9 best gypsy jazzs
Gypsy jazz, also known as "Manouche jazz" or "Jazz Manouche," is a style of music that originated in France in the early 20th century. It is closely associated with the Romani people, particularly the Sinti community, and is characterized by its unique blend of traditional Roma music, American jazz, and French chanson.
Here are some key features and information about gypsy jazz:
Instrumentation: Gypsy jazz is primarily played on acoustic instruments. The most iconic instrument in this genre is the Selmer-Maccaferri guitar, which has a distinctive oval-shaped soundhole and a small, deep body. Additionally, the violin, double bass, and sometimes accordion are commonly used in gypsy jazz bands.
Pioneers: The most famous figure associated with gypsy jazz is Django Reinhardt, a Belgian-born Romani guitarist. He is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time and a pioneer of the genre. His partnership with violinist Stéphane Grappelli in the Quintette du Hot Club de France is legendary.
Musical Characteristics: Gypsy jazz is known for its lively and virtuosic guitar solos, intricate rhythms, and improvisational style. It typically features a fast tempo and employs techniques like alternate picking and rapid arpeggios. The repertoire often includes jazz standards, traditional Roma melodies, and original compositions.
Rhythmic Foundation: The rhythm guitar in gypsy jazz plays a crucial role in providing a steady and percussive "pompe" or "la pompe" rhythm. This rhythmic pattern involves downstrokes on the off-beats, creating a driving and swinging groove.
Repertoire: Gypsy jazz draws from a diverse range of sources, including traditional Roma tunes, French chanson, and American jazz standards by composers like Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. Prominent compositions in the gypsy jazz repertoire include "Minor Swing" and "Nuages" by Django Reinhardt.
Modern Revival: While gypsy jazz experienced its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, it has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent decades. Musicians and bands worldwide continue to embrace this unique style, both preserving its traditions and adding contemporary elements.
Gypsy Jazz Festivals: There are several festivals dedicated to gypsy jazz, including the Django Reinhardt Festival in France and the Djangofest series in the United States. These events celebrate the genre's rich heritage and showcase talented musicians.
In summary, gypsy jazz is a captivating and spirited genre of music that combines elements of Roma tradition, American jazz, and French influence. It is characterized by its distinctive instrumentation, intricate guitar work, and infectious rhythms, with Django Reinhardt standing as one of its most iconic figures. This genre continues to thrive and inspire musicians and audiences around the world.

Gypsies, or more correctly, the Romany or Roma people, have always been nomadic, so it is no surprise that their music has been influenced at various times by Arabic, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Persian, Romanian, Serbian, Slavic, Spanish and Turkish musical idioms. Gypsy jazz has that rare quality of evoking a time and a place. So if you want to be transported back to the Paris of sixty years ago, then bon appetit.

Virtuoso renditions of Gypsy jazz classics, featuring the melodic chromatic harmonica jazz of David Naiditch, the fiery guitar lines of Gonzalo Bergara, and the unmatched 5-string banjo playing of the legendary Pat Cloud.
Review
On this most recent release from the stylistically-diverse chromatic harmonica master David Naiditch, he comes out swinging in his quintet with a spritely accordionesque tone, then he doubles, for a sound like horns, and then, finally, gives soaring string-like runs a la Grappelli. Suddenly Gonzalo Bergara comes in with a Django-esque cascade of guitar notes, above the Paris-cobblestone-solid solid rhythm section of Jeffrey Raidaich s guitar and Brian Netzley s bass, and in that first song you re transported to a manouche jam at a smokey cafe in the 14th arrondisement of Paris! When Pat Cloud s 5-string banjo chimes in to the mix, you re now in the provinces, with sunflowers and fresh red wine. With slight and tasty detours to the States for some Gershwin, and to Spain for a bossa nova, one arrives finally at Gonzalo s Castle, guitarist Bergara s stately, yet comfy-like-a- blanket, homage to the magical, cinematic world of Gypsy music. It s 2012, but it feels like a fresh day in 1936, what a treat! This is an album to play while you're - doing anything! Douce Ambience means sweet atmosphere, this is it. The whole ensemble is spot on and at ease, but it s the chromatic harmonica that really is at the core of this set. And although chromatic harp, in the hands of lesser players, can often sound like technical note-chasing, here Naiditch s easy, animated chromatic brings life to old classics and a few newer originals. If this album hasn t put you in a Douce Ambience, check your pulse! ---Dave Fertig, Pasadena

User questions & answers
Question: | Shouldn't this description include that it is a laminate top? On DjangoBooks this is clearly described as a laminate top but not here at all |
Answer: | In traditional musical instrument marketing when a laminate material is used in guitar construction, only the base wood material is listed. If the material was all solid, it would be listed as such...for example, Solid spuce vs. spruce. Original Selmer Gypsy Guitars all had laminate backs and sides with a solid top. You will see this is very common now that you know what to look for. Thanks for the question. |
Question: | Has anyone installed a pickup (either sound hole or inside) on this type of guitar |
Answer: | Based on the guitar design, the preferred pickup type is something designed into the Bridge. Big Tone is a brand name, for example. That said, keep in mind the guitar design and small soundhole is somewhat unusual, so most pickup system are creatively instituted based on the players needs and ingenuity. The www has many creative options, so feel free to explore what other interested Gypsy Players have done. Thanks for the question. |
Question: | Will strings from a Gypsy Jazz guitar work in a dreadnought acoustic guitar? What is the difference between them other than the look of the guitars |
Answer: | The strings might not hold due to them being designed for a classical style head, which has less tension than dreadnought. It'll probably give it a distinct sound that's fun to experiment with. You should definitely try it out, worst thing that could happen is a wasted $12. As for the guitars, the biggest difference, other than the gypsy guitar being beautifully light, is the variety of sounds you get. The way you play drastically changes the sound and volume. You can finger pick it softly and get nice Spanish, folky, surfy, bossa nova, americana, traditional, oldie, and indie sounds. You can play with a pick really hard, and get gypsy, blues, country, rock n roll, skiffle, r&b, jive, garage, psychedelic, drone, just about any sound. And when you play it loud, this baby booms. Even if you play it softly, the way the body is constructed amplifies the most subtle tones. Overall a purchase that's definitely worth it, even if you don't play gypsy music. |
