4 best guitar capo for banjo ukuleles
A guitar capo is a device used to change the pitch of the strings on a guitar by clamping down across the fretboard. This allows the player to play in different keys while using open chord shapes. While guitar capos are primarily designed for guitars, they can also be used on other similar instruments like banjos and ukuleles. Here's what you need to know about using a capo for banjos and ukuleles:
Function:
- A capo essentially shortens the vibrating length of the strings, which raises the pitch.
- This enables the player to transpose songs to higher keys without changing the fingering positions.
Types:
- Spring-Loaded Capos: These are the most common type. They have a spring mechanism that allows for easy placement and removal.
- Trigger Capos: These use a trigger-like mechanism for quick changes.
- Screw Capos: These have a screw to adjust the tension for a customized fit.
Compatibility with Banjos and Ukuleles:
- While capos are primarily designed for guitars, they can also be used on banjos and ukuleles, especially if they have a similar neck profile and string spacing.
Placement:
- The capo is placed across the desired fret, just like placing a barre chord. It presses down on all the strings at that fret.
Effect on Sound:
- Using a capo can result in a brighter, jangly sound, as it brings the pitch higher and tightens the strings.
Choosing the Right Capo:
- Ensure that the capo you choose is suitable for the neck profile and string spacing of your banjo or ukulele.
- Some capos are designed specifically for these instruments and may have features tailored to their unique requirements.
Benefits:
- Simplifies chord progressions: Using a capo can make complex chord progressions easier to play, especially in keys that are difficult on open strings.
- Expands tonal range: It allows for a wider range of keys and tonal possibilities.
Considerations:
- Tuning Stability: Using a capo can sometimes affect the tuning stability of an instrument.Make sure to retune after applying the capo.
- String Buzz: Improper placement of a capo can lead to unwanted buzzing. Ensure it's properly seated and all strings are pressed evenly.
Experimentation:
- Musicians often experiment with capo placement to achieve different tonal qualities and to match the vocal range of a singer.
Remember, using a capo is a versatile technique that can greatly expand your playing possibilities. It's a valuable tool for any guitarist, banjo player, or ukulele player looking to explore different keys and arrangements.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this work on a left handed guitar too |
Answer: | Hi Thank you for being interested in this strap. It is a cotton guitar strap. Genuine Leather Ends & comfortable Strap suitable for electric ,acoustic guitars, bass. Hoping you like it ! |
Question: | These capos are wide. I want a quick change capo for my banjo and small neck 6 string guitar without the extra width hanging down in the way. Help |
Answer: | No. Good strap but no guitar locks. Comes with what the picture shows. |
Question: | Can these be used as partial capos, as in the bottom four or top five (Drop D simulation |
Answer: | Yes, the rubber washers safety locks are included in the package. |
Question: | Do these work well with 12 string guitars |
Answer: | The two black washers shown in the picture are actually rubber and serve as 'strap locks' and they work well when applicable. However, the strap end material is so thick that there is not enough room on strap button of my guitar for both strap and lock. That said, that thick strap end isn't going anywhere (unless you're thinking of doing some acrobatics?) ! The woven edge of the strap is more comfortable than vinyl or leather where it rubs against your neck when you're not wearing a collar. |
