TOYS - Magnetic Scene

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but a moving magnetic scene tells a whole story! This project uses the power of magnetic fields to push a character around a scene, as if it has a life of its own. Put on your visionary goggles and clearly imagine your scene and the story you want to tell with it!

STRUCTURES - Suspension Bridge

Modern suspension bridges are a feat of engineering! The bridge deck, the part that people and vehicles travel on, is suspended from thick metal cables, which in turn are supported by tall towers. This project uses the same principles as a real suspension bridge, except all you need is some paper, cardboard, string, and straws! This is a big project, but with a little determination, you’ll have a strong and sturdy structure!

HOUSEHOLD INNOVATIONS - Handheld Vacuum

When I say, “You’ll make a vacuum cleaner,” I mean a real one! This project works just like a vacuum that you can buy at the store. It will be up to you to create, test, and evaluate the best possible filter for your vacuum so it can clean up just about anything. For once, you’ll be excited when you’re asked to clean your home!

Machines - Pneumatic Lift

Did you know you can lift incredibly heavy things using just air? It’s true! Pneumatic (new-ma-tik) means powered by air pressure, and it’s up to you to create a pneumatic-powered machine that can raise a load, like a plastic egg, as high as possible! However, like the crane, you’ll need to be determined to get your pneumatic machine in its best working order.

Safety Engineering - Spinning Ride

You’ve probably seen a spinning amusement park ride, like a Ferris wheel, scrambler ride, or a carousel. When scientists and engineers design those rides, the safety of the riders is the number one priority. Now it’s your turn to create your own visionary, high-speed spinning ride, and your goal is to make it super fun but also super safe for the riders!

Biomechanics - Grasshopper

Did you know that grasshoppers have a spring like mechanism in their knees? Their legs are like little catapults. They store potential elastic energy in their legs, and then release it all at once when they jump, just like a rubber band. In fact, you can use rubber bands to build your own high-jumping grasshopper. With some testing, redesigning, and reflection, yours could jump as much as 4 feet (122 cm) into the air!

User questions & answers

Question: How is it a "neck-thru" with a soundhole like that? Where's the rest of the neck
Answer: It just means that it’s not a bolt on neck.
Question: What is the scake length of this instrument
Answer: Merlin M4 nut to bridge on mine is 21 inches. 7 frets full octave with no blues fret. I put in a temporary blues fret at 5-1/2 with a cutdown paper clip and some bandage tape. Got to look out for string height at that position though so you don't mess up the whole note that lives at that spot.
Question: What is the difference between the SG and the M4 models
Answer: Sg is spruce and M4 is mahogany.
Question: How do you know if your Merlin is DAD or G tuning? i bought mine just about the time when Seagull changed it
Answer: The Merlin will have heavier (wound) strings - at least three. This is because the G tuning is lower. If your strings are more like those on a guitar, and your bass string is the only wound string, you have a dadd-type Merlin. Also, I believe that only the mahogany ones are G; I haven't seen on that was spruce.

Stick Dulcimer Strings for Seagull Merlin M4 (2 pack)

Product description

Two sets of high definition steel and phosphor bronze strings specifically designed for the Merlin by Godin (Seagull's parent company). Made in the USA.

Each string comes individually wrapped in a separate paper envelope to keep them separate and make it easier to identify which strings go where.

When replacing strings, be sure to replace one or two at a time, and avoid taking all of the strings off at once. Be sure to change your strings regularly to keep the instrument sounding bright and clear.

Seagull Merlin dulcimer strings sizes: .012 (2x) .016 .025

These are ball-end strings (like guitar strings). Standard Merlin tuning is DADD. This set of strings is for the DAD model, not the G model. These strings will not work on the G model Seagull Merlin. These are not the same type of strings that a pickin' stick or Strumstick variety stick dulcimer uses. Be sure you're purchasing the right item!

  • 2 pack of high definition steel and phosphor bronze strings for Merlin M4 stick dulcimer
  • Individually wrapped ball-end strings for DADD tuning
  • Each set contains 4 strings: .012 (2x) .016 .025
