11 best drum heads
Drum heads, also known as drum skins, are essential components of a drum set or percussion instrument. They play a crucial role in shaping the sound and tone of the drums. Here is some information about drum heads in the context of Drum Set Accessories, Drum Percussion Accessories, Instrument Accessories, and Musical Instruments:
Purpose: Drum heads are stretched across the top (or sometimes the bottom) of a drum shell and are struck by drumsticks, mallets, or other percussion implements. They vibrate when struck, producing the sound of the drum.
Materials: Drum heads are typically made from one of two materials:
- Mylar or Plastic: Most modern drum heads are made from synthetic materials like Mylar. They are durable, consistent in tone, and less affected by changes in humidity compared to natural materials.
- Animal Skin: Some traditional drums, especially those used in world percussion, use animal skin, such as goat or calf, for drum heads. These natural heads offer unique tonal qualities and are favored for their authenticity in certain musical styles.
Types:
- Batter Head: This is the top head of a drum, the one that is struck to produce sound. It is responsible for the drum's primary tone.
- Resonant Head: The bottom head of the drum, which is often thinner and serves to shape the drum's sound, add depth, and create sustain.
- Snare Drum Head: A specialized head used on snare drums, designed to work with the snare wires to produce the distinctive snare drum sound.
Tension: Drum heads need to be tensioned properly to achieve the desired pitch and tone. Tension rods and tuning lugs are used to tighten or loosen the head. Different tension levels can produce various pitches and tones.
Sound and Tone Control: Drummers can control the sound of their drums by selecting the appropriate type of drum head and adjusting the tension. For example, a thicker head with higher tension will produce a sharper and brighter sound, while a thinner head with lower tension will result in a deeper and warmer tone.
Maintenance: Drum heads are subject to wear and tear, and they may need to be replaced periodically, depending on usage. Regular maintenance, such as tuning and dampening, can also affect the drum's sound.
Specialized Heads: Some drum heads are designed for specific styles of music or drumming techniques. For example, there are heads optimized for rock, jazz, orchestral, and electronic drumming.
Brand and Size: Drummers can choose from a wide range of drum head brands and sizes, each offering different characteristics and tonal qualities. The size of the drum head must match the drum shell's diameter.
In summary, drum heads are crucial components of drum sets and percussion instruments, influencing the sound, tone, and playability of the drums. Drummers can select from a variety of materials, types, and tension levels to achieve the desired sound for their musical style and preferences. Proper maintenance and tuning are essential for keeping drum heads in optimal condition for producing great music.

User questions & answers
Question: | Those heads are for snare, tom 1, tom 2 and floor tom |
Answer: | I wouldn't buy these (10"). Your probably thinking, like me, that these are a quality cymbals. After all their ZILDJAN!!! They probably are very good quality, it sounds, to me, like "tin/ trash can". If you like that sound, that's fine, but for me I prefer a crisper/chick/click sound. I returned them, spent 25-30 more and got Soultone Cymbals VNT-HHT10-10" Vintage Hi Hats Pair. Wow, what a difference! You won't be disappointed! |
Question: | Can i use these for a Sabian set |
Answer: | Hello Timothy. Yes, this cymbal is in the A Zildjian series, top hi hat only. Thank you for your interest! |
Question: | When replacing drum heads is it necessary to replace both top and bottom heads? I am a beginner just wanting to replaced worn heads on used set |
Answer: | It was just the top cymbal. |
Question: | Can i use those drumheads for this drum set? http://www.amazon.com/drum-complete-adult-cymbals-black/dp/b008j1teq8/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t |
Answer: | No theres is a subtle difference in the sound that you get. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between the clear and coated versions?i have g1 resonant heads, will these sound good combined? looking for that hard rock/metal |
Answer: | These aren't what you'd traditionally call "coated"..they're frosted, a thinner type of coating, making them translucent, but not 100% clear. More attack but less tone. I play rock/hard rock also, and use the clear ec2's with g1 clear reso's. |
Question: | Does it come with a set for the bottom of the drum |
Answer: | It does not come with them per say, but Evans does make resonant heads in that line. But you must buy those separately. |
Question: | is this the level |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Could I tune these to sound like the Toms from the openening of chop suey! By System of a Down, if I add some dampening / would I need dampening |
Answer: | Yes you could. These heads are meant for metal! Lots of punch, and durable asf! Dampening prolly on the floor tom if your by yourself. But in a band, I wouldn’t dampen anything but the bass drum. 🤘🏻 |

Question: | Los parches son de aceite |
Answer: | The coating is the same. The fusion title indicates the sizing of the heads included in the pack 10, 12, 14. Standard packs are 12, 13, 16. Rock or new fusion are typically 10, 12, 16. |
Question: | What heads are include in this package? And will they fit standard size drums |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | can these be used for both batter and resonate heads as the heads that came with the PDP-7 were the same |
Answer: | Can also vouch that they were coated. Amazon gets the picture wrong on a lot of things, and if you ask me, they don't know anything about drum gear, so you should make sure to go by the description, not what's in the picture. Hope that helps. |
Question: | are these complete sets tops and bottoms and do you have to buy the bass skins seperate |

User questions & answers
Question: | My toms are 10.5, 12.5, and 16.8 will these work |
Answer: | They cover both Tom toms floor Tom and snare |
Question: | are these level |
Answer: | Absolutely ... for a dryer sound, lower your bottom head: do not remove bottom head! The remo clear pinstripe are excellent for rock, praise and worship, and jazz. Be sure and get the frosted snare drum head. |
Question: | I notice it say Pack. Is it one of each size or two for both heads of a drum |
Answer: | I'm actually a beginner myself but played with them on and off and what a have found is that I like the sound better with the bottom heads off. It's a little work to get all of the nut holders off. Just do one, one of the toms, take the lower skin off and see if you like the sound better than the other Tom. |
Question: | How much would these resonant on 12 and 16 inch if I put a G1 clear on the 12 and 16 inch as reso heads |
Answer: | Some kits measure the diameter including the rim around the head. do not be fooled these are 10 inch, 12 inch and 16 inches. They are measuring the shell and rim at the widest part, not the size of the top surface of the drum head. but the layout is not common and will be hard to find 3 packs sold like that, i saw them in a few brands, but this is not a match for you. look for 10, 12 and 16. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the size of the hole |
Answer: | I'm not sure but I can just slide my beta sm 91 in there. Shure mic |
Question: | Is evans emad system pack, 22 inch comes in 2 pcs (front & back |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does it come with the hardware needed to attach to the base drum |
Answer: | It comes with a batter head and a ported front head but hardware. You would use the lugs and claws that are on your bass drum if you have them. |
Question: | I have a tension watch for my drum heads what should I tune this head to to play heavy metal |
Answer: | Loosen all the lugs first , then finger tighten all the lugs , push down on the rim with both hands and body weight in 4 different points , then finger tighten the lugs again . Once that is done 1/4 turn all the lugs than 1/4 turn all the lugs again . That what I do . If your personal preference is tighter than that use 1/4 turns only so you don't have the rim and the head seat uneven . If their is to much boom tighten the front head 1/4 turns and try it until the boom is gone or as close to gone as you can get it . I also have a pillow in it to soak up the sound . Hope this helps you . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the pedal come with the bass drum |
Answer: | I'm sorry..... I'm not trying to be rude here but you're kidding right? This is just the Bass Drum Head. The drum isn't included.... and the pedal is DEFINITELY not included. Even and inexpensive Bass drum is over $100 and a decent pedal about $50 used. Now as far as the EMAD goes.... It's a GREAT Bass Drum Head. I'd highly recommend that. Good Luck |
Question: | This isn't a resonat head is it |
Answer: | Nope. It’s a beater head. And it’s killer |
Question: | Is these a matte finish or glossy |
Answer: | The Onyx is matte finish..... looks great too. The black chrome is glossy...... but it will get marked up with sticks on the tom drums..... |
Question: | I'm converting a 22" kick to a side concert tom. Anyone know if this would be a good head choice? Thanks |
Answer: | Depends on what kinda sound you're aiming for. With the wide ring, it's dark and punchy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How's the response for this head - am thinking brushes, specifically. And when uptuned do you get a good "crack" from it |
Answer: | Yes, the manual shaver adopts a stainless steel blade and a rosewood handle. The razor has high hardness and is hand-polished. |
Question: | That drumhead is coated |
Answer: | Yes its quite detailed. However, the blade is extremely dull and a lot of work is needed to make it sharp. With that said mine is just sitting around. |
Question: | I have a pearl African mahoghany (13 inch) that I usally tune high for a good pop sound. Will this head accentuate or repress the pop |
Answer: | Steel |
Question: | Good reso head and snare wire to pair with this |
Answer: | The one displayed is what I got about 2 years ago. However the knive is low quality and don't plan on using it to shave. Mine is now used as bathroom decor. |
