13 best vocal pedals

Vocal pedals, also known as vocal effects processors or processors, are electronic devices used by singers and musicians to alter or enhance the sound of their voices in live performances or studio recordings. These pedals are a crucial part of a musician's toolkit, especially for those who want to experiment with different vocal effects.

Some common types of vocal pedals include:

  1. Loopers and Samplers: These allow a singer to record a section of their performance and then play it back in a loop. This can create layered harmonies or enable a solo performer to build up a full arrangement.

  2. Single Effects: These are individual pedals that apply specific effects to a vocal signal. Examples include reverb, delay, chorus, and pitch correction.

  3. Electric Guitar Effects: While primarily designed for guitars, many electric guitar effects pedals can be used with vocals. For example, distortion or overdrive effects can add a gritty edge to a vocal performance.

  4. Amplifier Effects: These pedals are designed to work in conjunction with amplifiers, providing additional control over the tone and sound of the amplified signal.

Vocal pedals are used by a wide range of musicians, from solo artists looking to add depth to their performance to bands aiming to create unique and experimental sounds.

It's important for musicians to choose vocal pedals that complement their style and needs. Experimenting with different combinations of effects can lead to innovative and distinctive sounds.Keep in mind that the effectiveness of a vocal pedal can also depend on factors like the type of microphone being used and the acoustics of the performance space.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with mic stand mount
Answer: No, there is no mount included.
Question: Volume is a power amp (output) function where as Gain is a pre amp (input) function. Is the knob below phantom power switch gain, not volume control
Answer: The knob below the phantom power switch is a volume knob that controls the mic input volume.
Question: Can you hook this up to a goxlr, to potentially further enhance your voices
Answer: A second method is to connect the 1/4"(L) and 1/4"(R) Output (line outs) from the Zoom V3 with an intermediary, impedance matching device, such as a Whirlwind pcDI box or similar, thus convert the two line outs from the Zoom V3 into a pair of XLR outputs, one of which can be passed on to the XLR microphone input on the GoXLR. This second method can be used to connect a Zoom V3 to a Zoom P8.
Question: How long do the batteries usually last
Answer: On four AA batteries the device will power for about 3.5 hours.

Question: Will the atmosphere fit into the space provided by the behringer pb1000 pedalboard which is designed to fit boss & behringer pedals

User questions & answers

Question: Can i also use this with my keyboard? i do play piano, not guitar. could i use this
Answer: I've used the BOSS VE-20 Vocal Processor with an Aerophone AE10, a wind-controlled, digital synth instrument, using a simple 1/4 in. cable connection, all effects coming through with no issues. If that combo works with the (junior) VE20, then I'm assuming it would also work with this item.
Question: What voltage(s) does this support
Answer: It uses a 9VDC 0.5 A supply. However Boss states that you should use their Boss PSA power supply.
Question: Can i output 1 xlr cable, or do i have to output 2 into a mixer
Answer: You can use just one XLR cable to the mixer, just make sure that you have the effects set to mono or you'll lose part of the output signal.
Question: In the manual on page 18 it says "view the 'parameter guide' and 'midi implementation chart' (pdf)" - where is the 'midi implementation chart' pdf

User questions & answers

Question: Is the large black rectangle in photos a Foot Switch
Answer: Yes. That turns the effects or off
Question: I have a boss acoustic preamp with 2 outputs. Can I send one to this pedal and one to my mixer or does the instrument have to pass through
Answer: Sorry for the late reply! You can definitely send the pre-amp signal to this pedal; I use a Fishman Model G (old school) pre-amp coming out of my Ibanez acoustic. I gig regularly and don't have a great voice but do backing vocals for my wife. This definitely adds a lot of color to my harmonies and it also pitch corrects. A bit of advice: go for the extra power adapter which does NOT come with the pedal. This thing will eat batteries like you wouldn't believe and if you forget to shut it off, they're toast! Get the DC adapter and never worry about it!
Question: if you don't plug in a guitar, how do you differentiate between minor / major harmonies
Answer: All you need is the Major keys. Use your music theory to determine the relative minor/major relationship. ie: Am is also C Maj, Em is also G Maj etc.
Question: Unit supplies +48v to mic and output goes to mixer. mixer also supplies +48v to all mic input. will there be a conflict and damage mixer and ve
Answer: I've never used mine with phantom power but if you intend on doing so I would suggest allowing the VE-2 to supply the power to your condensor mic and then run the XLR output of the VE-2 to a regular mic input on your PA.

JHS Pedals Colour Box V2 Preamp Guitar Effects Pedal (CBOXV2)

JHS Pedals

Based on 30 reviews Check latest price

Product description

In 2012, I had a crazy idea for a tone shaping device that had never been done before in the world of guitar pedals. I wanted to create an effects pedal that replicated the hard to achieve sounds of "direct-in" electric guitar recordings that I loved. Bands like the Beatles, Spoon, WIlco, and Steely Dan had used this technique for years, but it was nearly impossible to recreate live. I wanted this pedal to transform my guitar rig into the tonal equivalent of a Neve studio console, and that was no small task. After lots of trial and error, experimentation, and re-works, this concept evolved into something far beyond what we had imagined. In 2014 as we filmed the first demo videos at Abbey Road Studios in London and this idea had evolved into the most unique product we had ever made. The Colour Box was a full-fledged studio-grade preamplifier, EQ, and distortion generator with multi-instrument compatibility. It did what I had always wanted it to do, but it did so much more! On its release day, I wasn't quite sure how it would be accepted, but I knew that I loved it. As a few months went by, we saw something amazing begin to happen; this pedal was showing up in all types of environments. Producers, engineers, and artists were emailing us, tagging us on socials and showing how they had put the Colour Box to use. Studio vocals, live vocals, kick drums, acoustic guitars, bass, keys, overhead drums, stereo bus's, room mics, synths, re-amps, and some incredibly large stage setups had it on almost every instrument! This unit can be heard on dozens of recordings from U2, Wilco, Beck, Mac DeMarco, St. Vincent, The National, Spoon, Collective Soul, Muse, to War on Drugs, Foo Fighters, and Phantogram amongst others. As proud of this pedal as we were, we wanted to make it better, so we did. – Josh Scott The Colour Box V2 has all the same functionality of the V1 with many new and improved additions like expanded EQ controls, a Hi/Lo switch for massive clean headroom, and the ability to pass phantom power to your condenser mics. The most significant improvements are: Addition of an Output transformer Safely Passes 48v Phantom Power EQ Shift Knobs for precision EQ control Hi/Lo Switch for ultra clean headroom 100% available clean signal even on acoustic guitar Silent switching, aka no "switch-pop" Runs on standard 9V DC Neg power Let's take a look at the features and controls of the Colour Box V2. The Gain section in red has three controls: Master, Pre-Vol, and Step. The Master volume controls the overall volume of the unit. The Pre-Vol controls the amount of gain between the two internal gain stages. This acts as a "drive" or "gain" control, adding more grit, distortion, and even fuzz as you increase the gain. The Step control increases the gain of each preamp stage in five stages. Rotating the Step knob from left-to-right will increase the gain by the following: 1st is +18 dB, 2nd is +23 dB, 3rd is +28 dB, 4th is +33 dB, 5th is +39 dB. The Colour Box V2 has a new Hi / Lo switch to control the amount of clean headroom you have available. In the Lo mode, you will easily be able to get ultra clean sounds without breakup. Lo Mode is excellent for tone shaping when distortion is not needed. In the Hi mode, the Colour Box V2 will distort much more readily, giving you a broad spectrum of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz sounds. In addition to the Hi / Lo gain switch, there is a -20dB pad switch on the right side of the Colour Box V2. This function only works when in XLR input mode and can help tame the volume for high output microphones. The EQ section in blue has three new Shift controls correlating to its standard Treble, Middle and Bass controls. The Shift knobs adjust the range of frequencies that the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs control. The center frequencies for the Shift knobs are Treble 10kHz, Middle 1kHz, and Bass 120Hz, while the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs boost or cut with +/- 17dB of control. If you want to boost high-mid frequencies, turn the Mid Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and increase the Middle knob above 12 o'clock. If you want to cut upper treble frequencies, turn the Treble Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and set the Treble knob below 12 o'clock. The Shift knobs give you precision control over the EQ for anything you put through the Colour Box V2. The Hi-Pass section is enabled by the toggle switch below the Hi-Pass knob. Just flip it up to engage the Hi-Pass knob, which spans from 60Hz to 800Hz with a 6dB per octave slope. The Colour Box V2 has a combination XLR and 1/4" input jack to use either an instrument or microphone. Select your input with the input selector switch on the right side of the pedal labeled INST/XLR. The Colour Box runs on standard 9V DC Negative power and measures 5. 7” x 3. 75” x 1. 85"

  • A full-fledged studio-grade preamplifier, EQ, and distortion generator with multi-instrument and microphone compatibility
  • The Gain section controls the overall volume of the unit, the amount of gain between the two internal gain stages, and the gain of each preamp stage in five stages
  • Using the new Hi/Lo switch, get ultra clean sounds without breakup when distortion is not needed or achieve a broad spectrum of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz sounds
  • A -20dB pad switch on the right side of the unit tame the volume for high output microphones when in XLR input mode
  • The new Shift knobs in the EQ section adjust the range of frequencies that the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs control to give you precision control over the EQ
  • The Hi-Pass section spans from 60Hz to 800Hz with a 6dB per octave slope
  • Offers 100% clean signal even on acoustic guitar, silent switching to eliminate "switch-pop", and passing phantom power to condenser mics

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used as a true preamp? sound good if i go guitar -> colour box -> effects loop return
Answer: Hello, ths is a set for a 12 string and what that means is there are 6 strings and 6 much thinner strings to be played together. The 6 string guitar needs the standard 6 string set for it. I hope this helps you. - PM
Question: Hi! i i am just about to pay for jhs color box v2 pedal but there is a note "usually ships within 1 to 2 months." what does it mean
Answer: I just pulled mine off the listing to avoid confusion as well. It appears a seller used the UPC code of a single pack to create a 2 pack listing, and then Amazon merged the two listings because of the same UPC code. Most likely if you order, the sellers at this low price point like myself are offering only a single pack. It's unfortunate when this happens, I will contact Amazon and see if there is any way to fix the listing.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this work with only a mic input
Answer: Yes
Question: What mic input does it take? I can't tell from the picture
Answer: No. It is meant for a guitarist to rest one foot to be able to hold a guitar easier while seated. It is about the size of the gas pedal in a car.
Question: does it come with a specific cord for the input
Answer: The footrest weighs 1 lb 6 oz.
Question: Can the mic be used regularly (pedal bypassed) ran through the pedal until you want to use the vocoder effects
Answer: Well, I wasn’t buying the kid in the photo, so I wasn’t really paying attention to that! This footrest is for either foot, though. Pretty sturdy, too!

User questions & answers

Question: What 9v power adapter do you recommend
Answer: ISpot is a good basic 9v... If you're using multiple pedals you can usually Daisy chain 2-3 w/o line hum. If running many pedals you may need a true isolated power supply to avoid line noise/him. I will say it's a pretty good little pedal for the price (and easy to squeeze into a tight pedal board)
Question: Would anyone know and confirm if this is analog or digital delay. how long is the delay time in ms? what about the reverb, is it spring or hall
Answer: delay is advertised as digital, but there is a degrading echo. to me, it sounds more analog. a digital echo will repeat just like the original sound. this pedal doesn't do that. reverb can be set short like a room, or long like a hall. it doesn't have a spring reverb sound. the way the pedal is setup, the delay is fed into the reverb when both are on. it sounds very good for a $60 pedal.
Question: Will this add reverb to voice for beater sounding karaoke
Answer: Most, if not all, pedals for guitar can be used with a 1/4 " jack microphone. The question left is: Is the microphone powered?, does it need a preamp?, or does it create a strong enough signal? Donner has a less expensive reverb that I will reccomend for karaoke. Just find one decent setting and keep it hidden from the singers.
Question: Can you use the reverb and delay at the same time
Answer: Yes... Nice little pedal for the price. It also has a separate footswitch for each function - Rev and Delay. I have it on a pedal board alongside Boss and other pedals and it is also nice with a smaller footprint. Only thing is you have to have a 9v power supply for it since it has no internal battery capabilities. I have a couple other Dinner mini pedals too (compressor and a noise gate) and they are pretty good, especially for the price

You can even Overdub then undo layers to bring the vibe up and down and your loops are automatically stored even when the unit is off.

  • Automatic mic gain control
  • Incredibly easy to use mic looper
  • 5 minutes loop length with unlimited overdub
  • Stop button for noiseless loop clear

User questions & answers

Question: Doest it saves the last loop when you turn it off and back on again
Answer: No, a vocoder works by combining a carrier signal and a modulating signal, so with a mic only you will be applying modulation to nothing. It can however work with an input and no mic.
Question: could I use this with my electric cello
Answer: There are two inputs. 1/4", or as i call it, a guitar cable, and a three prong microphone cable
Question: What usb cable do i need to connect to a mac
Answer: The Boss VO-1 Vocoder Effects Pedal does not come with any cords. The user must supply the 1/4-inch guitar cord, the XLR mic cord, and the 1/4-ich line-out cord. The user may also want to provide 9V power converter and two 1/4-inch shielded cords for an external effects loop. Playing the guitar produces the note and singing or talking into the mic produces the articulation or envelope. The sound produced at the output is not the sound of the guitar; it is a more synthetic somewhat distorted sound which can be adjusted in Blend, Tone, and Color. The loop out can be used to bypass the vocoder effect and output the pure sound of the guitar. Question: What microphones are compatible with this looper? My behringer microphone does not work with this device
Answer: Unfortunately if using the VO-1 Vocoder you'll need to use a separate mic for normal vocals going to front of house. So two mics in front of the performer would be necessary, one for normal vocals and the other for the VO-1 Vocoder. Vocoder sound would emit only from the guitar/bass amp that the VO-1 is connected.
