14 best bass combo amps

Bass combo amps, also known as bass combo amplifiers, are essential components for bass guitarists. These amplifiers combine the amplifier head and speaker(s) into a single, compact unit, making them a convenient choice for practice, rehearsals, and small to medium-sized gigs. Here's what you need to know about bass combo amps:

  1. Amplifier and Speaker in One: A bass combo amp integrates both the amplifier and the speaker(s) into a single enclosure. This design simplifies setup and transportation compared to separate amplifier heads and speaker cabinets.

  2. Size and Portability: Bass combo amps come in various sizes and power ratings, ranging from small practice amps to larger, more powerful units suitable for stage use. Smaller combos are highly portable and suitable for practice sessions or jamming with friends, while larger combos can handle live performances.

  3. Power Rating: Bass combo amps are rated in watts RMS (Root Mean Square), which indicates their power output. Higher wattage amps can produce louder sound and are better suited for larger venues and gigs, while lower-wattage amps are great for practice and smaller venues.

  4. Speaker Configuration: Combo amps can have different speaker configurations, including single speakers (e.g., 1x12") or multiple speakers (e.g., 2x10" or 4x10"). The choice of speaker configuration affects the amp's tonal characteristics and dispersion.

  5. Tone Controls: Bass combo amps typically feature a range of tone controls, such as bass, midrange, and treble knobs, allowing you to shape your bass guitar's sound to your liking. Some amps also include a "contour" or "shape" control for quick tonal adjustments.

  6. Gain and Preamp: Many combo amps have a gain control that lets you add distortion or overdrive to your bass sound. This can be useful for achieving various musical styles, from clean tones to gritty rock or metal sounds.

  7. Effects and EQ: Some bass combo amps include built-in effects like chorus, reverb, or compression, as well as a graphic equalizer for fine-tuning your sound. These features can be handy for adding depth and character to your bass tone.

  8. DI Output: Many modern bass combo amps come equipped with a DI (Direct Injection) output, which allows you to connect the amp directly to a sound system or recording equipment for studio or live performances.

  9. Size and Weight: Consider the physical size and weight of the combo amp, especially if you need to transport it frequently. Smaller amps are easier to carry, while larger ones may require assistance or equipment like casters.

  10. Versatility: Some bass combo amps are designed to be versatile and suitable for a variety of musical genres, while others are specialized for specific styles, such as funk, rock, or metal.

  11. Build Quality: Look for a combo amp with a robust build quality to ensure durability and reliability, especially if you plan to gig regularly.

Bass combo amps are a practical choice for bassists who want a self-contained and portable solution for amplifying their instrument. They are suitable for a wide range of playing situations, from practice and recording to live performances in smaller venues. When choosing a bass combo amp, consider your playing needs, preferred tonal characteristics, and the size of the venues where you'll be performing.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension
Answer: I have the 210 combo and 115 extension. The 115 comes with wheels and I put the 210 on a rock and roller cart. Extremely portable and very loud, it will get louder than your ears can stand. I would say the combo and 115 are plenty. Not worth getting the head and 410, just a waste of money and more weight to carry around.
Question: As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts
Answer: As a standalone unit the two 10 inch speakers are pushing 350 Watts at 8 ohms (Internal). You need to attach an external 8 ohm speaker cabinet to get 500 Watts. Attaching the external 8 ohm speaker cabinet brings the total impedance down to 4 ohms and that is when you get the maximum 500 Watts.
Question: I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band
Answer: I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w.
Question: is this amp usable in new zealand
Answer: I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.)

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks
Answer: Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.
Question: Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound
Answer: It depends on the dealer's policy.
Question: Does it come with a wire
Answer: Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab.
Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound .

Answer: Convenience and less weight even though you may not notice a volume difference.

User questions & answers

Question: does this support 220v
Answer: No
Question: This amp good for metal
Answer: Hello- This amp amp actually has some really great vintage patches as well as some heavy modern sounds. Its very versatile and I think you're able to get a "metal" sound at a low volume!
Question: I assume electric guitar is what this is for, but can I use it for an acoustic electric
Answer: You can use this amp for Acoustic or Electric but I would not recommend using this for Acoustic if that's what you're exclusively playing. If you're looking for a good acoustic amp, I would recommend the AS50D. You can find out more about the AS Series here: https://marshallamps.com/products/amplifiers/acoustic-soloist/
Question: Does it have a line out to plug into pa or does it have to be mic'd
Answer: No line out. Has a headphone jack and a mini USB output.

User questions & answers

Question: what are its dimensions and does it come with a power supply
Answer: The combo is 18" high, 15.7" wide, and 13.2" deep. It comes with a standard 120VAC power cable.
Question: What is the speaker wattage of the max 100? Is it a100 watt
Answer: No, it’s a 50 watt.
Question: What is the weight of this amp? Specs say 1 lb, but that's highly unlikely
Answer: Very unlikely. ;) Even so, I double-checked the weight on my bathroom scale. It's a VERY manageable 25 pounds (or 11.3 kilograms).
Question: Can a microphone also be hook up for playing the guitar and sing at the same time? Thanks
Answer: Short answer: Maybe. Longer answer: There's an Auxiliary Input (3.5mm) that's normally for audio input from an iPod/phone/external music source. You might be able to plug in a microphone with a 3.5mm plug, but I don't know if the signal would be strong enough to complete with the bass. You might be better off dropping Peavey a note and getting your answer direct from them.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this compare to the hartke vx3500 or the ashdown combo amps
Answer: You'll find it's easier to move, has the same punchy tone, and just about the same power. You really only get the 450 watt power by adding a extention speaker. I added a 15" Ampeg bass extention cab to get a real bottom end growl, and I got it. Great high and growling lows -- I couldn't ask more from this combo. Hope this helps.
Question: Can the xlr line out be used for another speaker cab or does this amp have an external speaker line out
Answer: The Ampeg BA115v2 does not have a line out for any external speakers. The xlr line out is for connection to a mixer or recording setups. The Ampeg BA210 comes with a 1/4" output jack for an external speaker.
Question: Can you hook up a microphone
Answer: There isn't an XLR input on this amp. There is a 1/4" input, a 1/4" aux input, and a 3.5mm phones input. You could hook up a microphone if the mike cord has a 1/4" plug in.
Question: Is this a stand alone 450 watt amp or do you need an extension cabinet to achieve the full 450 watts and its only half that by itself
Answer: If you want the full 450, you need to add an extention cab to get the ohms right. I highly recommend a 15" cab -- you get some great growling lows ...

Question: Is this the same amp/bag bundle listed on the Positive Grid site for $249. Dec
Answer: No, these are powered via USB
Question: Will the spark app run on Android
Answer: I bought a set of these speakers a few months ago. They work very well and I reccommend them highly. Remember these are USB speakers and the only connection you have to make is plugging them into an available USB port. You DO NOT need an addition audio 0r power cable. These speakers are most valuable for anyone having a lap top or desk top whose audio card or chip has stopped working. I am very pleased with mine.
Question: Question for amazon: does this come from amazon with a 2-prong power supply or 3-prong

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use my acoustic I rig mic with this? With the headphone type plug
Answer: there is an AUX IN jack that takes a 3.5mm plug. Yes.
Question: Will this sound good if I’m Playin piano using my midi keyboard
Answer: Depends on how good your speakers are in your keyboard if your keyboard has stereo speakers they're probably going to sound better but as far as a little amp goes it's adequate
Question: what kind of cable do I need to connect to my Uke
Answer: Dear JOYO fan or user, it required a normal audio cable connect to Uke. thanks for your question.
Question: Can a microphone be plugged into this amplifier
Answer: Yes but you'll want to be aware that the amp takes a 1/4" plug, so you might need a converter. I also would be cautious if the mic requires phantom power. The amp doesnt provide it, so you'll need to get it elsewhere. If you have a mic preamp, then you could also plug the mic into that and the preamp into the aux jack, which would allow you to still be able to plug a guitar into the 1/4" jack. However be aware that the aux jack doesnt go through the volume/tone/gain, so you'll need to provide that elsewhere (which is why a preamp would be helpful)

Orange Crush Bass 100

Taking elements from our flagship 4 Stroke and OB1 series bass amps, and with enough power for smaller venues, the Crush Bass 100 is a seriously versatile combo in both sound and application. Using high-end engineering techniques not usually found on combos of this type, the key to the Crush Bass 100’s immensely fat and detailed tone is the amplifier’s 100 Watt output section. The choice of discrete components (rather than common integrated circuits) gives the amp sensational levels of clarity across the entire spectrum, and the internal 15” speaker means that even the most subterranean frequencies come through loud and clear.

Coupled to the output stage is an equally powerful preamp. The active EQ section with its sweepable parametric mid band allows players to fine tune the Crush Bass 100 to any style, plus our ‘bi-amp’ inspired Gain and Blend circuit adds even more tonal variety. These interactive controls add extra harmonic content and variable levels of grit to the core bass tone, perfect for creating earthy vintage riffs or even savagely distorted mayhem, without ever losing the all-important low end. They can also be switched in remotely via the optional footswitch. Along with a balanced line output, the Crush Bass 100 also has a buffered effects loop, an integrated tuner, aux. input and a Cabsim-loaded headphone output for silent practice. From the bedroom to the stage, this amp covers all bases.

Ever since the founding of the company in 1968, Orange has been a pioneering force in the guitar amplification industry. Our commitment to craftsmanship and quality control has allowed our amplifiers to stand the test of time, giving their owners as much pleasure now, as the day they were bought. Today, with a team of the world’s finest amplifier engineers, Orange continues to push back the boundaries of conventional amplifier design.

Powerful Active Parametric EQ

The Crush Bass 100 features an EQ circuit inspired by our prestigious 4 Stroke Series amplifiers. At its centre is a parametric mid band. This presents players with a much greater degree of control over the sound than a traditional EQ, allowing them to vary the frequencies they want hear. The mid band covers a wide range, sweeping from 300Hz (fully anti-clockwise) to 2.7kHz (fully clockwise), meaning this amp can be fine tuned to suit any musical style. The active circuitry allows for up to 15dB of boost or cut on the bass and middle frequencies, and up to 20dB on the treble side.

Blend & Gain

Lifted straight from our popular OB1 Series amps, the Blend and Gain controls are a nod to the many bass players who experiment with guitar and bass amps simultaneously. In this ‘bi-amped’ setup, layers of harmonics and distortion from the guitar amp are blended with the core bass tone to create the ultimate full-range live sound. The Crush Bass 100’s Gain and Blend controls create the same effect in a single package, adding extra bite and crispness to the tone at lower gain settings, right up to all-out filth with the dials cranked. These controls can also be engaged remotely with the optional FS-1 footswitch, ideal for fattening your sound on the fly.

Discrete Output Stage & Analogue Design

At the heart of the Crush Bass 100 is its 100 Watt output stage. Using discrete circuitry, rather than ICs (integrated circuits) ensures a purer and even more forceful delivery with outstanding clarity and definition. The Crush Bass 100 houses a 15” speaker with a reflex port for improved low end response. The buffered effects loop has been engineered for maximum transparency, ensuring your pedal arsenal will perform at its peak.

Balanced Output, Cabsim Headphone Output, Aux Input & Tuner

The Crush Bass 100 features a balanced output (post EQ) for connecting to a PA for live situations. The headphone output features our Cabsim circuitry which emulates the response of our stage-ready OBC bass speaker cabinets during silent practice. This signal can also be sent to a console for seriously authentic direct recording. The Aux. input allows for connecting external audio sources for backing tracks whilst the handy onboard tuner makes for quick tune-ups between jams.

Brian 'Head' Welch - KoRn

“KoRn has always been in the game of matching different amp tones and blending them together in the studio. And Orange has always been right there in the mix!"

Sergio Vega - Bass Player for Deftones/Quicksand

"This sounds really meaty. We tweaked it [the Crush Bass combo] for a about 30 seconds tops and we got a great sound without investing much time into it. With the Crush Bass 50, I see myself using it on home, recording with it, taking it on the road, recording at the hotel. This thing sounds really good. I could use this live in certain capacities and certain gigs and I wouldn’t have any issue bringing this into a space."

Glenn Hughes - Bassist for Deep Purple

"You can go in the studio, take that bass combo and make your album with something like that, it’s truly outstanding. It’s gritty, it’s punchy, sustain is so important and it’s certainly got all that."

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used during a parade for portable usage
Answer: It is better used inside, but it can be used for a parade. You may have to mic it. Not sure if it would be loud enough without.
Question: Please tell me, does the ⅛" imput socket on the amplifier's top (described as an MP3 input "for jamming along") accept and play an analog/mic signal
Answer: No, it's line level input socket. You can't connect microphone directly to the line level input socket. You need a microphone pre-amplifier for that. As soon your microphone is amplified ( using an optional mic pre-amp) you can connect it to that "MP3" line level socket.
Question: Really? david bowie's album name and logo? how's this possible
Answer: We love Bowie too, but Blackstar started in 2007, long before his 2016 album.
Question: I have a question. The model Specified on this page is for bass guitar
Answer: Yes, it is specified for bass guitar. The compressor is useful for something this small being used for bass and actually at low volumes reproduces low B better than expected.

Product description

Double Four 70W Bass Combo Amp Red. The Double Four is a single channel bass amplifier that has an auxiliary input for iPad/iPod, mp3 or drum machine. It features 3-band EQ that is perfectly tailored for bass guitar, headphone out jack and a line out for recording. It is ideal for all kinds of basses and can handle the open B string on a 5 string bass with ease. The cabinet may be as small as a shoe box but it is built to the same standards of all PJB cabinets, heavily braced internally and damped with acoustic damping materials to prevent cabinet coloration that can kill the true sound of your instrument. What you hear from the Double Four is the closest you can get to how your instrument actually sounds. The Double Four may just be a practice amp but it does not mean that it has to sound like a practice amp. The sound is huge for its size and you may find it hard to believe that all the sound from your bass is just coming out of such a tiny jewel box.
