13 best bass guitar amplifiers
Bass guitar amplifiers, commonly referred to as bass amps, are specialized amplification systems designed to amplify and shape the sound of a bass guitar. These amplifiers are a crucial part of a bassist's setup, providing the necessary power and tone control to deliver a clear and impactful bass sound. Here are some key points about bass guitar amplifiers:
Amplification for Low Frequencies: Bass guitars produce lower frequencies compared to electric guitars, so bass amplifiers are specifically designed to handle these lower-pitched notes effectively. They typically have larger speakers and amplification circuits optimized for bass frequencies.
Combo Amps vs. Head and Cabinet Configurations: Bass amplifiers come in two main configurations. Combo amps have both the amplifier and speakers housed in a single unit, providing portability and convenience. Head and cabinet configurations separate the amplifier (the head) from the speakers (the cabinet), offering flexibility in terms of speaker selection and arrangement.
Wattage: Bass amps come in various wattage ratings, ranging from small practice amps with a few watts to powerful stage amplifiers with several hundred watts. The choice of wattage depends on the intended use, with larger venues requiring more powerful amps.
Speaker Size: Bass amplifier cabinets can feature different speaker sizes, commonly 10-inch, 12-inch, 15-inch, or even 18-inch speakers. The choice of speaker size affects the tone, with larger speakers typically producing deeper and fuller bass sounds.
Solid-State vs. Tube (Valve) Amps: Bass amplifiers can be either solid-state or tube-based (valve). Solid-state amps use transistor technology and are known for their reliability and clean, punchy sound. Tube amps, on the other hand, use vacuum tubes for a warmer and more vintage tone but may require more maintenance.
Tone Controls: Bass amps typically feature a range of tone controls, including bass, midrange, and treble knobs. Some models also offer graphic equalizers or parametric EQs, allowing bassists to shape their sound precisely.
Gain and Volume Controls: Gain and volume controls determine the amplifier's input sensitivity and overall output level. Gain controls the amount of distortion or overdrive in some amplifiers, which can be used to add character to the bass sound.
DI Output: Many bass amplifiers are equipped with a Direct Injection (DI) output, which allows the bass signal to be sent directly to a mixing console or recording device. This is useful for live performances and recording sessions.
Built-In Effects: Some bass amplifiers come with built-in effects, such as chorus, reverb, or compression. These effects can add versatility to the bassist's sound without the need for additional pedals.
Portability and Weight: The portability of a bass amplifier is an important consideration for gigging musicians. Smaller, lightweight amps are suitable for practice and smaller venues, while larger, heavier amps may be required for bigger stages.
Brands: There are several well-known manufacturers of bass amplifiers, including Ampeg, Fender, Hartke, Orange, Gallien-Krueger, and many others. Each brand offers a range of models with different features and tonal characteristics.
In summary, bass guitar amplifiers are essential tools for bassists, providing the power and tone control necessary to shape the distinctive low-end sound of the bass guitar. The choice of amplifier depends on factors like playing style, venue size, and tonal preferences.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension |
Answer: | I have the 210 combo and 115 extension. The 115 comes with wheels and I put the 210 on a rock and roller cart. Extremely portable and very loud, it will get louder than your ears can stand. I would say the combo and 115 are plenty. Not worth getting the head and 410, just a waste of money and more weight to carry around. |
Question: | As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts |
Answer: | As a standalone unit the two 10 inch speakers are pushing 350 Watts at 8 ohms (Internal). You need to attach an external 8 ohm speaker cabinet to get 500 Watts. Attaching the external 8 ohm speaker cabinet brings the total impedance down to 4 ohms and that is when you get the maximum 500 Watts. |
Question: | I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band |
Answer: | I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w. |
Question: | is this amp usable in new zealand |
Answer: | I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks |
Answer: | Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck. |
Question: | Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound |
Answer: | It depends on the dealer's policy. |
Question: | Does it come with a wire |
Answer: | Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab. |
Question: | Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers |
Answer: | As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use my acoustic I rig mic with this? With the headphone type plug |
Answer: | there is an AUX IN jack that takes a 3.5mm plug. Yes. |
Question: | Will this sound good if I’m Playin piano using my midi keyboard |
Answer: | Depends on how good your speakers are in your keyboard if your keyboard has stereo speakers they're probably going to sound better but as far as a little amp goes it's adequate |
Question: | what kind of cable do I need to connect to my Uke |
Answer: | Dear JOYO fan or user, it required a normal audio cable connect to Uke. thanks for your question. |
Question: | Can a microphone be plugged into this amplifier |
Answer: | Yes but you'll want to be aware that the amp takes a 1/4" plug, so you might need a converter. I also would be cautious if the mic requires phantom power. The amp doesnt provide it, so you'll need to get it elsewhere. If you have a mic preamp, then you could also plug the mic into that and the preamp into the aux jack, which would allow you to still be able to plug a guitar into the 1/4" jack. However be aware that the aux jack doesnt go through the volume/tone/gain, so you'll need to provide that elsewhere (which is why a preamp would be helpful) |

Question: | Is this supposed to be just for active basses? I can barely hear it |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is this thing's endurence |
Answer: | It seems well contructed. |
Question: | Does it stay in tune ? How does it sound in Drop D |
Answer: | It stayed in tune acceptably out of the box. Maybe lost a few cents overnight. Spent $13 on TUSQ XL nuts, and it sounds better and has stayed in tune for 3 days without a single cent lost. Drop D sounds a bit mushy with the cheap 0.045 gauge strings, but is acceptable with overdrive/compression. I'd change the strings if clean drop D is desired. |
Question: | Can you play both electric and acoustic on this guitar |
Answer: | It is an electric bass guitar, so it is meant to be plugged into an amplifier. Of course you can always play it unplugged, but it would sound very quiet. I used to practice unplugged while everyone in my house slept. |
Question: | is the safeplus electric bass 4 string package left handed |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used as a monitor? Can i use this and my amp at the same time |
Answer: | No and yes... this is the amp. Its made to practice with. I connect my headphones to it with a 1/8" jack. I connect my phone or laptop with Bluetooth to play along with music to learn it. The guitar and laptop will both play thru the headphones. You could use a 1/8" to 1/4" to plug this into an amp, but there would be no reason as an amp will give you the sound your looking for. This is also limited to just a few effects, made specifically to be basic. It is not an effects pedal or a programmable pedal. |
Question: | Can I plug it into my guitar and play through an amplifier |
Answer: | Yes, you can plug this item into your guitar and play through an amplifier. You just need to plug the cord into the headphone jack on this appliance, and then plug that into your amplifier however, it might be better for you to plug directly into your amplifier instead of going through this item. |
Question: | Is the Bluetooth feature on this device a receiver or transmitter |
Answer: | It's a receiver |
Question: | So i only bought one b6 hoping to pair it with my bose soundlink blue tooth speaker. this doesn’t seem to work. no sound out of wired headphones |
Answer: | Not sure if this helps, but if your Bluetooth speaker has an aux. input, you can plug one end of a aux cable into the phones jack on the b6, and the other end into the aux of the bluetooth speaker. The Bluetooth function is geared towards playing along to music or a backing track, streaming from a smart phone. |
