the humidity level. This can help you monitor and adjust the humidity as needed.

In summary, acoustic guitar humidifiers are essential tools for maintaining the health and longevity of your instrument. They help prevent dryness-induced damage by maintaining the correct humidity level, ensuring that your acoustic guitar continues to sound and play beautifully for years to come. Proper care and attention to humidity are key to preserving the condition and tone of your valuable instrument.

User questions & answers

Question: I just bought this and it really seems to stretch the strings out because it's so wide. Will this ruin the strings
Answer: I never put it in between my strings. I just set it between the edge of the hole and either of the E strings. It's a perfect fit and much easier.
Question: Will this fit a baby Martin
Answer: If the sound hole is 2 1/2" inches wide it should fit. You just press it down into the sound hole between two strings. It's not much more than a half inch wide. The tension created by separating the strings holds it in place.
Question: Slim enough for a twelve string Taylor
Answer: Yes, I have five of them and one is on a 12-string.
Question: Has anyone measured the interior humidity of their case, i.e. how effective are these things
Answer: Haven't measured humidity, but my Martin Smith guitar requires 2 soaked devices and at least 24 hours, once fret buzz shows up. Once the buzz be gone, I can get by with one.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with the humidifying packs
Answer: Yes, the humidifying packs are pictured on the box. Two fabric holders are sent to suspend the packs inside your guitar. Of course, you must keep your guitar in a relatively air-tight case for the system to work. The packs are designed to keep the relative humidity between the recommended 45 to 55 percent. I use a room humidity gauge to determine whether the packs are needed.
Question: I have been using these for 10 months and they are still not dried out. Can they last that long
Answer: Yes, depending on the environment the guitar is kept. Although I don’t wait until the packets turn to stone before changing them. I usually change the packets when they feel a bit crunchy.
Question: Can I use this in an electric acoustic guitar
Answer: This product is for use in any hollow body guitar, especially during the Winter months when the heat is on and the wood tends to dry out. You MUST use a humidifier to keep the wood (especially the guitar top) of your instrument from cracking. I use this D'Addario humidifier on my custom but D-45 with excellent results.
Question: Can you reuse the packs, like after they get hard could you put them in a humid environment and re humidify them
Answer: Yes they can. I have been using these for years and I rotate between sets. One set is in the instrument case while the other is recharging. To recharge, get two Tupperware containers one large and one small. The smaller one (without its lid) needs to fit into the large one so that its lid can be closed. Add about 1/2 inch of water to the larger container and put the packs needed to be recharged in the smaller one, put the smaller container in the larger one and seal it. It takes about 2-3 weeks to recharge a pack that's hardened into new condition. I use humidity meters in the cases to spot check and there is no difference between a new humidipak and a recharged one. If you get the packets wet BTW, the gig is up. You have to throw them out and replace them. I get 2-3 years of service from a set of 3 before they start to fall apart. I live in Ohio BTW, so I only need them for half the year.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product have any possibility of leaking out the vent holes on the sides? I keep my guitar in its case standing almost upright leaning the
Answer: The humidifier works great, accept when you place it in a case, the case interior will absorp moisture. Buy a stand for $15.00 and squeeze out excessive water.
Question: Can you hang the guitar on the wall with this in it
Answer: If you set it properly then that should work. I'm not sure why you would want to though - it works best if you keep the guitar in the case. When I hang the guitar on a wall then I make sure the whole room is properly humidified.
Question: How much water do you add
Answer: I normally take the sponge out of the holder and soak it in a glass of water while I’m playing. When I’m done I remove the sponge from the glass and shake off the excess water. I then gently pat the sponge with a towel to remove any surface water before it put it back in it’s holder. This way no water can drip in my guitar.
Question: How long do you soak the sponge in the planet wave gap guitar humidifier? The sponge doesn't seem to soften
Answer: It takes about 30 mins. But put something over it to make sure it is completly submerged in water.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this in a guitar that is in it's case standing vertical on it's side
Answer: Interesting. I think you mean to put the humidifier in the Strings and store the case in different positions? Yep. I think that works. You know, I didn’t feel good about pushing this into the strings and I decided to place the humidifier in the case somewhere. It works but maybe wrap it in a thin cloth so it doesn’t rattle around free and mark your nice guitar. I highly recommend calling them as I did. ( I got a sponge that was a little big). They are extremely nice and would answer all of your questions. I think I like this the best of all the humidifiers. I go the ones that were in a pack that would take away or give proper humidity. They claim that the packages are rarely broken and leak. Well, I got the “ rarely”. These are just distilled water. Much better.
Question: Can you run the sponge under the tap or do you need to physically submerge the whole thing
Answer: You need to submerge the sponge so it's fully saturated, BUT - don't use tap water!! Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use DISTILLED water to help prevent mold on the sponge. :)
Question: Does the guitar need to be flat, or can it be in a stand
Answer: I had the same concern when I first bought this, and kept the guitar flat. After a few uses, I trusted the Humitar brand sponge enough to use it with the guitar standing upright, but I always make sure that the sponge isn't dripping wet when I do so - I shake the sponge a few times, and then hold it above a dish or something to make sure it's not dripping, then I install it in the sound hole of my guitar - haven't had any issues. Of course, either way, you want to keep your guitar in it's case (or gig bag) when you use the Humitar. :)
Question: I have 3. Worked fine for about a year, but then got black spots & guess its mold. I use distilled water. Anyone have this
Answer: I think the number one rule is to follow the manufacturer's instructions and use DISTILLED water (not tap). Since you say you used distilled water, I also suspect that some people may handle the sponge with less than clean hands and/or they rest the sponge on a less than clean surface. This may be overkill, but lately, before I re-hydrate these sponges, I put them on a clean paper towel, wash my hands, don a pair of vinyl gloves, and then re-wet, shake off the excess water, then insert the sponge back into the holder and place in the sound hole. I own several Humitars, the first one was purchased in 2015, and knock wood (ha-ha) I have yet to experience a mold issue. :)

O Oasis Humidifier for acoustic guitars (OH-5)

O Oasis

Based on 481 reviews Check latest price

Product description

OASIS OH-5 PLUS+ GUITAR HUMIDIFIER FOR ACOUSTIC GUITARS SOUNDHOLE While the original Blue Oasis provides sufficient humidity in many environments, it is not effective everywhere. The humidity demands of the desert, mountain states or frigid north exceed the humidification capacity of the OH-1. For this reason, we have developed the OH-5 Plus+ humidifier. The OH-5 Plus+ is the same size and shape as the original blue Oasis, but is has a different liner which provides 50% more humidity output. Because the OH-5 Plus+ is the same size as the original Blue Oasis and it has 50% greater humidity output, it will be necessary to refill the Oasis OH-5 Plus+ more frequently than the original Blue Oasis. Use the OH-5 when the environment outside the case has a relative humidity of 25% or less. Each OH-5 comes with a stabilizer bar for mounting the OH-5 humidifier and a 10 cc syringe for distilled water filling control. > Because tap and bottled water have dissolved minerals that can clog the liner, distilled water is recommended to extend the useful life of your humidifier < Set includes: 1x Oasis OH-5 Plus+ Guitar Humidifier for Soundhole OASIS - MADE IN USA

  • FOR YOU: 1x Oasis OH-5 Plus+ Guitar Humidifier
  • YOUR USE: Gives the humidification to your instrument it needs in dry seasons
  • YOUR PERFORMANCE: Designed for soundholes to maintain humidity inside the guitar body
  • BEST MATERIALS: Comes with a stabilizer bar for mounting the humidifier and a 10 cc. syringe for distilled water filling control
  • BEST QUALITY: Safe and effective desgin - Made in USA

User questions & answers

Question: does this come with the syringe or do I have to buy that separate
Answer: The initial purchase comes with the humidifier already loaded with the proper amount of crystals and the syringe. So you get all you need for your first season. If you buy the Oasis refill crystals, you get several seasons worth of crystals along with a little spoon and another syringe. Soon, you'll have quite a collection of syringes.
Question: Would it damage Acoustic electric
Answer: As long as you use it correctly, no, it should not damage an acoustic electric guitar.
Question: My oasis oh-5 doesn't shrivel up as it dries out. has anyone else had this happen
Answer: Nope, I have never had that happen. Mine "shrivels" on a regular basis.
Question: What is the difference betewwn the tan colored oh-5 plus+ and the blue oasis humidifier
Answer: The blue Oasis humidifer has a metal clip that attaches to the side for attaching to case and is used mainly for violins, violas, cellos, mandolins, ukuleles, & jazz guitars. The Tan one has a attachment at the top the yellow part that easily goes between the acoustic guitar strings in the sound hole. I have two of the tan ones and after trying several it by far is the best. I don't have to worry about over leakage going into my guitar body with the Oasis OH-5 Plus+ humidifier. I think by far the best on the market and it does a super job. I bought the Oasis humidifier plus the Hygrometer which I just set in my case nearest to the sound hole and it works really well. The humidifier comes with a easy fill tube so theirs no guess work and no over spillage. Plus mine last anywhere from 3-4 days between fill and no guesswork their either when it shrivels up time for refill unlike most of the other humidifiers on the market. Have to change the beads when there ready for change but with a great product like that that is minor. My Martin guitar is an investment worth protecting.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the guitar have to lay flat on its back
Answer: There is a silicone clip to fix the humidifier on the guitar, and the humidifier is equipped with an absorbent sponge, so you can also use the humidifier without laying the guitar flat.
Question: What are the measurements of the unit? Will it work for a hollow body electric guitar
Answer: Guitar Humidifier : 3.4*2.1*1.5 inches. Not suitable for hollow electric guitars
Question: It clamps to the top of the guitar. Is there a possibility of it causing damage to the top of the guitar the way it clips on to the wood
Answer: Fyi.. I chose this product compared to others or another due to price. The other that's well-advertised is considerably more expensive. You made a good decision with this choice. I did not put it in the soundhole. didn't fit well at all right off. (Using a hard case) Instead, I used a small guitar cloth. Inserted it in the space curve towards the top of the body. Making a pocket and insert the humidifier in the pocket. Worked just fine. I've never used a humidifier till recently. Stumbled into an instruction video explaining. So I thought, OH WOW hope I haven't screwed up. So I purchased it. The humidity level measured much higher than recommended. I removed it from the case. Turns out here in the North West we have above normal levels almost year-round. Don't need it. In desert type region hell ya ya needed. I'm just grateful I didn't damage my expense Ovasion acustic electric...

User questions & answers

Question: How do you get it out of the guitar? Like trying to shake out a lost flat pick
Answer: Yes
Question: Will this product work for a ukulele
Answer: No.Sorry.
Question: I have a hybrid Taylor t5 and no humidifier can be fit inside. Would this do to just “tie” around a neck inside a case. The guitar is pretty dry
Answer: Roughly every 7 to 14 days. Everything is going to depend on how dry the area that you are storing your guitars is and what if anything you are storing them in. My hard case holds onto the moisture better than my gig bag. So I have to rewet the one in the gig bag more frequently.
Question: Would this humidifier work as well if were in the case as opposed to inside of the guitar? I need to keep my guitar between 40%-60% RH
Answer: Yes. It actually requires a separate speaker cabinet. But it must be and 8 ohm cabinet. It can support 16 ohm as well per the spec, but it states not connect to a load lower than 8ohm. Also I should note, this is a great little amp. It is tiny but packs a great punch. Hope this helps. Danny

Our Story

Ten years later, Steve’s personal humidifier – the original Wet Willy – is still going strong, which is a testament to his concept. Today with patent pending, the PET-1 Acoustic Guitar Humidifier has been born.

The PET-1 guitar humidifier is a thing of simplistic beauty with continuing efficacy – the humidifier that after 10 years in development does exactly what it says on the pack. There is nothing to replace, nothing to lose, nothing to break and completely leak free, which is why we offer life long peace of mind with every one you purchase.

So we say to you – let there be guitar and may you rock, roll, folk, strum, jive, country or whatever you’re into, forever more.

“I really, really love how easy it is, just put it in some water for 20 minutes, dry it off and plop it in your guitar and you can even play your guitar with it in.” - Jennifer Mlott, Multi Award Winning Indie Artist

Soak it first…

  • Remove the plastic fastener holding the PET-1 together.
  • Gently manipulate the outer shell allowing the polymer core
to move toward the center of the PET-1, making sure none of the polymer is near either end.
  • Using clean tap water, fill a container that’s large enough for the
PET-1 to LAY FLAT. and submerge for approximately 25 minutes.
  • Rest for 10 minutes. This will allow the polymer to absorb
any residual water, safely locking it into the core as a solid.

The PET-1, simple in design uses high tech materials and should not be squeezed. The polymer core consists of a set of polymeric chains that are parallel to each other and are regularly linked to each other by cross-linking agents forming a network. When water comes into contact with one of these chains, it is drawn into the molecule by osmosis. Water then rapidly migrates into the interior of the polymer network where it is stored as a solid. Resting allows the chains to lock water into its internal structure making it LEAK FREE.

Then Dry it…

  • Gently dry the monofilament outer shell with a cloth.
  • The polymer core is a hi-tech absorbent – not a sponge. DO NOT SQUEEZE OR WRING OUT the PET-1 when handling.
  • Excessive pressure can cause the polymer to extrude. Rarely, extrusion can occur on first hydration. If this happens, wipe away residue.

Slip it in the Sound Hole or next to your headstock…

  • You’re done! Now you can start humidifying!
  • Insert the PET-1 into the sound hole of your guitar, and
humidify while you play.
  • OR, place at the headstock in your case with a hygrometer at the sound hole
  • Ensure your guitar case is clean and free from any bacteria or mould spores.

Taking it out is eazy peazy…

  • Over time the PET-1 will shrink back in size, indicating that it is time to rehydrate.
  • Remove by turning your guitar upside down and gently rotating the body until the PET-1 appears at the sound hole.
