13 best bass guitar amps

Bass guitar amps are amplifiers specifically designed to reproduce and enhance the sound of bass guitars. They are an essential part of a bassist's setup and are crucial for shaping the tone and volume of the instrument. Here are some key aspects and features of bass guitar amps:

  1. Amplification Type: Bass amps can be categorized into three main types: solid-state, tube (valve), and hybrid. Each type has its own tonal characteristics and advantages. Solid-state amps are known for reliability and a clean sound. Tube amps offer warm and vintage tones. Hybrid amps combine both technologies for a balance between warmth and reliability.

  2. Wattage: The wattage of a bass amp determines its power output and volume capability. Smaller amps (15-50 watts) are suitable for practice and small gigs, while larger amps (100 watts or more) are better for larger venues and stages.

  3. Speaker Configuration: Bass amps can have different speaker configurations, such as 1x12", 2x10", 4x10", or 8x10". The choice depends on your playing style, the genre of music, and your desired sound projection.

  4. Equalization: Bass amps typically feature an EQ section with knobs for bass, midrange, and treble controls. Some amps also include a graphic EQ or parametric EQ for more precise tone shaping.

  5. Effects and Features: Many modern bass amps come with built-in effects like distortion, compression, chorus, and more. These can add versatility to your sound without the need for external pedals.

  6. DI Output: A Direct Injection (DI) output is essential for connecting your bass amp to a mixing console or recording equipment. It provides a clean, balanced signal for live sound reinforcement or recording.

  7. Portability: Consider the weight and size of the amp if you plan to transport it frequently. Some bass amps are designed to be lightweight and portable for gigging musicians.

  8. Tube vs. Solid-State: The choice between tube and solid-state amps often comes down to personal preference. Tubes offer a warm and natural distortion when pushed, while solid-state amps tend to have a cleaner sound at higher volumes.

  9. Brand and Model: Well-known brands like Ampeg, Fender, Hartke, and Gallien-Krueger produce a wide range of bass amps with varying features and tonal characteristics.

  10. Budget: Bass amps come in a wide price range, so it's essential to set a budget that aligns with your needs and expectations.

  11. Compatibility: Ensure that the amp is compatible with your bass guitar and any other equipment you plan to use, such as pedals or a bass preamp.

Choosing the right bass amp is crucial for achieving the desired tone and performance in your bass playing. Experimenting with different amp types and configurations can help you find the one that suits your style and musical preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension
Answer: You can use it normally. It's plastic but it's well built. However if you use it in extreme condition you have to protect. But If you use it normally..be care only in front part where you can find speaker. In fact speaker could be demaged. But this problem is for all amply big and small
Question: As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts
Answer: Simply put, it dosent. The fender is a nice shelf nicknack to look at, and it's ok with headphones to, but its sound is pretty lacking. The Orange would be a real practice amp. Of any real micro amp to consider I would spend a little more and get a vox mini 3. Just this past year I had the chance to help run sound for Peter Furler, he used one live mic'd with a Sennheiser e609 playing his Gretch White Falcon and it sounded amazing!
Question: I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band
Answer: I would think that they would be. I used these same gloves when I worked at Whirlpool. They were great. I have been retired for 10 years now and I ordered these to do work around the house. I have gotten them very wet and let them dry and reused them.
Question: is this amp usable in new zealand
Answer: I get the biggest size which has it on there so my guess is that maybe that 8/m is on all the gloves

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks
Answer: Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.
Question: Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound
Answer: It depends on the dealer's policy.
Question: Does it come with a wire
Answer: Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab.
Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound .

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use my acoustic I rig mic with this? With the headphone type plug
Answer: there is an AUX IN jack that takes a 3.5mm plug. Yes.
Question: Will this sound good if I’m Playin piano using my midi keyboard
Answer: Depends on how good your speakers are in your keyboard if your keyboard has stereo speakers they're probably going to sound better but as far as a little amp goes it's adequate
Question: what kind of cable do I need to connect to my Uke
Answer: Dear JOYO fan or user, it required a normal audio cable connect to Uke. thanks for your question.
Question: Can a microphone be plugged into this amplifier
Answer: Yes but you'll want to be aware that the amp takes a 1/4" plug, so you might need a converter. I also would be cautious if the mic requires phantom power. The amp doesnt provide it, so you'll need to get it elsewhere. If you have a mic preamp, then you could also plug the mic into that and the preamp into the aux jack, which would allow you to still be able to plug a guitar into the 1/4" jack. However be aware that the aux jack doesnt go through the volume/tone/gain, so you'll need to provide that elsewhere (which is why a preamp would be helpful)

  • Active 3 Band EQ
  • Parametric Mid Control
  • Bi Amp Inspired Blend and Gain Controls (Foot switchable)
  • Buffered Effects Loop
  • Chromatic Tuner

User questions & answers

Question: Does this amp have a fan
Answer: I'm honestly unsure. If it does, I've never, ever heard it running. I've played indoors and outdoors - cooler weather (say 50degF) and warmer weather (say 90degF) and never ran into any temp-related issues in that range. I use it with my bass guitar.
Question: Loud enough to play live
Answer: Maybe in a small indoor venue. The 100 watt would fair better.
Question: Could I run a drop tubes 7 string guitar through this
Answer: Sorry; I'm a little familiar with a Drop D; Drop A; etc., on a 7 string but not with Drop Tubes. Ultimately, you can play a guitar 6 string, 7 string, 12 string through a bass amp, but you're going to lose sound quality.
Question: Hello I need to use it in Argentina, there the voltage is 220v, which should I modify in the amplifier
Answer: You need to change the fuse in the back panel only. It is also rated for 220V when you change the fuse to the value on the sticker on the back pane. I will use the amp in Germany where we also have 220V.

Orange Crush Bass 50

From warm modern cleans, through to vintage grind and all the way up to full-on distorted mayhem, the Crush Bass 50 combines the essentials of a practice rig with tone and features normally reserved for the pros. The Crush Bass 50 draws inspiration from our flagship OB1 and 4 Stroke amplifiers, bringing some of the defining elements of each into a compact combo.

Like the rest of the Crush Bass range, this 50 Watt model delivers bold and punchy lows courtesy of its analogue circuitry and ported cabinetry. The extremely flexible active EQ section includes a sweepable parametric mid band, allowing players to shape their signature sound without limitations. For even more versatility, the interactive Gain and Blend controls are primed for creating enormous ‘bi-amped’-style tones with ease, adding extra harmonics and variable levels of grit to the core bass tone. They can also be switched in remotely using the optional footswitch. Other handy features include a buffered effects loop, integrated tuner, aux. input and a headphone output with our Cabsim circuitry.

Ever since the founding of the company in 1968, Orange has been a pioneering force in the guitar amplification industry. Our commitment to craftsmanship and quality control has allowed our amplifiers to stand the test of time, giving their owners as much pleasure now, as the day they were bought. Today, with a team of the world’s finest amplifier engineers, Orange continues to push back the boundaries of conventional amplifier design.

Powerful Active Parametric EQ

The Crush Bass 50 features an EQ circuit inspired by our prestigious 4 Stroke Series amplifiers. At its centre is a parametric mid band. This presents players with a much greater degree of control over the sound than a traditional EQ, allowing them to vary the frequencies they want hear. The mid band covers a wide range, sweeping from 300Hz (fully counter-clockwise) to 2.7kHz (fully clockwise), meaning this amp can be fine tuned to suit any musical style. The active circuitry allows for up to 15dB of boost or cut on the bass and middle frequencies, and up to 20dB on the treble side.

Blend & Gain

Lifted straight from our popular OB1 Series amps, the Blend and Gain controls are a nod to the many bass players who experiment with guitar and bass amps simultaneously. In this ‘bi-amped’ setup, layers of harmonics and distortion from the guitar amp are blended with the core bass tone to create the ultimate full-range live sound. The Crush Bass 50’s Gain and Blend controls create the same effect in a single package, adding extra bite and crispness to the tone at lower gain settings, right up to all-out filth with the dials cranked. These controls can also be engaged remotely with the optional FS-1 footswitch, ideal for fattening your tone on the fly.

Analogue Design & Ported Cabinet

The Crush Bass series delivers fat, rounded sound thanks to an all analogue signal path. The Crush Bass 50 houses a 12” speaker with a reflex port for improved low-end response. The buffered effects loop has been engineered for maximum transparency, ensuring your pedal arsenal will perform to its peak.

Cabsim Headphone Output, Aux Input & Chromatic Tuner

The headphone output features our Cabsim circuitry which emulates the response of our stage-ready OBC bass speaker cabinets during silent practice. This signal can also be sent to a console for seriously authentic direct recording. The Aux. Input allows for connecting external audio sources for backing tracks whilst the handy onboard tuner makes for quick tune-ups between jams.

Brian 'Head' Welch - KoRn

“KoRn has always been in the game of matching different amp tones and blending them together in the studio. And Orange has always been right there in the mix!"

Sergio Vega - Bass Player for Deftones/Quicksand

"This sounds really meaty. We tweaked it [the Crush Bass combo] for a about 30 seconds tops and we got a great sound without investing much time into it. With the Crush Bass 50, I see myself using it on home, recording with it, taking it on the road, recording at the hotel. This thing sounds really good. I could use this live in certain capacities and certain gigs and I wouldn’t have any issue bringing this into a space."

Glenn Hughes - Bassist for Deep Purple

"You can go in the studio, take that bass combo and make your album with something like that, it’s truly outstanding. It’s gritty, it’s punchy, sustain is so important and it’s certainly got all that."

  • Emulated Line Out for 'silent' practice or recording

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used during a parade for portable usage
Answer: It is better used inside, but it can be used for a parade. You may have to mic it. Not sure if it would be loud enough without.
Question: Please tell me, does the ⅛" imput socket on the amplifier's top (described as an MP3 input "for jamming along") accept and play an analog/mic signal
Answer: No, it's line level input socket. You can't connect microphone directly to the line level input socket. You need a microphone pre-amplifier for that. As soon your microphone is amplified ( using an optional mic pre-amp) you can connect it to that "MP3" line level socket.
Question: Really? david bowie's album name and logo? how's this possible
Answer: We love Bowie too, but Blackstar started in 2007, long before his 2016 album.
Question: I have a question. The model Specified on this page is for bass guitar
Answer: Yes, it is specified for bass guitar. The compressor is useful for something this small being used for bass and actually at low volumes reproduces low B better than expected.

User questions & answers

Question: what are its dimensions and does it come with a power supply
Answer: The combo is 18" high, 15.7" wide, and 13.2" deep. It comes with a standard 120VAC power cable.
Question: What is the speaker wattage of the max 100? Is it a100 watt
Answer: No, it’s a 50 watt.
Question: What is the weight of this amp? Specs say 1 lb, but that's highly unlikely
Answer: Very unlikely. ;) Even so, I double-checked the weight on my bathroom scale. It's a VERY manageable 25 pounds (or 11.3 kilograms).
Question: Can a microphone also be hook up for playing the guitar and sing at the same time? Thanks
Answer: Short answer: Maybe. Longer answer: There's an Auxiliary Input (3.5mm) that's normally for audio input from an iPod/phone/external music source. You might be able to plug in a microphone with a 3.5mm plug, but I don't know if the signal would be strong enough to complete with the bass. You might be better off dropping Peavey a note and getting your answer direct from them.

User questions & answers

Question: So do you have to have headphones on to hear it, or is there a speaker
Answer: Basically, you need headphones on to hear it. But if you happen to have a speaker with a headphone jack that would probably work though. It only works via the headphone jack.
Question: can I exchange
Answer: Yes
Question: Will it work with electric guitar
Answer: Look at their entire lineup, they have one or two specifically for electric
Question: Is this supposed to be just for active basses? I can barely hear it
Answer: I am using it with a passive bass (no amp or eq or battery) and at full volume it is adequate into my headphones. That is all I can say. I think it is good device for practice.
