13 best amps
Amplifiers, often referred to as "amps," are electronic devices used to increase the amplitude (or volume) of an audio signal. They are commonly used in various musical instruments and sound reinforcement systems to make the audio signal audible through speakers. Here's what you need to know about amps, particularly in the context of electric guitar amplifiers and related equipment:
Types of Amps:
- Combo Amps: Combo amplifiers combine an amplifier and speaker(s) in a single unit. They are popular for their portability and convenience, making them a common choice for practice and smaller gigs.
- Head and Cabinet Amps: These systems consist of separate amplifier "heads" and speaker cabinets. This modular setup allows for more flexibility in terms of sound customization and can handle larger venues.
Electric Guitar Amplifiers:
- Electric guitar amplifiers are specifically designed to amplify the sound of electric guitars. They come in various styles and configurations, including clean, dirty (distorted), and modeling amps that simulate the sounds of different amplifier and speaker combinations.
- Common amplifier features include gain (to control the level of distortion), tone controls (for adjusting the EQ), and volume controls.
Bass Amplifiers:
- Bass amplifiers are tailored for amplifying the lower frequencies produced by bass guitars. They often have more significant speakers and amplifier circuits designed to handle the unique characteristics of bass guitar signals.
Preamps:
- Preamps are amplifier components that boost the level of a weak signal before it enters the main amplifier. In the context of musical instruments, preamps are sometimes used to shape the instrument's tone before it's further amplified.
Effects and Amplifiers:
- Many amplifiers come with built-in effects, such as reverb, chorus, and distortion. Additionally, guitarists often use external effects pedals in conjunction with their amplifiers to achieve specific sounds and effects.
Tube vs. Solid-State vs. Modeling Amps:
- Tube amplifiers use vacuum tubes (valves) to amplify the signal. They are known for their warm and rich tone but can be heavier and require more maintenance.
- Solid-state amplifiers use transistors for amplification. They are generally more reliable and lightweight but may have a different tonal character.
- Modeling amplifiers digitally emulate the sound characteristics of various amplifier and speaker combinations, offering a wide range of tones in one unit.
Power Rating:
- Amplifiers are rated in watts (W), which indicates their power output.Higher wattage amps can produce louder sound, making them suitable for larger venues and bands.
Speaker Configuration:
- Amplifiers can have different speaker configurations, including single speakers, multiple speakers (1x12, 2x12, 4x12, etc.), and even different speaker sizes (e.g., 10-inch, 12-inch, 15-inch). The choice of speaker configuration affects the overall sound and projection.
Use Cases:
- Amplifiers are used not only for live performances but also for recording. In recording studios, amplifiers are often mic'd up to capture their sound for recording purposes.
Maintenance:
- Amplifiers, especially tube amps, require periodic maintenance, including tube replacements and cleaning. Proper care and maintenance can extend the lifespan of the equipment.
In the world of musical instruments, amplifiers play a crucial role in shaping the sound and allowing musicians to project their music to audiences. The choice of amplifier depends on the musician's preferences, playing style, and performance requirements.

Question: | What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks |

Question: | Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound |
Answer: | It depends on the dealer's policy. |
Question: | Does it come with a wire |
Answer: | Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab. |
Question: | Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers |
Answer: | As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension |
Answer: | I have the 210 combo and 115 extension. The 115 comes with wheels and I put the 210 on a rock and roller cart. Extremely portable and very loud, it will get louder than your ears can stand. I would say the combo and 115 are plenty. Not worth getting the head and 410, just a waste of money and more weight to carry around. |
Question: | As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts |
Answer: | As a standalone unit the two 10 inch speakers are pushing 350 Watts at 8 ohms (Internal). You need to attach an external 8 ohm speaker cabinet to get 500 Watts. Attaching the external 8 ohm speaker cabinet brings the total impedance down to 4 ohms and that is when you get the maximum 500 Watts. |
Question: | I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band |
Answer: | I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w. |
Question: | is this amp usable in new zealand |
Answer: | I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does tis amp works also with acoustic guitars |
Answer: | Of course it does, but will you get the sound you want? This Mustang GT is intended for the electric guitar -- rock, blues, jazz, etc. It does have two different acoustic voices -- acoustic sim, and acoustansonic -- so try before you buy! If your primary need is an amp for an acoustic/electric guitar, then you're better off with something else. |
Question: | Anyone with experience with the line out? Is it pre or post master volume. Pre would be better |
Answer: | I have the Mustang 200 watt stereo version. I truly like it, but not for every single thing. I have a Marshall 50 watt tube amp, and a Fender Supersonic 22 tube amp. The tube amps are easier to get a good or even great tone out of without much fuss, but you must mic them to record them. That having been said, the Mustang delivers in spades if you spend time crafting the tones, experimenting with FX placement (order) and small tweaks to parameters in each section. If you do so, you can get amazing tones the and fX chains you simply can't get from the tube amps.the Bluetooth controls that allow you to use the Tone app on your smart phone to control the amp is really handy too. So the question about the line outs, it is pre, and the beauty is you can get all the tones you craft, and the speaker emulations direct out of the XLR (s) direct into your system, whether that is a PA, a recording interface for your daw, or a small home monitoring system direct, with no outside noise if you want, great for a home studio. So you can record direct off the amp, without the master section of a pair of 12's pushing 200 watts blowing everyone away, or pissing off the neighbors or your significant other. It also has an aux in, I use for my synth guitar. I also find it interesting to just monitor through headphones sometimes while recording. This is closer to what your recordings are going to sound like, unless you have killer outboard gear, mics, processors, preamps, compressors, monitors etc. and a great room for recording in. I know the new Mustang GTX, and the Katana, Blackheart are getting all the press now, but this amp did not get it's due diligence. I don't care if people think i am just saying that because i have one, ( I have 5 amps, and could sell the Mustang in a heartbeat and get something else, but it has so much to work with, I'm happy keeping it. It also make a killer keyboard or acoustic guitar amp. And you can take those off the XLRs too. :-) |
Question: | what are the speakers? i know theyre celestion but what kind |
Answer: | The GT 200 has 2 12" Celestion Special Design speakers; the GT 100 has a single 12" Celestion; the 40 has a pair of 6.5" Fender Special Design speakers. From personal experimentation, it looks like the 40's speakers top out at about 110-112 decibels. Loud enough to really annoy your neighbors, not loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. |
Question: | How many pre and post effects can be used simultaneously |
Answer: | You can add a grand total of 7 built-in effects into the signal path either before the GT100 Pre-Amp section (pre) or after (post) for each of the 200 presets. There's a set of FX SEND and RETURN jacks that can add your outboard effects to the signal chain right before the GT 100 Power-amp section. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is input power as 110 volt, 220 Volt,or 110-240 Volt |
Answer: | Metal band in a 1000 seat venue-no, local bar,100 people or less, normal drummer should be OK. A friend of mine has the 100 watt version and has been playing local gigs at 50 watts, says its just loud enough, works fine. |
Question: | Does this come in black |
Answer: | Yes. The extra features that it brings makes the MKII much more useful. |
Question: | How does the Aux input work |
Answer: | Runs the amp at 50 watts, 25 or .5 watts, different levels depending on the volume you need. .5 watt is great for when the kids are sleeping. |
Question: | Is this suitable for an electric violin |
Answer: | There are a few more effects on the MkII and the pots for effects are now dual pots to make it easier to dial in... AMP IN is now on the Katana to allow you to plug in a multi-effects board etc and bypass the amp settings.. The "sneaky amps" available on the MkI are blocked out on the MkII.. but you get 5 more voice settings on the 5 amps available for the MkII.. newer and easier software.. Patches made for the MkI work with the MkII, but the MkII patches do not work on the MkI. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you gig fine with this |
Answer: | Yes the power cord do have a mute button |
Question: | could you plug it into a speaker cabinet |
Answer: | Yes the software can be updated very easily at home. The Max 360c can even be updated through WiFi. |
Question: | Can it be plugged into a PA system for live performance |
Answer: | The screen could be brighter. Dont think the colors of arrows can be changed. |
Question: | How would this do for a practice amp for a Bass |
Answer: | I think that the 0.6 watts each measurement, 1.2 watt total must be a mistake, off by a factor of ten. I've tested them against my portable ten watt powered stereo speaker (five watts per channel). They're slightly louder than the portable speaker. I would bet money that these are six watts each, twelve watts total. I'm sorry I don't have a more sophisticated method of testing, but, no way are they just 1.2 watts total. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this only for acoustic guitars |
Answer: | I wouldn't plug an electric guitar into it, just as you wouldn't want to put acoustic strings on an electric guitar |
Question: | I wonder if this is decent enough to be used as a speaker for my laptop or phone as well? To play music in general besides plugging in my acoustic |
Answer: | The speaker is fine. The Blackstar Fly3 with extension speaker is much better. |
Question: | can you use this amp for a loop pedal |
Answer: | You can use the amp WITH a loop pedal. The amp itself does not have a pedal. |
Question: | Each channel has its separate volume control. Do the bass/mid/treble and equalizer controls effect both channels or just channel |
Answer: | The bass, mid, treble, and chorus are only for channel 2, channel 1 is like a dedicated microphone input, no effects, with a mic cable input. The concept, I think, for this amp, was for the singer/songwriter, to have their sound amplified at home, or in a smaller venue. For a small amp, it sounds pretty decent, and sometimes I just use the mic input lightly amplified, with an un-amplified acoustic guitar. You could also run a mic with a 1/4 guitar type plug into channel 2, gets some (mic) effects, with an um-amplified guitar. I have not actually done that, but don't see why one couldn't do so. Musicians love different musical effects, right??? |

User questions & answers
Question: | So, if this plugs into the effects loop, does that mean that you can't run your effects in the loop at the same time |
Answer: | Yes, assuming it is an electric bass. |
Question: | What is the wattage/power rating |
Answer: | It is a simple passive volume pedal. Two inputs and two outputs controlled by one pedal. If you plan on adding it in line with your audio cable from your instrument than it should work fine. |
Question: | i have an old marshall head but it doesnt have an fx loop, can someone help me if there is another way to use this jhs amp box |
Answer: | It's a volume pedal first and foremost, but if you're using it with a guitar rig you can use it to express single notes or chords from a low volume to high or back and forth and it works well for that purpose. If that's the kind of expression you're talking about. |
Question: | The features and details say this works with the jhs morning glory v2. Does it also work for morning glory v |
Answer: | I contacted the manufacturer and was told the following:"There is no 100K pot in our volume pedal series. There are 50K and 250K---DF1511A and DF1511B" |

About JHS Pedals
JHS Pedals is the result of Josh Scott’s desire to build quality effects pedals that stand out in an over-saturated market. Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.
With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.

User questions & answers
Question: | This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks |
Answer: | No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars. |
Question: | What function does the tap button perform? Thanks |
Answer: | I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it. |
Question: | what size is speaker |
Answer: | It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean. |
Question: | is the power cord |
Answer: | Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp. |
