14 best tube distortion pedals
Tube distortion pedals are a type of guitar effects pedal that aims to replicate the warm and natural distortion produced by tube amplifiers. These pedals are popular among guitarists who want to achieve a classic, vintage rock or blues tone without the need for a full tube amplifier setup.
Here are some key points about tube distortion pedals:
Tube Emulation: Tube distortion pedals use solid-state electronics to mimic the characteristics of vacuum tubes (also known as valves). Tubes are known for producing a warm, saturated, and harmonically rich distortion when driven hard. Tube distortion pedals attempt to recreate this sound.
Gain Staging: These pedals often feature various controls, including Gain, Tone, and Volume knobs. The Gain control allows you to increase the level of distortion, while the Tone control lets you adjust the EQ to shape your sound. The Volume control determines the output level of the pedal.
Versatility: Tube distortion pedals are versatile and can be used with various types of amplifiers. They are often used in combination with clean or slightly overdriven amp settings to add extra grit and sustain to the guitar tone.
Tonal Characteristics: The sound produced by tube distortion pedals is often described as "smooth" and "musical." They can provide a dynamic response to your playing, with a gradual increase in distortion as you play harder.
Popular Models: There are numerous tube distortion pedals available on the market, each with its unique characteristics. Some popular models include the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Electro-Harmonix Hot Tubes, and the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver.
Power Requirements: Many tube distortion pedals require a standard 9-volt DC power supply, while some can also run on batteries. It's essential to check the power requirements of your specific pedal to ensure it functions correctly.
Placement in Signal Chain: Tube distortion pedals can be placed anywhere in your guitar's signal chain. Experimenting with their placement before or after other effects pedals can yield different tonal results.
Maintenance: Unlike real tube amplifiers, tube distortion pedals do not require the same level of maintenance, such as tube replacement. However, it's still essential to care for your pedal to ensure it functions reliably.
In summary, tube distortion pedals are a popular choice among guitarists looking for a classic, warm overdrive or distortion sound without the need for a full tube amplifier setup. They offer versatility and tonal characteristics that make them a valuable addition to a guitarist's pedalboard.

Product features
Real Tube
The heart of the MTG Tube distortion is a genuine vacuum tube, in this case a NOS (New Old Stock) 6205 preamp tube.
EQ Controls
Not only does the EQ section sport the traditional Bass, Middle and Treble controls, it also has a Tight control so you can contour the low end to taste.
Boost Controls
The Boost has its own Level and Boost controls—Level controls the master output level when the Boost circuit is engaged, while the Boost control affects how much gain is introduced.
Enclosure
We managed to shrink the MTG’s circuitry, fitting true tube-driven distortion into a chassis that easily fits on any pedalboard.
9V Power
The MTG uses a typical 9V center-negative power supply, making it easy to integrate into any rig. Internally, a switch-mode power supply converts the incoming 9 volts to 150 volts and applies that higher voltage to the tube’s plate—just like an amplifier.
Stage-Ready Construction
Every Fender effects pedal is crafted from lightweight, durable anodized aluminum and includes LED-illuminated controls.

Question: | As a boost, does the sd-1 do a good job to tighten things up? for rythm playing especially |

Question: | Can you plug straight into a passive speaker cab with this and get any sound |
Answer: | I would say that you might be able to plug into the FX Return of an amp and just use the power amp section. Otherwise, you would still need a clean power amp. I used to do that with my SansAmp BDDDI all the time. |
Question: | The led just flashes forever, changed the tube, thinking bad pedal |
Answer: | the LED should only flash until the tube is warmed up. Might want to try another tube. Did it keep flashing with the original tube?Bear in mined that I tried swapping a few tubes including NOS ones, and preferred the one it shipped with. YMMV... |
Question: | Its possible get a big muff violin like sound with this pedal |
Answer: | I don't think so. This pedal, amazing by the way, is an overdrive and gives you a good sustain but it's different than big muff's violin sound. The proposal and the sound are different because big muff is a fuzz pedal. It's architecture and circuits are different. |
Question: | Can this unit be used for harmonica playing also |
Answer: | Any overdrive pedal can be used to create an overdrive sound to a harmonica mic provided it's wired for a high impedance 1/4 phone jack. It should be noted that any mic used with overdrives or overdriven amps are more prone to feedback. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I plug this into my computer and use audacity to record |
Answer: | If you have a recording interface, you should be able to just plug from the quarter inch out on the Joyo to the quarter inch in on the interface. If you are using the computers 3.5 millimeter input, just make sure you do trial run or two to set the Joyo's Level control so that it doesn't distort the pc input. You may also need adapters or cables to fit the actone and pc jacks in order use them together. |
Question: | Can you bypass the cabinet simulator? is there a switch for that? (in case i want to use it with a guitar amp instead of direct to pa |
Answer: | Oh yeah, for bypassing the simulator you press on the switch and it turns the pedal off/on. you can use this as a preamp or a drive to get the AC flavour. The pedal itself isn't a cab simulator but more so copies the AC variety like a Drive pedal. The voice knob is the control for shaping the sound of the amp styles (inside the pedal) (I personally enjoy having the voice at 10o'clock.) I think this will do fine going into your chain and out to an amplifier. Hope this helps! |
Question: | I was wondering how much signal gain/boost this pedal is capable of? Looking to get an instrument level close to line level to feed a headphone amp. TIA |
Answer: | I'm not sure on a technical level how much signal boost this pedal can provide, and I've seen nothing online either, but I've used it straight into a PA without a guitar amp (it's an amp simulator so that sounds pretty good) and it had more than enough signal to work with. |
Question: | hi...is this good for bass |
Answer: | Ran bass through it straight into the PA. Turned effects off and it sounded really good. Used for worship. Typically play guitar and have several pedals on my board with this the last pedal on board. Bypassed all pedals for bass. Ran bass into the input and out to the PA. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This one or the combo drive??? any opinion? I play Rock and blues |
Answer: | No it it does not include a power supply. |
Question: | Does this pedal suck the highs and lows from the signal |
Answer: | The Plumes is basically a Tubescreamer with some options added (asymmetrical clipping, boost, symmetrical clipping). The EQ leans towards being bright and slightly scooped. I don't think Plumes is really fit for purpose for metal tones. In my humble opinion. Perhaps check out the EQD Tonejob plus a metal distortion pedal... |
Question: | Will the BD2 stack well if placed after a fuzz face to boost and shape the fuzz pedal's sound |
Answer: | I don't use batteries as I have a large board and use a power supply. I have tried over a dozen ODs, even boutique, and this pedal is the best. I get all the crunch gain from my Mesa, but a light OD on the clean channel is a must. You get 3 different tones with this one, and the price is stupid cheap. Their website does NOT mention battery power so I assume there is no room inside. |
Question: | Does the bd-2 have more distortion/overdrive available than a tube screamer |
Answer: | I think this is supposed to be a tube-screamer type pedal. Mine didn’t sound anything like a TS9 or 808 regardless of the settings. |

Question: | How is it powered? i'm looking to buying this as my first pedal and i know nothing |
Answer: | Yes it allows easy to connect, I use it at the shower when the water makes a lot of back noise and I can talk perfect, but during calls if you want to keep a fluid conversation, I have noticed that the mic works perfect no farther than 1m (around 3ft) farther than that the other side on the call will start to experience breaks at your voice, but if you keep close everything works nice and smooth. |
Question: | I have an orange 35rt and wondered how this pedal would shape the tone? is the tube screamer mainly for tube amps |
Answer: | Yes it does. |
Question: | What chip is used in these new re-issues |
Answer: | There saved |
Question: | Would i sound like metallica with this |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used with a digital amp (e.g Fender Champion |
Answer: | A digital amp probably already has "greenbox" effects. |
Question: | Which would be better? overdrive/distortion pedal or vintage tube overdrive? ...(off course from behringer |
Answer: | It spends on the sound your looking for. If more focused on blues and rock and roll, choose the vintage tube overdrive. If more of an interest in metal or alternative, the overdrive / distortion pedal is a great choice. |
Question: | DOES IT NEED A BATTERY |
Answer: | Yes, it needs a battery or a power adapter. I use it in a pedal board with an adapter mostly but have use a 9 volt battery with it too at times. It's actually a real good sounding pedal, very simular to an Ibenez Tube Screamer. |
Question: | Getting an amp and a this as a gift, for someone who only has an electric guitar but no amp! What kind of cables/anything else |
Answer: | You'll need at least two cables. One from the guitar to the pedal, and another one from the pedal to the amp. But, if the amp has an "Effects Loop" channel, he'll need a third cable to use it. (However, it is not necessary to use the channel, if it does have one.) Two 10' cables would cover most needs. Be sure to get "instrument" cables, and not "speaker" cables, as they can look identical. You'll want what's usually referred to as a "1/4in. Mono Phone Plug" on the ends of the cables. If you need more advice, just ask. It would help to know what kind/size of amp you want to get. |

EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2
The Acapulco Gold is a dirt-simple distortion device modeled after the sound of a cranked vintage Model T amplifier, bringing the openness, clarity, and crunch that only a dimed tube amp can provide, at a fraction of the size, and without expensive maintenance costs! We also decided to keep the controls of the Acapulco Gold as simple as possible. The footswitch turns the pedal on and off, and the giant knob controls the output volume. That’s it. The rest is at your fingertips.
Big Knob
The big knob sets the output level, sometimes known as Volume. With your guitar’s volume all the way up, the Acapulco Gold roars like a wide-open Model T on the verge of explosion. At just-barely-backed-off, the Gold becomes a raunchy overdrive. At minimum guitar volume settings, the Acapulco Gold delivers a hazy, Nashville-sounding spank to your tone.

The voicings can be sculpted via musically-tuned EQ shelves and a mid control, as well as potent gain and level controls. These precision tools allow it to add a push to a driven amp, full-on distortion in front of a clean amp, or a boost in front of a digital modeler.
