12 best turntable mats
Turntable mats, also known as slipmats, are essential accessories for DJs and vinyl enthusiasts. These mats are placed on the turntable platter, providing a smooth and slip-resistant surface for vinyl records to rotate on. Turntable mats serve several purposes and are an integral part of DJ equipment and electronic music setups. Here's what you need to know about them:
Material:
Turntable mats are commonly made from various materials, including felt, rubber, cork, or acrylic. Each material offers different levels of slip resistance and damping characteristics, influencing the sound quality and overall performance.
Functionality:
Slip Resistance: Slipmats reduce friction between the vinyl record and the platter, allowing DJs to manipulate the record more easily. This slip resistance is crucial for beatmatching and scratching techniques.
Sound Damping: Turntable mats can dampen vibrations and resonance, leading to a cleaner sound output. This is especially important for audiophiles who want to minimize unwanted noise and improve sound quality.
Types of Turntable Mats:
Felt Slipmats: Felt slipmats are common and provide good slip resistance. They are popular among DJs for their smooth surface, allowing for precise scratching and mixing.
Rubber Slipmats: Rubber slipmats offer excellent grip and are often used in high-performance DJ setups. They are durable and provide a stable surface for vinyl records.
Cork Slipmats: Cork slipmats are known for their natural anti-static properties and sound dampening qualities. They are favored by audiophiles for their ability to reduce vibrations and enhance sound clarity.
Acrylic Slipmats: Acrylic slipmats are smooth and rigid, offering minimal friction. They are preferred by some DJs for their low-resistance surface, enabling fast and precise movements.
Considerations:
When choosing a turntable mat, DJs and vinyl enthusiasts consider factors like slip resistance, durability, and the specific techniques they plan to use. Additionally, the mat's thickness can affect the turntable's tonearm height, which is an important consideration for proper tracking of the stylus on the vinyl.
In summary, turntable mats, or slipmats, are vital accessories for DJs and vinyl enthusiasts, providing slip resistance, sound dampening, and stability during performances. The choice of material and type depends on individual preferences and specific DJ techniques.

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between this one and the 2nd up on amazon |
Answer: | The one I am familiar with is the Hudson cork mat. Two things you need to know, 1. Hudson really stands behind their product. I received a damaged one, called them and it was replaced in one day. Their customer service is absolutely top shelf! 2. The mat itself is very well constructed, perfect cut, visually extremely nice, and they were a pleasure to deal with, GREAT company. |
Question: | does it leave little pieces of cork on the lp |
Answer: | will not |
Question: | Can or should you remove the old mat |
Answer: | The old mat should be removed, and replaced with the new platter mat |
Question: | Reviews are confusing. How can this both reduce and create static |
Answer: | Cork itself is non-conductive, so it will not cause static. Unlike felt mats that do attract dust and static. -While no platter mat will ever eliminate static, it is a great step to reduce static as it is non-conductive. -Static will not be caused by a cork mat, if by chance there is static, which is a common problem, the source of the problem is generally the room (a rug can cause static build up). If static still occurs with a cork mat, you should consider a product like the Milty ZeroStat Gun: https://www.amazon.com/Milty-5036694022153-Zerostat-Anti-Static-Blue/dp/B0033SHDSS |

CoRkErY Recessed Turntable Platter Mat | Audiophile Anti-Static Slipmat | 1/8" Recessed
- Soft and Durable Material: Gentle on your treasured vinyl records
- Keeps dust away: Corkery doesn't attract dust and is easy to clean. Dust particles can be brushed off easily, preventing them from building up on your vinyl records. Dust and debris collect in the groves of vinyl records and even a little dust or static electricity can heavily impact sound quality.
- Reduces Static Load: When records are played, static electricity is created which causes crackling and static noise, as well as attracting dust. The slip mats can be placed directly on the platter, with the inherent properties of cork and rubber static loads can be reduced.
*Please note platter mats are not intended to fix or eliminate static issues. While a platter mat can reduce static, please use products like the "Milty Pro Zerostat 3 anti-static gun" to completely remove static.
Proprietary Cork Composite
The composite layer absorbs resonances and vibrations so our cork and rubber turntable mat will provide sonic improvement across the board. You will experience cleaner background and sharper imaging, improved dynamic range, and tighter bass response.
As this uses a composite cork granule with a rubber mix these mats are harder wearing than a standard cork mat.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions? i have an at lp-120 and just want to make sure i'll still be able to close the lid |
Answer: | It will fit under the lid of the LP-120, but it doesn't fit onto my LP-120 spindle. |
Question: | Does it have felt on the bottom or something to prevent from scratching |
Answer: | The weight comes in a black powdercoated finish. Although I have not scratched any records using the weight some of my friends simply stick on felt pads at a cost of >$2 |
Question: | Is this a clamp or just a weight |
Answer: | Just a weight. I was very skeptical of whether it would improve the sound, but after 5 weeks and countless hours listening, I love it! In my setup, it tightens the bass. Without the weight, the bottom end is a bit muffled (hard to distinguish one bass instrument from another if both are being played at the same time). With the weight, however, I can easily distinguish the bass guitar from the bass drum, from the bottom end of the synth, etc... Easy enough to return should you decide you do not like it:) |
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | After prototyping numerous weight variations we found the optimal weight for the BigBen: 13oz, 368.544 grams |

Product description
After getting fed up with dust and static spoiling my audio experience, I decided to do something about it. The factory rubber and felt mats seemed to contribute to the problem, so I began a search for a new material. After much experimentation, I found my answer. Deer hide. It is fantastic! So supple and buttery soft. Not only is my static gone, but the bass response is enhanced and there is additional sound dampening from the motor, as well. The overwhelming majority of reviewers (myself included) even swear it makes their records sound better. I hand cut each piece which enables me to work around natural flaws, bumps, nicks, and fluctuations in thickness to create a uniform, defect free mat. I punch the center hole slightly smaller to create a tight fit warding off any mat slippage. With my setup, I like to use the leather grain side up. Through this process, I believe I’ve found what works best, and most importantly, what SOUNDS best. All leather is not created equally. Hides vary in quality, thickness, feel etc. I've made it my mission to find the best hides for our audio purposes. I emphasize that I use deer hide because it is twice as expensive per square foot than the leather used for some other cheaper turntable mats I’ve seen. I would much rather explain the price of my mats than apologize for the quality. Like the Model T Ford, you can have any color you want so long as it's black. ( I am actually doing a very limited run of chocolate brown. I found a gorgeous hide that looks especially great on wood paneled turntables). The mats fit nicely on all 12" platters. Compatible with Rega, Linn, Music Hall, Avid, Pro-Ject, VPI, Audio-Technics, Jensen, Thorens, Garrard, Micro Seiki etc. When you order a turntable mat from me, what you're getting is a beautiful, handcrafted piece of material which will not only help eliminate dust and static issues, but also improve fidelity. Thanks for looking! Jake

User questions & answers
Question: | Stupid question. Do you put this on top of the existing mat (that came with the table) or replace the existing mat |
Answer: | You replace the existing mat... I did so because the original mat was warped, if you get this leather mat, you won't be disappointed, I'm very happy with my purchase, |
Question: | The Technics SL1200 turntable platter has a raised outer ridge. Does this mat fit within this raised ridge, the way the stock mat does |
Answer: | Some Technics though have a slightly undersized platter and a surrounding lip. The SL-DL1 linear table, for example, has a lip with a diameter of about 11.5". So this leather mat would be a tad too big for that table. Pity. |
Question: | Hi. my felt mat often sticks to my lp's due to static electricity. i'd buy this one to elevate this, certain it would? thx |
Answer: | My previous felt mat stuck approximately 75% of the time. After buying this mat, the average dropped to about 10% of the time or less. Seems less dusty too. |
Question: | Will this be the last slipmat I will ever buy |
Answer: | Nah, you'll buy a couple more of these for friends. |
- Premium precision crafted leather construction
- Upgraded platter mat with unique sound characteristics
- Dampens resonance from metal turntable platters
- Reduces noise and static load
- Can be used on any turntable with 12" platter
User questions & answers
Question: | Is it working for clearaudio concept |
Answer: | It should work well to dampen excess vibration and noise. It worked really well for my project carbon 3...that's a turntable in the same price range as the concept. |
Question: | In the area where I live, static electricity is a big issue. Will this leather mat work as good as a cork mat for improving the static charge level |
Answer: | One customers very helpful response to this question previously: "After doing your laundry load in the dryer, take your dryer sheet fabric (make sure it's a used one so all the stuff is off of it) and place it between your platter and your matt. The dryer sheet takes care of the static :) I did this on my Pro-Ject cause the fabric platter matt they sent with it clung to everything. After doing the dryer sheet trick, never stuck to another record again. This isn't the problem of the matt, it's simply a problem with static electricity, it'll happen to anything. If it's that dry in your record room you might wanna get a humidifier to moisten up the atmosphere a bit so static isn't such a problem." |
Question: | which animal's leather is this |
Answer: | Personally, I wouldn’t know for sure. I haven’t see anything saying where the leather was sourced. My best guess is Deer or Caribou. |
Question: | How thick/thin is tis mat |
Answer: | David, I measured the mat with a set of calipers and found the thickness to be 1.7 mm or 0.067 inches thick. So far I like the mat better than the foam style mats. I have an old Acoustic Research AR-XA manual turntable from the '60s that is still functioning. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which side should I use and what’s the difference |
Answer: | Use the side with the circular cut out. The difference is unknown, contact the Manufacturer or look at the instruction if any. |
Question: | So you do need to take the rubber mat off? It’s a little thinner not sure if that effects to earn angle |
Answer: | Yes, it is a little thinner toward the spindle and it fits perfectly right over the original rubber mat. I have a fantastic vintage Realistic turntable that was the best you could buy during the late 70's. The mat does eliminate most of the static but not all of it. It really does help though and it looks very nice. After seeing my setup my son also bought the same cork mat and he really likes it. My hearing isn't as good anymore (too many concerts) and he said that the cork mat also improves the sound of the albums. |
Question: | Will this work with a Pioneer PL |
Answer: | Yes. You first need to remove the rubber mat on the Pioneer and this one should be fine. I bought it because my new t.t. came with a felt mat that I didn't care for. Good luck. |
Question: | Would painting or drawing on this mat impact it's effectiveness? Any paint that would build up would obviously be bad, but what about pen or marker |
Answer: | i suppose you could do pen or marker but i wouldn't do it ....it's the build up in the vinyl you worry about |

Answer: | Hi. To be honest I wouldn’t see why not. I got this mat for an all in one I had gotten for Christmas. It covers the whole platter. |

Answer: | Rib side up. The center inner circle is recessed for the label. This also makes it easier to pick the 45 records up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What color is the mat |
Answer: | dark brown looks good |
Question: | Thickness in millimeters |
Answer: | Around 3 mm |
Question: | What is the exact thickness |
Answer: | 3mm thick |
Question: | Does anyone know the exact diameter |
Answer: | 17.48 mm or 11 13/16 inches |
Question: | Does this sit on top the rubber mat that came with my record player, or just totally in place of |
Answer: | Replaces it. Should sit on top of the metal platter. FYI type of mat impacts sound quality. I bought this because my original was old and needed replacing - it was expelling an oily substance that would ruin my records. It was rubber and I preferred its sound over this new acrylic one, which is still good and in my price range. It is all a matter of preferences - I feel rubber gives better bass. This is not a slip mat used by DJs for back que and scratching. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you stack two of these or will the indentations of the mat create a gap between two |
Answer: | I wouldn't advise it. There will certainly be a gap between the two (the bottom is ribbed) which would likely induce undesirable static charges. |
Question: | What is the back side of this mat? Is it flat |
Answer: | No, it has about 5 or 6 ribs and channels running radially around the backside to provide support. |
Question: | What is the width of the mat |
Answer: | It is as big as an LP. 12". |
Question: | Will this fit at lp |
Answer: | A turntable platter size is very standardized. That is why all LPs can fit on all turntables. Same goes for the platter mat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Got this recently & noticed that sounds get warped while the record is spinning while this is in place. Mat was squished/not flat could that be it |
Answer: | It works fine for me I definitely does a better job than the original mat I got from project... Mine is flat though.. |
Question: | Is this a 2mm slipmat? 12.8 x 12.5 x 0.2 inches |
Answer: | Not completely certain. It looks to be, it does hold a lot of static. Almost every time it comes up with the record. I really enjoy seeing it under the translucent vinyls though. |
Question: | Does it come with 2 slipmats |
Answer: | Mine came with 1. |
