13 best overdrive pedals
Overdrive pedals are popular musical accessories used primarily with electric guitars to shape and enhance their sound. These pedals are a subset of guitar effects and fall under the category of gain-based effects. Overdrive pedals are commonly used by guitarists to achieve a warm, saturated, and slightly distorted tone that adds character and texture to their playing. Here's what you need to know about overdrive pedals:
Tone Enhancement: Overdrive pedals are designed to simulate the natural distortion that occurs when a tube amplifier is pushed to its limits. They add a harmonically rich, creamy texture to the guitar sound while preserving the dynamics of playing.
Gain Control: Overdrive pedals typically have a "Gain" or "Drive" control knob that allows you to adjust the amount of saturation or distortion added to your guitar signal. Lower settings produce a mild overdrive, while higher settings create a more saturated and distorted sound.
Tone and EQ Controls: Many overdrive pedals include tone control knobs to shape the overall sound. These knobs let you adjust the brightness or darkness of the overdriven tone, allowing you to tailor it to your preference. Some pedals also have EQ controls (e.g., Bass, Mid, Treble) for more precise tonal adjustments.
Volume Control: The "Volume" knob on an overdrive pedal adjusts the output volume level. This allows you to match the pedal's output to the clean sound of your guitar or to boost your signal for solos or accentuated parts.
True Bypass vs. Buffered Bypass: Overdrive pedals can be designed with different bypass modes. "True Bypass" means that when the pedal is turned off, it doesn't affect your guitar signal at all. "Buffered Bypass" may maintain the signal chain integrity even when the pedal is off, which can be useful for long cable runs but may affect your guitar's tone.
Stacking: Many guitarists use overdrive pedals in combination with other effects like distortion, fuzz, or delay to create complex and unique sounds. The order in which you stack these effects can significantly impact your overall tone.
Genres and Styles: Overdrive pedals are versatile and can be used in various musical genres. They are commonly associated with blues, rock, and classic rock styles, but they can also be used in jazz, country, and other genres to add warmth and character to the guitar sound.
Brands and Models: There are numerous overdrive pedal brands and models available, each offering unique features and tonal characteristics. Some well-known brands in the industry include Boss, Ibanez, Tube Screamer, Fulltone, and many more.
Power Source: Overdrive pedals can be powered by batteries or external power supplies (usually 9V DC). It's essential to check the power requirements of your specific pedal to ensure it operates correctly.
In summary, overdrive pedals are essential tools for electric guitarists seeking to add warmth, saturation, and a touch of distortion to their sound. They offer versatile tonal shaping options and can be used in various musical contexts to achieve the desired guitar tone and character.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this pedal make a clean amp go heavy |
Answer: | Either effect, the metal giant or this one they are both good for lead solo's. It's how you set it. I would go to the music store near you and see the difference for yourself. I don't think you need it. |
Question: | As a boost, does the sd-1 do a good job to tighten things up? for rythm playing especially |
Answer: | I assume you mean power cord. No. None ever do. Buy the donner cord with the 5 spilt. Worth it if you plan to ever have more than 1. |
Question: | I'm kind of confused to the manual: am I supposed to turn on my amp first or turn on this pedal first? What about the order of turning everything off |
Answer: | Thanks for your questionsour pedals are negative center ,plug polarity is positive on the barrel and negative in the center.you can use it with the Planet Waves mentioned. |
Question: | cord |
Answer: | Thanks for your questionNot,there is no power cable included, only a guitar pedal! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know how many milliamps this pedal uses |
Answer: | It means that its part of a three pack. Simple as that! So no difference in the product at all. |
Question: | How does this compare to the behringer vintage tube overdrive |
Answer: | The d'addario coated strings are heavier than the non-coated ones, although it is still custom lights which I find easier on the fingers than regular lights. |
Question: | does this come with a power supply |
Answer: | I prefer the Phosphor Bronze to straight Bronze because they have a warmer sound with more bottom end and noticeably less brightness at the top. EXPs are the most natural sounding coated strings I've tried, as well. |
Question: | Is this good for Blackstar Fly 3 Amp |
Answer: | Hi Jason- I play both types of strings. The coated strings are less bright but they stay fresher a little longer. For me, coated strings are less rough on my fingers when I play for a long time. I use coated phosphor bronze on my practice and jamming guitar. For performances, I like a fresh set of uncoated phosphor bronze strings because they're bright and metallic sounding. All the players I know prefer the D'Addario strings. Elixers sound a little thuddy and dull. Martin strings are not much better. The difference between phosphor bronze and 80/ 20 has to due with their composition of course. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. 80/20 are 80% copper and 20% tin. Phosphor bronze are 92% copper, 8% tin, and a little phosphorus. The phosphorus keeps the strings from oxidizing. This way they sound better longer than 80/20 strings. For me, uncoated strings start to sound old after a couple of weeks. The coated strings sound good for about a month. It's all really subjective though. I know a guy who only changed a string when one breaks! Hope this info helps you out. |

In 2012, I had a crazy idea for a tone shaping device that had never been done before in the world of guitar pedals. I wanted to create an effects pedal that replicated the hard to achieve sounds of "direct-in" electric guitar recordings that I loved. Bands like the Beatles, Spoon, WIlco, and Steely Dan had used this technique for years, but it was nearly impossible to recreate live. I wanted this pedal to transform my guitar rig into the tonal equivalent of a Neve studio console, and that was no small task. After lots of trial and error, experimentation, and re-works, this concept evolved into something far beyond what we had imagined. In 2014 as we filmed the first demo videos at Abbey Road Studios in London and this idea had evolved into the most unique product we had ever made. The Colour Box was a full-fledged studio-grade preamplifier, EQ, and distortion generator with multi-instrument compatibility. It did what I had always wanted it to do, but it did so much more! On its release day, I wasn't quite sure how it would be accepted, but I knew that I loved it. As a few months went by, we saw something amazing begin to happen; this pedal was showing up in all types of environments. Producers, engineers, and artists were emailing us, tagging us on socials and showing how they had put the Colour Box to use. Studio vocals, live vocals, kick drums, acoustic guitars, bass, keys, overhead drums, stereo bus's, room mics, synths, re-amps, and some incredibly large stage setups had it on almost every instrument! This unit can be heard on dozens of recordings from U2, Wilco, Beck, Mac DeMarco, St. Vincent, The National, Spoon, Collective Soul, Muse, to War on Drugs, Foo Fighters, and Phantogram amongst others. As proud of this pedal as we were, we wanted to make it better, so we did. – Josh Scott The Colour Box V2 has all the same functionality of the V1 with many new and improved additions like expanded EQ controls, a Hi/Lo switch for massive clean headroom, and the ability to pass phantom power to your condenser mics. The most significant improvements are: Addition of an Output transformer Safely Passes 48v Phantom Power EQ Shift Knobs for precision EQ control Hi/Lo Switch for ultra clean headroom 100% available clean signal even on acoustic guitar Silent switching, aka no "switch-pop" Runs on standard 9V DC Neg power Let's take a look at the features and controls of the Colour Box V2. The Gain section in red has three controls: Master, Pre-Vol, and Step. The Master volume controls the overall volume of the unit. The Pre-Vol controls the amount of gain between the two internal gain stages. This acts as a "drive" or "gain" control, adding more grit, distortion, and even fuzz as you increase the gain. The Step control increases the gain of each preamp stage in five stages. Rotating the Step knob from left-to-right will increase the gain by the following: 1st is +18 dB, 2nd is +23 dB, 3rd is +28 dB, 4th is +33 dB, 5th is +39 dB. The Colour Box V2 has a new Hi / Lo switch to control the amount of clean headroom you have available. In the Lo mode, you will easily be able to get ultra clean sounds without breakup. Lo Mode is excellent for tone shaping when distortion is not needed. In the Hi mode, the Colour Box V2 will distort much more readily, giving you a broad spectrum of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz sounds. In addition to the Hi / Lo gain switch, there is a -20dB pad switch on the right side of the Colour Box V2. This function only works when in XLR input mode and can help tame the volume for high output microphones. The EQ section in blue has three new Shift controls correlating to its standard Treble, Middle and Bass controls. The Shift knobs adjust the range of frequencies that the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs control. The center frequencies for the Shift knobs are Treble 10kHz, Middle 1kHz, and Bass 120Hz, while the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs boost or cut with +/- 17dB of control. If you want to boost high-mid frequencies, turn the Mid Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and increase the Middle knob above 12 o'clock. If you want to cut upper treble frequencies, turn the Treble Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and set the Treble knob below 12 o'clock. The Shift knobs give you precision control over the EQ for anything you put through the Colour Box V2. The Hi-Pass section is enabled by the toggle switch below the Hi-Pass knob. Just flip it up to engage the Hi-Pass knob, which spans from 60Hz to 800Hz with a 6dB per octave slope. The Colour Box V2 has a combination XLR and 1/4" input jack to use either an instrument or microphone. Select your input with the input selector switch on the right side of the pedal labeled INST/XLR. The Colour Box runs on standard 9V DC Negative power and measures 5. 7” x 3. 75” x 1. 85"

Question: | Can this be used as a true preamp? sound good if i go guitar -> colour box -> effects loop return |
Answer: | Hello, ths is a set for a 12 string and what that means is there are 6 strings and 6 much thinner strings to be played together. The 6 string guitar needs the standard 6 string set for it. I hope this helps you. - PM |
Question: | Hi! i i am just about to pay for jhs color box v2 pedal but there is a note "usually ships within 1 to 2 months." what does it mean |
Answer: | I just pulled mine off the listing to avoid confusion as well. It appears a seller used the UPC code of a single pack to create a 2 pack listing, and then Amazon merged the two listings because of the same UPC code. Most likely if you order, the sellers at this low price point like myself are offering only a single pack. It's unfortunate when this happens, I will contact Amazon and see if there is any way to fix the listing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this suitable for electric guitar |
Answer: | We sell silk and steel strings to a lot of beginners, as well as XL strings. They are easier on the fingers. But, the only real solution is to play every day for a couple of weeks, play until your finger pads hurt, then stop until the next day. In a couple of weeks the skin will be tougher, and you can play any strings you like. |

Plumes is a unique, all-analog approach to a classic tube-like overdrive circuit offering 3 different clipping voices, loads of headroom and almost three-dimensional clarity that will push your amp over the edge. The reimagined tone control is finely tuned to sculpt low end, clear top end, and focus midrange with blooming sustain. Plumes is an overdrive based around that classically overdone tube-like circuit you all know, and amps crave. While this particular circuit has been done to death, we here at EarthQuaker Devices brand of special effects pedals think the plumes offers an original take on the old, tired Dead horse everyone loves to beat on. You can’t get enough of it, so we are giving you some more. Doctor’s orders and what not…. for starters, we’ve done away with the Sacred 4558 IC and the classic BJT Transistor buffers and replaced them with JFET operational amplifiers and raised the input impedance to nearly 10 Mega ohms! This offers lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end. We POWER This opamp by taking the 9V input and internally converting it to +/- 9V to give it more headroom. The end result is a more three-dimensional tone with added clarity that really pushes a nice tube amp over the edge. You might notice how those badass leads you’re always ripping will blast over those awful, no good cymbals your drummer is constantly bashing around on. It sounds like diamonds…a million f**king Diamonds! We’ve also added three different clipping options for your consideration. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes. This is the crunchiest setting the plumes has to offer. When played through a clean amp, it’ll deliver a reasonable facsimile of that classic black and gold British valve amp tone. If you already set your amp Dirty, using this mode will make it filthy. Mode 2 is clean boost mode. This eliminates the soft clipping diodes altogether and leaves you with straight opamp drive. This is perfect for pushing your clean tone out in front or driving The preamp of an already overdriven amp into tasteful breakup territory. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock Screamer but with more output and clean clarity; The tone some people describe as “transparent”. it’s almost as if your clean tone is blended in with a slightly less clean tone, ya know? Using this mode gives a warmer low-end response and lower output. It’s less hard on your amp and your ears. It’s a classic pleasant tone The whole band can enjoy. Not enough for you? We’ve also improved the way the classic tone control operates while still leaving it familiar enough to keep you warm and comfortable. It’s still a safe space, No worries in here. It’s now useful through the whole range. The low end is big and clear, and the high end is bright and cutting without killing the mids. Just the right amount of tonal tickling to excite those ear drums yet still give that familiar mid-heavy drive.
- All-analog approach to a classic tube-like overdrive circuit
- 3 different clipping voices
- Lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end
- Loads of headroom and almost three-dimensional clarity that will push your amp over the edge
- The reimagined tone control is finely tuned to sculpt low end, clear top end, and focus midrange with blooming sustain
User questions & answers
Question: | Is the power supply included |
Answer: | I've never owned any behringer pedals. This is as close to an 808 as you can get for under $50. Im happy with it. |
Question: | Can you use the Plumes to make a fuzz pedal (or already-overdriven amp) sound tighter for metal/hard rock tones |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can it be battery powered |
Answer: | It should work fine. Not sure how it will sound, but you can search youtube with the words "overdrive pedal into Blackstar Fly 3" and find videos that demo similar pedals into the Blackstar Fly 3. |
Question: | is this a boss sd-1 clone or a tube screamer clone? if it is a tube screamer clone is it a ts 9 or a ts |
Answer: | According to the Ernie Ball website :"Made from 80% copper, 20% zinc wire wrapped around hex shaped tin plated steel core wire. The most popular acoustic guitar strings provide a crisp, ringing sound with pleasing overtones." Zinc and copper are both minerals found in the earth and strings are made in factories that use a variety of metals. I would imagine that there COULD be some cross contamination in the manufacturing process but it should not happen. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This one or the combo drive??? any opinion? I play Rock and blues |
Answer: | No it it does not include a power supply. |
Question: | Does this pedal suck the highs and lows from the signal |
Answer: | The Plumes is basically a Tubescreamer with some options added (asymmetrical clipping, boost, symmetrical clipping). The EQ leans towards being bright and slightly scooped. I don't think Plumes is really fit for purpose for metal tones. In my humble opinion. Perhaps check out the EQD Tonejob plus a metal distortion pedal... |
Question: | Will the BD2 stack well if placed after a fuzz face to boost and shape the fuzz pedal's sound |
Answer: | I don't use batteries as I have a large board and use a power supply. I have tried over a dozen ODs, even boutique, and this pedal is the best. I get all the crunch gain from my Mesa, but a light OD on the clean channel is a must. You get 3 different tones with this one, and the price is stupid cheap. Their website does NOT mention battery power so I assume there is no room inside. |
Question: | Does the bd-2 have more distortion/overdrive available than a tube screamer |
Answer: | I think this is supposed to be a tube-screamer type pedal. Mine didn’t sound anything like a TS9 or 808 regardless of the settings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anybody tried this with a bass guitar? I want to boost the volume of one of the pickups without affecting the tone |
Answer: | I bought the phase pedal,It doesn't seem to affect my tone when I kick it on, no volume or tone changes, just the tremolo effect. |
Question: | Does thus pedal include a power supply |
Answer: | It has a great over-saturated, thick distortion sound. Nice, round & full-bodied tone & not "buzzsaw" or too fuzzy. It can do an overdrive, light distortion very well but that's not really its strong point. If that's the sound you're looking for check out the Kmise US Dream pedal (Purple, I think), it does the hot tube/overdrive really well. But if you're wanting a thick chunky sound, this is what you want. |
Question: | Can you put a 9-volt battery in it |
Answer: | This came with the distorion pedal, user manual, and that's all |
Question: | how long can the pedal go without being charged after full.charge |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this optical, vca, or fet compression |
Answer: | Fernando, not understanding the combo drive part of the question but this is an excellent pedal for blues and classic rock. Plenty of overdrive delivering lots of punch, nice sustain. Really a quality pedal. Am running a fat strat and tele through this and liking the results. Delivers a much fuller tone with bite if you crank it up. There are better options for thrashing but this works nicely for what it's designed for. If had to choose one pedal, this would probably be the one. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What exactly does a compressor pedal do |
Answer: | The BD-2 Blues Driver delivers the creamy, yet crunchy sound associated with great blues guitar. This popular pedal provides instant access to the kind of warm overdrive and emotive distortion usually reserved for 30-year-old tube amps. Not sure what you mean by "sucking the highs and lows" but this pedal has a tone control that lets you do some basic EQ work to your sound too. There are plenty of demo videos of this pedal online that do a decent job of demonstrating what it can do. It has been a strong seller for us too and is very popular. |
Question: | Works great on bass |
Answer: | I never tried that but, for me, it won't work... Because the fuzz pedal is so strong and defined, I won't recommend any other overdrive or distortion pedal after that. I believe this combination won't fit with the blues proposal. |
Question: | Whats the difference between compressor and distortion |
Answer: | Yes, actually, it does. I have an Ibanez TS9 standard tube screamer pedal and I consider that to be the standard overdrive pedal. I also have the BD-2 and to me, it is not so "bluesy". If what you are after is a warm, rich velvety blues tone with a little bit of bite. I was shocked when I plugged in that BD-2 and played it. To me, it is actually a distortion pedal, not an overdrive. It is way over the top for teeth-gnashing grit. If you want a more bluesy, warm tone for playing blues, I would suggest the Fender drive pedal. I like that one best for blues. It's cheaper too! It is a nice, warm drive pedal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Please help. Is this a low to mid gain overdrive. And what is the lower pot labeled? FAT? I can see bass treble and gain |

Question: | Where would you stack this in the pedal chain...before or after a higher gain pedal? and has anyone compared this to the joyo sweet baby |
Answer: | No. I use a 9v adapter. |
Question: | How does this sound through a solid state amp |
Answer: | Yes, The first answer is correct. The pedal comes with 9v whip end that plugs in so that you CAN use a 9v battery instead of an adapter which is not supplied. |
Question: | what is this a clone of? Orange boss ds-1, or orange amp rockerverb |
Answer: | This pedal, like every other pedal mankind has ever invented does not take a charge. To use it you plug it into your pedalboard or a 9v power source. Other than not being rechargeable it's a great little stomp box. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this pedal come with any cable |
Answer: | It's said to be a Dynacomp clone which would be a CA3080, which would be a pretty generic op amp circuit, probably jfets on a chip. |
Question: | whats a good 18v power supply to use with this |
Answer: | It makes soft sounds louder to get to the same volume as louder ones, evening out your playing. Consider how you can hit a low note on a bass that can rattle your teeth but hitting a note on a higher string seems to have little impact. Turn the compressor on and it all is very even. It will also make your tone have more of an expressive attack. |
Question: | does this be od deluxe sound fizzy in any way? i hate fizzy sound in overdrive pedals and i don't want to waste a bunch of money on one that is fizzy |
Answer: | I purchased this for my bass-and it totally rocks-super tone and quality for the price-have other pedals that have cost three times the price, and this little boss is worth it!💯👌 |
Question: | Does this pedal have internal gain trim pot like the be od |
Answer: | They are totally different effects. Compression evens out your signal. It raises any weak part of your guitars output and squashes the top end to give you a more even balanced sound. This can also give you a bit more sustain. You may not even notice it's on but it does give you nice control of your overall signal to the amp. Distortion gives you a raged raw grunge sound that blurs your notes in chords and adds a hard attack to singular notes. There are also Overdrive pedals that allow you to get the sound of an amp cranked way up but at a lower volume. All are different. Use YouTube to search examples of all three types of pedals. |
