14 best solid state guitar amps

Solid-state guitar amps are a type of guitar amplifier that uses semiconductor components, such as transistors, to amplify the signal from an electric guitar. These amps are known for their reliability, durability, and clean sound reproduction. Here are some key aspects related to solid-state guitar amps and their components:

  1. Transistors: Solid-state amps use transistors, which are semiconductor devices, instead of vacuum tubes to amplify the guitar signal. Transistors are more reliable and require less maintenance than tubes.

  2. Clean Sound: Solid-state amps are known for their clean and accurate sound reproduction. They produce less harmonic distortion compared to tube amps, making them suitable for genres like jazz and clean blues.

  3. Compact and Lightweight: Solid-state amps are often more compact and lightweight than their tube counterparts, making them a preferred choice for musicians who need portability.

  4. Reliability: Solid-state amps are generally more reliable and less prone to breakdowns compared to tube amps. They are less sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity.

  5. Cost-Effective: Solid-state amplifiers are often more affordable than tube amps, making them a popular choice for beginners and budget-conscious musicians.

  6. Modeling Technology: Many modern solid-state amps incorporate digital modeling technology that can simulate the sounds of various classic tube amps and effects. This allows for a wide range of tonal options in a single amplifier.

  7. Combo Amps: Combo amps combine the amplifier and speaker in a single unit. They are popular for their convenience and portability.Solid-state combo amps are available in various wattages to suit different performance needs.

  8. Preamps: Solid-state amps often have built-in preamps that shape the tone of the guitar signal before it goes to the power amp stage. Some models offer EQ controls, gain settings, and onboard effects to tailor the sound to the player's preferences.

  9. Effects Loops: Many solid-state amps come equipped with effects loops, allowing you to connect external effects pedals or processors in the signal chain.

  10. Versatility: Solid-state guitar amps can cover a wide range of musical styles and genres, from clean and jazzy tones to high-gain rock and metal sounds. The versatility of these amps makes them suitable for a broad spectrum of guitarists.

  11. Bass Amps: Solid-state technology is also commonly used in bass amplifiers. These amps are designed to provide clean and powerful low-frequency amplification for bass guitars.

In summary, solid-state guitar amps offer reliability, clean sound reproduction, and versatility at a budget-friendly price point. They have come a long way in terms of technology, with many modern models offering advanced features and digital modeling capabilities to cater to a wide range of musical preferences.

  • User questions & answers

Question: How does the 8/16 ohm output work? Is it automatic? No need to manually select which homage you need
Answer: Here is a URL for a 12VAC wall transformer you can use. https://www.amazon.com/Reliapro-ACU120100D0531-Adapter-Transformer-Straight/dp/B00B8861T2/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=12v+ac+power+supply&qid=1609824712&sr=8-5 Any 12VAC wall adapter will work, that puts out ac not dc. Not all of those power adapter/transformers have dc output, some are ac. Read the label and see. This one has 1000mA = 1A which should be plenty of current. I have one of these and I just used one I had laying around that had 12VAC output @ 750mA. You don't need much current; a few milliamps will do say 20mA, but get one that has several hundred. People don't realize that having a power supply with current supply capability many times beyond what is needed greatly adds to the sonic quality especially the bass response of and amplifier. The one in the URL will do just this, really nice.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is this for guitar only?......or does it do voice too
    Answer: It's only for guitar.
Question: is the back completely closed? orange's actual website show it is open
    Answer: Back is completely closed
Question: What is that "fx loop" area on the back? It could send a signal to another amp
Answer: The effects loop is not for sending a signal to another amp. There is not a dedicated line out on this amp, however I think the headphone out jack could be used to go directly to a PA. I'm not 100% sure about that but I seem to remember reading that in the manual. To answer your question about what an effects loop is, I will give you a very basic answer then refer you to a website that explains it really well. Basically an effects loop is an input/output that lets you insert effects after the preamp and eq and before the power section of the amplifier. Read all about it at this website: http://proguitarshop.com/andyscorner/fx-loops-explainedI use it with this amp if I'm going to use the distortion on the dirty channel and I want to use a delay effect. It enables the delay to come after the distortion. If I put the delay pedal after my guitar and straight into the regular input, the signal would be delayed first and then distorted.
Question: Does this amp sound good with effect like delay, chorus, phaser
Answer: This amp sounds good whether you go through the effects loop, or inline. I love this thing, and use it more than my half stack. It's just amazing tone regardless of guitar. Worth every penny.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does tis amp works also with acoustic guitars
Answer: Of course it does, but will you get the sound you want? This Mustang GT is intended for the electric guitar -- rock, blues, jazz, etc. It does have two different acoustic voices -- acoustic sim, and acoustansonic -- so try before you buy! If your primary need is an amp for an acoustic/electric guitar, then you're better off with something else.
Question: Anyone with experience with the line out? Is it pre or post master volume. Pre would be better
Answer: I have the Mustang 200 watt stereo version. I truly like it, but not for every single thing. I have a Marshall 50 watt tube amp, and a Fender Supersonic 22 tube amp. The tube amps are easier to get a good or even great tone out of without much fuss, but you must mic them to record them. That having been said, the Mustang delivers in spades if you spend time crafting the tones, experimenting with FX placement (order) and small tweaks to parameters in each section. If you do so, you can get amazing tones the and fX chains you simply can't get from the tube amps.the Bluetooth controls that allow you to use the Tone app on your smart phone to control the amp is really handy too. So the question about the line outs, it is pre, and the beauty is you can get all the tones you craft, and the speaker emulations direct out of the XLR (s) direct into your system, whether that is a PA, a recording interface for your daw, or a small home monitoring system direct, with no outside noise if you want, great for a home studio. So you can record direct off the amp, without the master section of a pair of 12's pushing 200 watts blowing everyone away, or pissing off the neighbors or your significant other. It also has an aux in, I use for my synth guitar. I also find it interesting to just monitor through headphones sometimes while recording. This is closer to what your recordings are going to sound like, unless you have killer outboard gear, mics, processors, preamps, compressors, monitors etc. and a great room for recording in. I know the new Mustang GTX, and the Katana, Blackheart are getting all the press now, but this amp did not get it's due diligence. I don't care if people think i am just saying that because i have one, ( I have 5 amps, and could sell the Mustang in a heartbeat and get something else, but it has so much to work with, I'm happy keeping it. It also make a killer keyboard or acoustic guitar amp. And you can take those off the XLRs too. :-)
Question: what are the speakers? i know theyre celestion but what kind
Answer: The GT 200 has 2 12" Celestion Special Design speakers; the GT 100 has a single 12" Celestion; the 40 has a pair of 6.5" Fender Special Design speakers. From personal experimentation, it looks like the 40's speakers top out at about 110-112 decibels. Loud enough to really annoy your neighbors, not loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage.
Question: How many pre and post effects can be used simultaneously
Answer: You can add a grand total of 7 built-in effects into the signal path either before the GT100 Pre-Amp section (pre) or after (post) for each of the 200 presets. There's a set of FX SEND and RETURN jacks that can add your outboard effects to the signal chain right before the GT 100 Power-amp section.

Question: how does sound compare to the "acoustic/electric" version? I will likely use it mostly acoustic for practice if traveling. thanks
Answer: It sounds pretty much the same, i.e. like an unplugged electric guitar. This is great for practice. I would not gig with it. Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Product description

Crush Pro CR120H 120W Guitar Amp Head Black. The Orange Crush CR120 is a 120W solid-state amp head that offers the tonal clarity and definition players adore in an Orange amplifier. The Crush CR120 amp is part of the Crush range, marking Orange's first foray into the world of high power, solid-state amplifiers. Orange have spent years creating a solid-state amp they could be proud of. The Orange team wanted to keep these amp simple. The dirty channel uses a circuit based on four stages of gain and a three-band EQ, which provides the player with a wide pallet of over-driven and distorted sounds. The clean channel is based on a two-stage, two-band EQ design that gives the player a clean but warm sound, which, when cranked, begins to break up. These amps have a transparent effects loop, allowing you to plug in your favorite pedals. It also contains a digital reverb that provides a natural-sounding spring, hall or plate reverb.

    • Power: 120W (solid state)
    • Two channels
    • Digital reverb
    • Clean channel controls: Volume, Bass and Treble
    • Dirty channel controls: Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble and Gain

    User questions & answers

Question: Can you gig fine with this
Answer: Yes the power cord do have a mute button
Question: could you plug it into a speaker cabinet
Answer: Yes the software can be updated very easily at home. The Max 360c can even be updated through WiFi.
Question: Can it be plugged into a PA system for live performance
Answer: The screen could be brighter. Dont think the colors of arrows can be changed.
Question: How would this do for a practice amp for a Bass
Answer: I think that the 0.6 watts each measurement, 1.2 watt total must be a mistake, off by a factor of ten. I've tested them against my portable ten watt powered stereo speaker (five watts per channel). They're slightly louder than the portable speaker. I would bet money that these are six watts each, twelve watts total. I'm sorry I don't have a more sophisticated method of testing, but, no way are they just 1.2 watts total.

    Answer: No

Question: I assume electric guitar is what this is for, but can I use it for an acoustic electric
Answer: You can use this amp for Acoustic or Electric but I would not recommend using this for Acoustic if that's what you're exclusively playing. User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much
Answer: This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music!
Question: can i use peddles or effects with this amp
Answer: Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it.
Question: does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall
Answer: Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp.
Question: Does this have clean or dirty
Answer: One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell
Answer: Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a
Answer: Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side
Answer: Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. User questions & answers

Question: This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks
Answer: No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars.
Question: What function does the tap button perform? Thanks
Answer: I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it.
    Question: what size is speaker
Answer: It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean.
    Question: is the power cord
Answer: Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp.
